  • Featured here are the Dec 3rd 2013 TV News Reports on the analogue tv system shut down in Sydney from ABN 2 & ATN 7 as they were respectively identified when television in Sydney began for Channel 2 in September 1956 and Channel Seven on 2nd December 1956.
It’s weird feeling nostalgic for a mode of TV system, analogue terrestrial broadcasting, as electronics has advanced so much since television began but for those who can remember, 40 & over, I guess it’s the passing of time and change and turning off what was ostensibly running since 1956 well, it’s a reminder of an era long gone and all the people and values that time period stood for up until about 2000.
I love the quality of DVBT when its good and watching analogue on a plasma screen was the equivalent of watching a VHS video as the two modes definitely don’t complement each other.
The main Sydney digital channels still identify themselves to their VHF Origins but that legacy appears a bit quaint, as the identification they still use for main channels seems irrelevant as the idea of the mode of transmission these days is very broad and maybe the originators struggle to survive in a world of media convergence.
Licensed Terrestrial Broadcasters are desperately trying to cling to their idea of monopoly and invincibility when all around them, minus an actual transmitter, all of us in some way can transmit an idea or image or concept without the aid of them and their business conglomerate, broadly speaking.
I guess the passing of analogue on a human level reminds me of how sterile things appear now. To draw a strange kind of analogy, analogue was like a human, not infallible and prone to vagaries of distance transmission distortion, imperfections in its state of being like humans but digital as a broadcast system, is a very precise transmission and clinical in its overall manner of being and we can as humans attempt to be clinical and perfect in every way but it’s not possible, though I think the soul of humanity is fading through over pervasive technology.
Analogue in its early stages appeared more imperfect and human like and went out of its way to warm and charm us, by contrast the digital broadcast age appears more cold, literally picture perfect and superficially glossy, something which we must aspire to be ? TV doesn’t charm as much anymore, it’s a cool almost harsh world of reality, sold as entertainment.
I don’t want to go back in time and bury my head in the sand and walk blindly, though I think we could go back a bit the other way and offer more humanity and hope in our lives on tv than just bottom line based unscripted reality and song show downs.
Maybe showing my age but I remember more and derive more inspiration from good scripted tv, than I ever did watching just a bunch of live images with a few competition carrots thrown in.
I say thanks to the pioneers of the early television days and leave you with a final goodbye from Tommy Leonetti and the close down credits from ATN 7 Sydney.

    Edits from the original:
•When the kangaroo pulls the window shade the word “Good Night” was replaced by “Goodbye” followed by the tv man turning off the screen.

Oh wow, someone who actually played the closer !
    Thanks for the kind comments.
The V/O station closer version here must be from the colour days.
I remember watching the station closer in 1969 on a 22 inch Bush Simpson B & W valve set, I was 6 and stayed up late a few times, not a school night and the memory of this song, plus bed time kangaroo is so strong that I can't stop watching it because of all the memory triggers. It feels the time it came from but long gone from today.

I was actually scared of the Kangaroo Closer when I was a child - couldn't watch it! Years later at ATN I would see it each night when I began in TV and wondered what the fuss was all about, in fact I loved it! I think I have a copy of the closer in the garage on 2" somewhere - I should donate it as it's probably one of only a few copies taken directly from the film master...

Very nice compilation Barry! The number of times I played that closer to air from 1977 until 24 hour transmission began (ACR cart number 900026), I couldn't count! It's interesting to see that ATN was the only station to put together an albeit short tribute by playing the old closer and saying 'Good Bye'! I wonder if Tommy Leonetti ever gave a thought to his image being one of the last on analogue Tele in Sydney - I would like to think so. Again, nice job and thanks for taking the time to let us reflect on it all...!

Is it me, or does the "Let's All Be There" campaign from Seven Network sound almost exactly like the campaign NBC ran in the mid-1980s?

And the "Watch Us Now" I do believe is from "the other ABC", the American one.... It isn't strange that foreign networks buy SUCCESSFUL American marketing campaigns from years past (Brazil's SBT, their 2nd largest broadcast network, also used NBC's "Be There" / "Let's All Be There" campaigns as "Acha Aqui").

National is no longer existing. The current renaissance of National is Panasonic. Both companies are Japan-based (Matsushita Electronics Corporation).

    • @syxepop
      @syxepop 3 роки тому +1

Actually, Matsushita changed the name of the whole company a while ago to Panasonic Corporation.
Matsushita used the National brand name in Japan's domestic market and probably some other nearby Asian countries while they used the Panasonic brand name elsewhere. I do believe nowadays the use the Panasonic brand name worldwide.
PS: Panasonic also made the first ATSC 1.0 -compatible equipment in US... (now we're taking "baby steps" to its' replacement, ATSC 3.0)

I watch Looney Tunes on analog TV, long before digital TV and cable came in 2001 for one thing, girl powered TV cartoon The Powerpuff Girls and even Ed Edd n Eddy, an LOL animated comedy on Cartoon Network. And then, in summer 2009, epic transition to digital begins. For one notice, my family already have Comcast and digital TV, so... I'm fine yet disappointed that I won't watch the final signoff before forever snow or special morning edition on WPTV or WPEC channels 5 or 12. Oh, well.

I see what you mean. I first saw it on June 15th 2021 when checking out analog sign offs because I was interested in them for some reason, and the second I saw that face, I literally felt my skin jump and shake in terror. It almost felt like it was about to escape inside itself. However, after slowly exposing myself to it throughout the next 2 weeks, the fear disappeared fast.
