This guitar was built three months before I got there in November. I think I know who built this guitar, but I can't be sure, so I'll just keep that to myself because I don't want to credit the wrong guy. It's funny to me when I hear someone say it's an employee guitar like they built the whole guitar themselves. Nothing is further from the truth. It goes through the same process as any other guitar. Made by the same employees who make all the guitars. Not even Customs were made by one individual. An employee could custom order a guitar but often had to wait until that model was being produced. The only guitars that had priority were for the elite Gibson players like Page, BB King, Nugent, and others. To be honest, only 4 men could actually cut the wood to make the bodies, necks, and fingerboards because those machines were CNC, computer numerical controlled, and very expensive. In November 1993, Henry sent his machine operators, 6 guys, to Michigan to learn how to operate a new machine that arrived a few days after Thanksgiving. They were gone until August 1994. Almost ten months had passed before they returned. In the meantime, only one person with 16 years of experience with CNC's ran the entire solid body department. They made all the bodies, all the fretboards, and half the necks. All total that came to approximately 125k guitars. So when you hold a Gibson, no matter the model, Special, Standard, Custom, or Centennial, you're more than likely holding a guitar created by Michael Ancell. The unknown Luther who saved Gibson's ass from losing millions of dollars. I see a lot of people taking credit for the work this man did by himself because without him, Gibson would have made 1/3 the guitars they made that year. Without his knowledge and ability to create the fixtures he made, nothing would have been done, nothing. 1994 would have been a disaster and only a handful even know about that guy...
I think the *“wine”* is actually the *brown finish stain* that was accidentally spilled on it while finishing. Note that it is marked *“BR”* in the neck pickup cavity at the 9:40 mark. After the spill, it didn’t look nice on the inside so they covered it up with an opaque goldtop paint job! 😊 Now this R&D prototype can be sold to an employee!
I own the Gretsch Country Gentleman because of George Harrison using one and my bass player was a Hugh Beatles Fan! It’s a great guitar and with the snap on back pad there’s no buckle rash! I think Gibson missed the boat with the back pad!
Man. What a sweet guitar. I always wanted any of the chet atkins models that gibson produced during the 90s. His slim line solid body acoustics are amazing as well.
wow. i think you just added a guitar to list i didnt know i had. thats one of the best sounding guitars iv seen on the channel. those mellow tones hit hard.
Yeah, the frets don’t grow, the fretboard shrinks. That’s what causes fret sprout, so, yeah. I’m going to guess the wine spill may have killed the neck pickup.
@ corrosion, it can get sticky when it dries. It can get messed up if someone takes off the tape and tries to dry it, without knowing what they’re doing. Basically, it can happen with any liquid.
As soon as he said "Chet Atkins" I immediately had flashbacks of reading Musician's Friend catalogs in the mid/late 90's and seeing that "Chet Atkins" super 4000 guitar for $39,999.99 and just being shocked in my early teen mind that a guitar that only had 25 made was in a catalog, lol.
I had a 1988 or 1989 GIBSON COUNTRY GENTLEMAN in sunrise orange. Wide body thin line guitar. As I recall, the arm rest was in the case, optionally to be installed. I didn’t. Gold hardware. Like every guitar 🎸 I’ve ever sold, I wish I still had it.
"Chester And Lester" is the duet Chet Atkins and Les Paul did while they still had the chance. It's a personal favorite CD of mine. You might enjoy their rendition of "Caravan." Loved the guitar, BTW.
Hi. Removal of the armrest is simple if you don't do what I did. I assumed it was stuck directly to the body of the guitar. On mine there was a wood (ebony?) plate that is held to the body with 2 screws. The celluloid is glued to that plate and has to be removed from the plate to access the screws. The celluloid can be removed fairly easily with a little heat
Huge John Denver fan in high school. Some of the first songs I learned to play on guitar. Still have almost every album he made. Nostalgia…. makes me wanna get them out and put them on my record player!
Love all the Chet stuff. I even have a few old Standel amps. I played the black gibson thin acoustic Chet for years. I sold it to a friend. I always think about trying to buy it back. This gold hollow body is amazing.
My friends dad had a blonde LP custom with a maple neck and gold hardware. I remember being in awe of that guitar at 12 years old. He would let us play it under supervision. The part that amazed me most was the flip out tuners. That guy Warren was the one who introduced me to all of it.
It was after GUITAR SHOW that I seen 2 Gold Top LPs , with Gold Hardware They were Fabulous, then bought Gold Hardware for my 90s LPs , All Gold 1960 , Gold Top 56 Reissue used Both when I played out . Turned out had P100s instead of P90 soap bars , changed back 5:years to Nickel. Played Joe Walsh Turn To Stone on it , 86 Marshall Artist combo single 12 " EL 34 tubes Sounded Great on All my guitars , Custom 335 , both LPs , Jimmy Page double neck ,later bought Marshall Half Stack . After being diagnosed Multiple Sclerosis sold all but 1 Gold Top , had collection of Basses as well , Ric 4003 Black , V63 Maple , Thunderbird, Epiphone Korina CS sticker 2015 Exployer. Still play out 2 decades of MS , Ampeg V4B HLF 6X10 set up at Church .
Chromite aka Balsa wood is an excellent insulator. It was used inside of ships to help insulate cold, hull vibrations, and for buoyancy. Do vibrations matter in a guitar? Opinions vary lol! I love my Les Paul Light, but strange choice for guitars.
But Chet played a Gretsch with filter tron pups.Thats funny a cork sniffer would have to be the one tovpay 10k for the guitar and then spill wine all in it.
Really enjoy your channel. That's 1 Sweet guitar.Stain & all. American made Parkers have side dots-but nothing on the fretboard. That took some getting used to. "Spill the Wine"🍷🎶
It's not the same thing, but when I was 16 years old, the guitarist in the band i was in got a brand new black Les Paul. It had a hardshell case with a white interior. On the day i stopped by his house to see it, a similar spill happened. Not on the guitar, but in the case. And what was spilled all over that white interior? Chocolate milk. Not only did it look bad, but it smelled bad as well. Always close your case and latch the latches, even when the guitar is not in the case. I sure do.
When I bought my Les Paul Classic in the winter of '98/'99, I remember the Musician's Friend catalogue I bought it through having an ad alongside it for a Gibson Chet Atkins hollowbody or semi-hollow for somewhere in the price range of $50,000-$70,000. Does anyone know what model that was? I don't recall it being a special edition. I've heard others say they've seen the exact same ad before.
I’m wondering if that was a body that had dye/finish spilled on it (hence the “BR” marking in the pickup cavity), it was put in a reject pile, and someone rescued it. It was painted gold to hide the staining. I also wonder if the ribbon protected the finish from the off-gassing rather than reacting with the finish. Would be interesting to see if others have a similar line.
It seems plausible the gold finish was a specific request and it was put on an existing brown body. The neck may have originally been on another (older) guitar. Perhaps the neck was laying around because somehow the side dots were not installed at the time it was manufactured.
Would be cool to see a melding of the Country Gentleman and the '54 Les Paul Custom. Like if the two greats collaborated on a singular guitar with the favourite specs from each man
Bet that maybe 1 or 2 of these centennials have ever seen a stage. As if the guitar was blessed like a ship with a bottle of champagne. It sound real rich as if there is a chorus in there..How does it sound acoustic..it’s like an acoustic guitar with pickups..Really appreciate your LP knowledge and some of these guitars..thx for the review
11:00 My theory, this instrument was originally supposed to be brown, and there was an accident during staining. Something spilled onto the top during the finish staining process and spilled into the interior. Once the interior has been compromised with unwanted stain the guitar would most likely have been set aside. Possibly, at a later date an employee figured the guitar could be salvaged by changing the finish and personally purchasing it with many of the anniversary accoutrements. Or, a bunch of wine was spilled into it. I would think you could remove much of the red wine stain with a diluted bleach/vinegar solution. All in all, a great find and most likely a one of one (due to the staining mishap).
Can you do a MIJ Epiphone Trogly? Just picked up a 2003 MIJ Epiphone Es-335 and it totally rips. Would be curious to know your thoughts on one. Preferably a domestic version with the gibson headstock 😄
I think WilliamHaisch is on to something. I too think there was a mishap during the finishing process and the stains inside the guitar are from the wood stain Gibson was using.
2:56 Trogly says: ‘The guitars themselves were adorned with gold-plated knobs that aged terribly...’ We expect you to convince us that this is good-a wonderfully aged, desirable patina-to increase the price, prevent us from complaining, and instead praise Gibson. The wine spill competes with the patina for time spent on talking points. Now, let’s argue about whether the wine is Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, which is better to drink, tastes best, does the least harm to the guitar and what wine type is most aesthetically pleasing if you were to experience your own cocktail party, wine-spilling faux pas, and proper social function etiquette versus negotiating deals in the used guitar marketplace.
1:39 that’s a DC Special.. the red gold and black remind me of an Iron Man armor. Edit: the blacklight exposing the ribbon line across the guitar… man lacquer just reacts to EVERYTHING!
I have a 94 centennial Gibson... it's not part of the custom series, it's just regular USA production SG Special Ebony with ebony board I was stumped about the serial number for years, until I found a comprehensive Gibson serial index. Oh, centennial year Gibson number.
I am curious about something with all the guitars you have do you keep them in tune with the full tension on them or do you take tension off the strings if you’re not playing them
The Gibson efforts at replicating a Gretsch were largely lamentable, and overpriced. I find it staggering that Gibson to this day produce the vast majority of their f hole semi hollow guitars without bound f holes, and with inferior craftsmanship and QC compared to guitars such as Eastman that cost a fraction of the price. Will the cache of owning a Gibson ever wane and if not,why not?!
Could those stains be from the original brown finish that the Chet Atkins Gibson’s came with then refinished by Gibson years ago. Maybe it was rejected due to the spill of stain???🤷🏻♂️
i’m hoping someone sees this, but on one of his last gibson vault/garage episodes he mentioned a “less” paul… i’ve been looking to no success for more information and can’t find any; could someone point me in the right direction?
I think if the guitars are openly displayed, they're not subject as much to the off gassing problems. That could also explain the wine......... I also always loved the Chat Atkins in Hollywood album cover. Seeeexy!!!!!

Frets aren’t expanding, the wood is shrinking. Probably due to low humidity I’m guessing.
Yeah, so funny to hear people say fret sprout.
The more you use your new camera the more I appreciate it. Love getting those detailed internal views.
LOL @ "glue stains"... Looks like somebody dumped a bottle of Merlot in there!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Right😂
ROFL…my guess was Merlot too.
I hear blood staines though xD
I know when I hear Country Gentleman, I think Gretsch. Maybe a video comparing Gibson and Gretsch Country Gentlemen?
I own the Gretsch Country Gentleman because of George Harrison using one and my bass player was a Hugh Beatles Fan! It’s a great guitar and with the snap on back pad there’s no buckle rash! I think Gibson missed the boat with the back pad!

Agree with what you said and love that body shape too and armrest piece and the regular pickguard.... beautiful guitar!
The shrinking binding on the neck makes it look like the whole neck is scalloped. Cool.
Nice! I can always tell when Trogly likes a guitar. His playing skills go up several notches.
I was telling my kiddo that yesterday.
Good observation 👍
I love my Centennial Hummingbird. Best tone it just chimes and playability is wonderful.
I’ve got one of the SJ100s. Definitely a cut above.
Yeah, the frets don’t grow, the fretboard shrinks. That’s what causes fret sprout, so, yeah. I’m going to guess the wine spill may have killed the neck pickup.
How would wine break a guitar pickup though? Any ideas?
@ corrosion, it can get sticky when it dries. It can get messed up if someone takes off the tape
and tries to dry it, without knowing what they’re doing. Basically, it can happen with any liquid.
Forget the Jerry Cantrell “Wino” this is the ‘Drunken Gentlemen’ 🍷 💛
Lol!
I really love the articulation of this guitar. And it has a breathiness to its voice I really like. Well done.
Love these detective episodes
1:55 oh boy do I want one of those EDS 1275’s… I got a lot of saving to do lol
In 94 I bought the Centennial Hummingbird...sold it in hard times and kicked myself in the ass ever since. Don't sell your Hummingbirds, Lads.
I wont❤
Lock it back up
"Spill the wine, take that pearl..." It was Lonnie Jordan from WAR who spilled the wine, Trogly.
The red stain could be the red stain that was common on the Gents. I would be leaning to the gold being sprayed over the red stain.
Maybe you're right and that's how it became an employee guitar. No way they could sell that body with the stain very visible through the F holes.
I would tend to agree.

So many es guitars lately. Never thought I’d miss all the les Paul coverage
These last couple of semi hollow body type videos have been a breath of fresh air
I work at a small shop in WV and we have a 93 Gibson Chet. I’ve never ever been a Gibson guy, but that guitar is undeniably good.
I too work at a small shop in Barboursville WV
@@trapperjohn8481i dont though!
Nor do I.
😊
@@trapperjohn8481 do you indeed have a momma who's a mountain? lol

Yup, I agree, someone spilled their red wine ...
Looks like somebody threw a drink at the thing while it hung on the wall
I love that middle position tone. Sweet tone.
“Mr. Sandman”… that goes back a ways.
Beautiful looking and sounding guitar Trogly! I hope you keep this one it sounds fantastic and you played good on it too!

Maybe the red is deoxit? It looks like the color of that oily electronic cleaner to me like someone just went crazy with it.
That gold finish is just superb! If Gibson offered it on production ES models I'd lose my mind!
11:27 Someone’s crazy idea of having the very first Country Gentleman wine 🍷 coaster I guess.
Absolutely Awesome!👍🏽♥️👍🏽

love your reviews, very interesting.
"dude!!! seriously???"
great film brother!
id say that "wine spill stain" would up the value by a grand....one of a kind lol!
Cough cough it is a B6 bigsby also found on his gretsch models and the pitting in there can be normal for the bigsbys that dont get the black paint

That makes a lot of sense since the very prominent flame was covered.
That ink stamp is clearly 1994
That is 100% a red wine stain inside that dGent!
I know I already commented but 10:51 threw me for a loop 😂
Could this have been made for Chet Atkins but rejected?
Looks like wine.
Very similar specs to my 'Gibson 2018 ES275 Emerald City Gold Custom' made in the Memphis plant.
Beautiful

I saw that guitar emporium post on reverb a week ago.

Very nice Chetty
Someone in the customshop spilled his coffee and thats why this model never surfaced😅
Br maybe means bronze.
Absolutely red wine.
I usually hate massive semi-hollows like this, but somehow I really like this one despite all its flaws
Expected some terrible Ted for the overdrive demo! Sounds smooth. ‘57 p/u are also smooth clean and distorted.
Definitely a Merlot
It's almost a true Wine Red finish, lol.
That is a seriously beautiful guitar. I’m betting it’s a nice player.
Unrelated to the video but I personally think that an epiphone wilshire pro done up to have the body like a 335 would be cool to have
What in the world would be the point of that? Do you just want a 335 with the Batwing headstock?
You could really piss off Jerry Cantrell and nickname it Wino
10:23 this is 100% wine
I thought Chet was Gretch lol
This is the famous Asti Spumante model.
