    I used to be a social democrat who thought they were a "socialist" but I later converted to a libertarian socialist. Conversion is possible, the hardest part is helping them overcome the anti-socialist propaganda drilled into their head by the media, the education system, etc.
    When I was a social democrat, I used to think that communism was state power over the economy, capitalism was CEO control of the economy, and that socialism was a happy middle where the state and CEOs balanced each-other's control out so that the people could rise up. When I learned the real definition of socialism and communism and anarchism on tumblr, I started to find interest in libertarian socialism because I was already both anti-capitalist and anti-statist. I'm sure there are many people who would be libertarian socialists if they knew the true meaning of the words and the basic idea of decentralization behind it.

      The problem with ancom is that every ancom or anarcho syndacalist "place" eventually became a state again. and a terrible one. North korea was once ansrcho communist now they are the most statist in the world. Juche is basically national socialism taken 3 generations too far.
      Spain and portugal and other euro regions were ancom and become states again failing in both world wars and eventually instilling socialist capitalism to "level" things out.
      The only true ancom place left in the world is some fucking commune in california. And its inhabited by tweakers who dont even know wtf ancom is.

    I would also disagree with you on Che Guevara. What he helped replace, Batista's horrific regime, showed the world that their another way than capitalism. Castro's regime produces more doctors than any other country, has almost 50.50 gender split in its parliament, has free healthcare for all and one of the best healthcare systems in the world, has free education up to and including doctoral degrees, defeated the apartheid South African regime twice in Angola and started the downfall for that government, Cubans live longer than any other people in the Americas and they have the lowest infant mortality rates. All of this while under siege from the most powerful nation the world has ever seen only 90 mile away.
    What Che helped fight for could possibly pave the way for anarcho communism, it's already halfway there. The Cuban people are highly educated and have the skills to replace the role of the state.

    • @jplb96
      @jplb96 9 років тому +3

      ***** I have no problem in using the state against itself in order to improve the conditions of the working class. With Marxist Leninism, the vanguard party made up of 'professional revolutionaries' takes control on behalf of the working class. It was a way to steer the state towards eventual marxism. Unfortunately Lenin died before he could anything other that what he achieved and the Cuban embargo prevented Cuba from having free open elections for the first while after the revolution.
      The CIA were openly trying to assassinate revolutionary leaders in Cuba and implant dissenters into the society. Then when Castro clamped down to stop the US seeping back in the shouted dictator and tyranny which was simply untrue.

      Irrational Shark Like a lot of other countries economic reasons and economic freedom. It's not a rich country but with the limited resources it has it does much more than thought possible. I'm from Ireland and not long long ago we were ranked as the best country to live in, yet we have 10,000 of thousands leaving every year. We are a far wealthier country than Cuba yet we have many times the number leaving for the US than Cuba does.
      The embargo meant that many it costs huge amounts of money to leave Cuba, so people leave on rafts and boats etc. With the loss of the USSR, it lost large amounts of subsidies and when it collapsed, Cuba went through an extremely tough time for a number of years.

    I can't remember at what time exactly, but I believe it was between April and May that many teachers in Canada went on strike, and I can't decide whether I should be sympathetic simply because they are part of a union, as many teens were unable to graduate at the time as they couldn't get enough credits at the end of the year. As a teen myself, I would find this to be very much a nuisance that I couldn't graduate on time and start setting up for college and so on, but should I be sympathetic toward the teachers because I'm anarchist/socialist?

    What is your view on non Leninist forms of Marxism such as council communism, left communism, Luxemburgism, etc?

    • @mordechaiben-zvi3149
      @mordechaiben-zvi3149 9 років тому +4

      ***** Left Communism isn't exactly non-leninist.
      There's the Dutch-German line, which is pretty much councillism but has different nuances, such as the necessity of the Vanguard Party. For example, the Gorter and the KAPD vs. Antonie Pannekoek.
      Then there's the Italian-line lead by #BasedBae #Bordiga which is absolutely Leninist to its core. Hell, it actually criticized Lenin for being too liberal (www.marxists.org/archive/bordiga/works/1922/democratic-principle.htm). And before you say #Stalinist, Bordiga said up to Stalin's face that he was the "Gravedigger of the Revolution" and lived.
      Luxemburgism isn't an actual line of communism or anything. It is mostly adopted by Trotskyites( like LaRouche, though he's not the norm of Lux-Trots) or Wiki-leftists.

    Hey Cameron, you say that it's essential for an anarchist to support feminsim. However do you believe that all feminists must support anarchism?

    • @ElectricUnicycleCrew
      @ElectricUnicycleCrew  9 років тому +53

      Kevin Polucha I think so, yes. The main reason being that women's liberation is not meaningful if institutions of economic exploitation which subjugate most of the population remain intact. Feminism without anarchism would leave most working class women to be exploited at the hands of bosses.

    • @robtoe10
      @robtoe10 9 років тому +15

      +Libertarian Socialist Rants Would you not say that's more in the same line of thought as All consistent anarchists should support gender equality, all consistent feminists should support anarchism and economic equality?
      There are an awful lot of feminists who limit their advocacy of equality to gender, who say that so long as men and women can be exploited on equal grounds, then all is fine, rather than removing the exploitation altogether.

    Hi, first off thanks for some great discussion comrade and greetings from Australia.
    When looking toward the one big union that is the IWW, why have you chosen to focus on industrial sections having decision making power, but not civic groups, as in anarcho syndicalism and federalism such as the IWA? In the IWW the mass of the membership are individuals, voting for committees, rather than, as Proudhon puts it, "in which the people figures as a diversified aggregate of real associations..."? There are a number of other elements I could raise as well ... it seems that the IWW promotes anarcho syndicalist imagery, and subverts many of the ideas of actual anarcho syndicalism

    I do have one question about the living wage debate. I am for it, but, I think about all the teenagers in high school who get part time jobs, be it because they simply want spending money or they need to because their family is so poor. Does a 16 year old "need" a living wage? Or does this only apply to people with full-time 40 hour a week jobs

    • @theamazingmax9495
      @theamazingmax9495 8 років тому +1

      Well, regardless of wheather or not he 'needs' a living wage, he is still a vital part of the company that he works for, and as such, should receive fair compensation for his time and efforts regardless of wheather or not somebody thinks that his personal situation warrants it or not, because this is basically assuming from the outset that his labor is technically less valuable then that of an older person working at the same place who would be esrning minimum wage, which doesn't make any sense if they are performing the same job. The only thong that happens as a result of this is that the boss or one of the bosses gets a little extra at our hypothetical 16 year old's expense, or that money is just shuffled back into the business, and doesn't make all that much of a difference when it comes to actually improving it. After all, it would only likely be a handfull of dollars, so it isn't going to make a huge difference to the boss or the operations of the company if this money os fed back into their bank accounts, however, it does make a huge difference from the perspective of the 16 year old who has earned his money, but is slighted simply because he is 16 as opposed to 18, meaning that for some reason his labor is less valuable (yeah, because that makes sense),

    • @theamazingmax9495
      @theamazingmax9495 8 років тому

      You seem to misunderstand the math behind what I'm saying. I'm not saying that all companies are some sort of cash cows that can afford to pay everybody $15 an hour, and I actually don't fully support the concept of a minimum wage at all. What I am saying is, that even for a company that generates low profit, it is just common sense that the owner gets a much larger share of what profit the company does turn, than the laborers who created that revenue, who get no say in how the results of their work are distributed, which I view as an injustice. I want the government to back off as much as possible, and that means the lowering or abolishment of a federal minimum wage, as you'd have virtually no need for it under a socialist economic system. The minimum wage laws were introduced as a check on capitalist business owners, so that they couldn't all just pay their workers $2 an hour and take off with the rest. Under socialist principles, the people would entirely control the management of revenue, meaning that it would be pretty much evenly dispersed when you go by democratic vote as to how to distribute these assets, so there would be no need to check a greedy owner. A minimum wage law wouldn't make sense in a society where the means of production are owned entirely by the proletariat class, as there is no overlord who has control of the money, and can make off with the larger share of it. If anything, socialism would cut down on the need for social safety net programs drastically, because more people would have more money, and be able to care for themselves. Also, their jobs couldn't be exported overseas by some CEO looking to save a few cents, as there would be no employer, or singular owner of an organized corporation that operated under a system of collectivism.
      I realize that employers can be people as well, however, that does not change the fact that a vast majority of them are putting their employees at a very large disadvantage by legally being able to hoard the majority of the wealth produced by the people that work just as hard as he does. It's basically legal theft. Socialist economic principles would actually work in the best interests of the bottom 80% of the population, who at this current point in time is left to fight it out for fluctuations between 11-16% of total wealth in the United States that has gone slightly up, and taking larger steps down for decades.

    I find it hysterical that this guy is recording a video to talk about the advantages of anarcho communism over capitalism, but in order to record his video he used a camera made by a profit seeking company, a microphone made by a profit seeking company, video editing software made by profit seekers, posted it on youtube which is a profit seeking company, he got up this morning and maybe took a hot shower and that water was made hot by a water heater made by a profit seeking company, his clothes were made by profit seeking company, the food he eats was made by profit seeking farmers and distributors, basically, everything this guy takes for granted; food, clothes, entertainment, leisure, technology, literally everything, was invented and produced by people seeking profits by producing something that they suspect their fellow man wants or needs and yet he feels he is oppressed by capitalism. That seems strange to me.

    Tending more towards anarcho-communism these days, but I have a couple of questions not addressed in this video if you or someone else knowledgeable could answer it'd be great.
    1)How would a commune make sure there are enough people in each area of expertise to keep up with demand for them? The capitalist system has an alright way of dealing with this - increasing wages when supply becomes lower than demand. Would you just let everyone have their dream job and hope it works out? Draw straws? Or are you confident you could "turn work to play" enough for all jobs to be equally desirable?
    2)Would it be appropriate for communes to exile those who do not do their fair share of work or behave antisocially (after warnings and rehabilitation and all that)? If not, how else would such people be dealt with?
    3)Although I agree with prison abolition to a degree, what would be done with those who murder and rape? I believe a communist society would not give anyone incentive to form organized crime groups, but there are those who are socio/psychopathic, and crimes of passion, and these people surely shouldn't be around those living in communes or even the exiles (assuming they exist) and voluntary isolationists, etc.
    4)How would bigotry against minorities in a commune by majorities (ie. a black person in a majority white commune) be prevented? Do you just hope that education will do away with these attitudes?

    • @twixieshores
      @twixieshores 8 років тому

      Not really sure how this would work in every situation, but I'm helping to start an anarcha-feminist/communist commune, so I'll give you the answers to how we are going to proceed.
      1) Try to recruit the people necessary to make the commune successful. Make sure you have a couple skilled farmers, builders, engineers, cooks and doctors. Those people can work on training others. Labor is first separated by skills (if you're a doctor or nuse, you're going to be a doctor). If you don't have skills, you'll be trained in jobs that need to be filled, with you getting a choice if there are multiple types of jobs that need to be done. When it comes to things like harvest time, where more workers are needed on the farm, workers in other fields will help pick the crops.
      2) We will ask people to leave who are able to put in work and are unwilling to. If someone came down with a debilitating illness and was unable to do any work at all, obviously we wouldn't make them leave. As for improper behavior, the plan is to try to move people who aren't getting along with each other apart (change of job, different housing assignment, etc) and if that doesn't fix the problem, the trouble maker will be asked to leave.
      3) Once found guilty by the commune at large, the person in question would be exiled. And in a case as serious as rape or murder, they'd never be allowed to return.
      4) See the latter half if my answer for number 2. We make it very clear that we do not tolerate racism, misogyny homophobia or transphobia in any way. Our members are to agree to those rules when they join. If they don't want to follow those rules, they can leave. We have only three rules
      1) Do as much work as you're able to until the work is done.
      2) Don't be greedy by taking more than you need.
      and
      3) Be pleasant towards your fellow members.
      All of those rules are extremely simple to follow and if you can't, maybe our commune isn't for you.

    12:00 no, they are distributed according to want. In order to distribute by need, you would require a centralized power determining what people need so to make sure nobody lies, which is antithetical to anarcho-communism.
    Ah, but you communists think human nature is good and pure.
    If there isn’t somebody determining or checking what people actually need and not want, then are you just going to trust people?
    13:00 you refer to a test on universal basic income, but that is a form of capitalist welfare, not communism. They were living in a capitalist society in which there was still an incentive to work because the UBI wasn’t immense and they could spend their money on stuff they wanted. But in your system, what people produce doesn’t matter.
    13:30 firstly, this experiment is a sample size of one. Secondly, the surgeon had been trained in the practice and knew everything about the trade.
    I only see communism working in the future when automation gets so good that humans are mostly irrelevant in labor.

    I would like to ask, given a Anarcho-Communism society is achieved, and there are more than one group of people which is divided in terms of common interests. If there are contradictions between the interest of some groups, such as each group own different goods and there is a uneven bargaining power in a trading between groups. How would a Anarcho-Communism society solve such problem? And how can we acheive Anarcho-Communism in a international level, given that there are different cultures in different places. How to eliminate racism and xenophobic in such case?

      Personally I would lean towards the idea that an enterprise of one can be structured however the person wants, but, should another person become involved in the enterprise, then a democratic means of management must be involved. In socialism you don't hire employees, you form partnerships based on equality, with the understanding that freedom means that everyone should have a say in the decisions that affect their livelihoods.

    How would a person like myself who has really difficult time socially, difficulty interacting with others like social activity makes me miserable and feel suicidal,serious depression anxiety issues, and can't work or be employed...how would people like me function in a anarcho-communist setting? Would there be social space for people to simply be, and still be treated fairly and included? It seems like everything surrounds working in a society like this, like the work place and what about people who have mental, psychological,emotional difficulties, challenges or peculiarities and are loners or are minimally social or unsuccessful?
    any thoughts on Bernie Sanders in America..I really hope wins , I know he is not anarcho-communist but he is far more progressive than most politicians here in U.S.
    One more question any thoughts on Scandenavian countries and their methods of socialism and also the their prison system and ways of dealing with crime.
    I personally really like and respect their model and appreciate their orientation towards a more elevated humanity...would this type of mentality be possible in anarcho communism? or would it be more of a society where harsher punishments are handed out.

You keep saying that but you never specify. Not everyone is a 1800's factory worker. How are people who work in IT, STEM, Medical fields including research and development in those fields etc; supposed to keep what they make and own the means? it makes no sense. I am an anarcho-communist, however I cannot disregard some of the flaws that I see with this position. I would love for someone to be able to explain to me how some of these problems could be solved. Say for example there are two communes living side by side. Internally these two communes operate and allocate their resources flawlessly, however these two communes are not necessarily on good terms with one another. Commune A has access to a resource that Commune B needs in order to survive, but Commune A is reluctant to share this resource with Commune B. How do you solve this dilemma?

      Higher salaries ARE an incentive, just not in a communist society. We live under capitalism, so making more money is always a goal, if you are to be sure that you can eat and have a place to live. Once capitalism is gone, the other incentives (helping the community, doing something with your life, having people not die of typhus in the streets) will take the place of the monetary incentive.

    Basically an ancap here.
    The way I look at it, capitalism as conceived by ancaps (codified voluntary association) is a social parameter being supported in addition to the political persuasion of anarchy. We don't want rulers, but we are perfectly fine with you keeping what you can earn without harming anyone (because all harm is involuntary as any detriment which is conscented to is voluntarily accepted and therefore cannot be considered harm) and then using that which you've earned as you see fit.
    I see ancom as politically anarchist and authoritarian on social issues such as feminism. You're not allowed to freely associate. You're required to conform to the social narative of community and equality. There's no room for supporting merit with advancement in ancom. You'll always be equal no matter how hard you work or how well you perform. The only way to lift yourself is to lift absolutely everyone, which incidentally makes you a leader if you're able to do that on your own even while maintaining equal power to all around you.
    I'd love to have a respectful and nonideological driven conversation with any ancom and I think we have a lot more in common than you'd expect.

      +Seth J. (oTOYOTo) Yup he is prick at times. He has done a few videos in the past on anarcho communism. The reason why I think communism or socialism fails is because it cannot determine the value of items along with that it provides no incentive for a better product.

    • @otoyoto7153
      @otoyoto7153 8 років тому +2

      +Noah Schuler Capitalism doesn't determine the value of items, people do. Just because money doesn't exist under communism it doesn't mean people are totally blind to the value of an item. And the incentive in capitalism is "cheapest quality product, charging the highest possible price" sure occasionally the opposite prevails but usually it doesn't.
      I think the reason capitalism fails is because of the inevitability of the vast majority of wealth being concentrated among a very small group of people, meaning the rest of the population is essentially enslaved by the few.

The majority of crime is the product of social problems like drug-addiction, isolation and lack of adequate access to resources. The other elements of crime tend to stem from mental health problems -psychopathy etc - and must be dealt with from within that paradigm: unlike today where Prisons often double as Asylums.
      In an anarchist world such problems should be dealt with on a case by case basis. The question of Why becomes more important than What, Who and How. Ultimately the notion of law enforcement as we currently know it would have to be transcended in an anarchist society.
      As for market focused non-state based solutions to "disobedience". We have a couple of examples in realm of the black market; almost all of them involve extreme levels of violence.

      Franticalmagic I agree, as long as as someone doesn't initiate the use of force it isn't a crime.

      Initiation of the use of force is a poor moral rule; it's too vague to tell us what it means on its own. NAP and the like depend on definitions of property and self-hood to be made meaningful.
      In short, people differ on topics like property and self-hood so in turn they differ over what counts as initiation of the use of force. The split between anarchists proper and voluntaryists etc is not whether they think violence can be initiated against others but rather precisely what counts as such an initiation.

      They asked for the anarchist solution, not the capitalist one.

      +littlebigphil oh okay, I was a little confused of how someone could be a a socialist and anarchist at the same time

    13:40 just think of all those people who would go to medical school if they did not have to go into debt for it. People act as though being a doctor or neurosurgeon is this somehow awful, unfulfilling work. It's not.
    And also, the "to each according to his need" part often gets overlooked or misunderstood. As some one who has worked in social work and mental health, I strongly advocate for self care. This includes "spoiling" oneself. Yes, being a physician is stressful work. And sometimes one's need is to check out, take a little break while being supported in mental and emotional recovering, and maybe even treating oneself to "luxury" goods or services once in a while. Doing those things is not anti-communist, especially when it incorporates the knowledge social workers and therapists have developed over how complex human needs actually are.

    I went from a right-libertarian (US version) to a social democrat then democratic socialists and I am now a libertarian socialist. I don't think libertarian socialism will truly happen in the modern world though on a meaningful scale (shoot me, I'm a pessimist.) If libertarian socialism was more well known I think more people would be libertarian socialists or at least democratic socialist. I see libertarian socialism intentional communities becoming more common in the upcoming years. I would LOVE to live in a libertarian socialist/anarcho-collectivist community! (preferably with environmentalism in mind)

    From listening to your videos over the last few years I have changed from centre right to far left. I have gain a huge interest in politics and socialism. I really appreciate and look forward to your videos. However I am not totally convinced on the complete abolition of the state ( I believe it has a role to play) nor am I fond of the people on the face of the feminist movement. I was wondering if you recommend any reading material on these matters if you have not done so already?

      jplb96 Start by Bakunin and see the "Organizational platform of the libertarian communists" and the writings of Makhno and the other comrades of the Dielo Trouda. Those are the best literature in the anarchist doctrine.
      Also, read Marx, a lot of it. Anarchism is not the antithesis of marxism and therefore there is no reason to reject everything he says (and he says quite a lot of useful things).I would recommend that you avoid reading Chomsky on the subject of anarchism, since he is quite idealist in his analysis.
