- To celebrate turkey day (Thanksgiving), we made a reptile-safe pumpkin pie for our reptiles. They absolutely LOVED it! Even though some just preferred the whipped cream :P

I don't know who I enjoyed more. The blue tongue skink who was a fiend at the beginning, Ham Samich eating off the fork like a princess, or Aly devouring her slice! This has to be an annual Thanksgiving tradition.

Yeah, like maybe next year you could just use cricket flour for the crust and just have it raw or only baked a little so that it doesn't just collapse.
Tips: You could make bars next time, which reduces the amount of crust. Adding egg in the bar will also help bind and thicken it as you went from cream to water. If you want to reduce flour further you could try a nut flour for your omnomnomivores.
edit: and as others have said, all canned pumpkin I've seen is already sugar free. If making from scratch there are other varieties of squash marked as 'pie pumpkins'but are other types of squash. Pumpkin often has too much moisture for pies while these other squash don't.
Most canned pumpkin is often just other squash with a bit of coloring and a dash of actual pumpkin. Also next time for cooking pumpkin/squash: cut side down will help it steam itself and cut down on cooking time
There's "canned pumpkin", which is just pureed squash (sometimes including real pumpkin, often not), and then there's "canned pumpkin pie filling", which has all the spices, sugar, eggs, etc.
I wonder, if you would need even less flour, if you used an egg in a crust. It also binds the crust together. Also you could add egg on the filling, leave out the crust and make kind of crustless pumpking pie. (Quiches often use eggs in the filling).
I remember my mom would usually use butternut squash to make pumpkin pie from scratch.

For future reference, as long as you don’t get pumpkin pie filling in a can, the canned pumpkin most recipes call for is literally just puréed squash. Then you don’t have to worry about cleaning and baking the pumpkin just so you can have a purée
Coming here to post that..Pumpkin PIE filling has all that sugar, ginger, nutmeg , etc but tou can buy pumpkin just plain pumpkin puree in a can. The labels for both are nearly identical.
Was gonna say this. One of my kitties has an enlarged vertebra near her tail. This causes some weakness in her back legs, so she's never been much of a jumper, and it also makes her more prone to constipation. As she's gotten older, it's been harder for her to pass it on her own, so I've been supplementing pumpkin and a small amount of Miralax (vet's orders) into her wet food with some water. Canned pumpkin is okay so long as it's 100% pumpkin. You can double check on the ingredient list and the nutritional info to make sure it's the only thing in there and has no added sugar.
Yeah, the canned pumpkin I've always seen is just pumpkin. Don't think I've ever seen canned pumpkin with added sugar.
Yep and it’s perfectly safe for most animals. I have a kitty who’s prone to splatter poops (yes I’ve taken her to the vet) and I use it to help her (okayed per her vet).
My ex’s dog had stomach problems, and the vet recommended giving her white rice with chicken and pumpkin purée for a few days to help. It worked pretty well, and I’ve even given it to my elderly cat when he’s gotten constipated. Just gotta be careful, the purée and pie filling labels look really similar!

Canned pumpkin is just straight pumpkin unless you buy "pie filling" which adds spices (for future reference! )
Yes, actually the picture of the can they flashed on the screen was the 100% pumpkin, NOT the pie filling with sugar and spices. As per our vet’s recommendation, we add it to our dogs’ food. They love it!

I was going to say! At work, we also recommend canned pumpkin for dogs to add fiber without adding calories to help them lose weight or harden up their stools a little if they have anal gland issues. I always make sure to tell them to check it’s 100% canned pumpkin and not the pumpkin pie filling haha

The vet told us that if we gave them both pumpkin with their food, she would stop. Seemed to work, and they both loved it!

Fun fact. Nearly every pumpkin pie/canned pumpkin pie filling is actually Cushaw squash. They use pumpkin when they run out of the squash.😁

Where I live I was pretty sure it is Cucurbita moschata, a common cultivar of which is Butternut squash, not Cucurbita argyrosperma, Cushaw squash, that is used as a substitute for pumpkin n pie mix. Though there is a cultivar of C. moschata that is called Golden Cushaw, so I can see where confusion happens.
Soooo, my mom makes Cushaw Squash cookies and bread?
Well I understand why they call it pumpkin pie. Cushaw squash pie doesn't really run off the tongue. But I guarantee you, it would run off the Tegu's tongue. :-)
Most of it is made in Morton, IL, not far from where I live, and every fall, it smells terrible. And, it is actually pumpkins. The fields are filled with them

I've fed my skink's cooked natural pumpkin myself on multiple occasions. As you say their adapted pumpkin pie is eh ok with me too. Just not the speech marked.

Ham Sammich is adorable and you're right she would be a great ambassador for proper reptile care. She also seems to have an excellent temperament. I vote keep her. I'd love to see her in future videos.

The way the lizards ate those pies was too cute for words. xD And Rex is so relatable. We've all been there, we take a bite of pastry that's just a little too dry so we dive mouth open, face-first into the nearest body of water to wash it down.
who else has been here since ed was never on camera? it's crazy that we've gone this far! emily and ed, your videos have made me so much happier throughout the years, and i think it's so cool that you guys are educational, but are also funny and have great personalities! i hope you guys can make more awesome content, and maybe another holiday special for christmas!
I cannot believe Aly managed to eat that so well. Overall, I think the Bugkin pie was a big success, minus Rex. I hope we get to see Rex eat more because it's funny. She's got such a great personality. Maybe she needs a place outside her enclosure for holiday meals.

I have been a sub since the beginning and seeing the drastic change in Rex literally made me gasp. Her jaw is so much straighter than even last year, it's amazing! The zoo has done wonders for her. Great video as always. Happy Thanksgiving to the whole crew and critter fam ❣️

So nice to meet Ham Samich! I’m glad she wasn’t euthanized. I know it’s a very real possibility in rescue and rehabilitation- I’ve rehabbed hedgehogs, and there’s always that X Factor- that indescribable will to live that can mean the difference between quality of life and time to say goodbye.

Honestly, a cooking show for reptile-safe meals and desserts is just something I need now. Like to live. 💝
Just for future reference what you were thinking of is Pumpkin Pie Mix which has all the extra stuff added. They also have just plain pumpkin puree with nothing added, so thats an option if dont want to cook a whole pumpkin next year.
I know we’ll probably only ever see that kitchen in the new house but it’s a VERY pretty kitchen and I can’t ignore it even tho it’s irrelevant to the video 😂
EVERYTIME Snake Discovery turn into a cooking show (from the good ol' cricket tacos, to the most recent Rex cake) it manages to be be equaly a DISASTER and a MASTERPIECE! And we are blessed eatch time! XD thank you so mutch, Ed and Emily, to be the wonderfull wierdos you are!!! (And for making other wierdos like us feel less wierd for cooking for our tiny dinosaurs!!)

I really appreciate the all from scratch concept, but you can buy cans of just pumpkin puree at the store... like without any of the additional ingredients.

You can definitely do crustless pumpkin pie! There are recipes for it on the internet. Also the "whipped cream" is just a meringue and can be baked for a short time to make it safe for people to eat too 😁Happy Thanksgiving!
might also make it easier for selling it in the shop if they include the "whipped cream" so it can last a little longer and hold its shape more

The you for reminding me to cook up my pumpkins for my cats! They love it and it’s good for their tummy. Saying that I already spoilt them with tinned fish or meat every day with their biscuits. Oh well! Thankyou for being one of the best reptiles channels on UA-cam! Others are like ‘oh shut mr shouty’ and ‘would you pull your mum around like that’.

This was SO CUTE!!! Definitely needs to be an annual tradition and maybe you can modify the recipe to be a “protein bar” for your omnomivores who have MBD since its so loaded with calcium. Ham Sandwich sure seemed to enjoy it. I think my favorite eater though was the piglet skink. Although, Ali was funny too… and Dumbledore the rescued beardie sure enjoyed himself too. Also, I imagine Sheila is going to expect whipped topping on ALL her meals now LoL
As an Australian, it was great to see the blues and beardies enjoying Thanksgiving.
