    This is a good move compared to many other fancy suicidal knife disarm techniques commonly taught at martial arts dojos. The key is to control the weapon at the get-go while applying foward pressure to the opponent -- as opposed to just parrying and deflecting and allowing the knife to move freely.

    It's reassuring and really neat to see how a knife defence I came up with, after a lot of experimenting and pressure testing, is so similar to what this German police officer also uses. Convergence of ideas that evolved independently is super interesting!

    • @wattlebough
      @wattlebough 6 років тому

      ParkourEh Any knife defence that involves attempting to grab the attackers wrist when the knife hand is in full motion is bad. It will fail when the attacker pulls back for multiple stabs, because the thumb opening of the grip is facing the attacker and is therefore a weak point that makes it an easy grip to break. It also seriously risks the chance of the defenders thumb dislocating, with an attacker stabbing at full force. I respect the guy, but the technique will fail under pressure.

    • @ParkourEh
      @ParkourEh 6 років тому +4

      Interesting input and I agree to an extent. I always felt like "receiving" a knife stab with the web of the hand (one or two handed) to be non-ideal, although wouldn't the German police instructor's forward pressure help mitigate the issues of pulling back you mentioned? That's what he means by driving forwards to create "zero pressure".
      What I came up with is essentially the same but I blocked the stab with the same-side forearm and cupped the back of the triceps with the cross-side hand (I call this an "arm drag grip").

    • @roundedges2
      @roundedges2 5 років тому +2

      +Iconoclasticnation That is not what he did. You misunderstood. There is no grab of wrist until the arm is stopped moving by the parry inside the elbow and the grab slides the fingers behind the wrist with driving forward making pullback difficult since they are backpedalling trying to maintain balance, and headbutt also happening.

    I like how he teaches drills and repeating those drills over and over again to seer them into the "muscle memory"/subconscious. It seems to me that a lot of instructors don't do that, and then they end up with students that take a really long time to master the principals. It might SEEM like repeating the same thing over and over and over would "take too much time," but really it's the opposite. You end up actually SAVING a lot of time by getting it right the first time, rather than having to correct mistakes later, and those techniques practiced like that really come out clean and crisp. It's like a SNAP, POP!!

      Incorrect. Most people who attack people with a knife are untrained, they are off balance, have poor timing, very predictable and usually drug or alcohol effected. Also, anyone who actually wants to kill you with a knife is angry and not acting with control. I have had 4 of my own students successfully defend against knife attacks and they did not even get a scratch on them. These were attacks in Papua New Guinea and psychiatric institutions. Of course a trained person with a knife is another story. People are the real weapons and everything else is an extension of them. Knives are very dangerous to deal with, there is no doubt about that, but untrained people are useless, armed or not.

      I agree
      But any unarmed knife defense technique is a do or die situation I think?
      Where there is nowhere to run and no improvised weapons available.
      I think this technique is intended to be applied when the knife attacker is in the beginning of he's movement and you control of the knife arm before he can retract.
      It's one of the better techniques I have seen actually.
      But if you know of more realistic knife defense?
      Please give me a link.

      @@wattlebough I feel the same but what is the alternative? Especially when the attack comes in like in the video there is no better move (I know). He is hitting his elbow into his arm and the left arm can protect your arm (which should always be a basic protection) and you still have a probability to catch the arm. Sure it will be hard and dangerous - like each knife defence.

He blocked the knife-hand to deflect the thrust of the knife while moving his body off the knife thrust direction ; and his other hand will grab also come to grab the knife-hand while his body and head continue forward to bulldozed and head bat the attackers breast and head then continue applying the technique- practical!

    nice techniques and lots of polish,, I go as far and the slash to the elbow may be but it is not really slowing down that arm to make it easy to catch.I got to catch that elbow or upper arm to slow that hand down that slash can miss for me to easy, and then catch the wrist. and twist, no form no style just twist and keep twisting till that arm come off.great videos and thanks for the advice.

    Also, one thing I like to do, if the situation is suitable, is to do a deflecting block over the top of the knife hand. Blocking down and across. Then do an immediate and very fast two finger poke to his eyes. If he can't see you, he can't get you. Then once you realize his eyesight is blurred, he is in pain, i.e. grabbing his eyes with his left hand .... RUN LIKE HELL!!!

  • @blue0eyes0knight

    you can disarm from the inside which means less total movements to complete take down and less chance the attacker can swap knife to the other hand. You can turn and crash your back into their front whilst controlling the arm then take down if required. Pressure tested it hundreds of times.

  • @aspenrebel
    @aspenrebel 5 років тому

    Also, good is to strike, with power, to 1) the shoulder joint (alot of nerves there and you may dislocate the shoulder); 2) right on top of the bicep (very painful and you may cause his entire arm to be unusable, he may drop the knife); and 3) right inside of his forearm there are alot of nerves right along the radial bone. If you strike hard, in the right place, it will cause a lot of pain and "tingling", and he will most likely not be able to maintain a grip on his knife. Also, if you are stopping him at his right wrist, on the inside, with your left hand, and his arm is somewhat straight, you can come behind his arm with your right arm (ridgehand) to his tricep tendon. In that way locking out his straight arm.

    That's actually not half-bad; I give you 3/4 of a point (on a scale of 0-10). In the second half of the technique ("going to the outside line"), you should bring your left upper-arm (assuming a right-handed attack) under the attacker's right upper-arm to accentuate the shoulder and elbow joint lock-out.

      Peter Sellers Hi there, an important goal for the attacking training partner is to prevent the defender from getting control of his arm. The only way to register the techniques effectiveness is with the attacking training partner fully resisting the defenders technique. Each of the two participants in the drill must have opposing goals.
      This obviously applies in the more advanced stage of training, after the students have a solid handle on the technique.

    • @aplesmith5544

      I would like to see this drill when the attacker really attacks and tries to stab and slash. Any attacker who knows what he's doing is going to react to the movements of his opponent, not simply carry on with the movement and conveniently stop when grabbed. Having said that, it's a better drill than some of the Krav Maga and Aikido crap that get's posted. And for police officers it could be useful for situational and awareness training, especially once the attackers really attack. But the same good be said for any training defense drills against punches and kicks. And some of the "blocks" for kicks that are on videos are useless and will get you hurt!

    • @Kimchenery

      I would agree that trying to hold onto the wrist alone wont work, even with two hands, but he is controlling the ability of the attacker to pull back for a second attack by maintaining control of the opponents upper arm. Thats the key. With control of the weapon arm you can then attack him with other techniques.

    • @wattlebough

      back take can be prevented by keeping your shoulder squared, making the distance for the opponent to cover greater, giving you more time to react and rotate to counter the back take. it's not black and white like you're describing.

    Some good points in the comments. And while I'm no knife defence expert I know from listening to videos like this..that instead say NEVER go towards the incoming knife. ALWAYS side step first. Getting out of the path. This IS assuming the attacker has presented the knife. Other knife "experts" also say that in many real knife attacks you won't see the knife coming. There are those attackers that know to keep the knife hidden till the last moment. For example when struggling empty-hand...he reaches for the knife when occupied. A very high probability.
    And did they use a real metal knife here? Bit dangerous no?
    There's a "known" Filipino knife "expert" who does UA-cam videos too. Teaches US law enforcement and US military....Doug Merchada (might have messed up the spelling of his last name). Look for Funker Tactical videos. And Kali/knife defence.
    Finally, these types of videos IMHO should NEVER be put on UA-cam where kids will see them and try them. Thinking it's "fun and cool". Bound to happen. Kids will get injured. Might even use real knives.

    What about 2 finger poke to eyes, or any strike to eye? Leopard's Paw straight to front of neck? Drop Kick, i.e. Instep Kick right to groin after you have stopped his attack? If he can't see you, he can't get you; If he can't breath, he can't get you; If he can't stand, he can't get you; If he can't DO, he can't get you. Funny, just the other night I saw this older TV movie, maybe from 1990 or something. This psycho killer got into apt of single mother and 14 yr old daughter. A bunch of scuffling went on for a bit. Then guy had girl in bedroom, standing near open door. The mother stabbed him in the back with a big knife, but didn't finish him. She went to daughter's aid. He got knife out and in his hand, and was going to attack mother. She sprayed him in eyes with pepper spray, so that halted him for awhile. But then, still not able to see well at all, he was slashing around in the air, with his left hand (she had stabbed him back of right shoulder), with great ferocity. Almost most cutting mother a number of times. But she picked up a baseball bat and kept hitting him in the head and body, until he went out the window. Point being, even if attacker is stabbed, blinded, bleeding, in pain, losing use of one arm, he can still be dangerous with a knife by slashing about. 2nd point .... FINISH him!!!!

I don't know if it was mentioned before this drill (if so nvm) that running away is the first thing you should try and that almost always gives you the best chance of survival.

      Jeenius IAMa No, any knife defence that involves attempting to grab the attackers wrist when the knife hand is in full motion is bad. It will fail when the attacker pulls back for multiple stabs, because the thumb opening of the grip is facing the attacker and is therefore a weak point that makes it an easy grip to break. It also seriously risks the chance of the defenders thumb dislocating, with an attacker stabbing at full force. I respect this guy, but his technique will fail under pressure.

    Man most of the comments here are nonsense. This technique where you drive in with the shoulder and trap the arm (same as some wrestling/judo etc. tie ups inside or outside) is one of the only viable ways to keep from getting stabbed with an implement. Is it perfect? No, but it's better than 90% of the made up knife defense out there. People would figure it out real quick just drilling it with rubber knives or markers from a "grab and stab", but then of course they'd have to actually try and do something instead of making dumb "what if" comments on youtube. Very few of these techniques are controversial at all and are similar to what you get when you drill live against someone with an implement, even people with little training. I don't buy the small joint stuff but other than that it's pretty reasonable, which people would know if their agenda was learning stuff and figuring out what's valid instead of talking shit. At least know enough to know what your are criticizing, crikey.

    I can only presume that you will be cut if in a knife fight. Regardless of whatever defensive technique you use. So stay in the fight. That being said if there is any weapon used by an assailant the policeman will call on the radio for assistance from other police.
    If a criminal in America pulls out a knife, or any edged weapon, the policeman will pull his pistol, if available he will use a shotgun.
    Not good to bring a knife to a gunfight.

    • @konradrothenburger7078
      @konradrothenburger7078 5 років тому +1

      actually untrue. has been tested. within 7 meters the average american police man can not get his pistol on target before he gets stabbed.

    • @whomagoose6897
      @whomagoose6897 5 років тому

      @@konradrothenburger7078 : You are correct with the seven meter distance for defence is measured in seconds. In America, we say an assailant can be physically attacking you in 3 seconds at a distance of 21 feet.
      Another observation is that every attack follows the "Rule of Threes." Three shots, three seconds and within 3 yards, or 2.75 meters. Take any shooting course in the USA and you will have instruction to practice this. Most people, police or civilian, cannot defend themselves.
      I've found that the problem is everyone tries to align their sights, front and rear. You cannot defend yourself by trying to get a proper sight alignment in 3 seconds. A better technique is Point Shooting. Point Shooting is extreamly fast. Sights on your pistol are not used. Look at the gunfighters of the American west during the 19th century, the 1800's. The days of Doc Holiday, Frank James and Jessie James. All the revolvers had a single front blade, no rear sight. Yet many were able to hit targets in 1 or 2 seconds. Would like to tell you how to Point Shoot, but not on UA-cam. I'm not going to help the terrorists on this international forum. I often practice this technique. You can make head shots in the blink of an eye from a holstered hand gun.
      As to the marksmanship of American police, many police have a difficult time shooting the broad side of a barn with a shotgun. Why? Because of Affirmative Action. I saw news cast of four policemen in Compton California making an arrest of a violent gang member. They finally stopped this individual. Blocked him with a high street curb and both of their police cars. The gangbanger tried to escape by running over the policemen with a large SUV, a Chevrolet Suburban, possibly killing some of the police. All four policemen started to shoot in their self defense. 120 rounds were fired, only four hits. Two of the police were less than 12 inches from muzzle to target, 30.5cm. The other two were within four feet. 120 shots with only four hits. That's pathetic.
      Not all American police are like this. Notice Los Angeles, California area, New York City, and, Chicago, Illinois are in liberal states with very draconian and extremely restrictive gun laws. Most of the police in these areas never fired a gun until attending a police academy. Then try to become proficient in a few hours of basic instruction. Met a retired NYPD fire arms instructor that told me he was ordered to take the test for firearms qualifications for some of the students by his supervisors. Once again Afirmative Action.

      I would disagree. You must control the weapon arm. Trying to kick them or the knife will bring you forward and potentially onto the knife especially if you slip off the target. From there its about taking out your opponent while maintaining control of the arm.

Never go for the hand or knife ! you just wont catch it fast enough, on that point you are right.

      Kicking his hand or chest seems to be much more efficient and allows you to pull back and run away too.

    • @Kimchenery
      @Kimchenery 6 років тому +1

      So you wake up to a noise and you leave your partner in bed and go out into the hallway to discover someone in your house and they have a knife. Your kids bedrooms are also off this hallway. You gunna run away? Some madman has grabbed your 5yr old kid in the mall and he has a knife, you just going to run away?. You are talking outside a club at night with some mates and some guy stabs you in the stomach and is about to stab you again. You just going to run away and hope you are faster than he is. OK..hopefully I have established that there are times when you might have to face a person who wants to stab you and running just isn't an option. Am i going to try and use those flash knife disarm techniques that I learnt at my club by someone who has never been in a knife fight, those same dumb techniques you see time and time again online? Or maybe I could learn from a long serving Police officer who has faced these situations all the time and has some good insight into what works and what doesn't? If I'm going to attack you with a knife I will hold onto you with my left hand and stab you like a sewing machine with my right. That knife hand is well protected from any kick. Johannes Renninghoff has some good ideas here and probably has a much better idea than most martial arts wanna bes and keyboard experts. If you knew anything about the grappling arts you would know that close is good and gives you much better control of your opponent. Telling people the best defence is just to try and kick the knife out of their hands will get them killed!
