Speaking only for myself, I follow you specifically for your home theater audio expertise--particularly sound iso, acoustics, calibration, and the deeper technicalities of speakers and subwoofers. As for content I would love to see more structured content from time to time. The Q/A format is awesome, but once you get to a certain point as a hobbyist, you have to watch hours of content to glean one or two new nuggets of info. Something like a five-part walkthrough of how to do an audio calibration using Audyssey MultEQ-X, DLBC, minidsp, etc. What filters are available, how they work, when you would use them, etc. Could even do a basic version for free on YT and use it to market a more advanced paid version. I've heard you address this request before by saying to do it to your standards would be a massive undertaking, but I don't think it needs to be as deep a dive as I think you must have had in mind when you said that. I'm thinking the objective would be less to fully train someone to do a $10,000 calibration that you would do and more to just be able to do a better job than some local hack would do. Hell, I'm so sure this would be popular I'd pay your hourly rate to make it as a work for hire. If you want to make videos on other topics just as a creative outlet, you should absolutely do it. While I don't have an active channel, I have put some time into researching it for my business, and it seems that the conventional wisdom is to put off-topic content on a second channel to avoid it hurting your main channel's growth.
100% on MultEQ-X, MINIDSP, etc. Chiefly, I would love to see a tutorial regarding calibrating a system utilizing the moving mic method in conjunction with Mult EQ-X!
Given AV is where you’re an expert, I think best to keep it focused there. Would love more tutorials on room acoustics/measurements for DIYers, product reviews, as well as interviews/discussions with other industry experts. Thanks!
As I’ve said elsewhere. That will always remain the main focus. This other stuff would just be sporadic and because I want to type of thing. It would be more about a general appreciation for a given technology.
Hi Matt….. I like the AV stuff. Perhaps some input on bang-for-the-buck equipment (especially speakers). We all know you have an amazing system in your room but there are plenty of us that have limited budgets but still want as high performing system as possible within lower budget levels.
Could you provide REW tutorials or guidance for setting up speakers that are running full range with LFE routed to them, while also incorporating subwoofers into the system?
If you could do tutorial videos for REW and Minidsp (basics about time alignment, phase alignment, IR alignment, sub to main integration, house curves etc...), I would really appreciate it. Also, how to make sure that we are not pushing our subs or clipping, so what are the methods to make sure that we are still in the safe zone, while getting the most out of our equipment.
I don’t know, I would say stay with your expertise especially if you care about UA-cam and the numbers/statistics. No matter what we (usual visitors) think or say it’s easier to lose an audience than gain one. So unless you’re satisfied with the channel and the numbers it generates I wouldn’t go for other videos/a 2nd channel.
I think everyone is waiting for some proper tutorials instead of other topics or answering those very specific questions (which is still enjoy a lot). There are hundreds of AV related topics you could cover.
HT is why I tune in. So unless you're getting bored with it, i would stick with that primarily. I think showing different ways to tweak audio settings would be helpful.
HT and AV will always be the main focus. I just may do other topics from time to time simply because I want to. Figure you all can tune those out if you don’t care. I, like much of my audience, like technology period. I like all kinds of technology and I appreciate good engineering. Whatever it may be. If people absolutely hated these other topics to the point it was dramatically hurting the channel, I would probably launch other channels if I really wanted to keep up those topics.
I'm here to learn about home theaters, both audio and video. There's so much to cover and you're doing an awesome job covering complex topics in short video. Maybe an occasional short video on another topic would be interesting, but in general I would stick to the home theater. If you want to cover something else, a new channel is probably a better option.
I enjoy your engagement in the comment section just as much as the videos. Of the videos I like the bass and subwoofer subjects the most, maybe because it’s so hard to get right.
I would rather you not do topics other than home theater, but that's me just being selfish because home theater is what I'm most interested in. I can just ignore the ones that don't appeal to me.
Stay on theme, but you need to do more than just talking head. Why don't we see more of your home theatre rather than just behind your head? I know this sounds critical, but you did ask.
Trying different topics is a great idea, because ... you're really good at boiling down the essential aspects of a topic, doing realistic analysis of pros and cons, quantifying where appropriate and analyzing results ... So you can take those skills in a lot of directions with lots of tech topics. I also would be interested in deeper dives into ways to use REW, Dirac, etc. beyond the basics. What tricks and methods have you developed to deal with unusual or more problematic situations. Thanks again for all the great content!
A friend of mine got a good deal on 2024 Tesla 3 with dual motor as it was the showroom vehicle. He gave a tour of it and I was quite impressed on how loud it can play with all those speakers. Then we stepped outside, he pressed a button suddenly the car started playing music outside with its external subwoofer, lights flashing, trunk opening and closing plus the windows rolling up and down. It was fun to watch something out of the ordinary when it comes to vehicles.
Their software engineers like to create silly little “why nots”. I think it’s great. Even if it’s not really needed. I don’t love the car stereo but it’s not bad. The bass needs work in my opinion. I plan to measure it in more detail and document wha to find.
“The algorithm” definitely wants you to stick to one topic; you may lose visibility and thus subscribers if you branch out. I’m interested in content based on your professional expertise and I’m not sure I’d watch anything that wasn’t at least related to HT acoustics. That said, I would love it if there were some car soundproofing/ road noise content that weren’t someone trying to sell me dynamat. I saw some other comments on the Q&A format and I’ll throw in some random thoughts: - I think it’s great that you’re answering questions but sometimes the answers could be more structured. Folks dropping off halfway through can’t be good for your numbers. - sometimes you’re having to guess about what the intent of a question was, or some detail; why not ask follow up questions before shooting a video? - I know you get a lot of questions that are too specific to make a general video about but I think case studies would be a cool area for you to move into. I know that your customers usually don’t want to share their rooms, but why not take a few hours to evaluate a viewer’s room and give them “top 3” things to try that would improve it, whether that’s equipment or layout or treatment. Like a more helpful “roast my setup”. You are one of the only HT UA-camrs with actual knowledge who doesn’t just spout hearsay and shill Valencia, kaleidoscope, zidoo, and Arendal. I would love to see your channel grow and cut through that noise. I was excited to see you on Shane Lee’s channel and disappointed that he didn’t seem interested in taking your advice.
I’d like more videos on how to improve our HT/2 channel audio systems and how to get the most out of the rooms that we have. Specifically for me, I need help on exactly what to do to treat the room for absorption and diffusion. After this, I want to improve my speaker setup and add up to 3 subs to the 1 that I have. Then I want to add DIRAC LIVE and get everything working as well as possible. I appreciate your excitement about your new car but I am watching you for your knowledge and experience about Acoustic design and engineering. 😊
My feedback would be: if you want to do make those videos, make them. I'm subscribed mainly for the AV/acoustic stuff but I think the car acoustic/sound floor stuff would be interesting
I like the idea of making a dinner while talking shop with friends and peers. I loved my old BMW but they can be a giant money pit, especially with the new electronics. I would be curious to hear what you think of the cost savings and reliability of the Tesla after having owned it for a bit. I will say that the noise floor is significantly lower on my current car vs my last one (both gas) but I think that has more to do with the insulation and tires. My engine is actually louder on my current car when outside than my previous car but I can’t hear it as much when inside.
We, unfortunately, cannot do that. We tried once by having my parents buy my car, at the time, off lease and taking it. We lasted a week before we unwound the deal. I have to do day trips and sometimes multiday trips out of town. We thought about renting. But it was too expensive to rent a car for how often we need two cars. In addition to my work trips, we also have numerous events where both kids need to be somewhere else with a parent at the same time. My older at soccer and younger at swim. Something like that. So ultimately we still need two cars.
Home Theatre/Audio is my interest, and really enjoy your take on this. I would like to see more measurement/tuning videos, if you wanted to expand beyond talking heads.
If we wanted to watch Tesla and cooking videos, we would have already found them elsewhere. Stick with your expertise and keep this channel limited to audio and video content. If you desire to explore unrelated topics, create a second channel.
My preference are videos to make home theaters work better, such as calibration tutorials, equipment, etc. Congrats on your new EV. I recently traded in my Porsche Macan S with a little used Volvo XC40 Recharge EV. Its horsepower and torque is much more powerful than the Porsche and it behaves much better in the snow and much better as a daily driver. Plus, it was cheaper. Granted, it’s not a head turner like a Porsche, but I enjoy driving it much more! For families with >= 2 cars, having one EV and one gas car makes a lot of sense, where EV is used for in-town driving and gas out of town. I don’t take my EV on long trips (I prefer to stop when I want to and not when the car needs to). But for on town driving, my XC40 EV is much fun than my gas Volvo XC90. I’m still waiting for Dirac ART for my Marantz AV 10 processor. But, my Volvo XC40 EV has Dirac Unison! 😊. Dirac, and the low noise floor of an EV are especially nice.
The only two “long distance” trips I do have only one or two logical stopping places and they have super chargers there. So it works for me. If I drive to Miami, there are dozens of places to stop between me and Naples, and dozens of places to stop around Miami/Ft Lauderdale. But there is only one place to stop between those two and it’s a good place to stop. My other long trip is around Orlando area. Same thing. Dozens of super charger locations around Orlando. Dozens around Tampa. Only a couple between those two areas. So it’s ok. I am fine with the restriction for that kind of drive. I don’t know how I would feel trying to drive it from Tampa to NY. I’ve done that trip in a gas car, and yeah stopping where you want is nice. Not sure how that would work with a Tesla. It might require too many stops for too long.
@ Yeah, Tampa to NY would be quite the challenge, especially if you’re traveling with kids. A couple that I know have two Teslas, and when they go on long trips, they wind up renting a gas car since it’s too stressful with young kids. But, for some people, the journey is as much of the vacation experience as the destination, and find it’s gratifying to go on an EV car!
Personally I wouldn't be interested in other topic videos but if it's something you'd enjoy then why not. I honestly think you channel would grow a lot if you started adding more structured videos with visuals & talking over/explaining diagrams etc (maybe getting a guest on now & then). However I do also realise this sort of thing would be more time/work so may not be the right way forward depending on your goals.
Wait, are you saying there are better ways to measure noise than a random DB app on your phone! 😂 I’m just about to tie the knot on an VW ID.4 lease and finding useful information on noise has been hard (the car in comparison to others, what tyres to choose, the effect of double glazed glass). I don’t know how useful the suggested data on the stock Tesla would be, at least without comparing to other cars, but if you went on a journey to sound proof the car, try out different tires etc. that would be super interesting. Personally the acoustic glass upgrade was not available on my trim and without the ability to modify the car, I just opted to have the dealer facilitate “acoustics” foam treatment of the underside and wheel arches as a part of the lease. Not sure it will do mush, but anecdotally some people found it reduces tire noise. I might put some dampening in the doors at some and hope no one notices, when I have to give the car back 😅
I would be curious what the dealer did. You can’t just coat the car in foam. But they may have some kind of spray on treatment. Doubt that would do much. So I have a way to do some comparisons. A friend just bought the Ford Mustang Mach E with the B&O sound system. They have the premium interior and active noise cancelation. I can drive a course in that car and measure noise. Then do the same in the Tesla and measure noise. Finally do the same in our van and measure the noise. That gives three data points. Should be a valuable comparison. The upgrades idea could be a next step but I want to make sure anything I do won’t damage the car or make things not work correctly. Most of the stuff looks like it’s unlikely to do anything. The stuff that seems most promising looks risky. So I want to be totally sure of what I am doing. I doubt I would test tires my car requires larger wheels to fit over the brakes. The factory size is an unusual size and there are not a lot of EV specific low noise options. The Pirelli I have is the only one available in my size at the moment. I would have to switch to a different size wheel and tire to try options.
@@PoesAcoustics Where I live it's common to treat the undercarriage of cars with an anti rust treatment, though most sane people would not pay for that on a lease! Most anti rust treatment vendors also have the option of this acoustic foam, as an add on or separate treatment. Like I said, I don't expect it to do much, but it's a $10 add on pr. month, so why not? :-) Regarding upgrades, I've found a local company (just a couple of people), that do car audio, dampening and are also long time hifi dealers. So that would give me some level of confidence, that they can at least hear what their solution are doing or not 😛 According to them, it's a lot about controlling resonance and filling hollow spaces where sound can build up (e.g. doors, the need open vents to the outside of the car, so water can drain). Regarding tires I've narrowed my all season EV tire search (235/60/18R/3T) down to Hankook IVO AS and Goodyear Electricdrive, the later likely being the strongest contender for noise. Both have foam installed in the tire, which is supposed to help a bit. Looking forward to seeing if you do anything in this space. I would personally be all over it, comparisons or not. Cheers 🙂
I should be meeting some major car audio competitors at a up coming event. They will give a series of talks on car audio and I am giving a talk on home theater engineering. There may be opportunities that arise from that.
@PoesAcoustics nice. I have sound deadening in all my doors and added a second layer of weather stripping but still get a lot of road noise. Going to do under coating next. I get a decent sound stage on my dash board with the sub seemingly coming from the front even though it's in the back. Use an Alpine Optim8 for time alignment and automatically set fir filters. It prevents any nulls and conforms to my target curve nicely.
@matt Poes long as its nothing about being snobby . Towards people on budget a/o being rich or about what's better cause you have had a bad experience . Other than that don't care. I'm looking for av not cars .
@13MarkFox ha ha nice but when people make it seem to not have a low to rich budget . Who are you?? Path of exile 2 = very expensive budget . Lol was this supposed to be an insult??? Your not Poes . I would have probably heard something a little better than that from him.
I love gas and diesel. Tesla is the best car I have ever owned. We have 30k miles on a Y and I have only used a supercharger maybe 8 times and it was super fast. I charge to 60% daily and raise it as needed for trips. The road noise is louder in tesla because there is no engine or exhaust noise. Go for it if that’s what you want to do.
Teslas are the best in the electric car business. The problem is the resale value is horrible for EV's these days. I work for a large online vehicle wholesaler. We sell about 1k cars a week at auction. Teslas make great sense for 2nd cars, or people who fly rather than drive long distance. For me, I enjoy driving them, but they are not for car guys. They have 0 personality, and horrible interiors. Now that's an opinion from a "car guy". Good luck with it. However you won't need it. Of all the Teslas I've bought from customers not one mentioned ever having an issue with it. Enjoy
Tutorials on how to make our system better
I just liked my own comment (as ridiculous as that is) because I REALLY hope we are going to see this.
@ts6640 Haha, whatever it takes.
More hands on, coupled with all the theory you teach. Thank you a lot Matt!
Some HT construction videos would be cool.
Even in first few minutes we are learning and getting to know you more Matt. Dinner party idea sounds great!
Yeah the AV dinner party is moving forward. In fact Nikita, you are in the short list for an invite to one of these.
Hi Matt….. I like the AV stuff. Perhaps some input on bang-for-the-buck equipment (especially speakers). We all know you have an amazing system in your room but there are plenty of us that have limited budgets but still want as high performing system as possible within lower budget levels.

Regarding upgrades, I've found a local company (just a couple of people), that do car audio, dampening and are also long time hifi dealers.
Cheers 🙂
Big fan, but naaah... your nickname whether you know it or not is Home Theater Jesus, not Iron Chef Jesus.
I would love some car audio stuff. I've put a few grand in my car audio system.
It prevents any nulls and conforms to my target curve nicely.
audio only plz
"sounds" good to me....

Stick to Accoustics please mate!
@matt Poes long as its nothing about being snobby . Towards people on budget a/o being rich or about what's better cause you have had a bad experience . Other than that don't care. I'm looking for av not cars .
Fortunate don't budget? Snobby = people with more capability, expertise and made better choices than you? Clarification please.
Enjoy
