No, it does not. This is only people that had jobs that took Social Security before they took jobs with PENSIONS. You need to do your research. NO ONE THAT DID NOT PAY INTO SOCIAL SECURITY CAN GET IT.

COLA adjustments are based off the Q3 average inflation rate. (July + August + September divided by 3 = next years COLA adjustment. ) If there is 0% inflation then there is no COLA adjustment. COLA adjustments also apply to those getting VA disability benefits. Since 1960, the only two years with 0% inflation were 2009 and 2015. Inflation has always been a thing and always will be.
I'm on Social Security and not a police officer, firefighter or teacher. Why do they deserve to get more than I do? Grossly unfair. I have hardships too.
This isn't going to make a difference for the majority of Americans trying to survive on social security. People still won't be able to afford groceries.
I know many who could work but choosing disability. Then in 30 years, they will be apart of the old people needing more even tho they only been taking and not contributing their whole life.
Terrible explanation of the issue. People who paid into social security working outside of the public domain lose most of their social security benefits. Called windfall provision act.
They say it "only effects 2.8 millions people..." They are only counting seniors who are currently collecting! I'm 43 and policed for 18 years. WEP and GPO will totally effect me in the future. The numbers are far greater than 2.8 million. You have to count all these employees who are 18 and older and working in govt. jobs covered by pensions. It's many more millions!

So people with solid pensions will get more from social security. But what about the rest of us? We all need a raise, not only congress and civil servants. Let's be fair here.
Fair? I worked for both. I get 1/2 of my social security benefit. How is it fair? I'm not talking about thousands of dollars. I get 1/2 of less than 600 bucks a month! That was all (or mostly) the time I spent serving in the military!

My social security went up $17, the Medicare premium went up $22, so I lost, and draw less than $1000 a month, and congress votes to give themselves a 4% raise. That kind of stuff needs stopped. They do not need the raise, we, the people do.
Why can't the 84 year old woman that was a school principal use here social security from her own years of working?? That does not make sense very clear,.
The public workers did not have to pay into social security when they work, why the hell should they get paid social security when they retire? They have a pension system that they're drawing from.
double standard we already paid taxes and SS 30 years+ and when it’s time to get SS or a pension you still gotta pay taxes , don’t make sense , but God supplies my needs ❤
SS holdings are not taxed in your work check ...most SS recipients draw so little that we don't have to file a tax return. Pension withdrawals from your pay check are not taxed either ...if your pension is high enough ($25,000??) you will start to pay taxes at that level.
CBS did an extremely poor job in this story explaining the situation or even mentioning the provisions (WEP) they refer to. They are talking about people who spent part of their career in a private job and paid into social security and got their 40 credits to qualify for social security benefits. They also worked in a public job and earned a pension and the provision called WEP cuts their social security benefit by as much as 60% because they earned a public pension.

This is only for people who did pay into it by working other jobs. For example I know a teacher who first worked 15 years for a company ( non government) and paid into SS. She is currently not able to apply for SS because she became a teacher after that job. She should be able to apply because she DID pay into it.
If you don’t pay in to SSI because you were / are civil service you should know you need to get your 40 quarters somewhere else. Or you don’t get SSI money. You should have invested that savings into a 401 or 457.
Social Security is important for many seniors, but it’s also crucial to plan for retirement with smart investments. Diversifying your investments helps grow wealth over time. It’s never too early to start saving and investing for a secure future. I'm 63 and my husband is 65. We’re both retired with over $3 million in net worth and no debt. We live frugally and earn monthly passive income, which makes our early retirement possible.
Congrats on your early retirement! I’m looking for investment advice. Last year, I hesitated and missed the opportunity to invest, but this year, I’m determined to try something new and open to different ideas.
You're absolutely right. I tried investing on my own for a while, but the market just wasn't working in my favor. Eventually, I hired an advisor, even though I was hesitant at first. To my surprise, I ended up beating the market by more than 25%. At first, I thought it was just luck, but it happened again the following year. Since then, I've stuck with having an analyst handle my investments.
My step mom is a retired teacher. You wouldn’t believe the amount of money she has made through her pension. We are talking a huge lump sum of cash plus 10,000 a month pension! Yes some people need ss but there are many retired teachers who are very well off.

Anybody can get Social Security, even Billionaires. It has nothing to do with income and everything with how much you paid into it. What you pay into it is redistributed to those who are collecting it. Those working today are paying those who are collecting it.
OMG What a hardship. Worked for years and didn't pay into Social Security and now get the same as people who did pay into it their entire lives for EVERY penny they earned. What about the half that our employers paid into it? Is the government going to contribute that into the system or is this just another case of draining the taxpayers dry?
Why should teachers get extra,i know a teacher who retired at 55 and is collecting 2500 a month, and school is only 180 days a year, quit feeling sorry for them
There has been too much focus on passing this when the focus should be on guaranteeing annual increases to those who are 62 and older and receive either early retirement SS, regular SS, or disability social security that keeps pace with the national economy and inflation. Sorry SSI, but too many SSI recipients didn't "pay into the system" and don't have years of working.
This is tyhe real world!!! You do not get benifits for a program that you didn't pay into!!! I've paid into social security for 45 years, and have heard that millions of people are receiving benifits that they have not paid into!! This is pure BS!!!
Who is this reporter who did not take time to understand Social Security, benefits, and offsets? That 84-year-old woman who was a school principal is working two jobs? WHY? Her husband might have paid into the system but if her pension is larger than his retirement check was greater she is not entitled, which is fair because she didn’t pay into the system. That is not unfair and those people in her situation then and those retiring now in similar circumstances are told this at their retirement appointments. Now they want to play dumb like dumb KATY IN HER MISINFORMED REPORT. Many of these so called retired policeman, firefighters, teachers, retire at 55 with decent pensions while most AMERICANS paying into the system must wait until 62. You do the math.

Isn't determining how much a person receives from SSI because of their profession a form of discrimination ?? I always though how much you received was based on how much you had paid into the system !!
This report is missing a lot of details and has nothing to do with discrimination. In many places public servants have a very generous pension plan and the participants do not pay into the Social Security program. Very normal and common. I wish I knew what this story was really about.
@@yvonnepoole141wrong. This is for those that DID pay into social security in private sector jobs and at some time also had a job in the public sector. Inflation is a tax on the people. The taxes on the US people are way worse than taxes Pharaoh meted out back in the day. Also, the COLA is based on true stats. If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you on some Arizona oceanfront property!

COLA adjustments also apply to those getting VA disability benefits. Since 1960, the only two years with 0% inflation were 2009 and 2015. Inflation has always been a thing and always will be.
Let me get this straight. Teachers, fire fighters and police get a big raise while they already get a pension paid for by the taxpayer. The town I live in the cops retire at 55 get one hell of a pension and drive around in big new flashy vehicles and travel all over the country plus medical benefits and the same with teachers. Social security is giving them more!! I understand they paid into the system but for Christ sakes there’s people out here suffering and living on edge.
How does a Fireman receive 85 or 90% of his salary as a pension, same with a police officer is at a disadvantage for not getting their Social Security? So, If the Fireman gets 80% of a $90,000 salary, that would it be $7,200 a month and they are in a disadvantage compared to a regular person who receives $1,400 a Month from Social Security? Why do not remove the pension government employees receive and put everybody on Social Security only, like most of the population? Give me a break!
Whole lot of homeless people coming on that plan. How about giving every employee a pension plan without taking SS away. The billionaires have our pensions. They buy half billion dollar yachts with it. That's the real economic problem.
What cop and fireman is getting 80-90 %of his salary? NYPD pension is now 50% after 25 years. Most will be retired not long after that, not many will get more than 70%. The states that don't pay into social security like Louisiana are paying less and probably requiring at least 30 years service. You know even less about SS. Nobody retires on Social Security alone. Are you kidding? Social Security wouldn't even pay the rent.
@@josephshields2922 I am retired on SS ...$1600 per month. NYPD is 50% after 20 years AND at 20 years the salary is about $136,000!!! And now a cut and paste from the comptrollers site: The estimated total pay for a Retired Police Officer is $116,291 per year in the New York City at age 63. Seems you know less than you think you know.
All I can think of is, we truly got what we voted for all these years. Divided and conquered. This is where we are with the top 10% owning 81% of the USA wealth. No unions, the richest pay very little to no taxes, deregulations is continuing to happen, and companies pay zero taxes. We pay for the beach erosion on the beaches they live on, and rent is a mortgage payment. And...we keep voting these people in on both sides? Why? Lastly, if you think I want my SS account benefits handled by Wall Street...you're not understanding how's fooling who. The dog is easily fooled for his bone when looking into the water. We did it to ourselves and want to blame some one else.
It is sad when reporters have no or little knowledge of a subject and spread false, misleading, or partial information. This school principle she talks about, and other in the public sector have their own retirement plans. They cannot "double dip" and cross over to SS when a spouse dies. Is this wrong? The Congress will decide.
You're the uninformed one. They get their pension and their SS but it's reduced by the WEP program. Up to 60% of what they earned is not paid to them. Men earn more than women. When the man dies the woman cannot afford expenses as she loses most of his pension if not all, if a second wife. The surviving spouse is I believe entitled to continue the higher paying SS benefits but it's never enough.
Please do your research. The people they speak of do have all their quarters and did pay into social security while they worked. Other jobs beside their government jobs. Either before, after or during. They paid into it just like you but for some reason they are penalized and don't get near the money that everyone else gets because of their pension. That is the part that is not fair. It is not going to affect everybody else that are not teachers. Firefighters, police officers, etc.
It would be nice if the states would now do the same in turn. Private sector taxpayers should be getting something back from when they contributed to public employees' pensions. For example, public employees might pay 7 or 8% of their salary and taxpayers match it with interest (so their retirement is based on 14+% of their salary.) No one should really have to tell the states to do that.
There should NOT be a blanket policy because some paid into SS that at some point worked as Teaches ,Cops Or Fire fighters. Should be determined case by case, there are some who only paid into private pension and should have no right to draw SS they never paid into.
It IS for those people that ALSO paid into it! Then they got a job with the government! They paid in... they deserve to receive it the SAME as everyone else!
My SS benefit was cut by 50% because of WEP. I have missed on all colas on that I would have gotten. My loss is around $900 a month now. $10,800 a year is a healthy price to have taken away.
Don’t they get A pension? They always knew that they wouldn’t receive SS. Double dipping.. More research needs to be done. But if they get it add the veterans who fought and died for us. They deserve it.

2.5% cola. Medicare up. Net increase for my SS check is about $50. At least prescriptions are capped this year, and one of the expensive drugs is on the first negotiation list.
We got less than that! 2.7% is ridiculous and the fact that teachers already receive pensions, and healthcare and work for less time in a year is ridiculous! We joked about how we could perhaps buy a pizza with the minuscule amount we will receive! This makes me very sad to hear.

Not surprised, CBS, fake news!
But not everyone, is only to cover for the fact that Congress is giving their self a raise.
40 % raise for them 2.5 % for us
They say it "only effects 2.8 millions people..." They are only counting seniors who are currently collecting! I'm 43 and policed for 18 years. WEP and GPO will totally effect me in the future. Fair? I worked for both. I get 1/2 of my social security benefit. How is it fair? I'm not talking about thousands of dollars. I get 1/2 of less than 600 bucks a month! That was all (or mostly) the time I spent serving in the military!

Those people don't pay into the SS system. They have their own pension plans and now want money from SS too that they did not contribute to.

All I can think of is, we truly got what we voted for all these years. Divided and conquered. This is where we are with the top 10% owning 81% of the USA wealth. No unions, the richest pay very little to no taxes, deregulations is continuing to happen, and companies pay zero taxes.
What about our military service members.
