HI. The video was very informative and helpful but Can you pls share the golden formula for making a huge round placematt which has only double half hitch knots ? I think this knot requires more cord length and I messed up one piece. Really need a tip. Thanks

Great video thanks, makes more sense now. I do have a question though... what happens as the cord gets thicker ? is it a different calculation. I have 6mm cord and feel that due to being thicker you would need to add more length.
Hi Sandie, as the cord gets thicker, it means you will need to make less knots to get to the same length and width, so the formula will still work if you keep the length you want constant. For thicker cord, I would go to the higher end of the range, but the formula should still work. Does that make sense? Thank you!

Absolutely! With jewelry though, depending on how intricate the knots are, I would definitely go with the higher end of the range to measure the cord. Unless your are leaving lots of space in between knots, I would definitely cut more rather than less. Hope that helps!
Hi, maybe I’m missing something, doesn’t it depend on the size of cord you use? What if you see a project using 3mm cord and all you have is 2mm? Would the ratio be different depending on the size of your cord?
yes, if you use braided cord, you always have to double or add onto the length. i saw another video where the person cut the knots and unraveled them and measured how much string went into each knot and depending on the number of knots and the width and length of the project, that’s how he estimated the length of cords to use.
The ratio here is good for 2or3mm...add more length if you go up on the higher side of cord thickness..

Hi there - I would still follow the golden ratio in the video. I would use a 4.5 multiple for jewelry at least since theres a lot of knots made.

Yes of course! If you are making a 12" length wall hanging for example and you want to use 3mm or 5mm, the formula will still work to get to that same length (although the number of knots / the pattern will be different). Let me know if that doesn't make sense!

Yea it does make sense, so far I’ve been only doing tutorials and have fallen in love hahaha, but for example sometimes in the tutorial says to use a 5mm rope and I only have a 3mm or 1mm so I cut the amount shown in the video, and at the end I have so much leftover, so I wonder if it because I’m tighten too hard or it’s due to not using the right rope.

@@alemx1004 You are right. Thicker cord uses more length, and thinner cord requires less length. I learned that the hard way too haha. So, I had the same question about using this formula - wondering how cord width factors in. I'm about to start a piece with 7mm cord but using a tutorial based on 4mm cord, and wondering how much length to add. I think I'll double it to be safe, but that's so much!
How do you know how to cut each individual rope piece? For instance, I am planning a large scale piece that will be used as a room divider. It will be 66 inches wide and 62 high using a top dowel and a dowel at the bottom to give it structure. This brought me to 528 inches or 1342 cm. So this is the total amount of rope I will need but I'm not sure how to cut for individual rope pieces... Thank you!
Hi Jessica, have you planned out the design of your piece? Depending how many knots you decide to use in your piece rows -wise will determin the length of your cords. If you are planning to fill the enter 62" inch length with knots, you will need to multiply the 62" by 4 times (at least) as stated per my golden ratio and then multiply bt 2 as you will be attaching it onto a dowel. If you are planning to make half of your piece using knots and the other half with fringe, then multiply only 31" by the same formula (x 4 then x2) then add 31" for the fringe. The number of strands you need to cut will depend on how much room you are leaving at the end of the dowel / the size of cord you are using. It also depends what kind of knots you are making (if you use square knots you will need multiples of 4 cords (so cut 2 strands at a time). Doing some quick math, to fill up 66 inches wide, which equates to 167cm, and say you are using 5mm cord, divide the 167 by 0.5cm to get 334, then divide that by 2 (since you will be folding the cord in half to attach onto the dowel meaning every 2 vertical cords is 1 strand of cord), you will get approximately 167 cords. I would recommend cutting 100 first and see how it fits, then keep cutting until it fits your desired width. Hope this helps!

Hi I'm to macrame. My question is, if you see a project that you want to do, but want to change the size how determine that? For instance change from 3 or 4mm single strand to 6mm braided cord. Thanks. I have purchased your 9mm single strand, can you refer me to any of these projects.
so the golden ratio that you have mentioned is when calculating total amount of cord or is this per lenght.
This is for calculating the length of cord you will need for each strand of cord. The width (number of cords) you will need will depend on what you are making and how wide you want it to be.
I appreciate how you have given the tutorial for macrame cord measurement but one thing I am stuck is how to measure the width.. I mean how much cords I need to put on dowel to make a curtain of 4ft and 6inch width
you have to keep filling up your dowel with cords to see how much cord you'd need. You'll have to do it in multiples of 2 if you are making Square knots as well :)

of course! Micro macrame is usually suuuper intricate, so using a higher multiple like 5 or 6 is recommended

It depends how much space you want left on the sides and what size cord you are using. The easiest way is probably to cut and attach multiples of 2 (more important if you are using square knots) onto your dowel until it fits where you want it to be!

@@AF-ki1ve 1.5m wide is pretty large. I would start with 200meters first but I'd think you would probably need around 200-300m depending on the intricacy of your pattern

There are ways to add cord, so if it doesn’t last all the way you can add more cords
Totally! Usually when that happens, it's at least half the cords in your project, and depending on the size of your project, it would be a lot of work to add cord lengths for all those cords, but yes - you can absolutely add cords if you need to. This is just a great way to measure more accurate cord lengths so that you won't need to :)

Bad maths, multiply directly by 8 for the knot region. Why make it a two step when you can do it easy.

Hello, if I understood correctly, she multiplies by 4 to have the correct length, but because in the example project, the cords are attached to a piece of wood, it needs to be multipled by 2.
Not all projects start with such a thing so I think that's why she said x4x2 instead of x8.
