I am a Kansas Troubles addict and Kim Diehl fan. I love the primitive look. I do piecing, EPP and appliqué. I have done other quilts for my grand daughter with fun fabrics.
I love the tulip quilt. I lean more towards florals than anything. I love the 30s and 40s prints too. It's very funny but in most things I'm very Victorian and a little gothic. When you said playing favorites, I automatically thought about making sure I watch you everyday and a few of the others. Lately I've been missing a lot of others I usually watch. I'm still making face mask for my daughter and her coworkers. Hopefully, I'll be finished tomorrow and things can get back to a little normal. 💗😊💗
I bought the same fat quarter bundle at a show last year because I love it too! Like you I don’t know what I’m going to make with it so I just sit and enjoy staring at it every once in awhile.
I can't say I have any colour favourites but I do like variety in my blocks or I tend to get bored and not too small a block . I just want to try everything 😍
I do tend to like and use blue, aqua-green and yellow in most of my quilts. Of course those are my favorite colors. Now that I realize that I’ll try to branch out and use others. I do like the reds and aquas together as in your quilt Pat that was on the wall in your studio.
I tend to use a lot of purple, black and batiks in my quilts. I recently had a mystery quilt that I decided to use this floral fabric. I was a bit worried on if I was even going to like the finished project - but I love it. The other fabric I never use it polka dots - I love how they look in your quilts so I have decided to use them in the Charming Baby Quilt-A-Long.
Dear Pat: Got my star done so I'm caught up for Week 1 of cbb. Still deciding on sashing and corner blocks for April Quilt Along, and have the 30 blocks completed. Love the purple and gold bundle. Ordering some, and it is indeed on sale. Love your gondola block. Italy is totally amazing, especially Venzia/Venice!!!! Hope you can go someday soon. I have a real mix of fabrics and it's those that I love that I buy. I used to tend towards blues, tans, and browns, but now I love the bright, happy colors. Checking out Week 2 on cbb. Thanks again, Pat!
I really like Jo Morton and Kim Diehl color ways. Usually block of the month type quilts. I did a grandmother’s flower garden with florals and solids. I have a lot of leftovers that I need to use. I do like appliqué, also.
Purple. Need I say more?!?! This has ALWAYS been my favorite color for the last 70 years (out of 70 years!) I do your quilts and quilts from Mystery Quilts Anonymous. I sometimes do a couple of others that are freebies. These keep me very busy. I did make a bargello quilt last year, my first one, and it was in purple and teal!!! On your Blocks of the Week,, my husband and I go through my stash and choose similar colors and patterns. I DO love your group of fat quarters!!!
I'm a purple girl too. If any fabric gets put on our guild's free table, if I don't get to the purple right away, my friends will grab it for me! Nobody else gets any purple :)
I love to do applique and I collect Wm. Morris fabrics. We have a wonderful quilt designer here in Adelaide - Michelle Hill, who does the most gorgeous William Morris applique Quilts. Michelle has produced some wonderful books using Morris fabrics. I also love pretty feminine fabric collections. My most recent was a FQ Bundle of Clover Meadow by Jan Patek (Moda) its lovely purples, greens and creams. I'm still deciding on the quilt design - working on it with my sketch and graph books at the ready.
Where I tend to branch out is when I'm making for other people. For myself I'm always using colors that go with what's in my house. We bought a 1925 Tudor house recently. I have lots of old furniture. I gravitate to reproduction fabrics with saturated colors. For others I think about the person and what they would like which is often something totally different from what I'd make for myself. It gives me an opportunity to work with other colors and patterns that wouldn't work for my taste. It's nice since it gives me a chance to experiment and change it up.
I don't think I play favorites because I have used fabric blocks that I wasn't real keen on, but once I put the quilt together for some one else I said I wouldn't mind having this one for myself. I do agree with you it is color combination because once again, I have seen really bright, modern fabric and did not tend to gravitate that way until I saw a quilt someone made with that type fabric and I thought wow, that is really pretty. Just like the stay at home quilt, I would never had thought of using Dr. Seuss fabric for a quilt and when you said find and use fabric that make you happy that is what came to mind. I thought I will make this a memory quilt because there are memories that make us happy. As I thought about my childhood, there were a few things that stuck out and one was Dr. Seuss books. My mom ordered books through the mail I think for me or at least I seemed to claim them. They were Dr. Seuss books and I would look at and read them for hours. I believe those books gave me a love for books. That was just a happy memory and I relive it as I make my blocks each day. Thanks for the challenge.
My favorite fabrics are the 1930s reproductions. I tend to love the colors used in your tulips wall hanging. I use your quilt alongside to use this idea of using fabrics from my shelves and color combinations. Love your Oh My Stars!
Playing favorites, or maybe playing color/style avoidance might be more accurate in my case. Lately Judy Neimeyer patterns in batiks, I really love batiks. Although lately I have been challenges as elder asked me to repair a beloved comforter. It was a really struggle for me to work on it. I wanted to keep its original style but so much of it was beyond repair. In the end I replaced blocks with similar fabric. Where the fabric could be saved but needed coverups, I made grandmother garen flowers from the fabric of other blocks that had to be removed. I still need to find a border fabric for the quilt as I needed to cut down blocks due to fraying. So that definetly took me outside my box as it had plaids and some of the saveable blocks were made from a brocade. It had been an old styel scrap quilt and ha definetly been so loved by both maker and user. As for my own choices in the fabrics I see little to pastels or much black, not much in the cartoon area either, so it is interesting that a friend recently gifted a bundle to me of Abi Hall's WIld & Free from MODA. I usually dont start mystery sew alongs until they are all posted; maybe I should try that, and as you said in one of your post about using fabric rather than "Saving it" I feel I should use this fabric right away.
I just love the Oh My Stars quilt pattern. The Oh My Stars quilt that is behind you what size blocks did you use since they look smaller than charm squares.
In a world that has many specialists I tend to think of myself as a generalist being fluent in many " color languages" and design styles. I have been known to sneak a civil war print into a modern pattern or a abstract fabric into a traditional quilt. I love and admire most styles. My key strength in life is flexibility and that applies to my quilts as well. I so enjoy looking at peoples quilts and color combinations. I also realize a combination that I don't particularly enjoy one year might become my favorite the next. Purple was not one of my favorites and this year I am trying it out.
I've always loved Tula Pinks fabric, but I'm more blues, browns, rose colors. I did pick up her fabrics when I find them on sale, not knowing what I would do with them until your Stay@Home qal. I've even ordered more of her fabric so I can do more blocks! 😁
I need to use some darker colors or primitive prints. I gravitate towards bright colors. I am doing two sets of daily blocks, one set is with farm charm. I love the sheep and the horses are cool too. I may intersperse some panel blocks withe the daily blocks.
My current favourite is Tula Pink. I notice I love bright colours rather than pastels probably due to being registered blind and seeing the contrasts is easier when colours are defined strongly
Hi pat, I love your videos, it's a cheery part of my day. But I am in a funk and can't seem to get going on making anything. 😞. I wanted to ask about the quilt behind you, it's red and white fabric and the blocks look like Suns. Dud you make that pattern? Can you let me know where I can find it? It's out of my normal things I do, it's looks a little difficult but maybe that is something I could try. Thanks again for your cheery videos and giving us lots of info and things to try. I am trying to work on Out West but just need to get going! 😊
Good morning, okay, I thought about this and I’m pretty much all over the map when it comes to fabric purchases... except for novelty fabric. I almost never buy novelty fabric. In fact, to make the April Stay at Home sew along I had to buy what I consider novelty fabric (Safari Life). I do really like the cows, chickens, sheep, and horses in the farm fabric you mentioned and I’m thinking about buying a layer cake of that. But, then what would I do with it? It’s a mystery. Thank you for these daily challenges, tips, and conversations. I ❤️ you too Pat.
As far as color of fabrics I seem to always be out of everything except green, so maybe green is one of my least favorites to us? Also reds, i tend not to use much reds... but then again, I tend to make a red/wh quilt every so many years. LOL Style of quilts I do favorite cute and country, as well as applique over modern. I did reach out and do a modern quilt a few years ago and I still hate it. But this year I"m reaching out and doing a bordello(sp?) quilt, and possibly a One block wonder... but that one kind of scares me still, so it will have to wait just a bit. I started a hexi quilt years ago and still love working on it, but slowly and it's my travel block quilt, so I can go slow with it. : )
I have a really hard time working with purple as I do not care for that color. Another color you will never likely see in my quilts is aqua. I just don't get the obsession some have with that color. I like reds and greens and other colors (to avoid making all my quilts look like Christmas!).
I loved hearing you talk about colors and styles that we have never used. I know I've never used polka dots or many purples. The one color I stay away from is gray. I have NO gray clothes or fabrics. I truly dislike it as it was the color of the skirt I made in Home Ec. It was so awful it ended up in the rag bag! My Mom was one who could tailor full length coats with linings for the three of us for Easter with matching dresses. I also tend to stay away from browns also. I remember Dad, in the fifties, working on getting Mom into more colorful clothes and out of gray, browns and tans. They were the most well dressed and colorful people after that. Dad would match his suits to Mom's dress for formal photos. We always told him he was a spiffy dresser and he was! Thanks for the jolt about colors and patterns. Can't wait to start the GLOW pattern. Hope I do it justice. Your work is incredible and I don't know how you do so very much. Stay safe and have a sparkling day.
I'm going to make a Little Wishes block with a print I don't really like, but the color fits with another block of similar color and I don't want that block to be a stray. So, that is a bit out of my comfort zone.
I like everything from Civil war and thirties reproduction to beautiful modern florals, I gravitate to red and cream French General Fabrics. They are my absolute favourites! And I stay away from batiks and most purple fabrics 😉 I am working on choosing fabric for a Dresden quilt that I’ve always wanted to make. I might finally open my Tula Pink bundle for that. Thank you for the daily challenges.
That's funny - I love purple and batiks and I'm not so keen on civil war. We would be great quilting friends because we wouldn't fight over the same fabric!
I love Kaffe Fassett, I did break out and do an all red quilt. I am really happy that I made it! Otherwise it’s the blue and greens. I need to make one with a dark background.
I've made scrappy. I've never made all solids. In fact I'm starting to buy solids because I don't have any. The top gray you showed, I have s top about the same color.
I am loving these daily chats/challenges. I would love to know how you display your quilts in your living room. Do you hang them on the walls or just drape them on the couch. Relatively new quilter here and looking for ideas on how to display.
I have to say I skip around fabric wise. I have traditional fabrics & patterns, bright colors & prints & a mystery quilt with Kaffe fabric. If I’m making a quilt for someone I consider their interests or reason why I’m making it for them. I do find on those type of quilts I get stuck on familiar patterns. A lot like you remake the Traffic pattern. I think it’s because we can already see the finished quilt as we pick out fabric & sew. Thanks for the videos & the different subjects to ponder.
First thing I noticed was your outfit for today, love it! Next thing was the Oh My Stars quilt! I absolutely love that color combination and the black gingham with the red binding is spectacular! Have a wonderful day!
I really look forward to these daily chats! I haven't really used polka dots in my quilts very often but you use them in almost every quilt and I'm going to add them to my next quilt for sure. If there is ever a free day on the calendar I would love to know more about how you hang your quilts. You talked about changing them out in your living room and I would love to do this and maybe start making smaller quilts with that intention. Have a good day.
Love your video today. I am a person that tends to lean toward the uncomplicated and I love cheerful colors. Dark colors tend to be depressing to me. I did branch out and bought a kit of Tula pink fabric. I tend to shy away from vibrant showy fabrics and I’m not a big fan of large vibrant colors even though I like bright and cheery. But I’m working at it.
Pat, I'm sorry I asked about the tulip quilt behind you. I was impatient and asked too soon. You answered my question. I went on line and ordered your book.
I am always drawn to the softer, subtle, muted range of colors but my blocks can get a bit lost in the quilting process. So I am slowly changing to more vibrant colors. Will see if I stick with that. So far have used reds and dark teals in the Out West blocks which may be interesting how that sits with me when done.
I put the final border on my quil from your block a week sew along summer 2019. I love the look of the checkerboard border, but NEVER again...so many 2 1/2” squares!!!
I love the colors you chose for the Oh My Stars Quilt behind you. I find that no matter what colors I am working with on a quilt, I get tired of them by the end. I may start out really loving them, but after working with them so much, they become Blah. I wonder if anyone else feels this way?
Thanks Pat!!
I love the tulip quilt. It's so happy .!
Love the fabric bundle you showed...the colors are exactly what I have in mind for a quilt I want to do. Will do a search for it..The Mrs

I tend to always go with bright colors! I am just now working on a more neutral color quilt. The acorn caps quilt from sew sampler! Loving it it!

Susan Voth I am doing the April stay at home with novelty fabrics. I am calling mine an I Spy quilt for my grandkids
I usually buy florals. My daughter thought I needed some polka dots & bought me some. Yes, I tend to make a certain pattern of quilt several times!
Aurifil should sponsor you a trip to see them in Italy, for being such a great promotor of them. Hey Aurifil are you listening? 🤣
My Dad's family are from Italy. Always wished I could go there.
I have that fat quarter pack and wondering what to do with it. Lookin forward you see what you come up with
Love your oh my stars quilt behind you. I always gravitate to Cory Yoder, Lori Holt, Fig Tree, and small 30’s prints
How about Marvelous May Challenges
Love the Oh My Stars! Your daily’s are fun and inspiring, take care. Many Thanks

Yes Jennifer you’re right! We are lucky to be quilters now with so much variety available to please everyone 😊
That is connecting threads. I have ordered lots from this company and love their fabric, products and service.

I play favorite I usually lean toward jewel tones, but want to do a red, white, and black quilt
I have a sweater on in the same pattern as your jacket today - great minds think alike😉
I think I need to make the tulip wall hanging! I got the “all seasons “ book a month ago... Time to start!
Love your video today. I am a person that tends to lean toward the uncomplicated and I love cheerful colors. Dark colors tend to be depressing to me. Oh no poor Norm got put in the corner. He needs a summer outfit and a lady friend.
What do you put on the back to hang the quilt? Are you going to continue this daily video, just ove them, thank you!
Hi pat love the daily challenges, the coffee mug Mimi quilt behind you is pretty , do you by chance know the pattern? Thanks
Pat, I love the small tulip quilt on the wall behind you. What is that?
@House in North Carolina It is from her Celebrate the Seasons book, link below the video
I love the colors you chose for the Oh My Stars Quilt behind you. I find that no matter what colors I am working with on a quilt, I get tired of them by the end. I may start out really loving them, but after working with them so much, they become Blah. I wonder if anyone else feels this way?
