Fantastic Concert! Temple Square Organist Richard Elliot is indeed a leading organist. He is a beacon of music for the LDS Church. All five organists are unique in their own ways of expressing their musicianship. I would like to highlight that "Sospiri" by Edward Elgar and "Wondrous Love" performed by Andrew Unsworth transport me into an ethereal and beautiful spiritual dimension with our Father in Heaven. The arrangement of these two pieces of music brings a combination of organ stops to a different sound effect that I have not heard before from this organ. Fantastic!!!
Nice to see a lady playing the organ. I've been a member of the church for 64 years and this is only the second time I've been privileged to see it. Wonderful concert, loved it.
I'm a little late "piping" in, but I've listened to this program at least six times. While I was a trumpet player for many years, the pipe organ is my favorite instrument. Years ago, before I moved to the St. Louis area for work, I sang with Mormon Youth Symphony and Chorus (if anyone remembers, while I was there, I'm the guy for whom they'd rent a truck and I'd drive all the large stuff to our out of the Tabernacle concerts). I shall never forget sitting behind organist, Roy M. Darley, when the orchestra performed Camille Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3 (Organ). It blew me and everyone in the Tabernacle out of their chairs (benches for the audience). I served my mission in England and had the privilege of being at the Hyde Park Chapel in London when Dr. Alexander Schreiner gave a recital there. Need I say more--I was hooked. As for this performance, it was nothing short of spectacular. Sister Margetts playing Jesu took me back to my days when I used this piece as a trumpet embouchure exercise. For those who don't know, Dr. Luke Howard is a musicologist and professor at BYU and sings in the Tabernacle Choir. If you have the Choir's 2016 recording of Handle's Messiah, on the third disk (Special Features), he provides wonderful history and context to the Choir's latest recording of Messiah. I'm not surprised they tapped him to provide commentary for this performance. The big white covers on the keyboard--I don't know for sure. My guess, those pistons were pre-set for some reason, and weren't to be pushed by accident. The covers weren't there for all the solos. Like everyone else, I needed this concert and am glad the organ staff, under principle organist Richard Elliott's guidance, put it together. I'm glad more are coming each week. As a side note. With the latest rebuild and updates to the Tabernacle Organ by the Shoenstein Company, the "old gal" can take whatever the organists throw at her. The William Tell Finale should be proof of that. I have my computer linked to my 5.1 stereo system and when my wife is out of the house, I crank it up till the house shakes. It's glorious! Well, I've rambled enough.
I’ll never forget the story of when Schreiner told guest organist, Virgil Fox NOT to use the full organ as the “old gal” just couldn’t take it!! Of course, Virgil being Virgil the showman, used it anyway and brought the house down! The next day Shriner had it screwed down so it couldn’t be used again!! I’m looking forward to these virtual noon day concerts!!! 🎹🎼
Stunning: the organists; the instrument; the selection; the informed commentary. Streaming online has brought this to a world audience, not just a local one, and enabled that amazing five-part finale.
please do NOT tell my beautiful grand piano that I'd give just about ANYTHING to be able to play that organ even for a few minutes....but they'd have trouble getting me away from it, once I've planted myself in front of the console...It would be with great force, kicking, screaming and crying. Pipe Organ and Organ has been my LIFE LONG passion. I was 5 yrs old when my folks gave me a little chord organ. I gave hours long concerts to my dollys.
me tooo!!! I've been playing piano for 15 years now, but I have always wanted to learn how to really play the organ. my uncle toured Europe a little bit as an organ student when he was in college and I've always admired him for that. It's such a beautiful and versatile instrument.
*I am piping happy!* My family loves this music :) I got all giddy when I heard how often these Organ Concerts will be airing!! How blessed we truly are during these amazing times.
This is treat to hear and see awesome organists. I had 4 years of lessons as a teenager and have played the organ in church for over 60 years. Love all the organists but particularly am amazed at Richard Elliott , he is a superstar. thanks
In recent months, we have all been admonished to "Hear Him", and have been told of many ways that can happen. For me personally, music can open my mind and warm my heart as quickly as anything that I know. While sitting at home alone this evening, several of the pieces in your inaugural Piping Up concert have done just that for me. Memories of the few times that I have been privileged to actually sit and listen to the organ within the walls of the Tabernacle were brought to life once again. My deepest appreciation to each of you for the music that you chose to perform for this concert. I look forward to many more.
Andrew Unsworth's arrangement of Elgar's Sospiri was completely enthralling. Beautifully scored with an engaged performance , it shows all the subtle timbres of this great instrument. Also, bravi to the audio editors who put together the finale. Spectacular.
What an incredible program! Thank you for reviving this tradition and making it available for everyone. All five of the organists were amazing and I loved the commentary by Dr. Howard.
Excellent program! Bravo/a to all. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the Tabernacle organ and organists. There is so little time during Music and the Spoken Word for organ pieces anymore. And, when there is time we seldom see the organist playing. It was Dr. Schreiner's playing on television and his repertoire selections, that influenced my becoming an organist. I hope and pray this will inspire other young people to pursue the organ. Thank you.
I liked the Lemmens the best, but the most fun piece was the William Tell Overture. What a show-stopper! Brilliantly arranged and played. Thanks to all five organists!
This is absolutely wonderful! Thank you for showing off the talents of all five of our amazing organists. The musical selections are great--showing off the versatility of this grand instrument, such as the beautiful Skinner strings we're hearing on Andrew's Elgar piece. Thank you also for showing the organists the entire time rather than the nature pictures usually shown during the broadcasts. For those of us who are organists, might it be possible to include a link to the organ's stop list sometime? Again, thank you so much for this amazing opportunity. It's been so great to hear the organ again!
I love Andrew Undsworth’s performance. The organ tones were beautiful. The harp effect is brilliant. I love all of the performances but I am partial to slow, emotional performances. I love to play that way myself, although I am not the talent of these organists.
This is absolutely WONDERFUL. Thanks so much for streaming this weekly series. I so enjoy and admire the Temple organists, Richard Elliott in particular. I see they've added a couple new, outstanding organists. What happened to Christiansen?
I wondered that too! Whoever runs the choir's page answered that question in the broadcast. Apparently it's a Bluetooth button for the organists using their tablets to "turn the page" so to speak on their music. If you notice it's only there when Linda Margetts and Joseph Peeples are playing, as they were the only two to use tablets.

This program was incredible! I’m a YSA-age ward organist and I can only dream to be half as good as these five. Such marvelous pieces and talent!
