- Rare Film**** The 1971 Casper Wyoming Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps at the VFW Nationals Prelims at the Cotton Bowl, Dallas Texas..Placing 4th at prelims and 2nd place at finals.. A Tinknocker Production..
I was an extremely proud 15 year old playing in this competition. 40 years later, I sit here with a tear in my eye and a sense of that same pride in the men and women that I practiced with, marched with, sweat with, lost and won with... and to this very day, love.
Robert Marshall Casper’s majorette in white is the absolute best I have ever seen
I love watching her. I wonder where she is now.
My experience with the Troopers was like no other...I carry those moments with me every day!
@@joemarrella4105 joe, when I was a member of the, Floyd Bennett golden eagles, from Brooklyn New York, your father judged us back in 1960 and 61, I played snare drum at the time. We always thought of him as one of the better judges. Also John Dowling, we came a friend of mine in 1992, when we started the American Spirit senior alumni drum and bugle c o RPS, May rest in peace. He lives in Pasco County and I lived in Pinellas County Florida at the time, he would drive down on Highway 19 and meet me at a shopping center and we would drive down to, Suncoast sound, rehearsals they were trying to start a senior c o r p s. The major problem we had, with the people, that ran, Suncoast sound, is they put us down from day one, they were telling everybody those old guys don't know anything. I did do a parade with them just holding a bugle wearing Suncoast uniform, it was a night parade in Ybor City. We use the Drumline from Eastlake High School, that's where my daughter graduated from. We also had people from various Junior course come down to rehearsals, most of them did not know many rudiments. John wrote drum parts for Barnum & Bailey, and I was showing a former snare drummer from Casper and one from Cincinnati, when it came to playing a flamecue they did not know what it was. The sad part is Suncoast sound fell apart, because they refused to do a local parade for their sponsor which was Circle K, they thought it was beneath them. Circle K dropped them like a hot potato. Circle K donated I believe two 18 wheelers, some other truck like a six-wheeler, all sorts of money paid for instruments, gave them a place to practice. And for them to refuse to do parade because they thought it was beneath them, competing in DCI went to the heads they thought they were above what purpose did. End of story consequently American Spirit did not receive any horn players that joined with the exception of one snare drummer, he was fairly good to be honest with you but he was eager to learn what John was teaching. I still have a copy of the drum parts that John wrote for Barnum & Bailey. We became very good friends over a period of time discussing how common bugle Corps competitions were and, more details about what they were. He was extremely interested well educated man. We went out to dinner as couples with his wife and my wife at the time. Today's date is August 29th 2022. How time flies.
@@americanspirit8932 I am the Joe Marrella who was the judge…John Dowlan was my mentor and close personal friend. I was given his Customized rope drum by the family because of our relationship. Because of John’s faith in me, I began teaching, winning drum championships and have now been elected to 7 different Drumming Halls of Fame…the most recent one with BUDDY RICH!
Thanks so much for posting this!!! My wife was one of the girls twirling the rifles. Her name was Wendy Lynch back then. Wendy passed away in 1988 in an auto accident (Wendy Lynch Pando) Thanks again. I and her four children appreciate seeing this.
Harleypilot767 sorry for your loss. my friend bill adameski also marched in the troopers, playing baritone horn. he also in the Racine scouts and the marine drum corps. he lost his life in an auto accident, too.
@@dancurrier6329 My respects and Semper Fi to your friend. He had to be a great to be in the Presidents Own.
USMC 70-74
So sorry to hear about your wife's passing. The Casper Troopers, America's music ambassadors, in my opinion with the absolute best Junior drum and bugle Corps at that time. I was at that contest, with a good friend of mine Bob Porsche key, who passed away as well. He also thought The Casper troopers were the best, and should have won first place, may they both rest in peace. Today is May 27th 2022. Former member of the Long Island Sunrisers 1964 through 1968.
The presentation of the colors!!!!
Thanks for sharing. It's great to see a vintage performance by a classic corps that has kept their quality and style going all these years outside the geographic sphere of mainline drum corps.
This is an excellent film and video this gentleman produced of Troopers in '71 VFW's. Thanks again for posting this Roy.
Thank you for all the memories that come flooding back watching this! My younger Sister was a rifle Cindy Bartram. She passed away in 2000💜
Cindy was one of the most beautiful and demur people I knew and was kind to me as a drummer
in the Troopers. I miss her and these times.
Thanks so much for this.
I marched in the 60s with the Royaleers and then the Magnificent Yankees (when they allowed girls to be in their guard). The Casper Troopers are the reason that local corps started to march mid-west style heel to toe roll. I have loved The Troopers ever since and it is a thrill when they come to our local drum corps show Drums Along the Mohawk. When they do their wheel, tears still come to my eyes. Feelin' nostalgic.
I wish there was a way to bring back some of this old school DC. Wow!
I hear you loud and clear Leopold. Welcome to the congregation of old time drum corps. We corps vets of the '60's and '70's played our hearts out for fans then. An we appreciate people like you who like and embrace old time drum corps. Best regards.
I agree with you 100% old school drum and bugle Corps, was very exciting each core has its own identity, and the stadiums were jam-packed with excitement and standing ovations. I flew in from Long Island, and sat next to Bill Ludwig senior, during the entire prelim competition. Great memories.
Damn, I wish I could've seen the days when it was an actual marching show as opposed to modern Drum Corps, which is all horn players dancing in spandex with microphones and recorded audio. Modern Drum Corps is still impressive, but I just prefer it like this.
DCI's 2019 champions, I apologize for forgetting their name, did a wonderful job combining old school drum corps with today's drum corps
It's worth a look.
I marched for a Class A corps back in the '70's and it is sooo different today. Mainly because of the people that end up working for DCI. Drum Corps was all about execution. It's almost like some sort of broadway play put to music now. It's pretty disappointing
Thanks for posting these old vids. Enjoying this evenings' virtual trip back to the old days. My first meaningful DC memories began in 1974, so these are, for me the REALLY old days. My family had a bunch of DC records, some of which dated back to '68. Never got to hear this stuff in person, but I can only imagine how freaking great it must have been to experience. You get that audio blast of a great horn line in your face...nothing like it, man! (That feeling, I think, continues to this day.)
Of course, DC has changed quite a bit over the years...and, well....I don't want to be a grouch about it. Things change. I just hope the kids of today can appreciate their historical ancestors, and appreciate how good they were, and how AWESOME it was to behold and hear. And...how great it made you feel to be a part of it.
Favorite Troopers memory: 1966 American Legion Nationals were held in Washington and my corps (St. Joes, Batavia, NY) was to visit with our congressman. We get off the buses and are walking through to trees to the Capital and there on the steps are the Trooper playing Battle Hymn... truly one of the most inspirational moments of my life! I tear up even now thinking of it. Thank-you Troopers. You always will be one of the GREATS!
I was there at the American Legion Nationals playing with the Island sunrises, and the parade in Washington we followed the Troopers we were right behind them. When the parade stopped everybody took a break and had the opportunity to speak to some of the people in the Casper Troopers great people. Great memories as well.
I was there at the Big D VFW prelims and finals! Loved every show ,especially the Troopers!
I love that gorgeous exit, "No Goodbyes" from HTWWW. Just lovely.
I was 15 y.o. marching for the St. Matthias Preps (feeder corps to the St. Matthias Cadets), Milwaukee, WI. I just saw to the right of this a 1968 pic of the Troopers doing their signature m&m move...THE STARBURST!!! The Troopers were my very favorite corps (located outside of Wisconsin, that is). I've got to play that vid now. Thanks for the memories!!! (you, too, Bob Hope!).
Damn, if this doesn't bring the memories flooding back!!! My 2nd yr in drum corp with Santa Clara Vanguard playing 3rd sop (talking about the OLD horns with the piston). I believe this was DCI's 1st yr in existence. Thanks so much for sharing the video! Oh, & by the way we won this championship as well!!
Exiting to "No Goodbyes" from "How The West Was Won"...so lovely. Thanks for the post, Roy!
I remember Dallas well. Crusaders and Troopers stayed at same hotel, however, we, BAC, actually wanted to socialize, but we think the Troopers were hiding from us. We admired the Troopers and had no intention to cause distress, LOL.
classic and classy....long live the troopers
That when it was about talent, and not about money. And a small corps could compete. The Troopers were one of the pioneers.
Thanks so much for posting! This is just cool stuff!
I've said it many times "Americas Corps"!
I remember those days 🎉❤
those were the days.....
In '72 I was 12 and just getting my start in drum corps. Now you hear a lot of things when you are a kid, but I recall some of my "elders" talking about the Troopers doing 1812, which would have been great to see.. The fairy tale part I am trying to track down is, did the Troopers or anyone ever do 1812 and actually set off a charge in a contra for the ultimate cannon GE effect? Yes, this sounds crazy and crazy-fun, but it was heard through the ears of a child. Was this in fact a myth? If so, someone needs to actually do it! And it had better have a solo element that gets out of the *## register! I am sick DCI level corps that put the breaks on the upper register!
in response to lot of dust out there not sure what I missed ? just got thru listening to a TROOPER cd I have the old school stuff
Figured it out. Holst March E Flat.
How do I get the total 1974 program of Casper trooper.
You must have missed it Daniel....There's plenty of that dust being sprinkled out there.....
Nope. They tried it but Boston was penalized a point for using fairy dust (ahem... powder) in prelims.
DrumCorps N Skii
Why did they edit out the drum solo?
Does anyone remember a drum 🥁 and bugle corp back in the the late 60's and early 70s from The Detroit Michigan Area .The Ross Royal Cadets.

Completions as well as going up against some of the greats like the

Looked all over and yet to find ANYTHING about us..
We were in all the Parades as well as Traveled to
Completions all over..Please ..Someone
Has to know something about ""The Ross Royal Cadets "" from Lincoln Park Michigan....
Try asking in the Facebook groups “Drum and Bugle Corps of the VFW and American Legion” facebook.com/groups/378963845509729/?ref=share&mibextid=tejx2t or the Drum and Bugle Corps Museum and History page..I’m sure there is information about your corps..I’ll ask around also..
Americas Corps!
this is REAL drum corp not that CRAP they are promoting today trumpets ,xylophones ,stationary drums what joke whats next FAIRY dust !
thank George and the corps who have money to spend and will. They can crush the competition without taking the field.
Couldn't agree more. I miss the days of the military stile snap and precision of yesteryear. The rifles were all in sync and actually marched instead of the dancing and prancing of today. The uniforms were just that and not the costumes of today. There was no need for electronic sounds, mics and speakers. Save the dance and electronics for the theater. Oh well, nothing lasts forever.
@@Philsy I agree with your comment 100%. In my opinion, DCI, is the reason for the demise of what was one of the greatest youth activities in the United States and Canada. They turned it into a marching band competition, superimposed on a three-ring circus. We no longer have, Real Drum and bugle Corps. May they rest in peace. Today is August 29th 2022
