What is really evident, Pat is selfless. Other artists might cringe at having an equal, sharing the stage with them, but not Pat. This shows that "the sound", is more important than any ego. And the sound represents the Pat Travers Band. Just knockout, stellar guitar work that leaves you wanting more. I've always admired Pat for his disposition for going beyond himself in giving the audience the best possible musical experience.

The drum deity Aldridge with the sorely overlooked Mars Cowling!? It doesn’t get much better than that!
Got to hand it to Pat Travers....when he has a 2nd guitarist in his bands, they're usually even better than he is, plus he gives them ample room to solo. I think that's not only the sign of a great guitarist, but a great band leader, to boot.

I built my first guitar around pat thralls guitar. I used a srtatoblaster preamp , DiMarzio x2n and Bill Lawrence pickups. At the time I was using a small Peavey amp but I still was louder than the guys with bigger amps. What a life! Peace

Now Travers is a great guitar player and a great singer, but I came here for Pat Thrall. He is just such an inspiration for me as a guitar player myself. He and Travers were such a pair
When we were young there were many reasons we learned to play. Clapton, Beck, Page, and on through the years, etc. All of them inspired. But Pat Thrall is responsible for a large amount our generation playing. He taught half a generation how to play...long before GIT. Many guitar players are in awe of his abilities and many of us also owe it to him that we can play like we can today. Both men are awesome players...and great together. My hat is off to Mr. Thrall for the contribution he made to my life and so many thousands of us...his students! I can still hear Snaker note by note in my head, 40 years later!

Danny Hood I hung with some older dudes who...um...taught me a few things...LOL! 3 of them were photographers for Automatic Man (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_Man and turned me on to the guitar player. When I saw a book at the music store (West L.A. Music?) with his name on it I bought it instantly. Good choice!
As a side note, if you watch the clip of Blackmore tossing his guitar into the photo pit against the stage at the California Jam you'll see three guys grab it first. One lets go, the other 2 go to the ground in the crowd. They did not get come up with it. Those are the guys I knew! Paul, Dave and Mike...I think it was...from Culver City.
@@dannyhood66 i had that book....wish i still did now - wow ...he made me the player i am , people always ask me where i learnt my style- between that book and scott gorham of thin lizzy ...it gave me all i wanted and needed ....i loved that book .

Pat Traver's Kick's Serious ass and ROCK'S, I have always been a Tommy Aldridge fan ever sense his first appearence with Black Oak Arkansas. In any music setting he Kicks and Rocks the stage . I miss these guys together making music !!!! They truly gave us great music and performances.
This particular band was ridiculous . Saw em twice. Loved the stereo flanging effect
until he went to smokin whiskey i was in awe. saw him play this and it just turned the worm. for me
ADA flanger they are worth a fortune now.
I witnessed it live, it was incredible. This lineup was the best live rock band I have ever seen and I have seen a lot and been in some.

..saw this band open for everybody back yonder...definitely T.A.'s biggest challenge and his best playing..great tone ,great balance..a real rock and roll machine this bunch..

I saw PT open for Foghat in 1980 at Detroit's Cobo arena...that was one helluva performance by PT, Foghat just couldn't do, PT stole the show that night.
This band kicked any bands ass that would ever go on before or after them.
Love ta see Boom Boom from this same time period with Tommy on drums. Something in 80 at UCLA. Amazing!!

Utterly devastating. One of the best shows I've ever seen and I've seen hundreds.
Mars is the most underrated bassist of all time, a true genius. Tommy Aldridge was the most badass sonuvabitch drummer in the world and when he soloed and started beating his drums with his hands the audience went insane. Then you have two fantastic guitarists weaving in and out and around each other, both obviously having a great time. An amazing memory.
@flamecolumn - If you saw them in 79, then it was probably across the street at the Fox Theater. I saw them there in 79 , and youre right about Aldridge - he was doing an incredible solo, then throws his sticks into the crowd and proceeds to just bash the hell out of the drums with his hands lol....incredible! The whole concert was amazing!
The Agora was great, saw ACDC there in 79 also. Tickets were $5

I agree BB! Saw this line-up in 1980 in Lakeland, Fl and they friggin' tore the place down!! One of the BEST shows I've ever seen, and I've seen quite a few. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better rock n roll line-up than this crew!!

Yeah..the Reading show would be great ..I've been listening to the audio for ages...originally when it was broadcast on the BBC Rock Hour and later when it was released as a CD on Windsong Records...that was a great show!!

Fantastic. Thanks for the upload. I saw these guys on this tour in San Francisco at the Warfield Theatre and they kicked ass. I still have the tape I had my buddie's Mom tape for me off the radio of that show. The two Pat's, Mars and Tommy were definitely an amazing collection of musicians. Too bad it was not to last.

When I got the live album I thought that Pat T. Played all the solos, but after listening over and over I realized that the other Pat T. Was joing in. I finally figured out that Thrall was outplaying Travers. I wish there were more videos of them together.
Not many guitarists played the Melody Maker. Part of Pat's unique tone.
His tone and pedals combination sounded so different and it stood out to me anyway.
Used to go see Pat here in Ottawa many times until he moved to London.
i saw pat travers in san antonio (my home town) just before the crash and burn album was released. the opening act was 'scorpions' (first time in s.a.) then pat travers band, then sammy hagar headlined......OMG!!! LOL it was a totally HOT show! but honestly as a professional musician, my opinion is .... Pat Travers - Pat Thrall - Mick 'Mars' Cowling - and - Tommy Aldridge ...STOLE THE F***ING SHOW!!!!!

Pat Thrall was an absolute sorcerer and an innovator. One of my favs of all-time from this era.
Two Pats in one band? How many times does THAT happen in history? Travers was a good guitarist. Solid. Good style and tone but Thrall was so much more technical. The solo in this is amazing for any era but 1980.. that's almost 10 years before the whole GIT Paul Gilbert/Greg Howe/et al shredfest happened. I bet if you asked 100 guitarists today if they have heard of Pat Thrall, 99 will say Pat who?

It’s such a shame that they don’t know who he is. This was one of the best rock/blues bands that ever played together. Tommy Alldredge, Mars Cowling… It’s an all-star band!
Yeah man Pat Thrall was the man here. He held back too because he could of blown Travers off the stage if he wanted to. Amazing guitarist. I saw them live a few times back in the day.
This line up was great. The current line up with Kirk,Rodney and Sandy is right up there with them.
Hey! What an epic lineup. I think they complemented each other great. We should not be comparing but we should be thankful that they were able to make music for a short period together. Pat Thrall is currently the in house engineer at a well known studio in Las Vegas. Travers is still touring and making records. Just released a new record last year called "Can Do".. Check it out!

Pat thrall? I heard pat thrall used to practice guitar at least 4 or 5 hours a day.. Travers said guitar player magazine 1980 crust .. i was fried Cross-eyed high on PCP dust.. called (lovely).. Haha...i called it crust.. people died.. its not funny anymore. I wouldn't even joke bout Thaaat .. brah's
kirk mckim - I know it’s six years later, but what’s the name of the studio? And, does he still work there? It would be worth it to buy some studio time just to hang with the guy! Beg him to play on my music-even to just record a jam!!!

Thrall was great no doubt. PT had it all the guitar style, great player. great voice and he looked good!
If this was Hammersmith Odeon March 1980, I was there and it was a friend who filmed it .. Simon Fallon .. is that right ??

Claymor - the guy is an all-around master rock ‘n’ roll musician, with one of the greatest rock voices OF ALL TIME!! Just like Pat Travers knew how to pick monster band members, Pat Thrall knew how to pick monster vocalists: Pat Travers and Glenn Hughes! Unbelievable!

Thanks for uploading this. I don't know what went wrong for Pat Travers. I saw him three times in the UK around this time and he had an incredible band... Peter 'Mars' Cowling is one of the best bass-guitarists that I've ever seen. OK... Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai and numerous others since, but it seems that the bottom fell out of the world for Pat Travers shortly after this.
Peter Marshall -I could be wrong, but I remember hearing something-decades ago-about him being blacklisted by the industry. I have no idea why. Maybe I’ll check his Wikipedia entry-I’ve never read it. Could’ve been the usual stories: drug problems, or just a lame, unsupportive, record company. A few of my favorites-such as Hughes/Thrall, Altered State, or World Trade, could’ve been huge if they had support from the biz. Sad, really.

The peak before they “crashed and burned”. The cocaine destroyed what would have been a phenomenal future for this line-up. I rate the Crash and Burn album as in top five of my rock and roll album list. It is an amazing album.
I have seen interviews from Tommy Aldridge and Pat Travers stating they were on the cusp of greatness and drugs ruined an amazing band. Cocaine was the excess that blew them away.
I'm not sure why he fired Nicko but Tommy's heavy style with 2 guitarists can't be argued with

Video from Travers' peak period is VERY RARE--not too much exists. I have posted stuff from '77 and the 1990's--check it out.
Daddy. IS this what TV looked like when you were a kid? Maybe this is a copy of a copy of a copy of a degraded old vcr tape on its last leg. Still so cool to see the sound is still mostly intact.
This version of ptb definitely had chemistry,videos of this particular line up seem to be few and far between

I seen rainbow open for pat travers , I guess was okay, he had short hair rockers with short hair pissed me off, He played snortin whisky twice, crowd particapant standing ovation.. anyways i accidently smoked a joint laced with pcp dust, that was 1981, i walked home lookin for fun , got my weinie got stuck in a double bun, was good 81 , saw judas priest in 82 back then i couldnt dress like you,, I got thrown in slammmer in good ol peru, back in 82 , Now in 1983 ,i was finally free , out for some hynie, got busted disturbing the priest, drunk n high out befor the sun touched the sky,

@@Scorchinscotty Hi Scotty. You are right, of course, these guys are master musicians and if you read my comment, you will see that the first thing I said was that I love this band. Indeed, I was playing it in the car this morning. I bought this album when it first came out in 1977 (I'm old), and still love it today. All I was saying is that, if you look carefully, you can see some of the elements of rock music at the time that This Is Spinal Tap was parodying. Also, if you watch carefully, Spinal Tap was a very affectionate parody, the guys in it clearly loved the music/bands that they were gently parodying, there is no maliciousness there. These 2 things exist in total harmony, I'm sure that Mr Travers himself would not be upset by my reference. I'm sure that he would recognise the similarities and in no way did I denigrate this magnificent performance. As the great Frank Zappa asked - Does Humo(u)r belong in music? You know the answer to that..... Peace and love.

Pat Thrall has no respect. You do not upstage the star. Travers is playing like he doesn't care, probably drunk while Thrall takes advantage. No one knew who Thrall was until he joined Travers's band. He left and disappeared. He never topped the Pat Travers band. Thrall may have been a better guitarist but Travers wrote the music and became the legend.
Pat Thrall brought me to Pat Travers. Thrall is one of the best ever. Listen to Automatic Man or Hughes-Thrall band. Amazing that Travers would allow himself to be upstaged for as long as he did. I tip my hat. But they both were great in their own way(s).
Eugene Westerly Upstaged? So Pat should have brought in a less talented guitar player into his band so he wouldn't be "upstaged"? Rush should not have brought in Neil Peart? The Yankees should not have brought in Babe Ruth? Eisenhower should not have brought in Patton? The Who, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and others should never have played together, because one of the members could be perceived as being more talented than the others and may "upstage" them? That's ridiculous.
Thrall didn't upstage Travers, and Travers was not upstaged by Thrall. They were simply bandmates.
Errr if Thrall's playing on Automatic Man years before was any indication of his actual talents, I'd say he held back with the Travers band.
Ever heard of the Dynamic Duo? Or Lennon/McCartney? Their power was exponential because they sublimated their egos, and joined forces to make something even greater than themselves. And, themselves was pretty great!!!! (At least, until they wanted to go their separate ways! If the record company had supported Hughes/Thrall, and Glenn hadn’t had his drug struggles, Pat could’ve had a second big band. Just because Pat Thrall didn’t have success after the PTB, that doesn’t negate his epic talents! There are many top-shelf bands that never made it! Ever heard of World Trade, or Altered State, or Stone Fury? Probably not. Gotta have the biz behind you-especially back then. No UA-cam, or way to promote yourself to the world, back then!) Oh...and one more thing: Pat Travers HIRED Mr. Thrall to be in his band. He knew who he was hiring. If you notice: they are trading licks and having a blast doing it! They’re not breaking their guitars over each other’s heads! If there was any ego clash, it came later. If Pat didn’t like it, he would’ve fired Pat right then! He was just fine having a power trio, and could’ve easily finished the tour like that. I think he liked being freed up to be the frontman, and also to be able to have the album sound, with rhythm guitar underneath the solos... not to mention, being able to do harmony leads, live!
