Well i am also in same confusion as i am also a CSE student and want to use laptop until next 5-6 years and i think that 16gb variant of m2 will be better because because power wise M2 is still an overkill for most of the development work we will be doing as a student however the problem comes with the limited ram which can cause problem in multitasking my current windows laptop has 8gb ram and it is not sufficient for multiple tabs in different browsers and vs code .Even though Mac are very optimized but in future as the size of apps and websites will increase 8 gb might feel insufficient .What are your thoughts on it?

But if you don't play games then mac is good enough I myself use m2 mac book air which i bought after confirming it from seniors .For cse branch you will get all important softwares (some exceptions might exist but there is an alternative) You can do all things with mac initially you can get some problems with like when teachers will use dev c++ but it is not avalible for mac so you can use vs code in fact after some time you voluntarily use VS code .................. long answer short if you don't play games then you MacBook is very good option.
