Chaka's smelly ear update- Our vet said it wasn't anything to worry about currently, but if we notice any swelling from under the skin where the ear is located, then we'd have to worry. Sorry I forgot to mention that part on video!
That being said, it actually doesn’t smell as bad as it did when we filmed this video. Hopefully she'll grow out of it!
Hi! Hope Chaka’s ear stays healthy!
It's ok
I think her ear thing might be congenital
Chaka’s strange ear reminds me of my own ear problem. My right inner ear did not develop properly so water would not drain from it, meaning getting any moisture inside my ear meant a guaranteed painful ear infection. Just a suggestion to keep water away from that ear!
Meloxicam is used in cats and dogs for the same reason as reptiles and birds too. ❤
Cheyenne is a physical embodiment of chaos, whilst Chaka is yet to develop a single thought between those eyes. The absolute perfect duo 😆
So... you're telling me they are Pinky and the Brain? xD
Yes but I’m the embodiment of energy 🫨🫨🫨🫨🫨🫨🫨🫨🫨🫨🫨🫨
@@Mewwolfprobably why she wanted to be in chaka’s cage so they could plan the take over in the world
Everytime I see Cheyenne and Chaks, I instantly think of Pinky and The Brain LOL
Ah, couldn't say "between those ears", because well...
"Are you a defective bird?!" Is such a dad thing to say😂
I have a gene defect and my dad wanted to claim warranty 😂😂😂
My youngest (living) sister was born with a heart murmur, a click hip, and the biggest hernia the doctor had ever seen on a patient that small.
My dad says she came "some assembly required."
@@brigidtheirish😂
Is it bad I kind of want to take a screenshot of this for my dad!? 😅
I mean, if it's a genetic defect, there's a chance that he gave it to you, so maybe you could do an exchange or return
After I complained about a chronic issue my dad said "Complain to your mother. She is the one who put you together"😂 to which my mum said "well, I can only do so much with what I got" 😂
It’s something I’d say might be worth letting the breeder know that way they can keep an eye out on future babies
@shelbybaby1642 if it's as common as they said, most keepers likely don't have an issue with it. As long as they can still hear, it isn't really considered a defect. Kind of like if your cat has extra toes
@@kittybun8845it can cause more issues than polydactyl cat toes. It’s not even comparable.
@ true, I made this comment before it came to the part of the video where they said that. Though I’d still let the breeders know so maybe they’d make new owners aware so they don’t have a slight panic when they realize their bird has odd ears or no ear hole at all
Though extra toes and a missing ear no matter how common is still definitely defined at a defect, that doesn’t make it a bad thing. And any kitten from a reputable breaded probably wouldn’t have extra toes and if they did it would be disclosed and pretty obvious.
@@shelbybaby1642 no it’s 100% something they should have disclosed. They didn’t want to because it would affect her resale value. They intentionally kept it from them hoping it would never come up or be an issue.
Some macaws can live past 80, and this poor girl has arthritis in her 20s. I feel that
I live with arthritis too in my twenty's, so twins lmao.
I think Cheyenne getting arthritis early is because she was neglected in her previous home
I feel it too. I first developed osteoarthritis at age 14 (or at least, it was diagnosed then). I’m happy when any long lived creature gets more good years than I did. I feel for her though. Especially on rainy days.
Much like humans (arthritis in my 20s big ouch)
@Chaotic_Pixie I don't have arthritis, but I developed carpel tunnel at 16 and it's gotten a lot worse since
Ah, leave it to snake discovery to have a bird with a snake ear. All the working parts covered in skin 😂
Bwahaha!
It is so cute that Cheyenne wanted to sleep in Chaka's cage
Vincent
i second this! Chaka Van Gogh Roberts has a nice ring to it!
I thought the joke was "let's van gogh!" the realization the he only had one ear hit me like a freight train
Is THAT why!? I was so confused but now that you say that OF COURSE that's why he was the scene swipe.
He didn't have only 1 ear, he cut off one ear.
@@05Nataku yup and sent it to a lady that he loved
@ Yet she did not appreciate the gesture...I wonder why.
@@jnewcomb I mean he was well known as a creep to most women around him so... yeah, shocker.
Veterinary technician here, I focus mainly on purpose bred mice but I've worked with a wide variety of animals and ran a skeleton lab where we studied evolution, growth, and deformities in vertebrate organisms. One thing that I've seen in mice a lot and a few aves is the lack of an external ear, or pinna. Birds already lack the pinna (which is the visible part of the ear) but I've seen mice where the canal does not form either, creating a flap of skin over the drum. It happens more often than you think and doesn't cause problems in cases where the skull is developed correctly. The x-ray looks good so she should still hear just fine and there shouldn't be any problems there. One additional thing to monitor for (besides swelling) would be scratching in case that skin is punctured. It would heal but contaminants can get in and cause future problems. Also keep an eye on her other ear with the small opening and make sure the passage stays clear. Either way she looks great and appears to be a very healthy bird! Love your videos and always look forward to seeing your content!
I legit panicked because on the recommended it only said "Our Macaw is missing" lol
So Intresting that Chaka doesn't have an ear!
Same! I had a mini heart attack.
I am so glad it wasn't just me😅
There’s a show/book series called All Creatures Great and Small. It’s inspired by the life of James Harriet who practiced veterinarian medicine in rural England during the early-mid 1900s
Anyways, in one episode of the original TV show, they discover a piglet who was born without a rear end opening 😳 I don’t remember how the episode turned out, unfortunately. I’d assume either surgical intervention or euthanasia
I’m glad Chaka’s genetic glitch is much less critical to her wellbeing. DNA and the way our bodies build themselves is fascinating
Same!!!!
@@ohrats731 If you're interested in James Herriot, look up a series called The Yorkshire Vet! It's on Channel 5 here in the UK. It's hosted by two vets who work at the practice that he worked at (and one of them was trained by James, too!)
Maybe that’s why she is so loud. She has trouble hearing how loud she is.
that does sound logical enough to me. i know species is different, but we think the same of my step-dad but he thinks he's fine. He just gets really loud really fast but he's also worked in factories most of his life too and even with ear plugs, they can still damage the ears.
Nah this is very very normal for baby macaws. they're just like That
Macaws are just loud by nature
@@mrvwbug4423 Even I can tell that's the case and I don't know much about macaws! (I've considered getting a parakeet, but they're kinda loud too)
@@greenapple9477 Can agree with this. My tiel can screech just as loud, lol.
12:50 LOL I’m on the same meds as Cheyenne! (I’m also in my 20s with arthritis!) edit: some unsolicited meloxicam advice from a human, it took me a few months to build up the meds in my system to really notice a difference, and heat works wonders to help the inflammation. Also, cold, stormy, rainy/ snowy or cloudy days make everything a lil slower n stiffer… I think it’s the barometric pressure but some heat helps loosen things up (my rabbit is also arthritic so on these days we snuggle with the heated throw!)
This is me too. It too me several months to have Meloxicam to start working too. I can only say ditto to everything you just said about weather and pain.
Heyyy, fellow chronic pain haver! I can definitely second the heat suggestion. I'm super-happy with my decision to get an electric blanket for my feet under my computer desk! That's so sweet that your rabbit and you are arthritis buddies! Solidarity! Reminds me of a tumblr post about a blind person having a blind cat, and the cat has better hearing, so she chirps when she hears the person coming to warn them she is there!! Just melts my heart
I am also on Meloxicam for fibromyalgia. I live under heating pads and just got a heated mattress pad for Christmas.
I'm also on Meloxicam and would like to add that not only can it take some time to build up and feel like it's doing anything like the original poster has said but as someone with severe chronic pain while it often doesn't seem like it's doing anything because I'm still hurting so badly I can definitely tell how much of an effect it's been having if I miss a dose for some reason. I go from severe pain but some functioning to barely being able to move certain joints. So when Emily said it didn't seem to be doing anything for Cheyenne, while that may be the case, it also may be doing more than it seems.
Also on it. It helps so much with my hip. I’m 30 but decided to fight a minivan while crossing a street back in college (this ended in a draw). It does have a sweet taste to it, almost like super bland banana lifesavers. I find it’s super effective for me but I think it’s one you can’t be on long term?
That is WILD! Something I never even thought to check for in a pet is a missing ear hole!
I have chicken's and i check ears feet under the wings crops almost daily. Ear infections in bird can be dreadful
make sure your pets have ALL of the proper holes.
the bad smell is what worries me. I wonder why they didn't address that with the vet
@@Definitely_Elle They probably did, just not on camera.
we’re too used to snakes since they got no earholes anyway :P
I work at an exotics vet! Meloxicam is an NSAID we prescribe all. The. Time. And we usually flavor the meds for birds, that's probably why she ate it so happily!
What flavor? Are there multiple options like there are for hoomans?
another thing to note about Meloxicam- you shouldn’t take any other NSAIDs while on it!
@@phaedrapage4217usually honey flavored but I’m pretty sure a compounding pharmacy could do another flavor
My cats doesn't like any meds but this one, i almost have to fight them back when 1 of them need to take that medication, they are acting crazy as soon as they see the bottle.. 😂❤
No fair, my meloxicam just comes in a stupid pill 😢 I want honey flavored
1:21 Is the testament to how well you treat your birds. Most birds, if they don't trust you implicitly, will NOT, under any circumstance, let you roll them onto their back. Great job!
Cheyenne taking her medicine was so cute.😆
If only all pets took their medication that easily.
My late dog liked eating so much she would run at us if he heard the sound of a blister pack. Lol. Easiest dog to medicate ever
cough cough cats cough
@@samalight7249 Oh yeah, I have an arthritic 15 year old cat who is very creative at not swallowing pills and hocking them back up haha.
My previous dog would remind me when it was time for her daily meds XD none of my current pets will except meds without a fight tho
My previous dog was so anti medication that he would spit up pills. I ended up having to powder it and smear it across his mouth since he struggled too much for me to feel safe putting a syringe down his throat.
Okay but the fact that Cheyenne insisted on sleeping in Chaka’s cage is adorable. Sleepover!
The pasties comment killed me. Also I take meloxicam sometimes for a chronic pain disorder. It is pretty magical...
I wish it helped me. My dad loves it for his arthritis, but of course I have to be complicated. 🙄😬
Chaka's "missing" ear just gives her a bond with snakes since they don't have external ears!🤣I sympathize with Cheyenne on the arthritis front.
It is ADORABLE that chaka flew to you when you said her name.
Meloxicam is an anti-inflammatory used in lots of animals :) kitty cats, doggies, guinea pigs, rabbits etc.! The oral solution is meant to be palatable, kinda like how kid's painkillers are often strawberry flavoured!
Yes! My cat has gotten prescribed it several times before! She did not like it nearly as much as Cheyenne (or Emily) though.
I got prescribed some myself 😂
It’s also a human medication. Though for non-human animals the dose is much smaller.
Yup we had a patient with a not so nice rabbit and they were so worried with giving the meds. But the rabbit Loved it and eventually learned his people weren't so bad because of it.
Also used in humans! I take it every night for the arthritis in my hands. The brand name for humans is Mobic.
A red-tailed hawk that I worked with during my last seasonal position had a very similar issue with her ears! The holes were mostly covered by a flap of skin and with just a little pinhole in the flap of skin. I got to see her ears during one of her bi-annual check-ups and it was WILD to see just the little pinhole ear. I have a picture of it. She was struck by a car as a juvenile bird and while the fracture healed perfectly in one of her wings, the primary feathers on the other wing were damaged and never grew back, permanently affecting her ability to fly. She can do about 30ish feet, mostly launching herself the distance with her powerful thighs.
Meloxicam is my favorite. My rabbit LOVES it and he certainly gets a lot of it because we love a medically complex bunny with chronic stasis issues.
13:52 lost it at you licking the bird meds, It reminded me of the times my dad would use our cats eyedrops lol. If it works it works.
Humans can and will eat dang near *anything.*
It's not "if it works it works". Using meds meant for animals can have more harmful side effects or even cause permanent damage or even death if used excessively. Some pet meds can be fine, but it's not something worth gambling a life over.
In full fairness to Emily, Meloxicam is a NSAID that is commonly prescribed to humans and dogs, as well as birds. It isn't that much different from ibuprofen, actually.
Meloxicam is an NSAID, its used in humans plenty too. Basically Super Ibuprofen/Naloxone. Glad the birds are ok! :)
For a while, both I and my Quaker were on meloxicam. Unfortunately my Quaker _hated_ the taste of it, all the assurances that she and I took the same medicine notwithstanding.
Aww how cute a sleep over 2:15 i do love a bird video occasionally
Cheyenne: Don't worry, Chaka! I'll protect you while you sleep!
My worry would have been about the smelliness coming from the defective side. What did your vet say about it? Ear infections can become so serious.
That's what concerned me too.
im guessing they mentioned it off camera with how on top of thing emily is my best guess would be that its a normal smell from not getting as much air as the other ear but since theres zero redness or tenderness that should mean its not infected though im sure they will keep an eye or nose out for changes thats what i would do!!
Our vet said it wasn't anything to worry about currently, but if we notice any swelling from under the skin where the ear is located, then we'd have to worry. Sorry I forgot to mention that part on video!
17:39 Wow! Such green eyes... Ed you probably don't hear enough how lovely you are to look at, let alone be allowed to know how much you can relate to those who are so overwhelmed by the world. Thank you both for your vids - I always look forward to seeing you both be such a lovely pair of lovely people. Happy year of the snake!!
He is such a gentle soul with such a happy go lucky personality. And he’s handy as heck. He’s a keeper Emily! But she already knew that.
If anyone is wondering about the Minnesotan/strong Midwestern accent, a strong example is when the vet says “bones” at 9:31. It’s also very present when Emily says things like “tag” or “bag.”
That's the kind of thing I'd have thought the breeder would mention. Never seen this. Love the big sis sleepover
Hey I’m on meloxicam also. 48 here. Hey Cheyenne us old birds need to stick together lol 😁
Chaka is still such a baby, omg 😭 What an absolute sweetheart. And Cheyenne wanting to sleep in her cage...it's great to see that they're getting on! I hope Chaka's ear stays alright.
Meloxicam is given to humans for Osteoarthritis and other conditions too. I’ve had it before when I pinched my sciatic nerve and my body went into swollen overdrive. It was the ONLY thing that helped. It really is a miracle drug. It’s now my reserve med for when I pinch nerves which I’m oh so prone to do because OA and hypermobility.
So sorry that you have joined the club Cheyanne. Happy your little body lasted longer than mine before the first arthritis hit. Enjoy your good meds sweet girl. I’m sure you’ll be enjoying life so much more now.
Obviously talk to your vet, but when I’ve been on it, it def took a little bit for it to really kick in. Otherwise warmth always makes my arthritis feel better. That and consistently using the joint, even for non-weight bearing tasks. Would a bird like Cheyanne cuddle up to something like a CuddleSafe wrapped in a towel? And can birds have joint supplements? That’s something I’d also ask the vet about. Lubricating those joints really does help. For me and my cats, that looks like a lot of fish oil and glucosamine supplements… but I have to imagine there’s an option for large birds.
The “seizure phase” is known as emergence delirium or dysphoria! No actual seizures occur it’s only confusion and trying to regain consciousness, showing as flailing and vocalizing. Some drugs are more likely to cause this than others but it can happen to any animal
This is me after a big sleep.
Chaka has one bird ear and one snake ear! (One with the skin going over the ear like a snake.) How fitting for the channel!
Pharmacy Tech here, yes, don't lick your bird's meds, 😂, but Meloxicam is a human medication as well, so Emily will be a-ok. But on the MedSci Nerdy front (probably a question for the Vet), Do NSAIDs (Meloxicam's Med Family) irritate other species stomachs like it can ours without stomach protectants (food, PPIs (Nexium and the like), etc)?
Can’t speak for exotics but in dogs and cats Meloxicam and other NSAIDs can cause gastric ulcers but I don’t often pair it with any other meds like a PPI but we do recommend they be given with food. Harmful side effects like ulcers are more commonly seen with chronic use or higher dosages. We can see just general GI upset like with any medication.
hey im also a pharm tech! i started this job kinda recently so im always like :O when i see a med i recognize lol
I sometimes forget just how dangerous macaws are because of how fantastically you guys do with yours haha
I just have to say, I have been watching you guys for years since Rex was in her room with her roommate. You guys are the reason why I am no longer scared of snakes.. I fell in love with Hognose snakes!
I have to 😊
Same ❤
My daughter and I watch your show like clockwork and we always look to forward to the "useless trivia" at the end. We are disappointed that there wasn't one today.
Chaka always having to sit in a car seat like an unruly toddler never fails to make me laugh
I haven't even really started the video yet but honestly a round of applause for the editor for including van gogh in the beginning. I said, "Oh my God!" twice. Whoever put that there, I love you ❤️
So interesting! Did they ever address why her missing ear was stinky?
@@patrickhsiao08 it's probably just less ventilated, so her brain farts get trapped inside
I was just gonna ask
Yea I was curious too, only about halfway through now but they are talking and I don't see her bringing it up at all so I wonder if it slipped her mind. Especially when the vet mentioned things backing up potentially, that seemed like the best time to bring up the weird smell.
I assume wax builds up since it has nowhere to escape and that's what smells? I'm not a vet so it's just my guess.
yeah, that really worries me, since infections smell bad
I love how every time Chaka's ears are being checked she just thinks she's being petted and gets really happy
I can't with how she did the eye pinning thing for the pain meds, so adorable!!! Our cat Oberon recently started having to take meds 2x a day because he was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. He has severe anxiety when it comes to medication, so I expected trouble. Wouldn't take pill pockets, ran from them like poison. Turns out if you squish the pill between a layer of pill pocket and a regular hard treat then wait even 5 minutes for the pill pocket to start to dry out, he LOVES it. Pets are weird LOL
This is so fascinating. It never occurred to me that macaws could be missing an ear. It’s good to know that it’s not affecting her to much. However it’s interesting how this is a common deformation in large birds. Also poor Cheyenne. I hope that you guys find the best painkillers for her.
I gave my rabbits meloxicam when they got neutered and when one broke his toe. I don't know what they put in it, but they love that stuff. It's like candy, they get excited when you whip out the syringe.
13:46 - I laughed SO HARD at the two different fonts for these statements - Goosebumps title font lol
Also the dramatic "bummmm" sound, to really accentuate the moment!
I really love the episodes focused on the macaws! They're so fascinating and beautiful!!❤
I was just thinking a Chaka update would be nice, and here it is! Hope her ear situation doesn't become an issue latter on. And poor Cheyenne! Arthritis is the pits!
sleeping in the same cage, oh my gosh, so cute, my heart
Love how Chaka heard her name and was like "I'M COMING MOM! I HEARD MY NAME I'M COMING!"
AAAAW!!! I cannot with these two!!! Cheyenne even insisted on sleeping with Chaka!!! AAAAAAW!!!
My birb mama heart cant!!!
The good news is that Chaka’s still ready and able to self-advocate! I hope you find a treatment that helps with Cheyenne’s arthritis. And thanks for sharing the radiographs with us. I love lookin at X-ray films for some reason. I always have. ❤
Because they're cool
Don’t worry Cheyenne. I have arthritis too. We will get through this together. Movement helps with pain so you will be moving and loved plus medicine. We got this!!! ❤
I'm not an expert by any means but I would suggest doing a small hearing test with Chaka some how. I bet she has a hearing impairment of some sort (either by her not being able to hear things below or above a certian volume level or maybe she can't hear certian pitches/tones). If you've had a stuborn time trying to train her it could be due to a hearing impairment making the commands muffled and not understandable to her 🤷♀️
I love watching your videos and learning about the different animals through you ❤
@amandat8720 I don't think she does have a hearing impairment. Towards the end of the video, you see her fly to Emily from across the house because she heard her name. Additionally, snakes have skin completely covering their ears, and they can still hear without issues.
@kittybun8845 I thought snakes heard through vibrations and not actual sounds 🤔🤷♀️
She isn't hard of hearing her ears and balance is connected so if she had balance issues they might order one but in her case nah,
@amandat8720 they can do both. There's an older Snake Discovery video on it, though I haven't watched that myself. I just remember reading a couple articles. They're sensitive to vibrations, but they're still able to hear because they have a fully formed inner ear within their skull. In fact, the reason why Spider ball pythons have neurological issues is because their inner ear is deformed and puts pressure on their brain
She flew over from the other room at mention of her name, her hearing seems to be ok
Is anyone else curious as to if the breeder should have noticed the lack of ear? I don’t mean to disparage them and obviously it can be easily missed but I feel like they might’ve checked.
I agree. If they are selling “defective” birds they should’ve bothered to check or at least inform new buyers
especially as baby birds are not fledged - so it should have been clear if there was a difference between her and other baby macaws of that species
@ChristineSG19 they mentioned it's a common issue with large birds, so it's possible that more experienced keepers don't see it as an issue. Kind of like a cat with extra toes, it really doesn't change much
@@kittybun8845true but I feel like it should still be something to be disclosed to potential buyers.
@@kittybun8845 a cat with extra toes is still an issue to be noted.
I love that this vet is so up for participating in the video and giving us all some interesting information that’s quite well presented!
This is also a reminder that Emily has her sense of smell!! The surgery is still a success 😁
I had forgotten about that! What a weird parasocial moment, to know that one’s UA-cam friend once couldn’t smell things, had a procedure to help with the problem, and now in the future can smell her new parrot’s stinky head!
Chaka and Cheyenne make the perfect duo! Cheyenne being the chaos queen of all destruction and Chaka being just a sweetheart and a playful little bean! They really are just an adorable duo! ❤❤
What a KILLER LEATHER JACKET Emily! I love the winter look.
I’ve had a crazy idea, idk how much this would cost but it would be really cool if you took part of the greenhouse and converted it into a bird aviary! And it could be apart of the zoo!
Since the ear structure isn't really missing, just covered by skin, isn't Chaka the most fitting macaw for Snake discovery since she has a snake ear?
Human family doc here - Meloxicam is often used in people medicine (as mentioned in a few comments already) and is a long-acting NSAID kind of like ibuprofen. I volunteer at a bunny rescue and we use it for them too! Side note- as someone who is not well-versed in reading bird radiographs, I was proud of myself for spotting the arthritis before the vet pointed it out! And also I can’t get over HOW small Chaka’s brain is compared to her skull.
I don't know the time period but as a person taking meloxicam sometimes it can take a minute to reach a new "normal"! There are other medications that I use with it but highly recommend using turmeric as well as other anti inflammatory foods that macaws can have as well. Not a cure all but definitely will give a bit of a boost!
Love seeing how much Chaka loves being pet and how the girls get along so well. Chayenne sleeping in Chaka's cage is sweet
Chaka just being a normal baby with staring at her feet at the end is so cute.
Thank you for showing off their imaging. I have never seen a bird radiograph before, and their eyes are much bigger than I expected!
meloxicam also works for dogs, sheep's, humans. Mind you it can take a little time before you see the results. As my doctor explained it can take years of irritation before joins get inflamed, don´t expect medication to work in one or two weeks. I had to take it for 6 months and than it started to work really good!
I love to see vets allowing them to be filmed while doing the exams. ❤
If you are a Minnesotan looking for a compounding pharmacy who prepares veterinary prescriptions, go to Bloomington Drug in Bloomington, MN (on Old Shakopee Rd). They do great work, relatively affordable, and can even mail prescriptions. My cat was diagnosed with asthma & didn't respond to an inhaler so he takes a very low dose of liquid prednisolone that they flavor with fish. My guy loves the taste so much he tries to eat the syringe!
There are many online compounding pharmacies for pets that can send the script within 24-48 hours. I've used one called wedgewood many times, they are great, can make many forms of edible compounded meds, like actual cat/dog treats, for instance.
I'm glad you don't have to do anything surgically to Chaka. I hope Cheyenne's arthritis gets under control and she continues to be a happy girl. They are both adorable! Thank you for sharing them with us.
I'm a nurse: Meloxicam is a prescription NSAID for humans too!! Chaka is so lovely 🥰
“ Don’t ask me how I figure this out” * smells birds ear* (how do you know what normal bird ear smell is ?🤔)😂😂🤣 . Also, are you a defective bird was hilarious. 3:03
My lil sister was born with only one really big kidney. She didn't find out til she was an adult. Weird birth defects happen.
I was born with malrotated intestines! Didn’t find out until I was 16 (I’m 25 now), but I went to the ER with stomach pains and they did some scans on me and that’s how we found out, they said you couldn’t even see one of my intestines where it should be, but it’s been so long that I can’t remember which one it was.
I’ve been fine so far, so im going as long as I can without surgery to correct it 🤣
It's more of an oddity than anything, but I am assuming the big kidney works normally
How did she find out? :o
@@SleepyRoyalty while I’m not the original commenter, I do have a few explanations that are likely:
She went for an unrelated test that’d show her organs, and found out
She had some sort of abdominal pains, whether related or not, and found out
Aww poor baby Chaka,
Hope she feels better soon.
I'm so cute how she talks so much, aww chatty little baby.🎉🎉
Not surprised Cheyenne liked the meloxicam, the liquid version is usually flavoured like honey
I'm so glad to see the birds settling in together. Chaka seems super happy!
Some of our owls take meloxicam for arthritis too! It's just an old lady thing :) Theirs is hidden in their food, though.
Not em licking the bird medicine 😂😂😂😂😂
I love watching you guys you always make my day i am currently studying herpetology(tuataras specifically)because of you guys.❤
Cheyenne insisting to sleep in Chaka's cage made my heart so full. So precious!
This sort of thing can happen to people too. It’s called Atresia of the Ear Canal. In that case the ear will look normal on the outside but the hole through the bone is missing. This is when a person could get a Cochlear Implant. It’s a hearing aid that transfer sound through the skull. I know about this because someone in my family has this condition.
I adore everything about your videos and look forward to them every Tuesday and Friday! My favorite part (aside from the animals) is the fun random fact at the end of the video. The absence of your bi-weekly fact was noticed and sorely missed! The van Gogh cameo was cute though, and I’m glad the bird babies are doing well!
Chaka going through molt.....Chaka is learning feather dance! :D
Chaka is like 'I got two people preening me' while she's at the vet. XD That's a good first experience.
I love how Cheyenne was absolutely game to try the pain medicine.
Emily try a foot soak in warm water with lots of Epsom salts for 10 or 15 minutes. Walmart has those Rubbermaid "sinks" for camping that make great bathtubs for a couple of dollars. I will say that I have recently acquired the same diagnosis in my toe and I feel so BAD FOR Cheyenne because it is FREAKING PAINFUL!! 😬🥵🤯🥺😢 I'm not kidding, it is sudden hot poker stabbing pains and it feels good with warmth and massage.
I hope you find something that helps. ❤❤❤
Weird comment, but meloxicam is actually used for people too! It's generic name is Mobic and is used to treat inflammation in the body (it's like a stronger ibuprofen). I take it for joint pain caused by lupus, so it makes sense that Cheyenne was put on something similar.
Feel better Cheyenne!!
I'm glad Cheyenne approved of her medication. That pinning was adorable. And I'm glad Chaka's ear isn't too serious.
I wish giving medication to my dachshunds had been that easy. Shadow would take his pills in any piece of meat. Comet, however, would eat the meat and spit out the pill. We had to buy special treats to mold around the pills so he couldn't spit them out.
Cheyenne's reaction to her meds was SO adorable lol I relate to feeling old in my 20's (25) so I hope she gets some relief
I see a not-so-visible hole at 0:48. If you slow the video down a bit at 0.25x speed or something, you will see the hole when she flicks the feather.
Emily and Ed, you two are so charming. I have learned so much more about reptiles and you made it entertaining! Much appreciations! A visit is in my future.
Chaka is just ✨special✨ and decided ears are overrated 😂
Cheyenne eyes pinning as she took her meds was adorable!
Seeing Chaka's brain on the radiograpghs was SO cool ❤
My 13 year old green cheek conure is also on meloxicam for her arthritis when she gets a flair up ☺. She’s not as fond of the syringe though. I need to give it with a bit of apple juice
2:03 no Cheyenne is dancing because she thinks yall are going to get rid of Chaka and she’ll be an only child again. 😂
Haha sorry but it's not funny
Aw, vet trips are never any fun, but they both behaved so well! Its funny my old lady buns are also prescribed Meloxicam for arthritis! Our current old lady takes it so well for us and its definitely helped her, so hopefully Cheyenne is as good at taking meds as my Storm and it helps her too! Exotics vets are really the best people!
I’m so glad Chaka is fine. I imagine having ear issues could be problematic for animals that fly. My only question is what was the smell coming from?
That is so weird! It looked like the skin grew over the ear hole. I'm glad that you mentioned the update about the smelly ear. I was waiting to hear that in the video. and surprised when you didn't mention it. Poor Cheyenne and her old lady pains. Looks like she's loving her new baby sister though!
Just a normal day with Emily, licking stuff that’s probably not safe for humans
Meloxicam is useful for people. Licking the syringe that has ALREADY BEEN IN THE BIRD’s MOUTH…maybe not so much. 😂
It’s also a human medication sometimes so it’s fine (It’s just for birds in this case, but it’s the same medication so it’s fine)
Meloxicam is very common NSAID Rx for people. I was on it myself for a while.
It’s definitely not safe to lick after your animals, but she’d be fine!
The biggest concern is if she caught something, or if she put the entire vial in her mouth. Though, again, don’t do it because this specifically is intended for the birds, not the people.
Meloxicam is MAGIC for humans too! My mom took it after her ACL replacement.
