The way I read Roman is that he wanted to sell out. When he suggest to Kendall that they do he is mumbling and avoiding eye contact, but suggesting quite clearly that perhaps the best thing is to just get out. Soon after Kendall has pushed/convinced him that they should try to keep control Roman goes all in on fascism and racism to a much greater degree than what we have seen so far in the show. I read this as Roman wanting this all to end, when selling isn't an option then his death drive takes over and he begins seeking annihilation instead. If he can't be free, then at least he can seek self-destruction.

GOD the parellel between oedipus & faust blinding themselves and the last episode of succession being titled with open eyes… this video made me appreciate succession on a whole another level and when i eventually binge the series again it will be with a new lense thanks to you!! may be the best video about succession
RIGHT I forgot what the episode was titled until I went to pull the clips for this episode i so wish I’d made that connection earlier but it’s soooo good that show is sooo good and I’m stoked you liked the video!
Every time I see your actual numbers I get confused, because how could this person have less than 100k subscribers?? With content like this?? Baffling. Fantastic work as always, and that ending song was one of my favorites. Looking forward to the next one :)
i loved the stuff you had about oedipus and electra because it always bothered me how most people think of the oedipus complex as someone wanting those things instead of the story actually being about someone who was actively against it,, to me, it’s about how if someone can be blamed for doing something wrong without knowing it’s wrong
yes I love this! there was an angle I found in some of my research that suggested Oedipus also being about how if we can forgive Oedipus for crimes he didn't know he was committing and wasn't responsible for, then we can also forgive ourselves for moral transgression we didn't know we were committing which I thought was fun as well.
It occurred to me that in the modern tragedy ( and often in life) self-blinding after being exposed to the reality of a situation, is less often self imposed punishment but instead failure to take responsibility. The one who has had their eye's opened often proceeds to put blinders on.
OOOOH THAT IS AN INTERESTING TAKE WOW. Cause after all oedipus got to take advantage of his daughter caring for/guiding him after he was blind, but he never had to witness what she was/what he’d done to her. That is definitely something to chew on!
I appreciate you making it very clear the difference between my faith’s texts and the very Doo doo interpretation of post Nicean Creed Christianity. i was more prepared for this video than for my actual college lectures. fuck sixty pages of readings but I DID watch every take on succession on youtube prior to this
Best video essayist on UA-cam 100% serious, no exaggeration, no hyperbole. Is there someone on this platform with better scholarly insights? I'm sure there is. Is there someone with better visuals or editing? For sure. But overall is there somebody here as nice to listen to and enjoyable? Not for me at least. The school system failed me and I didn't know semiology or Emile Durkheim even existed until I watched a video essay about the Snape wives. So thank you Biz, for the nice times and knowledge. Love you and keep on the GREAT work
the school system failed everyone you are absolutely not alone in that. the standardized punitive approach to early education (at least in the US) is one thing but particularly when it comes to this “higher” education thing we have going on where we lock away books and knowledge behind hundreds of thousands of dollar tuitions, then scam 18 year olds into getting into debt for their rest of their life by telling them that’s the only option they have. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. ANYONE CAN LEARN ANYTHING AT ANY TIME. (soz about the novel lol I just have very strong feelings about this topic and appreciate your comment so much thank you
@@upinurbiz first of all thank you for responding :). I live and study in Italy so higher education (even private) is not as cost prohibitive, at least in theory. As I've experienced first hand the professors teaching the courses mandatory for your degree at the cheap, state funded university the next town over can be absolute idiots (readying brief descriptions from a slide show instead of actually giving a medieval art history lecture, talking about Matera for 90 minutes instead of archival practices) it's kind of a gamble and you can easily end up not learning anything about the main subject of your degree. Is this to say there a no good teachers in a public higher education system? no. But there is a level of classism because if you want to make sure you're going to have great teachers across the board you have to move to another city, probably a big expensive one. (For americans who move across the U.S for college this may seem menial but here you either have money for a 600/700€ a month room, which is a lot for most families, or have extremely high grades and low income to get student housing) That's not to say we have it bad because when I told an American exchang student I payed maybe 400€ for the entire year she started crying. I would have probably not attended college if this costed hundreds of thousands of dollars. Sorry for the lengthy response but yeah, American college especially is a really crazy scam, I wholeheartedly agree. Ps. Durkheim in particular came to mind because my former philosophy professor was a madman obsessed with Tommaso d'Aquino and Christian philosophy (we barely breached the 20th century) and when I visited my forme lit prof. and we got chatting about our recent reads I brought up Durkheim and she literally told me "we had a lot of fun studying him, didn't we?" This video might actually get me to watch Succession, thank you for all your amazing work. My brain isn't working very well right now but I'm a big fan of your videos and it really made my day to watch this one.
i usually come to these videos without having knowledge of the title topic (succession in this case) cause i know its mostly going to be a special interest rabbit hole that touches on the title topic occasionally (which i live for dont get me wrong it takes off the pressure of knowing everything about the media piece hehe)
Succession is the second greatest television show ever made. It was a masterpiece. And this video is everything!! This is the first video I found of yours and I’m obsessed. There is only one show I think tops succession and that’s the German Netflix series Dark. It’s an absolute masterpiece. The themes are just as complex as the mystery. And I would die to hear you break it all down. It questions the meaning of faith and family, blood and time. It takes into questions about fate, destiny and choices. Can you change your destiny? Can you be truly free from the clutches of time? Can you change your future? Are we really ever free of time? It’s a who done it, time travel mystery. It’s dark, haunting and brilliant.
You know, this crossroads idea your putting forward is in my opinion very in line with biblical narratives also. I have heard Dr Tim Mackie make the point that If you look at the original Hebrew and sometimes the Greek Septuagint, choosing to eat the fruit of the forbidden tree is equated to gaining the knowledge of right and wrong so that you can choose to "do what is right in your own eyes" (this phrase is very popular in the original text from the research I have done so far) but this lines up with the characters choosing at their own crossroads what is right for them but only based on what they know in that current moment, and in the end shooting themselves in the foot or maybe even the head.
Getting a Biz Barclay notification always has my ADHD tying me to a chair and saying "you will focus on this and nothing else for the next X hours" and I wouldn't change that for the world

Oh yeah, I remember in the snape wives video when I thought "Damn, this video about Byronic Heroes really changed focus." Only to remember it was about snape.
🤓☝️tragedy comes from a greek word "tragos" which means goat and oat which means song. The reason is because of the Satyrs, half men half goats, the followers of Dionysus. Every tetralogy contained a satyr play, about which we know almost nothing, except that it featured men dressed as satyrs.
i have not watched a single minute of Succession despite everyone and their mother talking abt it online.... but i will watch you talk to me abt it anyway!
I've never seen Succession, but I come back to this video all the time, because it is seriously one of the top five video essays on this Devil owned platform.
Girl, I need that Byron vid injected into my eyeballs asap! Let it be the buckshot to my Hemingway (I hope your life offers you the opportunity to get that out. All the best. ❤)
Fantastic, watched your Snape wives and GND video like 4 times. The Byronic hero is my favorite, and also love the heroine version though they are way rarer. My favorite is the queen from queens thief, she is wretched, sad, broken, powerless and powerful but has her sweet points. And she is devastated when her husband loves her because her life makes him feel wretched. I literally want to have a discussion about how her partner and her switch roles as the hero in book 3. Ugh. I love epics and deep family drama.
I really in pale moonlight, the star trek, deep space 9 episode. Like garak isnt the devil, but in that episode ots symbolic, as ruthless spy. He is a great person and lovely and good friend, but her ethe ruthless spy. Also peak theatre in the video :D
Hey just discovered your channel! That was quite a bit to take in one sitting, but I really appreciate your devotion to speaking at such length to such an important concept to us
I haven't watched Succession-and probably never will-but your video essays are SO good that I couldn't help but watch this one all the way through... And I was not disappointed! Thank you, as always, for all the discussions, analysis, and beautiful tangents 😁🖤
The fact that this video has so little attention, even though it is, arguably, your best video, is a crime. Have I watched a single episode of succession? No, never, not even a single second of it. But this is my second time watching this video because I cannot stop thinking about it every time you make another video.
I'm sorry but, while this is good and detailed and insightful and already on my rewatch list, NOBODY will ever make a better critique of Succession than Demi Adejuyigbe. It still gets stuck in my head...
...If you're wondering why I posted the "sheeza genius" comment... came from the series of GIFs and stickers in that handles some of these themes, it all started with the "Sheeza Nangel"/"Heeza Sinna" stickers and grew from there. That's why this film was so much fun for me. ...I also recently started investigating Weyer's writings on demonology; turns out he believed that witches didn't exist and couldn't cavort with the devil, but men could; women were dumb sluts whereas men could be dangerous warlocks. I think he wouldn't have even considered you'd be able to make this fascinating film about the devil. Needless to say, I celebrate you making this film. Weyer wozza nidiot!
For the record: I meant King James, obviously. Most of you seemed to understand that, the rest of you can take it up with Freud.

Biz barclay: Son
Mike’s Mic: Holy Spirit

i haven't finished watching succession yet and i haven't really been in the mood to watch it recently. however, the promise of an entire biz barclay vid as soon as i finish is motivating me to watch it right the fuck now!! excited to watch this in one sitting in 1-2 business weeks
Would love to know your thoughts upon return 👀👀👀
@@upinurbiz okay i have returned and watched this in one sitting as promised, and it was so fucking good!! probably the best reason anyone has ever had to binge watch a show
the amount of times i got absolutely jumpscared by christian bale in 1992 newsies here is not insignificant
I love your videos! Thank you for existing!
seeing this video and its timestamp in my subscriptions today was a true blessing and im so happy with this comparison of faust and succession !!!! its so real! ANyway im only 23 mins in atm soo excited to finish this
I just wanted to say thank you very much for making your long form, tangential, thought provoking, hilarious, philosophical videos. I greatly enjoy them, whether I've seen the source material or not.
i started watching this when it was first uploaded, realized i didn't know what was going on, and watched all 4 seasons of succession to be able to watch this video essay. thank you biz for changing my life 🙏🙏
Pleeeeaaaaase make a patron with longer cuts of your vids oh my god I love seeing your words
New barclay video? Today is gonna be a good damn day
I just need you to know, this is the only video essay I have done research *to watch*. I heard you at the beginning and I went and watched a few other video essays to get an idea of what Succession was, and then immediately came back to watch this. Excellent video btw; I actually understand Faustian bargains now, thanks!
AHHHHHH NEW BIZ!!!! Seeing this video at midnight, and it looks like my plans for sleep have been replaced with 2 and a half hours of arguably hinged media analysis.
ur pretty good at this whole “talking about tv I haven’t seen and comparing it to books I haven’t read” thing. gj.
Never ever watched Succession but I loved your Midnight Mass video so much I am sneaking into the class!!
about nine months late and with zero starbucks but i wanted to say your ability to combine (so-called) high and low culture and your empathy and thoughtfulness is inspiring as fuck and makes for the perfect way to teach my not into philosophy partner why i love philosophy beyond my rants about old greek dudes, so for a million reasons thank you / i love your work
Omg! a big vid on my day off! what a blessing. Can't wait for the Bruce and Even Almighty retrospective
omfg, NEW BIZ BARCLAY VIDEO, _AND_ IT'S ABOUT SUCCESSION?!?!!!? I am *SAT*
Finishing succession has gone from eventual plan to physiological need, don't want to take my 201 class without the text book.
Oh yeah, I remember in the snape wives video when I thought "Damn, this video about Byronic Heroes really changed focus." Only to remember it was about snape.
what a nice birthday gift, thank you biz :)
I don't know what this "Succession" is, but stars know it I'll watch this entire damn video anyway.
I'm at 'Jesus really is just a nepo baby', and I'm pinning it on my own board as we speak. 📌
I'm never telling anyone my specific age again. From now on, it's only "well past my 14th year"
Omg new biz barclay time to drop everything and sit down for 2 and a half hours
INFODUMPING WINE FRIEND, MY LOVE! WELCOME BACK!
i have not watched a single minute of Succession despite everyone and their mother talking abt it online.... but i will watch you talk to me abt it anyway!
I think I am in the wrong class... but I'm staying. Only to get Professor Barclay closer to tenure.
I've never seen Succession, but I come back to this video all the time, because it is seriously one of the top five video essays on this Devil owned platform.
I live for the song drops at the end of these videos, holy shit biz really feeds us well
Omg that intro, amazing
You are a star, possibly a morning star
the only episode of succession season 4 that i watched live WAS the wedding episode. shit was crazy.
Girl, I need that Byron vid injected into my eyeballs asap! Let it be the buckshot to my Hemingway
(I hope your life offers you the opportunity to get that out. All the best. ❤)
it’s a mammoth task tbh so unfortunately it’s definitely gonna be a few months away but rest assured that is because i’m going all in with it ❤️
Yeah, it only now occurs to me just how hard Goethe is to pronounce outside of German. Loved the vid though, thanks again.
Jesus was a nepo baby was exactly the take I came to this video for. Thank you!
Howls in relief! This is getting me through the doomsday landscape the wildfires have created using my hometown
OH NO PLZ STAY SAFE
I haven't watched a second of this series, but FUCK THAT! NEW BIZ VIDEO JUST DROPPED!
seeing this has quite literally saved my entire day 💀
As an avid student of Succession I lived for this video, thank you
never seen succession, don't know what it's about, but i am very excited to watch this c:
Damn. This video really makes me want to try out Succession.....
I'm sorry but, while this is good and detailed and insightful and already on my rewatch list,
NOBODY will ever make a better critique of Succession than Demi Adejuyigbe.
It still gets stuck in my head...
who. will. get. the. kiss. from. DADDY?
WAIT WASN’T HE A GILMORE GUY I LOVED THAT PODCAST WHERE IS THIS CRITIQUE I NEED IT
Sorry, when I say critique, I mean the short song he made! UA-cam search Demi Adejuyigbe + Succession, and just.... it's wonderful
(but still, I do feel like it's a critique, just in short joke song form)
...If you're wondering why I posted the "sheeza genius" comment... came from the series of GIFs and stickers in that handles some of these themes, it all started with the "Sheeza Nangel"/"Heeza Sinna" stickers and grew from there.
I haven't watched Succession, but I will used the materials of this class to study The Fall of the House of Usher, thank you very much.
