Scientology Versus David Mayo and the Advanced Ability Center

- Mark Fisher and Janis Gillham Grady are joined by Sandy Holeman to discuss who was David Mayo and what happened to the Advanced Ability Center that Mayo set up with other former Scientology senior executives and technical personnel to deliver counseling in competition to Scientology in the mid 1980s.
David Mayo was the Senior Case Supervisor International for Scientology, after years of training and interning with L. Ron Hubbard. He was a Class 12 Senior Case Supervisor and was called upon to audit L. Ron Hubbard in the late 1970s when Hubbard was seriously ill and possibly could have died.
Hubbard turned against Mayo in the early 1980s, based on false reports by David Miscavige, resulting in Mayo being removed from his position, kicked out of Scientology and declared a Suppressive Person, along with many other senior Scientology executives.
Mayo then set up an outside group - the Advanced Ability Center (AAC) - with several other former executives and technical personnel (near Santa Barbara, California) to deliver counseling in competition with Scientology at greatly reduced pricing.
The Advanced Ability Center was then targeted heavily by Scientology and the Religious Technology Center for fair gaming and destruction. The group was infiltrated by spies and the cult took legal actions against the AAC and Mayo himself. The Advanced Ability Center eventually went out of business.
Sandy Holeman and her husband at the time, Roger Barnes, worked at the AAC during part of this time. Sandy tells the story of what happened.

I remember David Mayo was quite famous in the late 70s and early 80s even for public at the mission level! When I was on lines at the Palo Alto mission in 82-83 word was going around that David was accused of being a squirrel. I was thinking WTH??! I used up my auditing there in 83 and I remember getting a cassette tape and letter from AAC explaining everything.

Although I know David Mayo was well loved and respected, and I am very sorry the unfortunate health situations that befell him and his mistreatment from Scientology, I cannot laud him. Of course I never wished him harm, but he was no saint. His actions against me were incredibly damaging to me and my husband. The repair for the damage was no simple or overnight matter. David had conducted and published a terribly false and misleading evaluation on the FSO which was being run by my husband while I was in charge of the flag land base. After giving me a "clean bill" "meter check" and review of my activities and tellling me that I "passed" he then wrote up the evaluation declaring me SP and psychotic and expelled me from the SO. Unfortunately, it took me 5 months to have the epiphany that was needed for me to leave and after leaving it took a whole year to finally realize it was scientology, not just Mayo, not just any particular individual, but the WHOLE cult that was responsible for ruining people's lives and making good people do bad things to good people. I'm sorry David never sorted that out for himself.
I was David Mayo’s Assistant but for most referred to Tech Pages in 1975. I found he was extremely caring for his Pre-clears. Janis nailed and called David Mayo I believe an introvert- he was indeed.
For some reason I saw him many times in the Sea Org Environment when he was married to Merrill he was distant to her by a lot. But, we all were.
David Mayo played himself in the e-meter reads film, but it was himself as Humphrey Bogart.
There was a period when it seemed to me it wasn't a case of regular real scientology vs. the Mayo version. It was two versions who both had a claim, Miscavige had the organization, Mayo had the 'Tech'; It was a question of who would win.
I’ve always wanted to know more about David Mayo. I’ve heard his name mentioned so many times. I love how you put faces to their names and give us a human perspective. The history and timelines are fascinating! Thank you!

You just reminded me of that fun mission David, you and I did to the Fort Harrison with LRH as our Mission Ops to work out the original space planning for the FH and CB before everyone moved from Daytona - the purchases were still in escrow! Your statements about David are so correct - he did what he had to to help people. On the Apollo when Mary Sue was mad at her husband, she too used to go to David to vent about Hubbard as David was someone she felt safe talking to - we all felt safe with him.

Janis, I am not sure if you ever heard this, but one time in a live stream I asked Amy Scobee, "didn't Janis's father invent calmag?"And she corrected me and said that no, it was a particular formulation or drink with calmag in it that he invented. She said your dad's stuff was palatable, but regular calmag was gross, lol.

Was Sammi the sister of Becky Pook? I have the idea that she had blown from the sea org, maybe Bob as well, and I wonder if the spying on AAC was a way for them to get out of being disconnected or declared by the church. Rather than the idea that they were both good sea org members who got sent on this espionage mission. Do you know much about what happened later with the Habers? Still in touch?
Sammy is not related to Becky. Becky's sister was Debbie who married Bill Fosdick. Harvey Haber remarried and lives in Costa Rica. I don't know what happened to Donna.
@@JanisGillhamGrady I believed that Becky and Sammy were sisters. Maybe there was more than one sister? Or maybe I was just misinformed. Do you know anything current about Bill Fosdick? Do you have any recollection of Bob Mithoff or Sammy blowing from Gold before this espionage against AAC?
