  • There was a Star Trek video game released in 1971. The Magnavox Odyssey, the first game console, came out in 1972. Today on Stuff We Play, let's examine all this! Just in time for Star Trek Strange New Worlds, too!
Also, feel free to give me any tips/suggestions for making my upcoming apartment move as headache-free as possible for my husband and I. I'm going to have a proper studio space again and I'm excited! Also any channel memberships and Patreon Pledges and such right now will be going directly towards extra cash while moving, just a heads up.
Check out the C# version of Star Trek '71 over on CodeProject: www.codeproject.com/Articles/...

If you haven't had a chance to see it yet, I co-created an hour and some long documentary with my friend Jonii that we released last month! If you like lost media, Broadway, and/or Pokémon, then maybe you'll enjoy it: ua-cam.com/video/-fukHks29cU/v-deo.html&t

I played this when it came out. Up until a few years ago, I still had the _Dot Matrix_ printout.

I played it quite a bit on an HP2000 (connected through a DecWriter II printing terminal via a 300 baud leased line), in the six or so months before Star Wars hit the theaters in 1977. It's what got me started in software development. I might have some dot matrix printouts of the source code squirreled away somewhere.
Oh, and for the OP, "Irvine" has a *long* "i" in the middle - "urh-vine".

That brings back memories! I took BASIC programming in high school around 1978. Ten class members took turns at the ASR-33 teletype, which communicated with an HP-2000 by an acoustic coupler modem that ran at 10 characters per second. When class demand for the teletype was low, we sometimes played the Star Trek game. Years later, watching The Wrath of Khan and the Enterprise team trying to get the Klingon Bird of Prey to do their bidding reminded me of gathering around the ASR-33 trying to get programs to run.

I'm delighted that Stellar Track got a mention. The Atari 2600 was absolutely not designed to output that level of text, so the fact that it's as faithful as it was to the original is impressive. There was another 2600 title strongly influenced by Star Trek '71 as well, Star Raiders, which was more graphics heavy. Oddly enough, even though that title was more arcade like, it came with a 12 button keypad style controller as a pack-in as it was needed to run the game, whereas the more traditional Stellar Track used the joystick.

I would have loved to dived into that bit further, but perhaps that's a video for another time. The Star Raiders controller alone fascinates me!

I've been playing with the idea of taking all the games from "The Big Yellow Book" -- aka "Basic Computer Games" by David H. Ahl
-- which includes a version of this star trek, and converting them to JavaScript so they can be played online. All of these early game titles are historically important, and we should be making efforts to preserve their experience through something other than emulation.

@@StuffWePlay Of course. It's just unusual for people to like things so completely different as Star Trek and Discovery or Picard. I'm not saying they can't like shows that are so poorly executed and vapid only that it's difficult to reconcile that with being a Star Trek fan.

I got into computers in 1980...I started my gaming on a trs80 model I and this was the first game we played...we loved it...you worked the numeric pad with this game and the instructor liked that aspect of it. I am sure it was a basic variant of what you was playing...I remember the layout details being about the same. Next year I got into the big five games for the trs80 but we still come back to this one from time to time...it was trekie thing. Strategy made this game work well.

Played this in High School (1976) and the teacher was not amused at how much paper I wasted lol. No CRT at that time, good memories. CRT = Cathode Ray Tube monitor. BTW the computer was a "time share" mini computer we had to dial into...all tasks were "time shared"...meaning you had to wait for your task to process.

Played this on Atari, C64, and there was an early 80s arcade machine that used the same rules with vector graphics and really good controls, that was my favorite version

I played that vector graphics version as a kid at Showbiz owned by Nolan Bushnell (now mostly owned by Chuck E. Cheese). I have very vivid, distinct memories of the vector "moving star pattern" photon torpedo graphics.

I played this on a TRS (TRASH) 80. At the time it was fun as heck. This played more like a destryer/Sub schase. Where you know where the enemy is you can't directly see them. Now I have to go looking for it again to play.
