absolutely. even Mr. Reese said she was the conscience of the team. she was the only one who hadn't compromised her principles for any reason. Reese took her death the hardest, but she was definitely missed by all. even Elias had admiration for someone like Carter. her integrity spoke volumes.
For me it was Lionel beating the daylights out of Simmons and arresting vice killing him. It was the final redemption for him and why Carter was so good.
@@joethomas6277 Aside from Shaw (who was unlikeable) the show generally had very nuanced character writing. I just wish Elias had been a main character.
The way he says "I liked her very much and you killed her", god damn you can feel the rage and a tinge of sadness, I think he truly did come to like Carter.
The best part is how he says it so calmly. Yet despite his calm tone you can hear the fury, and you know you’re dealing with a man who will not hesitate to kill. I’ve always admired Elias in some morbid way. Just because despite his actions, he still has a moral code.
@@deb7457 I think that's where they really took notice of her and the more they interacted with Carter the more they understood she really was an honest cop and represented someone they valued be she was someone of character. That everyone knew who she was and what she would do because she was a cop and an honest to a fault. That really earned the respect of Elias who probably found that refreshing compared to the people he is used to dealing with.
And, when you consider the series, reflective of the dynamic between Carter and Elias. She saved his life when HR was going to kill him, even though he had threatened her son. So he did owe her a debt that went pretty far, all things considered.
You really think you're going to be the one to kill me? No my friend is going to kill you... I'm just going to watch. BEST LINE IN THE WHOLE TV SERIES!
It’s a great scene and line. More so when he pulls himself back into darkness when his friend is killing him. Since most of the scene he’s being polite
This scene shows just why this show is so great. The dialogue, and its delivery. Plus the framing and the lighting, everything about it is as near to perfection as you can get.
This whole three episode arc had some of the best use of lighting I've seen in a TV show. Like when John, Carter, and Fusco are all having their little interrogations/interviews, the lighting on John's face made it look like a stereotypical skull and he's an agent of death at the point the interview takes place...
Especially when the guy who killed him is another villain, who actually respected the hero. Detective Carter, getting the respect of a mob boss, like Elias and him wanting revenge after Simmons killed her is gold in my opinion.
I kept watching this scene over and over when it came out. I love how Elias' face just changes from that smile to deadpan - "I'm just going to watch." And then he fades in to the shadows. Awesome!
The lighting in this scene is brilliant. Half of Elias' face lit, the other side dark like the two sides of him he shows in this scene(how he talks about his respect for carter, and then watching someone get murdered) and then disappearing into the darkness when scarface steps into the light like some kind of angel of death. Just beautiful.
"I don't think she liked me. But I liked her very much. You killed her." "So now I consider it my responsability to fix the particular problem that is you, officer Simmons." You can feel despite his calm tone and his relaxed face that Elias is boiling inside for Carter being no more cause of Simmons. I believe he also considered John and Harold friends, and "fixing" Simmons is a way to ensure he doesn't retaliate on them and on Carter's son, Fusco and his son, and on both John and Harold. Elias died defending Harold and helping team machine in the final fight against Samaritan's organization. He was a man with many dark sides but not a monster or an evil man at all. A product of his times and a survivor who went to great length to reach his position but he had principles, he knew where to draw a line.
To me that was one of the most epic lines of Elias and he had many but this one stood out because you see the strange relationship between him and Detective Carter it really shows the complex nature of the show because Elias went from trying to kill her to being her avenger.
@@808INFantry11X Elias only wanted really one thing (or maybe two), but that was peace between mafia and end of the killings (second might have been him being the leader of all of that, but I don't think he really wanted that really). He just wanted to everyone to live in peace and being the mob boss of "all" mobs was just a way to reach that. He has peculiar way of justice and reason up in his head though. I'd love to play chess with someone like that.
He plays the smiling criminal, the realist with the veneer of humanity. I don't think he could play a power mad egomaniac looking to spit in the face of God. He could probably pull it off, but there are actors out there with truer, more appropriate intensity.
Cagliostro81 I feel like playing a minor batman villain would be a waste. If he was gonna play a batman villain, it should be someone better like Hugo strange or a more serious version of mr freeze
Interestingly, this is the most human thing Elias has done at this point of the show. Before this, every single action taken or word spoken by Elias has been a carefully calculated move towards a goal or a gain of some kind. Here Simmons will die in prison anyway, there's a risk of getting caught (a tiny risk sure, but still an unnecessary one), and even Simmons points out that HR is completely destroyed so there's no possible gain for Elias in personally having Simmons killed. Elias had Simmons killed not because of some plan or goal, but simply because he respected Carter and wanted to honor her in his own way. I also wouldn't be surprised if Scarface (the one who does the actual killing of Simmons) was already on board with ending Simmons out of wanting to posthumously repay Carter for saving Elias as shown by his emphasis on loyalty.
After Finch and Reese, Elias has to be my single most favorite PoI character. You have to love the man's style. Not to mention, he dealt with that jackass Simmons.
In the world of movies and TV we have all seen our share of insane and complex villains, however, I just cannot view Elias as a straight up villain and this scene is proof positive of just that...

Lost in all of the justifiably deserved praise for this scene, its acting and its impact is a little "love" for the terrific job Robert John Burke did over his two seasons on the show to create such a heartless character. Ultimately, both Elias and Simmons were lawbreakers, and yet both here could not be more sharply different.
@@deb7457 He cant have, as a mob boss the moment someone goes back on a previously made deal he would´ve to use force to fix the problem and Elias preferes to avoid that if possible.
This scene was so well acted, in Elias comments to Simmons you saw the brilliant cold hearted man that is Elias but @1:16 you saw and heard pain in his face and voice when he spoke if Carter and in an instant he buried it!
The way he says "older" is the essence of his character. They are the old guard, when honor among thieves was a thing. Where evil men had codes that separated them from the filth. Loyalty and honor, Elias his the definition of a mifia Don.
Well what he meant by older was before civilization before rule of law where anything goes and Laws were not factor in there existence. Honor amongst thieves never existed at any point in time. What he meant they represented and deep seated dark aspect of mankind that despite the invention of society they still exist just refined to match the advances made.
@@808INFantry11X He's referring to human nature in a way. That dark unconscious tribal violent part of us. Elias said he's embraced it but he knows his actions alienate him from polite society. But he still has his own code.
I love this scene the lighting is great. He’s half in the light half in the dark. So he’s good and bad part are showing I till he says my friend going to kill you. Where he leans back into the darkness fully.
My second favorite Person of Interest speech right after Finch's season 5 speech about him deciding how far he is willing to go to stop Samaritan. Also the music in this speech is just so perfect.
Hands down one of my favorite CBS shows in the past 10 years. Person of Interest started as the typical CBS procedural then it became something so much more than that and to me became one of their most unique prime time shows.
thepayne78 true. I started as a good show, nothing special, but pretty good. 2nd season was better than the 1st season with a greater story but season 3 just killed it. Every episode was perfectly made and the story was amazing af.
Mine too. What I like most about it, aside from the primitive satisfaction that comes with the death of Joss' killer, it that Elias is actually angry about Joss' death. It is ironic because, because once upon a time he tried to kill her himself. Despite the fact he knows that Joss did not like him, he grew attached to her, enough so that he wanted to avenge her death. Killing Simmons is the most human thing we have seen Elias do, because it is not a strategic move in his own self-interest, it is how he deals with a personal loss.
there are so many awesome things stuffed into this series.. the characters and their relationships.. ethical questions about society and AI directing/camera work.. the scenery (NY captured beautyfully!) the music. the delivery by the actors. my fav. series ever. together with BB
This was a “Godfather” kind of moment. The heroes can’t kill Simmons…because they’re the heroes, trying to make the world a better place. But Elias can. He’s a gangster. A gangster with principles and a code. This most corrupt of corrupt cops killed the most uncorruptible cop he’s ever met. His friend….. and he’s just going to watch…. Cold as ice
What I appreciate most about the scene is the irony of it. Initially in Season 1 Elias put the hit on Carter. Fast forward to Season 3 and he is genuinely angry she has been murdered (great moment by the actor at 1:15-16 were he takes a pause and just for a moment the corner of his mouth pulls down as a sliver of his rage slips through). As Elias once said, "Funny little world."
She saved Elias from HR executing him in the woods in season 2. That's the "debt" he was settling here. If Carter could shed her "black or white" position on law enforcement (which she did when she stopped hunting Reese and started working with him & Finch) and take a shades of gray perspective (saving Elias from a late night execution by HR's men)... then Elias can change his perspective on Carter too.
Such a great fucking scene man. Honestly one of my favorite scenes in the entire show. I just love the fact that although Elias is this really hardcore guy, and one of the most powerful and influential crime bosses in the city, and yet still recognized Carter, a cop, a detective, as someone he very much respected and admired because of her never wavering morals and determination to always do the right thing, regardless of what that meant, or what she had to do, which even meant saving his ass if she had to, which she did, and that he would be dead if it weren't for her. And although I seriously doubt that she would condone Elias killing Simmons to avenge her death, he still chooses to do so anyway because for him, that is what he feels like he owes her, and I for one can totally hop on board that train too lol. Simmons got what he deserved, morally wrong or not.
I love the symbolism with the lighting. He's partially in the light when he's being all jovial only to slink back into the shadows (where he's always been the most comfortable) when he gives the order
The way he talked about carter, you can guess there is a sense of genuine sadness in his voice. He really did respect her. And, he was looking for a chance to get back at HR anyway.
Yeah you hear it in the way the actor says i offered to kill you for her and she always said no. I like to think it was like a little joke between them he would bring it up in random conversations but she would tell him not to. Secretly Elias was just waiting for her to say yes one time and he wouldve really killed Simmons but carter never gave in. Elias is sad that her goodness got her killed. Elias is evil but hes more of a controlled evil. Hes evil with rules and reason.
“I don’t think she liked me.” Well you did try to kill her, kidnapped her son, and then tried to kill her again. Yeah, I wouldn’t like you on a personal level either Elias.
What I really liked about this was just how well the writers made this feel so satisfying. Elias may be the big time criminal, organising murders etc but just the way he handled certain situations and his views on crime and rules made him seem not as much of a bad guy as he truely was. Simmons on the other hand was probably one of the most intense and frightening characters, he just had an evil presence. Without even speaking he just gave off an intimidating aura which radiated even more when he did speak. Robert Burke did such a great job playing SImmons, he really made you hate him, he nailed the character.
"Now I consider it my responsibility to fix the particular problem that is you, Officer Simmons....." Come on man....... when you enrage the grim reaper, you know you're really stepped in it
When Elias was introduced he monologued to himself that the gang bosses along with his father were of the older kind and he is the new change. Here Elias admits he's something older himself
I love this scene so much...and I really miss Person of Interest. Everything about it was stellar. Elias was the last of those TV villains we love to hate. He was a true old school mobster who lived by a code. Carter saved his life, he's always been in her debt....
Best scene u can ever see whole serie... elias character really awsome"" my friend gonna to kill u im just gonna watch""... and he back to shadow... its amazing scene
I think this scene goes right up there with the Magnum P.I.'s episode "Did you see the sun rise?" When Magnum shot that guy at the end. :) I bet too that Elias's right hand man asked Elias if HE could be the one to kill Simmon's. He liked and respected Carter too.
Erm, Magnum P.I. is a cartoon with people. A Saturday morning cartoon at that. Person of Interest is so much better in every conceivable way but still good that you watched. Just not much of a comparison.
@@ReginaldJKornblow LOL uh, clearly you're kidding, right? If you think that about Magnum, PI. than you've never actually watched that show. Try checking out episodes like Home from the sea, Limbo, Laura, Memories are Forever 1 and 2, All For One 1 and 2, Going Home and Did You See The Sunrise before dismissing the show as "beneath you" . Person of Interest started out a great show but after this episode it became a Saturday Morning cartoon with two fighting machines and the bombastic characters of Root and Shaw. Magnum NEVER lost it and got better as it went on while POI got worse after Carter was killed, Reese was sidelined so Shaw could shine, Fusco had nothing to do and the show became the Root\Shaw\Machine show.
Say what you will about Elias, but he was still a man with a code and with a sense of honour, which is something we all can admire and respect and what made him such a great character
Carter saved Elias from being murdered by HR in the woods. "Enemy of my Enemy is a friend" They were on the same side vs HR. HR wanted Elias dead. So she wanted him in play.
Elias Thanos: In all my years of conquest, violence, slaughter, it was never personal. But I'll tell you now, what I'm about to do to your stubborn, annoying corrupt face... I'm gonna enjoy it. Very, very much.

Steven Houk Like Elias told Tierney, Elias has no tolerance for oath breakers!!
@@deb7457 He cant have, as a mob boss the moment someone goes back on a previously made deal he would´ve to use force to fix the problem and Elias preferes to avoid that if possible.
If I have a single favorite Elias scene, it's got to be this one. That careful, philosophical explanation--and then WHAM.
EPIC.
the "mmm, older" always gets me and offcourse, " i am just gonna watch"
Man, every bit of this is well written. The _glee_ when Elias talks about "fixing the problem that is you"
I love this scene the lighting is great.
Also the music in this speech is just so perfect.
thepayne78 my favorite speech is still the machine's final speech in Return 0, but this is DEFINITELY up there,
Hands down one of my favorite CBS shows in the past 10 years.
When Anthony walked around that curtain... Omggg. It was the perfect, silent close to Elias's beautifully given explanation.
Evil as it may, this is one of my favorite moment.
I wanted to do that myself
This is quite possibly 1 of the best written and best acted scenes ever filmed in tv or film.
Not to mention Elias wanted her dead at one point too. Goes to show how much she meant.
@@Grim_Concept wait when did he wanted her dead. can you remind me the episode?
I love the symbolism with the lighting. He's partially in the light when he's being all jovial only to slink back into the shadows (where he's always been the most comfortable) when he gives the order
The way the actor puts across the menace and evil inside him is out of this world.
“I don’t think she liked me.”
Well you did try to kill her, kidnapped her son, and then tried to kill her again. Yeah, I wouldn’t like you on a personal level either Elias.
This is the greatest scene in the entire POI series.
Imo when machine speaks to control through root is the best
What a scene! Fantastic scriptwriting and acting.
I've never seen that coming!
Elias finishing the job for carter.
It actually feels good to see how she created an impact for such a man.
One of the most satisfying scenes in POI ever!!! "I'm just gonna watch.." and then the look on Simmons face.....
Nathalie S Oh yeah!!!
Elias reminds me Raymond Reddington
I agree completely agree. Elias grew on me throughout the seasons of this show and I loved Red from episode one.
he is evil but smart and funny and a little good at times
Sinister, funny, and a monologue before a kill.
@@dff1286 same here
Good comparison!
I love the way Alias just sat back in the shadow as Simons was killed, it is just such a momument to him being a badass
"Now I consider it my responsibility to fix the particular problem that is you, Officer Simmons....."
Come on man....... when you enrage the grim reaper, you know you're really stepped in it
i love elias, this scene is simply outstanding!!!!
A real satisfaction scene. Perfect. One of the best scenes of all times also.
Elias is a total villain, but sometimes bad guys do good things. This is one of the good things Elias has done.
A GREAT SCENE! It popped into my head and thank goodness it was here!
Best scene u can ever see whole serie... elias character really awsome"" my friend gonna to kill u im just gonna watch""... and he back to shadow... its amazing scene
This scene is why I consider him to be the best character in the show.
Epic dialogue and epic speech....period
“I’m just gonna watch...” honestly chills.
Enrico Colantoni is such a good actor and he killed this scene and the role in general
Elias, taking care of business!
wonderful writing
I think this scene goes right up
there with the Magnum P.I.'s
episode "Did you see the sun rise?"
When Magnum shot that guy at the end. :)
I bet too that Elias's right hand man asked
Elias if HE could be the one to kill Simmon's.
Best scene ever. Many times, over and over again I am watching, not gonna older; never.
Simmons was the devil's share
Very cold blooded answer. "I'm just going to watch."
And, most cold-blooded of all, they say back and did just that
Elias is one of my favorite villains of all time
Fusco couldn't do what he wanted to do because he was no longer a criminal...Elias finished what Fusco was too good a man to finish himself anymore
When he speaks about her you see at one point sadness then fury. Beware of the ones that smile when angry.
Say what you will about Elias, but he was still a man with a code and with a sense of honour, which is something we all can admire and respect and what made him such a great character
*_Well, there remains a debt._* - I came to deeply respect and appreciate Elias from that point onwards.
Carter saved Elias from being murdered by HR in the woods.
"Enemy of my Enemy is a friend"
They were on the same side vs HR.
HR wanted Elias dead.
So she wanted him in play.
Just another epic scene littered throughout the show.
It never jumped.
Elias Thanos: In all my years of conquest, violence, slaughter, it was never personal. But I'll tell you now, what I'm about to do to your stubborn, annoying corrupt face... I'm gonna enjoy it. Very, very much.
Elias had a code. He was a criminal but he was honorable.
He didn't tolerate collateral damage.
He didn't want unnecessary attention to his organization.
Murder of good people doesn't sit right.
I think the shock value of seeing Elliot DeMauro (Just Shoot Me) turned mob boss going "full Godfather" here... just without the baptism...
The Hurt when he he said, But you killed her.
Damn, I can finally say I like Elias
I wanted Simmons to die but this entire scene gave me chills o.o
This scene was amazing, but gave me chills.
This scene has a separate fan base..
i always have to come back .....definitely one of my fave tv show ever
This brings back memories when I had time to watch and enjoy series. Oh man, I now work 5 days a week 8 till 7 and sometimes I work the weekends also!!!! Wow, I now realize I was blessed with plenty of time on my hands. I can not recall the last time I had the desire to sit down and watch a TV show, life has changed me for sure.
I must admit this was the scene that made me well up... and I was stoic even when Carter actually died. To me, this was Elias' redemption.
