I really admire how Russell sat back and allowed her to fully develop her ideas & statements and gave her that platform to speak uninterrupted. He very easily could have talked over her relentlessly but he chose not to and it's a phenomenal interview because of it.

One cannot have reached his level of Wisdom without having a well-developed ability to LISTEN and OBSERVE. It was phenomenal to watch him wield the Power of Listening in this clip! I'm going to save it as an example in my inchoate teachings in the art, power, and skill of listening. Well done Russell!
And well done Eric!--the construction and depth of your comment identified the unknown zeitgeist warming my cockles as I watched--a refreshing (new) experience of seeing a conversation BALANCED in the listening/talking. I'm saving your comment as well!

I love this lady. Ever since learning of her beautiful quotation about shining your light, and painting it on the walls of my room over 20 years ago, I have been inspired by her way of being to be the best version of myself. Thank you for speaking with her, Russell, and sharing her with us.

This is an extraordinary interview. I think even Russell Brand himself was subdued (somewhat) by Ms. Williamson's passionate and perhaps unexpected responses to his questions.

I love what she says about there being an Art to despair! It’s so true, rather than get taken over by your emotions. Realising that I am not my emotions yet come back to them each time and clear the space. Honouring and even listening to what the internal stories are, is healing and therapeutic as once you hear what’s being said you realise you are not what you think you are and can let them go, without being attached.
Progress & Momentum is everything and not stopping!

As an Atheist and secularist, Marianne Williamson's spiritualism does not resonate with me, however her positivity and moral stance moves me, and I believe she would be the greatest at reaching out to the Religious Right and Evangelicals in showing them the "light" on progressive policies that will benefit them.
-medicare for all as a human right
-money out of politics - remove the dark money and corruption in government
-criminal justice and law enforcement reform.

All my life, I was ridiculed for expressing my deep feelings. A passionate person was simply not allowed. After most of my life was spent in various medicine induced apathy sprinkled with terrible depression, I have weaned off all psycotropic meds & lo & behold, learned to accept my feelings. My biggest current sadness is how much time was lost trying to be "acceptable" to others. I'll use the time left to communicate my love to my family & make up for the time we lost. Dr's & psychiatrists have a vested interest in keeping you from dealing with life, see me again next week!

I discovered Marianne Williamson and the Course in Miracles, 23 years ago when my life fell apart. I saw her on Larry King talking about Miracles. And then I started reading the Course. So relevant to me, my awakening came after 2 years of depression, I woke up inside someone else's body and saw exactly where my life was leading.
I call it a spiritual slap to my face to wake me up.
Needless to say that I told others, it just seemed the right thing to do and became a spiritual healer to help others.
Thanks for this upload Russell and thanks for the interview Marianne :)

I appreciate Marianne's practice for helping depression .Bubble baths were always a favorite of mine for the blues too but we shouldn't ignore that there are biochemical causes for depression needing to be addressed and treated..In Joan Larson's book,HEALING DEPRESSION NATURALLY, she describes several different types of depression and their natural treatments ,using vitamins, minerals and amino acids and other natural supplements, with absolutely no use of pharmaceutical Drugs, whom she also believes are overprescribed and can be damaging. Also,it is true that 90% of seratonin(the feel good neurotransmitter in our brains) is produced in the GUT,meaning that a compromised intestinal microbiome is closely related to depression.Leaky gut, candida, low stomach acid ,gluten allergy,GMO foods, processed foods,Inflammatory foods, low intestinal flora, allergies, sibo, demineralized food, ect.ect ect..., all compromise the guts ability to digest and absorb nutrients and produce adequate amounts of seratonin.Heal your gut, heal your depression .

I too, am presently in a study group learning about the "Course of Miracles". I began it after I read Marianne's book, "Return to Love". It opened up a new & hopeful world to me. Love love love her - I do want to add though, that I don't think that it's always possible in the midst of severe depression to "show up for other people". When it's at it's worst you can't show up for yourself let alone anyone else. You can't just put it aside. That's sadness, not depression. There is definitely a time when you need to honour yourself and say, "I know others need me and I'm very sorry but I have to put myself first right now".

What she said about real spirituality recognizing pain reminds me of what my therapist said to me about why I decided to get help and get better "Looking at the pain became lesser than living with it (and keeping it buried)". And I find that concept to be profoundly brilliant. Its refreshing seeing someone else recognize that.

Anderson Cooper's interview pointed out that she's speaking from Scientology which we all know is very dangerous.
The pain of death can kill you.
You can literally die from a broken heart. Some need to be medicated for short of time.
I do agree that Americans don't let people mourn.
Other countries mourn for at least a year.
I just lost my daughter a week ago.
    The pain is excruciating.

I love that quote of hers near the end, what a beautiful line... "There is an art to navigating despair, an art to navigating depression." Doesn't that fill you with hope, even in that terrible darkness, that there can be something beautiful of anything and everything? There is some graffiti I've seen on a wall I pass often that says, "Every stumbled step can become a pirouette." I love concepts like this. It can be so easy in today's world to fight evil with good, but I find it so much more powerful to continue finding the good within the bad and point it out and let the evil do its transforming on its own. Very beautiful.
I also really loved Russell at 3:50 I hate to pick apart someone's every move but he makes a drastic movement, and I think its him dealing with that very heavy thought and reaching out for whatever is in his coffee cup, probably coffee, maybe even tea, but still I recognize so deeply that impulse to search for the answer outside of yourself like that, and I absolutely adored watching him yank his hand away and then look up at the camera as if to say, "Did you see that?" What a beautiful slice of reality thats been cut out and given to us. Thank you Russell Brand and Marianne Williamson!

i think theres need to differentiate between endogen and exogen depression. she mentions people being depressed due to external circumstances and i do definitly think she has a point behind pharmaceuticals not being the optimal way to overcome such hopefully temporary despair, however endogen depression is not triggered by the romans crucifying you or your gf breaking up with you. also, there is a timespan of mourning in the dsm to differentiate it from depression.

Nicely said. It's important to mention that endogen depression is likely treatable with psychedelics like psilocybin, as the FDA has just fast-tracked major research on this. The level of "spiritual" experience on the psychedelic seems to be the curative factor in the process. I have a feeling that consistent spiritual practices in general can target this, as well.

Thank you for your comment Byron, it really helped me calm down knowing someone else recognized this. What she said about depression really hurt. My family has a history of severe clinical depression and bipolar disorder. My "clinical" depression is genetic. According to her my experience as well as my family's is not real. Also, I don't understand how she disregards postpartum depression; she is a woman. It is more often than not hormonal and can be artificially replicated in animal models. Endogen depression is real and she has no idea what she is talking about. Rant complete.

Hi Russell, interesting conversation for me... revisiting the COM I explored some 20 years ago. As a seeker, I was excited to find the Vedanta philosophy (Guru, Vedas, Upanishads) which rings true for me... that our true self is God, the supreme truth. Tapping into this lovely mindset reminded me of a way of being which has brought a certain comfort and joy, despite the discomfort I still experience maneuvering the material world. xo

Thanks Russell for the topic st hand . I have suffered more than my fare share in life and when one sees me they would not notice . Through suffering and being alone l have transmuted all my thoughts and feelings into a state of a fearless being .
One aspect of qi gong that stuck to me is prostate tensing that creates an inner orgasm . I’m sure you know what lm talking about.
Here is the magic . Always, and l mean ALWAYS when you sense fear of any aspect , physical, mental or emotional , show gratitude with the inner orgasm .
I kid you not it works always .
We are led to beLIEve that we should fight our inner demons . Be grateful for the darkness for all is within , right ?

Marianne is one of the true voices of spirituality for me because she is able to acknowledge both the human experience and the spiritual experience. She acknowledges pain and suffering while also aiming to look beyond it .

Her poems, especially “who are you not to be...” is often heard in a yoga class to remind people of their Light and Love. 💚

I don’t believe in anything and I’m cool with that. I’ve been financially poor my whole life and have been sick and lived with chronic pain for half of my life. I read “Steal This Book” when I was a teenager and lived in Cuba for a short time during its Special Period and learned how to have a beautiful life despite my problems that have been created by a corrupt society.

I had that Abbie Hoffman book (I paid for it, I think). I had a long talk with him at the St. Marks Bookstore in the East Village. The real deal. Persecuted by the government. He lived it. Member of the Chicago 7.

Marianne will never need to have her speeches written for her. She is so natural, profoundly deep, fresh and extremely intelligent.

I saw Marianne in a Cafe in my city a few weeks ago, not purposely either I was sitting drinking a coffee at the bar facing the wall with my music plugged in..the place was empty when I walked in and I turned around shocked the place was packed and was introduced to Marianne she blew my mind with the amazing things she said, so happy I got to meet her! Even got a pic 😊😊😊 She needs 60,000 sponsors to be able to run in candidacy and she is at around 30,000 and needs them by April idk what day. She said even if it's just a 1 dollar donation it counts as a sponser!

I adore Marianne, I traveled 120+ miles each way, by myself to see Marianne speak about 10 years ago. When I gave her one of her books to sign that I had been reading and highlighting, Marianne was so humbled and happy to see all the highlights. She said this mean't so much to an author to see this. I am so glad she is running for President so people can hear her and her ideas. I think she is too ahead of her time to win the presidency, but I would love to see her as Secretary of Education or as an ambassador.
