  • Toyota just teased the all-new 2025 Toyota 4Runner... they showed a small photo of the back hatch. The new 6th Generation Toyota 4Runner will be a stunning SUV no doubt. I have full faith in Toyota to deliver an exceptional looking vehicle. The 4Runner has become an iconic mid-sized SUV in America since it's debut in 1984. Having owned several 5th gen 4Runner TRD Pros, I can confidently tell you, it's the perfect SUV (for most people). I am nervous, however, that Toyota will do the same thing they did to the new 2024 Toyota Tacoma... first they'll slap the turbocharged 2.4L 4 cylinder motor in it, THEN move production from Japan to Mexico. The new Tacoma and new 4Runner will be built on the same TNGAF global body on frame design, and they'll undoubtedly share the same exact powertrain: 4 cylinder and 8 speed auto. What do you think? You think they'll move production to Mexico?
I personally LOVE my Japanese built vehicles. They always have top-notch quality and fit and finish. You can tell the Japanese take tremendous pride in building their vehicles. With Toyota making room for the new 2024 Land Cruiser and other vehicles in Japan, you can't help but wonder if they'll do this. The new Lexus GX550 is a part of the equation too. PS: The license plate saying JUS 282 certainly means something but I'm not digging that deep lol.
Let me know your thoughts. Do you plan to buy the all-new 2025 Toyota 4Runner? Will you wait for the TRD Pro or Trailhunter trims? Or will you get the last of the TRIED and TRUE 5th gen 4Runners? The 2024 model.
Thank you for watching as always, I sincerely appreciate the support. If you found ANY value in this video, please consider Liking and Subscribing. Your support means a lot! Thank you.

I have recently purchased a 2024 Toyota 4Runner. And I can honestly say I appreciate not having all the fancy tech. I was looking for the absolute, best reliability SUV and they have it. I will never purchase the first year of a new platform and if I can help it, I do not want twin turbo or battery pack. More stuff to go bad that cost you a lot of money. My older model might use more gas but I’m OK with that because I know I will get many years of worry, free reliability.

I have owned and driven Toyotas for 34 years. Quite a few of those Toyotas were Land Cruisers that got used really hard, even before overlanding became popular in North America I was pushing my 60’s and 80 pretty hard entrusting their rugged durability (as well as my upkeep) to get me back to civilization. Toyota has this principle of manufacturing where the do continuous refinement and improvements over the life time of production. Thats what traditionally has made a big difference in terms of build quality and reliability. They were never cutting edge, their “tech” and powertrains were usually old school by choice. You chose a 4wd Toyota for their use of proven drivetrains and not for glitzy tech. These days every manufacturer takes the route of fancy, complicated tech to wow buyers but are creating this perfect storm of screens and garbage that will be lucky to last ten years then provide the owner with a headache of functions they can’t use or access because of failed screens. This and the jump to forced induction… yada yada, yeah turbo charging has been around for a long time, it’s gotten more reliable and better…. BUT…. No matter what they will not last as long as a good NA engine. They just won’t… and turbos won’t last the life of the engine. I know for some it’s not a concern but it’s a thing. I am curious as hell to see what the 6th gen ends up like but still feeling very content having bought a new 5th gen last fall. Where as it gets dogged on for being so old, to me it’s the most refined and perfected vehicle Toyota has made since the 200 series left the chat. And I would argue the 5th gen 4Runner is a tick higher with less issues than the two hundy. Anyway, only time will tell but absolutely enjoying the hell out of our 5th gen and am pretty certain it was the best choice for our family even if it isn’t the newest shiny object out there.

Those same people are also proclaiming "Toyota reliability is the best" and arrogantly try to mock you. They have no evidence to make that claim when Toyota is completely changing their design philosophy. I see more evidence that Toyota quality is already tanking. Time marches on and things change. It's not the 90's anymore, they don't know what they're talking about and they're uninformed fan-boys, plain and simple.

Think it will be a bust for most people, EPA restrictions forced them to changed the engine not by choice and with the unknows of its reliability in the long run and as this a truck/suv not a daily car commuter. The 6th gen will go against the core principles of the 5th gen that people come to love, 6th Gen will appeal to new generations of buyers of cheap tech thrills and with a city commuter refined driving experience with a overprice tag as we have seen with the Tacoma.

The rule was that if the vehicle actually changed and was completely new redesign, the engine would need to conform with the latest emissions standard. The loophole is that you just keep using the same underpinnings like the frame and suspension- and technically you can change the cab design while keeping the same old engines- that's what Dodge does in my opinion- refreshes, without being full redesign. Toyota sort of did it with the Tundra Gen 2.

Narrowed it down to the Offroad Premium, Offroad Premium with KDSS, or the TRDPro. Resale value is meaningful, though we do keep vehicles for the long term. Mostly on-road and light trail performance prioritized. What's going to happen with the Mexico built 4Runner is that you're going to have latent defects and quirks that don't affect longevity of the truck, but really are just unresolved and annoying to the customer.
I drove a Mexico built 2nd gen Tacoma V6 for 9 years- and every year during the cold-to-warm and warm-to-cold transition where you might have freezing in the morning and 50ish weather after work, my truck to do the hard-start (like a GM in a horror movie) without actually starting 1-2 times for the season- and then it would start up on next attempt. Then it wouldn't repeat ever for the rest of the transition season. Totally ignored and unresolved because it didn't hurt the engine. Those trucks also had a pinging noise at 3k RPM in hot weather if you were hauling anything heavy- which they tried to ECU-flash fix for the 2012-2015 folks, but didn't for anyone else. I would just temporarily use 93 and it would resolve that way, but no mention of that from Toyota. Another minor one- my door cards also weren't built the same- they all had some lazy, sonic-welds- they were way overtacked together, so I forgot about upgrading that crappy pokadot cloth armrest. Looked fine outside though quality-wise. Oh, and the door seals were pretty terrible- they would tap and rattle in cold weather- and if you got the cab warm, and then sat in the truck while the cab cooled, you could actually hear the door seal contracting.
You're going to have ankle-biter quality issues that annoy the customer, but aren't going to be detrimental to longevity of the vehicle. We'll see with that 4 cylinder turbo though...

I'm Toyota biased, but with that disclosed, I'm baffled by the logic that Toyota is placing their entire reputation at risk due to motors being turbo charged, hence more complicated. I think it's fair to say they did their research. I am on my second Toyota tt and have been very satisfied. I get the nostalgia, but to now infer that Toyota may be throwing it all away by going away from the V8. I'm old enough to have been around when the 22R was introduced and then discontinued. It was a magnificent motor, I remember a neighbor buying the new six cylinder Tacoma Extended cab 4x4, everybody saying they won't hold up etc etc. He put over 400k on that truck. There are plenty of old V8 trucks out there for those that want them, and everything, including vehicles, costs more now. I'm pretty sure time will prove the 3.44 tt to be like most everything Toyota makes, excellent. I've been driving them since 2018. As for "they are no better on fuel than the V8." My previous LX got 14 mpg, period. My new averages a little over 19 mpg. So, to say 35 percent changes, my life would be a stretch, but 35 percent is 35 percent. To each their own but to bash a platform because it's not a V8 makes no sense to me. If you don't want it, find a V8. I'll put the current LX build quality against any vehicle being produced right now.

I never understood why people buy a new car for all the new tech. Most all of the new tech can be added to any model yourself. The new turbos are the deal breaker for me know longer will we see maintenance free toyoats going forever. For people that don't keep there cars very long it's not a issue but to the ones who keep there toyotas for 15-20+ years it will be. Replacing the turbos once you get around 120,000 miles+ will be costly a expense that was not there before hand and lets not forget the stupid auto/start stop to wear your engine out quicker.
I still have my 1997 Tacoma the hybird garagbe will never last 27 years without being replaced. Just bought a 23 4runner and 2019 V8 tundra. I could have bought the newer models but no thanks toyota.

it's also unlikely these will have many issues for 12-15 years if well cared for like toyotas of the past. will they last 25-30? it'll be a long time until we really know. i wouldn't sweat it. get yourself an internal combustion now if you can't sleep at night with a turbo on your vehicle. as always, watch out for the first few model years if you want to keep it a long time. most importantly, maintain your toyota and prevent it from rusting out and i bet it'll treat you well for a long time.

Moving to a "turbo" platform from the straight V6 in the case of Toyota (as w/the Tundra/Tacoma) is a horrible idea when you consider it's only being done for 1 -3 mpg (city/hwy) improvement. What you get with the turbo platform is the opportunity of buying a $50k+ untested vehicle. Why untested? From the get/go you know you'll be losing engine/trans torque, but what you don't know is how forcing that engine with the turbo over time (engine compression) will affect longevity/maintenance/repair$$. Also, a turbo will only last with proper maintenance 140k miles (that's it). Looking at the number of turbos on the Toyota lot (Tundra/Tacoma) the truck buyer at this point doesn't seem to want them at all. When you consider a V6 turbo for a full sized F150 or Ram 1500 can be had for almost 1/2 the price right now yep... 1/2 the price (like options) - what is Toyota thinking? Toyota trucks (monthly inventory), is approaching a very high number (nationwide) second only to Ford (TRUCK - lot rot) . OUCH - Toyota, a very bad business move to-date. Want a high quality straight six and still thinking? No brainer... buy the 2024.

I have faith in Toyota over other manufacturers like GM to do turbo charging right and make it reliable but only time will tell. However, I don’t have any faith at all in anything hybrid because the battery will always be a weak point that will inevitably cost thousands to replace and it just adds way too much electrical complication and possible fail points. I may be in the minority for Toyota fans because I really hate how gutless the Tacoma and 4runner have always been so I am actually looking forward to the new turbo in the runner as long as it’s not hybrid and as long as that rear window rolls down I’ll be buying one. 😂

Toyota is relying on its fanbase (or "fan boys and girls") to promote the new designs while neglecting the shortcomings. Removing the V8 from the 4Runner in 2009 was a disappointment for me, and now they've added a new Land Cruiser positioned between the 4Runner and the Lexus GX. I'm not optimistic about the upcoming 2025 4Runner, which is why I opted for a 2023 TRD ORP. In my opinion, the 4Runner has been the most versatile SUV ever built by a car manufacturer. Let's see if Toyota can maintain this legacy or miss the mark.

I understand the fustrations with the turbo charging and hybridization of vehicles. However, I think Toyota wants to play the long game here. By the time all other companies also switch to more turbo charged vehicles, as they already are, in a couple years, we will have more refined engines, and Toyota hybrids are very well known to exceed a whole lot of miles/KMs. As for the 4Runner, I think production will stay in Japan, hopefully, and the rear roll down window will stay, as they may have purposefully hid the window.
