Boosey & Hawkes Concert Band - Grade 5
The first published work for band by John Barnes Chance, this landmark composition has remained an important part of the repertoire for more than 50 years. This completely re-engraved “Second Edition” corrects many of the errors from the original printing, and also restores the composer's important performance note from the manuscript. Featuring a wealth of melodic and rhythmic inventiveness, as well as the innovative treatment of the percussion scoring, Incantation and Dance remains one of the trusted standards in the wind band literature.

There were always different arrangements distributed to the high schools, but they were always pretty similar to the original like this. Some variations were really slight - some notes in this were different than the version my high school band played. That was about it. And like @ Soprano Cicada said, yes, this song also made me want to throw my flute out the window. After our concert, my dad said this piece sounded "pretty typical for a high school band." Still don't know if that's a compliment or not.

I played it my junior year for concert/sight reading, and I actually had a fun time. Given I played the Bass Clarinet, so it wasn't the hell that the upper woodwinds had, but it was still a really fun piece of music to play. We got superior ratings that year.

Ok so we played this piece (I have the awesome timpani part)
The percussion part with the whip literally says something like "If you don't hit each whip note as loud as you can, you might as well not play them at all."
So our ears are suffering through this piece pretty much every time we play it.
Yesterday during the final rehearsal, Noah (the one who plays the whip) noticed a huge crack in it. We don't have another whip (well we do, but it's not nearly as good or loud, and it's hard to play notes in rapid succession with it.)
"Try to make it so it breaks on the very last note." Sean, the band director said.
We get to the piece during the concert.
The whip lasts three notes, then the end snaps off on the fourth note.
We had to keep going, so Noah just kept playing, and little by little pieces flew off until the very end where we were left with half of a whip, a small pile of sawdust, and several wooden chunks.
It was glorious, we (the percussionists) took a picture together with the whip after the concert.
Oh and we all kept a piece as a memento.

      @DarkMage501 5 років тому +25

Haha the whip part seems to make good stories. Our band had a small hand held whip but it wasn’t loud enough so the band director got a few of us to fashion a 5 foot tall contraption that just slammed two wooden planks into each other. The judges at the evaluations definitely didn’t see it coming :D

I love it!! As a fellow percussionist, those moments are unforgettable! I had the claves part myself. Our high school band also played "Variations on a Korean Folk Song" by John Barnes Chance. Once again, there was no shortage of percussion parts. Our director knew how to take advantage of a 15-member percussion section. Anyway, there was a temple block part on that piece also. At the last performance of that year, the guy playing the temple block part smashed the top temple block on the very last note of the very last performance of the year!! We got new ones the next year. The synthetic fiberglass kind.

EDIT: This comment aged poorly, Covid came right after and we lost everything as we knew, when we finally returned to concerts in Winter of this year. The song was scrapped and I never got the chance to play it as I graduated in June…. What a run though to say the least !

John Barns-Chance wrote this as a tone poem.
The beginning, a conjurer is summoning benign spirits, but then brings forth a malevolent one.
The malevolent entity takes possession of the conjurer, going into a wild and unnatural dance.
A brief pause, the conjurer thinks it's over, only to start again, more violently.
The possession is released, and the conjurer collapses in exhaustion.

I remember playing this piece in the Boulder (Colorado) Concert Band in the 1980s. At the concert, we nearly lost it at one point, but the director merely focused his beat to a fine point, we watched him and focused likewise, and we finished in good form but on the edge of our seats! This is not a piece where you can afford to lose focus! Yet when it's done well, the audience leaps to their feet. :)

We played this piece in high school in the spring of 1988 at State Contest. I can't believe it but I still have the blank cassette that was used to record that spring's show! I was going to comment on how different this version was than the one we played until I saw that this is the "Second Edition". All of those flute runs towards the end are new. I had the all important clave part that kicked off the killer percussion sections. I was a lowly freshman and had never played the claves in a piece. The first day we practiced this our band director came over to show me how to properly hold and play the mighty clave. When I handed him those pieces of rosewood, they were covered in sweat!! From my palms... I just knew he was gonna crack a joke about it but thank God he didn't.

I drew the short straw to join the section, so I never had to learn the flute part, but they made me do the whip.
