Woah, that lens looks huge! Probably it has great charisma and nice sense of humour...
I promise my lens is a grower, not a shower!
4:33 The swirly edges of the CCTV lens just gave so much more character! Fooled me - turns out the more "pro" lens was more "flawless"... and more boring. NGL even I get tricked with the mattebox + monitor setup, it does make you look more pro LOL
You always see this with the high end lenses. They're sort of clinical. One of the reasons I use the risespray 25 and 35 mm.
People do judge. I once had someone tell me they were booking someone else cause his camera was bigger than mine. Ha. Literally that’s what they said. But I’m glad I didn’t get that one, as I know they would have been a pain in the …
Haha!
That's what she said
I remember buying a mattebox and showing up on set with it and people were blown away and taking pictures. Still had my cheap lenses and 7d at the time. They have no clue they just go by the looks.
Derierre?
The last comment in the video is actually true. A 90 dollar matte box will make ANY setup look more professional 😊
I have a set of these CCTV lenses (25mm/35mm/50mm) and they're super fun and give shockingly good results!
I'd love to see how people would react if someone showed up with one mounted on a big chunky cinema camera, that'd be a true test lol
I got the risepray 25 and 35. They got heaps of that swirley bokeh, are sharp and honestly way better built than you'd expect. I use them on MFT.
I once used a big lens on a little camera, and someone remarked on how big the camera was, not realising where the camera stopped and the lens started… my guess is that everyone except camera geeks would just see a cool camera and assume the lens must be good too haha
Closest I've been able to get is putting a Helios 44-2 on an Alexa Classic, it's a helluva a sight! I'd describe it as... let's say cold shower, hahahaha.
My main lens that I use for real estate work is a Laowa 9mm f2.8 and it's tiny, about the size of a film canister. Unfortunately it wasn't $20 from ebay. It was closer to $800AU from Laowa's own website. Had one client ask about it. Told them it was about $1000 and they didn't mention it again.
I’ve been on No budget film sets, and the DP what is busting out his fancy Arri Alexa. But with the type of shots he was getting in the budget of the project. It just felt like overkill. It also had a lot of problems which wouldn’t have happened on my Sony nex7 haha. That whole shoot will just fancy equipment over filmmaking. They seriously took up half an hour of shoot time to get drone footage that they weren’t planning on using.
This is why I’ve been following your channel for so long. You keep it about filmmaking and not gear.
Yeah stuff like that it basically the reason why I make DSLRguide videos haha, trying to prove that you don’t need the fancy gear
I used to watch you daily in December 2015, can't believe it's been so long! I just cannot cope with the fact. It felt so good watching your videos. I remember like it was yesterday. You were amazing!
Haha so true about the matte box XD
I begrudgingly love everything about those sennheisers. Excellent ad placement. Cool look out of the CCTV lens, too!
I've been on jobs where the higher priced kit was rented specifically to inflate the EQ budget to more justify the bid to the clients.
Standard practice in the recording-studio industry for decades. The owners knew 90% of the gear would never be used, but its presence was used to justify inflated studio rates.
wild. that type of inefficiency would bother me so much haha even if it’s not my money that’s being wasted
Thanks for the video, always love subtle humor.
lol - "Yeah, Why not..." Great line.
Thank you.
reminded me of the wonderful set of Pentax Asahi lenses
beeing deep in the corporate stuff... got to dig myself out with a privat project before the transformation into a machine ...
thank you very much for this reminder
Wow dude! I didn't notice the Ordinary Things clip at first. Amazing!
People newer change! All needs a show!
love this!
Haha this video felt so warm to my heart Simon. I was wondering about the same thing as this year I started working with my old canon too even though I've been following your philosophy about focusing on the art rather than the gear for years now thanks to you. And I too ended up getting a matte box and surprise surprise clients looked more confident with me lol. Besides that I'm probably 5 ish years younger than you if i remember correctly about your age, anyway I was a teenager when I started watching you 5 years ago, and binged all your older videos too, so that last canon clip put a big smile on my face and i laughed. Ah, i'm just grateful to continue this journey along with you!
that's awesome to hear, so glad you're sticking to focusing on the creative side, I know it's not easy! I'm 26 now, that clip was from my first video back in 2012 :) also - thanks for being here :)
I was close! I'm 20 now:) And of course mate, I'm gonna be here till the day i pass
you’re not the first to ask for it, so I’ll sneak it in somewhere :)
😂😂😂That closing scene was funny AF
Nice work! Can you tell us more about the lens and the system you use to mount it to the camera? Love a video on that!
I think I’ll do a UA-cam short about it, good idea thanks!
here you go! ua-cam.com/users/shortstDEhCEL622Q
This video got me back into the c-mount lens rabbit hole and I just ordered one of these
the zooms you can get are wild
I was following u since 8 years n ur amazing ❤person.
I agree with them. In my opinion the A shot looks better. Love the video!
I remember using my 24mm pancake lens for a photoshoot and they said do you have bulkier lenses than that? 😅 people do judge
thanks for sharing, were you able to go ahead with the shoot? and were they happy with the images?
Thank you for this experiment.
Nice!!!❤❤
Ha! "Well, the short version..." 🤣
petition to see the full sequence in both c mount and cine lens!
unfortunately I didn't shoot all scenes with both lenses, will include the cine lens in a future video though!
I watch your videos since we both where kids hahaha And I LOVED this format of video
Cheers from Brasil
much appreciated!
“Will people judge me for my equipment?”
Fnarr, Fnarr!
Wake up Boys..Simon has uploaded a new video!!
I’ve been on the hunt for c mount lenses after buying a 16mm Bolex camera. Looking forward to using them!
Watch out! C mount cctv lenses don't seem to work the best on c mount video cameras after everything I've heard
there are some really good cheap zoom lenses, with impressively fast apertures
Oh 🙂↔️that's cute lens did you make it manually or bought it ?
want that so bad !!
Which/what lens is that I wonder? Seems like some cine/TV lens, but I don't know which.
Tbh I got this feeling -
yes they will. But they're wrong :D
Personally I preferred Shot A as well and that this is the tiny lens is mental :D
And I've even shot with similar mini Pentax lenses before - great video!
Funny you. On the other side, c-mount lenses were used for 16 and super 16mm cinema movies. So why not :D
0:55 i feel like the positive first impression which that gear might grant you is far less important in the long term.
I'd hope so! And I guess if it's really important to someone else, there's a good chance I wouldn't be a good fit for working with that person any way
00:27 This kid is a legend.
ive seen you from your early days of the channel till now when u decided to grow a beard . and the funny part about the internet is youll never know how many people you reach to.
Lens hood is an automatic professional😂
Heyy! You shoot for Ordinary Things? Thas cool
For your next experiment, you should wear an 80s jacket with massive shoulder-pads
Judgements will be washed away by the results
Big fan of you since 2015 or 2014…i dont remember exactly lol. 🎉
thanks for being here, it means a lot!
@@DSLRguide greetings from Mexico!
Mini lense gang, matte box gang.
Amazing it’s all about your skill not the equipment.
Which lens is this?
🌻🌻🌻🌻
Lol lol Im the same as you Simon I love my Canon SL2 24 mp camera. Lol
I remember the old videos I was in school when I started watching your videos so I think we're about the same age
I'm right on the edge of gen Z, a '97 kid, how close are we?
@DSLRguide I'm 99
close enough!
Keep up the good work mate
This may sound a bit cliché, but in the end it's true: in the hands of a true professional, any gear can generate great results.
one of my favourite overly cliche and sentimental quotes goes something like "many of the secrets to life are hidden behind the word cliche" haha
Low budget productions that expect you to bring your own camera likely aren’t judging, since they’re just happy to get a camera (which you should be charging for the use of, btw). Big budget productions that can afford to rent cinema camera also don’t care what camera you have, or if you even have one at all, since they’ll be renting the camera either way.
But there will be low budget productions that expect the DP to have their own camera who will specify they want the latest cheap RED or similar cinema looking camera.
I'd be really curious to do a similar experiment with clients / people who hire DPs. I've definitely heard of people insisting on Red / Arri or hiring the person with the best camera, but I'd like to put it to the test
Are both shots shot with the same f stop? First I thought it's not all that bad for such a tiny (and cheap) lens but then I saw how blurry the print on her top and the jacket are.
nope, the c-mount was probably f/1.8 or something (it opens to f/1.4) whereas the zoom was at T/2.9 I think
05:15 I'd love to know what this project was about!😂🤔
it'll be posted on ua-cam.com/users/ordinarythings fairly soon I reckon
@@DSLRguide I'll be on the lookout! :)
just went live!
@@DSLRguide About to watch it! :)
@@DSLRguide Nice! :)
You could've called the video: does size matter
I might change the title to "Does Lens Size Matter?"
what lens was that? is that the fujian?
Looks like it. I've got the risespray 25 and 35 and they have very similar characteristics but I prefer their profile. I use them on MFT cameras.
It just says 25mm TV lens on it haha, I can’t see any brand name
it's not the size that matters...
I think I watched your first video 8 years ago
so glad you’re still here, it’s been a ride haha
@@DSLRguide ... and I want to apologize: At the time when you stopped uploading regularly and then made another YT video like after a very long break I commented with something like 'Nobody cares anymore..' That was out of frustration.. Not sure what I was thinking!
But hey, regardless of how often you make YT videos: I do miss the apple :)
I forgive you, no big deal at all haha! At some points I've been a little bitter about very real possibility of having "peaked" in 2017 (depending on how you measure success of course), but I'm much less salty about it these days. No one owes me their attention, and I am grateful to any viewers, regardless of how many :)
As for the apple, keep an eye out, I might sneak it in somewhere
@@DSLRguide Perfect, waiting for the return of the apple ;) :) 🍏
I’ve been judged for my tiny lens before…😔
Damn 😂
Goes to show that its not about the size of your lens, but how you use it ;))))
that's what i've been telling myself haha
i like the character of the little lens better! ha. It's very creamy. Not as sharp and clinical
Thats not small... its average...😅
It's not tiny, more like average...😢
Your money is MINE.. take your soul with you i dont need it
I don't care what lens you use as long as it looks good and you don't show up with just an iPhone
that makes me want to do another test haha
