I dont believe he's underrated due to circumtances related to his sexuality, but due to lack of sensitivity of music listeners. We all need to be talented as music listeners if we want to value a good song or singers, and this is unluckily very uncommon these days. Pet Shop Boys is the same idea. Not everybody is ready to enjoy and appreciate such as amazing artists.
I love that he sings such a dark, pleading and angry lyric to such an upbeat, energetic melody. It really nails both the defiance and the desperation. Such an incredible wordsmith, with such incredible songcraft
so glad to hear him play this solo live - it's how I want to learn it. There are so my dynamics and superlatives in this: joy, desperation, longing, compulsion, self-deprecating humor, drugs, very cool rhymes - totally a cabaret piece de resistance
It is proof that you dont really need anything else than your ability.Long live Rufus welove ❤ u round the world.Thank u for everything you ve done for music .
The first time I heard about him and listened to his live performance was when he opened a Sting's concert in Las Vegas almost 20 years ago. He sang this exact song and wore a red shirt like here (maybe the same one). I became a fan during that song because the whole thing was so beautiful... Still love this performance to this day... Thank you for uploading.
Love this guys piano playing. I can hear the samba in the hook (I always sway my hips when I hear that Am7-D7-Gmaj7 shuffle) and Beethoven in the bridge. A great musician. Rufus, what I would do to be your backup singer, piano player!!!!
+Andrew Arango I would love to do a duet with Rufus. His voice and mine have the exact same range and vibrato. I flip coins with you to sing with him.......
When Rufus was born, father Loudon Wainwright III wrote 'Rufus Is A Tit Man'. Never has a song been less prophetic. This song is fucking incredible! Thanks for posting ;-)
My partner and I had the privilege to see him in concert in our town (Harrisburg, PA) two weeks ago. Fantastic! Charming, brilliant pianist composer and lyricist, and very funny! Opening act was his Aunt..Sloan Wainwright. They rocked the audience!
This is probably the best version of this song I have heard. I love to hear that he has gotten better. He was always good, but listen to the fluency with which he draws us from one emotion to the next. He has a power now, that was still a fledgling ability when this song was written. Rufus is so much sexier now, and sounds so much more strong than ever.
I have listening to Rufus for the last 2 hours to prepare to go see him with my girlfriend fairly soon. The man is very talented. Great songs and in this day and age all credit to what he does. His voice is a bit too pretty if one has prefers a Springsteen or Seger but that is my only quibble. Rufus will have a long and great career.
He's the second artist I've come across who can sing amazingly, and who has a lisp. Lacey, the lead singer of Flyleaf, has one too. And both of them are amazing singers. I seriously adore this guy, his voice is gorgeous.
It's not very often a songs a classic before most people have even heard it. Caught him by accident (touring with Tori Amos)at The Fox in St Louis back in the late 90's... Blown away.
He's purely amazing, I mean...its hard to find artists that sound just like they do on records...and he's one that does. Also, his music is just so captivating. His music is so mild, and its a good artist to have in your collection.
2008, sitting on a terrace somewhere in Rajasthan making folk people listen to this, to today revisiting that day. It's etched in my memory. oh how we grow up from 21 to 31. F-

WOW! I'm so glad i found your music its .... Words wont do it justice. It moves me, engages me, and causes feelings. All that music should do to you... Your really great. Thank you for the music
Thank you thank you thank you. This was the video that really made me fall for Rufus beyond just Hallelujah, guh, and then I remember searching frantically for it after they took it off. Thank you so, so much. (And oh, Rufus.)
Love Rufus like a fantastic Artist... and like a handsom Man :) I am proud-to-be gay from Poland; proud thanks to Rufus, too. I was at Your concert in Warsaw'08 and will be this year !!!
He has the most peculiar way of singing and I think its why I like him so much...this man is incredible. If you have not seen it you have to watch Hallelujah..it will bring you to tears.
when i was younger i wrote a book about a guy, who i loved, but it was hopeless (the book is awful!!) and meanwhile i have been writting, i was listening this song without break! :) since thats time , its my favorit song...always remembering me: never leave yourself! thanks Rufus! :)
He is the true definition of underrated
He himself pointed out in one interview that his sexuality prevented him from getting some big opportunities. Sad indeed. Love him still.
couldn't agree more.
I dont believe he's underrated due to circumtances related to his sexuality, but due to lack of sensitivity of music listeners. We all need to be talented as music listeners if we want to value a good song or singers, and this is unluckily very uncommon these days.
Pet Shop Boys is the same idea. Not everybody is ready to enjoy and appreciate such as amazing artists.
et ? Où est le problème ?
I lived in the room he had at the Chelsea for nearly 8 years.
After all these years this is still such a charming video. Thank God for the Internet.
And especially you tube🇮🇪🙂
I love that he sings such a dark, pleading and angry lyric to such an upbeat, energetic melody. It really nails both the defiance and the desperation. Such an incredible wordsmith, with such incredible songcraft
you have it!
This song is Rufus' brilliance write large. There couldn't be a better illustration of his talent and his eccentricity, he's completely unique.
The way his fingers dance across the piano keys is a song in and of itself.
Rufus is a modern-day Oscar Wilde. Cheers to you, sir.
Love them both.
so glad to hear him play this solo live - it's how I want to learn it. There are so my dynamics and superlatives in this: joy, desperation, longing, compulsion, self-deprecating humor, drugs, very cool rhymes - totally a cabaret piece de resistance
If this was the only performance ever captured of him or this song, it would still be one of the legendary musical experiences of all time.
It seems so obvious now, but the major key for the happier lyrics and the minor key for the darker ones was just simple and brilliant!
this man is genius and he is really underrated.
Not by us x
Liking comments from the future. He’s still underrated. Oh and in the near future the president of the USA is that Pizza Hut guy.
Underated has its allure and appeal. It's where the dark, Joker part comes from.
from the moment I heard that song for the very first time I knew it would be an all time favorite
Rufus' live version of this song is on my top 10 favorite song list.
He looks incredible in red.
And I love the way his hands
just kind of flirt with the piano.
What a classy, classy man.
It is proof that you dont really need anything else than your ability.Long live Rufus welove ❤ u round the world.Thank u for everything you ve done for music .
I adore him
Hey, get in line!
Just kiddin'!
He has an amazing voice even live! Just listen to this, flawless.

Much better than the recording, truly amazing performance.

Rufus, you make my world clearer when I listen to this song and your work.

This is probably the best version of this song I have heard. I love to hear that he has gotten better.

great melodies! this song hooked me the first time i heard it. i bought the album the same day.
Actually, that is a reason why it's so perfectly in pitch :), no tensions wheresoever caused by articulation (e.g.). Good study example for vocalists!
well done Rufus, brave to take it on , well done, good job, love all your own work as well. You are a true artist -
[Lyrics]
Cigarettes and chocolate milk
These are just a couple of my cravings
Everything it seems I like's a little bit stronger
A little bit thicker, a little bit harmful for me
If I should buy jellybeans
Have to eat them all in just one sitting
Everything it seems I like's a little bit sweeter
A little bit fatter, a little bit harmful for me
And then there's those other things
Which for several reasons we won't mention
Everything about 'em is a little bit stranger
A little bit harder
A little bit deadly
It isn't very smart
Tends to make one part
So brokenhearted
Sitting here remembering me
Always been a shoe made for the city
Go ahead accuse me of just singing about places
With scrappy boys faces have general run of the town
Playing with prodigal sons
Takes a lot of sentimental Valiums
Can't expect the world to be your Raggedy Andy
While running on empty you little old doll with a frown
You got to keep in the game
Retaining mystique while facing forward
I suggest a reading of a Lesson in Tightropes
Or Surfing Your High Hopes or Adios, Kansas
It isn't very smart
Tends to make one part
So brokenhearted
Still there's not a show on my back
Holes or a friendly intervention
I'm just a little bit heiress, a little bit Irish
A little bit Tower of Pisa
Whenever I see ya
So please be kind if I'm a mess
Cigarettes and chocolate milk
Cigarettes and chocolate milk
I saw him in concert a few nights ago knowing nothing about his music. I was blown away and wish I had known him beforehand.
OH HIMYM PLS COME BACK TO MY LIFE!!!!
He is pure brilliance
I've always loved this song. What a perfect performance......wonderfully and very well done!!!!
WOW! I'm so glad i found your music its .... Words wont do it justice. It moves me, engages me, and causes feelings. All that music should do to you... Your really great. Thank you for the music

I absolutely love his voice...
I ADORE this song! It's my favorite, the one that got me hooked on Rufus...
...and here I was thinking I needed to work on my diction, pitch, and tone to be a successful singer... thanks for proving me wrong, Mr. Wainwright.
Holy shit. He’s incredible
If I could sing and play like that, I would never do anything for the rest of my life.
