Wow.. they were man handling the young adults. They had the right to dance and be happy. At my son's high school over half the students danced across the stage. Valedictorian, salutatorian, and all.
I have NEVER been to a graduation where everyone’s name is read like a speeding bullet. Not have I EVER been to a graduation that didn’t let the kids celebrate on stage. UF is wacky and it’s the last time I’m ever going to one of their graduations again. There was no need for that marshal, there was no need for such a fast pace, and there was no need for them to just give the students 2 seconds to celebrate.
Sasha Harney That’s why I’m glad they changed the format. People should be allowed to do a little dance or celebration as they cross the stage (not longer than 2-3 seconds of course), just for all the hard work they put in to make it to graduation. The new format should allow for this since their won’t be so many students at one graduation anymore.
They have worked so hard their whole life let them be proud of themselves and have a standing ovation instead of moving them along I would have slapped the guy if that happened
This was my graduation and I was very displeased with the way the staff (the one usher particularily) was handling the situation. Many of my fellow classmates (of ALL ethnicities) felt that they had been rushed and pushed unto the stage by the older man (not seen here) as well as this usher pacing us to walk across. This was not a race issue. It was felt by everyone. It just so happens that the students who were taking the longest to celebrate while walking across (which I think they should be able to in a polite manner for all the work we've accomplished) were African American. White and Asian students who stopped to take 2 second selfies were getting manhandled as much. I understand you've got to keep the line going or we would have been there all day, but this was not the way to conduct this event.
Wtf do you mean it’s about safety?! I agree this wasn’t about skin color but with him manhandling some of these students, someone could have gotten hurt if they tripped. Anything could have happened
I feel something should be done about the marshall or whatever he is cause he was just out there on everyone. Soon as someone had pushed him back then they would have been wrong when he's the one wrong. Let them young men and women celebrate and be happy they accomplished what someone may have told them they wouldn't...SMDH
2:16 vs 4:37 ---- I think the ones dancing through were all a part of the same fraternity which is what the news report pointed out and that fraternity did seem to get rough housed a lot more than everyone else. Although ya he did escort "almost" everyone who didn't move fast enough, just not in the same way that specific frat got moved and a lot of them were doing the same thing.
Attended my daughter’s diploma ceremony at Notre Dame last month. Families cheered, students smiled with joy as they received their diplomas, kept the line moving and ended the ceremony ahead of time. I'm sure they partied, but "after" the ceremony was over.
I understand wanting to keep things smooth and synced up, so when the student's name is called that same student is on stage. So say the names slower. Take a breath in between names. It's not an unreasonable request for the students to get a few seconds. Especially considering they'll allow some of these speakers to drone on forever but when they finally get to the part that everyone is there to see, they're suddenly in a rush. Makes no sense.
Was this dude even fired? Was he forced to issue a public apology, not just the school apologizing on his behalf? Each one of those students touched should have got a lawyer if they already didn't. That's crossing the line big time. These students have worked hard to have this day where they should be able to release. They should have the right to have a little fun and not be physically forced off the stage. UF failed these kids.
