If you're a new grad watching this, or most likely a nursing student watching this, don't forget the part where she put in her years in order to easily get travel RN jobs. Experience is everything. 85% of the stuff you're learning in nursing school will go out the window as you re-learn how to do actual bedside nursing at your facility. And so you need to have a little patience, especially if you're younger.

I’m here to say those contracts are pretty much gone and it’s almost just as good to work core… I make $43.50/hr as an RN core when I WAS making $85/hr as a local travel nurse.
I really wish those contracts were still around… God those were so good…

She is an LVN and is apprehensive to get her RN and it’s not the money it’s that she doesn’t think she can do it? I always tell her she is smart enough. So, I will pass on these statistics to help her to get an incentive to get her RN. Thank you for sharing your advice.
We used to have a 5 step clinical ladder where used to work and the percent increase wasn't bad, but then they cut the percentages. I made it to clin-IV, but I decided to go back to school for my master's. I also wanted to get off nights which I did forn7 years. Now I'm back to home health, but I almost wish I would have tried travel nursing. Congrats to you for doing well!

I wasnt financial free as a nurse until my 40’s and I’m still in my 40’s, bought my second house already, earn on a monthly through passive income and got 4 out of 5 goals, just hope it encourages someone that it doesn’t matter if you don’t have any of them right now, you can start TODAY regardless your age INVEST and change your future! Just got into nursing school, can’t wait to graduate and start making a decent pay. Definitely hoping to be a travel nurse for those in between contract vacations lol
Travel nursing pay is amazing but positives of staying at our hospital is paying almost $2000 for one extra shift ($1200 + time and a half). For me this added $120k last year. The stay at my hospital for insurance, $5000 in tuition reimbursement, 2 weeks paid vacation and stability. Plus I love my coworkers. As an ER nurse I plan on climbing the seniority ladder and training for trauma.
Which hospital please… am looking for a better hospital far from travel.

When ever I have looked into California travel contracts I always come out making more per diem staying where I'm at(in Ca.). I think the big money contracts are a thing of the past.
That was very smart - taking advantage of the job market. You have to be young though! It's sad that in our profession (even prior to Covid), you have to change companies in order to raise your salary significantly. Otherwise, you get a raise of 60 cents here or there. I've known coworkers who've gone above and beyond (taking on extra projects, etc.) and they still end up with a meager raise.
Hey M! Thanks for the comment! I will say there are travel nurses whom I work with who are in their 50s! I agree it's sad you have to change co. so much just to get the pay you want :/ BUT I think that also helps keep the market competitive and helps to raise wages for nurses!

It’s sad but for years, people moved for better pay. Nursing and otherwise. It’s probably one of the more empowering things I did in my life. I was tired of seeing administrators yell at my fellow nurses, the toxic work environment and bad pay. Leaving and finding better is better than being stuck. I’ve been there and i said, if it doesn’t work out at least I tried.

The Disparities is really largely related to the cost of living being so diff in all States throughout the country . For example; I live in Wisconsin & the average RN pay is 37 bucks an hour💰; unless you’re A traveller or work through an Agency then it’s much more . However Illinois & Minnesota our sister states pay their nurses A whole lot higher than WI. I heard Southern States like Alabama & Arkansas pay even a lot less. So it really comes down to where you live . Local travelers & out-of-state travelers make so much more. So if you’re looking to make Money as A nurse; gotta travel like everybody else .

I'm a new nurse with just a few months of experience on a med Surg floor. Do you recommend I go into the ICU, ER, or both before doing local assignments?
Also, how far away were your local travel assignments?
Thank you for watching! Great questions. It depends what your priorities are. If you enjoy the ICU or ER, those are always in need but so is med surg. Other specialties do generally pay better than med surg, but I would just recommend pursuing one that you will enjoy. Generally, travel agencies will want to hire you for a position that you have had recent experience with. For my first local travel assignment, it was approximately 45 miles, but for the second it was only 2 miles!
If you can do icu or er you can do anything. ER nurses are much cooler though, burnout rates are super high. If you’re planning to travel, I say ER
Absolutely, Nursing does not pay unless you travel. But, I would loveeeee!!!!! to find a way to travel out of the nursing profession for good.

My bf works at Cedars-Sinai in West Hollywood as regular staff she makes 135k , no other, no on call. She started off travel nursing making 40 an hour but housing certificate was 4k a month , she found apt 2k , pocketed the other 2k tax free

I’ve been a nurse for 14 years. After a pretty burn out year personally, I’m doing travel nursing..honestly the first 8 years of my career, I “capped” or at least that’s what they told me at just $21/hr...it was really horrible. I was in RN school and got divorced while in school several years ago and just had to work as I had two young sons. I am doing travel nursing now as an LPN. I am tired of being tired. I want to live well and be paid fairly. Best decision I made. Thank you for sharing
Horrible is an understatement, even back then it wasn’t enough..I will never live/work in Florida or south as long as their pay is unviable
Thanks for sharing! That's crazy that they told you that you capped. It's crazy how so many employers don't understand inflation. They're willing to increase their prices, but don't recognize that their employees purchasing power is deflating as everything else is increasing. It's a great way to get people to leave.
@@Katherine_Ann well, it was before the inflation. It actually paid more than other jobs in the area. It was just demoralizing. Some people could live on it bc they had two incomes..but I was tired. Working night and day and had two sons. I had to make a choice (long story short.) I enjoyed your video bc it reminded me of giving yourself a chance. You never know, life can be better, all it takes is one decision. I moved out of that state and I’m better for it.

What is it like traveling with kids? How does that work?
Love this video. Nurses have all the education and resources they need to make a decent income. They can invest and make more too. Why would their income ever be something left up to others is my question after watching this. Could their potential be limited by references? Their environment? Haters? 🤷♀️ Its scary to think that someone with the qualifications and experience to be a nurse would not have a decent income.

How do u apply for local travel nursing in socal? I thought you need to live 60 miles away from your assignment to get housing stipend? Or $112 is the rate only per hr without including housing?
As a local traveler you dont get a housing stipend, some companies will give you a food stipend though which is helpful since it's not taxed. I'm not sure if CA had a state rule about local travel nurses but normally it's up to the hospital. You just apply the regular way!

Thank you for watching and for your question! Generally it's a combination of experience, further education specific to your field such as a certification and certain requirements that you have to meet. They may be dependent on your employer.
It also depends on what facility you work. Not all are created equal.

Wow, you're really looking ahead! There's a variety of specialties that you can do in travel nursing, so I would pursue one that you enjoy first. ICU nurses and ER nurses are always in demand and pay well, especially during the pandemic.
What are you doing for health insurance?
I have been a nurse since 1983. The old days were hard but so much better than the healthcare workforce today. Todays healthcare setting is not friendly to our “seasoned and tenured” nurses.

Hey, great question. Fortunately, my husband has health insurance for us. Many travel nursing companies will offer health insurance, but you could also look into medical sharing programs which can be reasonable!

That I am not sure but travel nursing is through and agency but also now through the hospital systems themselves.

problem is the broken system in US, they can pay more $ on a traveler nurse than their normal resident nurse same job description... what's the difference??? American created two tier system in their healthcare after covid. Alot of our colleague question the management they hire so much traveler with the same role as them but higher pay, isn't that fair?
It's a little more complex than that. Staff nurses should definitely be paid better, but travel nurses don't have the job security and often not the same benefits offered to them.

I'm an RN working in home health making $23/hour. And I have over 30 years experience in cardiac, surgical, and physical rehab. I couldn't stand the office politics of the hospital which is why I settle for what I do now for so little. I'm sick of nursing tbh and just want out. The pay inequity is nothing short of abuse.

In Alaska you make double with 3-5 years. With 20 plus years you’d be making WELL over 6 figures

What is a local traveling nurse? I have not heard of that term.
It's like true travel nursing but without having to travel far! I commuted 1 mile to my last travel assignment but was paid like a regular travel nurse. This is not as common anymore and now hospitals have their own "travel nurses" instead of through a third party agency.
35 or even 40$ per hr is the new 10$/h..you cant get a decent house..and keep up with expenses..if you have kids , thats it..just daycare can be up to 3k..per month..

I work as a school nurse and I would like to try travel nursing- though do you need to have yrs of med surg experience? Are there travel nurse positions that are in other nurse disciplines? Your videos are great and helpful!
There are travel positions of all kinds! Infusions centers, L&D, med surg, OR, PACU, cath lab... you name it! You must (should) have recent experience in the type of travel you want to go into. It will be hard to find a job if you don't have recent experience in that particular field.
What does it mean to level up as an RN?
Each hospital (normally) has different levels of RNs. Lowest level being a new grad and then highest levels being nurses who have done the work to get to the next level. You are still doing the same work but have added responsibilities with each level. These include education projects, sitting on committees.. ect.
@@Katherine_Ann So if you want to focus more on the person and less on "Projects and committee's" you can stay at level 1? and do they look down on you for doing so?
The downside of travel nursing is you are a 1099 employee, almost no benefits. And you have to go new places every few weeks. I have managed to almost double my income while staying on and working ICU on a weekend program and also working one on-call shift a week. So, I have consistently made a 70k or 80k base double to 120 to 140k per year for the last 15 years with full benefits. I have a total of 29 years in ICU. I plan to work another 7 to 12 years and retire at age 60 or 65 having achieved financial independence.

If you want the short answer: She went from being an RN Level 4 making over $36.25/hour, and then quit and found a job in travel nursing for $112/hour doing med surg nursing, then back to a slightly lower rate at $75/hour (over $150,000 per year). You can work for 6-8 months and then afford to take a vacation. Give her video a like! I don't like waiting for an answer but she was thorough!

Hi Maria! I personally do not have medical through my travel company as I am under my husbands insurance. And there is no definite amount for each state, every hospital is different!
Our hospital doesn't have any rn 1-2-3 stuff lol

Hi Shameka, thanks for your question. At the hospital I was at, it is essentially a grade or ranking system based off experience, education or certifications. Generally, the higher you are, the more you are compensated.

Hi there! A local travel nurse is the same thing as a true travel nurse you just stay local to your area though! We do the same thing as a real travel nurse, we are just paid and taxed a bit differently. I currently work at a hospital 1 mile away from my home and take 12 weeks contracts at a time there.

Hey Eva! Some hospitals are doing internal travel nursing but really that just means its a different structure to being a staff nurse. True travel nursing and going through a third party or agency is the "real" way to be a travel nurse and you are not a nurse of that hospital, you're contracted.

That's a great question. It all depends on what works for you and your wife. Can she travel with you? I chose local travel nursing because I wanted to be with my husband every night.
@@Katherine_Ann She is a full time pre school teacher. We have no children and feel right now would be the best time to try it out before we start a family. I can bring her with me, but will have to sacrifice a source of income if she won't be working.. Also, I cannot imagine local positions would be open for MT's like for nurses.

Yes, they offered benefits such as health insurance, although I didn't take it due to being on my husband's. I believe I even negotiated a higher rate due to not accepting their benefits.

Hi, thanks for your question. It can all depend on your contract, the agency you're working through and the hospital you're working at. I was not receiving a tax free housing stipend like traditional travel nurses do, but I was receiving a tax free food stipend. My rate may have also been higher at some points, but I was obviously taxed more.

@@Katherine_Ann The pay is good but working in LTC does not make me happy mostly because of the patient to nurse ratio being ridiculous. Having over 20 patients to take care of is just insane and unsafe. Unfortunately at hospitals the pay is significantly lower, I live in Massachusetts and I am pretty sure RN's are making in the 30-40 hr dollar range at the hospitals. Things changed alot in nurse since covid with these nursing contracts paying much more. I cannot blame many travel nurses that are going back to be 'regular' staff at hospitals and other places and wanting to quit the profession, because going from making over 80hr an hour to make less than 40 is tough and demotivating even loving the nursing prof

Hey Linda! Yeah that is not actually true! I thought the same thing, my recruiter explained it to me and gave me the website to look it up on my own. Local travelers can get food stipends just not housing.

What about health insurance?
I am fortunate enough to be under my husband health insurance but there are plenty of travelers who don't use the travel agency insurance and just get their own through companies like Medishare

I did travel briefly at a hospital not too far from my home. The pay was great, but the staff was very friendly - but only to each other. They would not help me if I needed someone to witness a waste of a med or help me boost someone in bed. The aides only helped the other nurses. It was AWFUL. And of course, every single shift, I was given what seemed like every trainwreck on the floor. I thought it just seemed that way until I started noticing that my patient's rooms were split up, like if there was a less acute patient in my "row" of patients, another nurse was assigned that patient and I had another fresh post-op isolation pt with multiple drains, wound care, trach/suctioning, frequent carotid ultrasounds, NG tube, q 2 hour pain meds, etc. across and down the hall, away from my other patients! And this was med-surg!! I'm the type that goes into everything super friendly and helpful to others, looking at us as a team and looking forward to getting to know people. Do YOU feel like you get the cold shoulder from people because you are making more than they are for doing the same job and/or feel like you are given difficult assignments on purpose? I have heard this a lot about travel nursing. What they don't seem to realize is that it ultimately puts the PATIENTS at risk, as it was almost impossible to get to everyone in a timely manner. At the very least, the patients I'm sure were not thrilled (although I was lucky they seemed to be very understanding).
Hey Ellie! Thank you for sharing that, I have heard this same complaint from other nurses as well. I personally don't feel like I've had this issue at the hospital I'm currently at, and I believe that's because most of us are local travel nurses who have been there for almost 1 year or more. I think we have been more so welcomed in like "true" staff.
The last facility I was at, it was the same thing. The ER overflow area was staffed by travelers and maybe 1-2 true staff nurses. We would make the assignments ourselves actually (it was chaotic😂) so I believe that helped prevent from all of what you're talking about from happening.
My girlfriend is doing exactly what you did and this is her 3rd contract. She has changed providers each time. Is there a certain provider that you've researched or have work for that you like? Have you found any that have paid a completion bonus or have decent medical benefits? Thanks
@@bronc1976 Hey William! I did not enjoy working with AYA, although I know some have. I am currently with SPIRE which is a local agency to the ATL area, I do really enjoy them. I have a smaller completion bonus than I had with AYA but they are better to work with. I currently get a $300 competition bonus. Insurance wise, I cannot speak to that, as I am under my husbands.

Hey, thank you for your question. A good starting point is using various job boards, travel agencies will often post jobs on them. You can then look at an agency's website and see more contracts being offered!

Way too low. We should all be starting at $50...easy.
Also, never heard of leveling up as an RN. We definitely do not have that here in Mich.

@Maria Bryant I made a couple of investments but my investment in forex and crypto has been yielding good profits and I don't think of stopping anytime soon. Investment is key.
Stock, forex, crypto currency, Real Estate, hedge funds and ETFs are good investments as well 😊

This video is a testament to how bad the system is. Execs paying themselves a million a year have no trouble with this, but won't staff a medical unit above slave labor. Grab the dough while you're young, kids. Your brain and body will not last under the barrage of weak middle managers and new computer systems every two or three years, not to mention idiotic patients and families demanding hotel services (fully supported by executives, btw).

I started at $62/hr right out of nursing school.
$50 should be rock bottom minimum. $70-$100 is the only serious pay range with experience.

Yes, and more importantly, it was a union site. I want nurses to know their worth. If healthcare billing is just as high in other states, they should be paying nurses fairly. I am glad the nurse in the video got to excellent pay levels, but she did not even know she was being underpaid in her early years.

Some people made me earning money as a registered nurse an issue of race and sex....how trifling is that? Nursing is not about that.
This concept is so damaging to the future of nursing. It makes me so sad to see young nurses promote this toxic industry. Firstly, it has fractured the team comradery which maintains mental health wellness if nurses, retention rates, enhanced communication between staff, and so much more. Secondly, travel nursing is a very big ask for nurses with families which accounts for a majority of millennial (and adjoining generations to a lesser extent) so these nurses are very often working as core staff which requires them to have increased responsibility to shuffle travelers in and work many shift with strangers surrounding them. Thirdly, hospitals are losing enormous amounts of money from hiring travel agencies to staff them while not investing in the cheaper and more sustainable/healthy culture and organizational mission values by using that money to attract more dedicated staff for the longer term. Thirdly, from personal experience, it contributes significantly to pandemic and post pandemic mental health issues/burnout due to work in a more isolated environment with the rapid turnover of travelers which is likely a contribution to the depletion of the workforce too. Fourthly, I have seen it influence a sense of management and HRs gravely inflated indifference to nurses as human beings. Sad. Lastly, I see seemingly very young nurses as well as nurses not far from retirement in this role most often and they are both poised with the money hungry mindset, whereas, nurses in between these age groups are more in positions where they need to or greatly care to settle in one place because building their family is their sole priority. This video broke my heart because the enegery that travelers put into building their wealth should consider our code of ethics first and foremost and look towards the future of nursing along with our colleagues so that we can be a part of building that sustainable nursing workforce in the near future (and projections for that are more bleak than climate change) instead of being greedy about the massive influx and shift brought on by covid.
Hi Jiby, thank you for sharing your thoughts on this topic. I think some of your points do have validity to them, but I would disagree with the overall premise. I worked as a staff nurse for years, I view travel nursing as a way to be compensated fairly for my labor, experience, and expertise. It also has provided great flexibility for my family. I don't think the travel nursing industry would be nearly as prominent if healthcare facilities would compensate their employees fairly and provide better work environments. There's nothing wrong with wanting to be compensated fairly, and it would be unwise to not pursue opportunities that pay better if they are congruent other priorities. I agree with you that some individuals start travel nursing just because of the money, but you could say that about the nursing profession or other professions in general. I could also argue that travel nurses fill a critical void that would otherwise cripple a healthcare facility. Just my thoughts, thanks again for watching!

If anything, I would say it's unwise not to pursue adequate pay, otherwise you're not stewarding your time well and essentially saying you're not worth it.
