I think that the whole "expect to get stabbed when in a knife fight" thing is more of a "prepare for the worst hope for the best" kind of principle. Make sure you don't get stabbed but be mentally and emotionally be open for the possibility of getting wounded. Because surely nobody wants flesh wounds but then again, the hits that hurt the most are the ones you don't see coming

Yes, you work to not get stabbed but it's very important to know that you're fighting for your life and that means you keep going regardless. Humans react badly to what they perceive to be negative outcomes, they surrender in part. You need to know that being stabbed isn't a moment to start folding, it's a probably aspect of the dynamic you're in and something to quickly dismiss.

yeah, that's how it's suposed to be.
can't really administer first aid when the guy is still trying to stab you hahahaha!
but yeah, being stabbed one time isn't immediately the end of the world. Stop the knife, defeat/escape the attacker, then call the authorities and administer first aid.

kreigthepsycho Expectation versus reality. If you aren’t prepared for the very real possibility that you will not only get cut and stabbed, but you may fucking **die** defending a knife attack, you’re kidding yourself. Rule #1 of reality-based self-defence: don’t kid yourself.

They say that because when the guy comes at you he’s moving his arm back and forth like it’s his hand while he’s watching his favorite porno.

neither one of you would be here if you were ever attacked by a violent criminal who knew
how to kill with a knife.
You are cultivating a defensive mind set , that is suicide when faced with a sociopath.
Do you guys teach the difference between "social" vs "asocial" violence? How to tell
    the difference ?
One of you is a cop , there is a big difference between a criminal resisting arrest , and a criminal who has intent on murdering you , do you teach how to tell the difference and how to handle the difference ?
practice every thing that is against mma/bjj rules in a safe manner , (yes there is a safe way of practicing) , and that will give you a better chance.

Like Ryan Hoover this guy likes to hear himself talk and is convinced his way is the only effective way. He espoused some truths any thinking fighter already knows but most of what he espoused came from his ego, not experience.

  • @Fardawg

It isn't about being "okay" with being cut/stabbed (I've never heard a single instructor put it that way), it's about the reality that you very likely will get cut and being prepared to not freak out over it and get killed because you froze.
And let's see some defense against rapid "sewing machine" stabs and very quick slashes that don't stop after one attempt, not just a single slow feed like you showed here where he keeps the knife arm extended like a moron for you to grab. I'm sure you drill for it, but lets see it rather than whatever this was.

The technique seems sound, I have one observation. The knife attack is telegraphed and there’s no attempt to confuse or distract the defender. It should be extremely easy to dictate the pace for the attacker. If the attacker leads with the weapon then Wonderful!.. but Ryan Hoover is making no attempt to retain the weapon. Most “Knife Defense” starts with a demonstration of an attacker leading with the weapon and cooperating with the defender.

Show me a fight that lasts more than 5 seconds where BOTH participants aren’t hit?
Youre gonna fund 1 maybe 2 in 100. And that is why when the dude has a knife you’re gonna get stabbed.
If you shoot him before he’s in range to stab you, you weren’t really in a fight were you?

"Expect to get cut." = "Abandon all hope." Then why learn any tactics against the knife? Carry a gun EVERYWHERE or practice running and leaving your wife, kids, grandma and baby behind when you're attacked by a knife.

Paraphrasing the late Bob Kasper, "You can get cut, but try not to." Or, something along those lines. I've been in two incidents where someone was trying to cut/stab me. One I got knicked in the hand the other not even close to getting cut.

One problem with training knife defence is even when the knife attacker attacks someone and they go at it crazy and fast the person defending never gives it his all and you can't really train that which is a problem let's say you are a really good striker you cant just punch someone as hard as you can when training knife defence well you can but nobody wants to get punch hard Everytime you do knife defence.

Truth! That is the issue. Train with High Gear suits and work up to cut resistance clothing and work with a real blade with moderate speed.

as far as the idea that you are gonna get stabbed, it has a calming effect in some ways. people way over react to a knife because they dont realize the knife hand is the major part of the weapon. If I am sober and a drunk has a knife it is not that big a threat, as he lacks the hand speed to be real serious threat.

Keep on playing training and evolving, only turds and dead bodies go with the flow, and death and taxes are the only absolutes in life, train hard but train smart

3:39 Can you point to a single example of someone (who isn't an insane Bullshido nut you never trust for anything anyway) saying it is "okay" to take a stab or cut in a fight with a knife? It is a big leap from something like "you will likely get cut so you should be ready for it and not count of perfect outcomes" to "you can totally take a stab as part of your defense because it will happen anyway." That is a strawman.
Also, I'm pretty sure I've heard Ryan himself say you are likely to get cut in at least one of his knife videos.

The concept behind..."you are going to get stabbed" is more about starting from a position of disadvantage.
Not relying on the ideal that you can avoid all contact from a position of advantage and awareness.
Is it possible to avoid getting stabbed in a knife fight?
Sure...you can train ways to do that.
Is it a fail safe method for dealing with a knife confrontation?
      That is a different beast.
Preparing someone for the reality that they do not have a knife fight on their own terms is a legitimate formulation of the problem in question.
Teaching that you can always have things on your own terms in a knife is not...imo...necessarily a reality based formulation of the problem.

I want to see someone go full bore at you with some kind of sharpie Or something that will indicate when you got struck. From the videos I have seen of knife attacks. They are brutal, aggressive and chaotic. I don't think anyone thought they were going to let a guy stab them. Its If your knife defense doesn't work perfectly they have yet another change to get you.
