I remember the news over here going insane after the draw with Italy. Honestly that Tournament is probably the direct reason why football is so popular in New Zealand now and why we could be entering a golden generation
@@hamdog9703 It was a seismic result, really glad it's having an impact now 10-15 years on. Perfect timing with the expansion of the World Cup in 2026!
Please New Zealand: Do the world and yourselves a favour, and refrain from using the term “golden generation”. The “golden generation” was the crop of extremely talented Portuguese players that emerged from the mid-1990s, following Paolo Futre. They were playing in top clubs up until around 2010. They also never won anything for Portugal, bottling the 2004 Euro final, and falling apart in the 2002 World Cup prior. That was football’s “golden generation”. The English media makes itself look stupid borrowing the term both when Rooney and Gerard and Lampard joined Beckham et al around 2004, and recently with the emergence of Bellingham and Palmer. Be above them New Zealand.
It seems history is repeating for Italy 1938: world cup champions 1950: group stage 1954:group stage 1958: did not qualify 1962: group stage 1966: group stage 2006: world cup champions 2010: group stage 2014: group stage 2018: failed to qualify 2022: failed to qualify 2026: ?
Who was worse in 2010, France or Italy? You could argue France as their players fell out and went on strike, but Italy had an easier group than France.
Except Euro 2012 & 2020 and Juventus reaching 2015 Champ League final & Inter doing so in 2023, Italian football has not been rosy at all. When El Shaarawy started for Italy against Switzerland, I thought "Is this 2013?" When the likes of Sweden and North Macedonia are stopping you from qualifying for the World Cup and your last World Cup appearances saw you lose to Costa Rica and Uruguay, things are bad. Add to that, there's a lot of rejects from Premier League and Championship joining clubs in Serie A. It could be a long time until we see any Italian club win a Champions League since Inter in 2010 (and that Inter barely featured any Italians). The AC side of 07 didn’t have that many natives either
@@crystalencore91 It's such a shame because Italian football was huge growing up, had some amazing names and the fans really made it. The El Shaarawy comment made me laugh, it was quite ridiculous seeing him reappear, over a decade on from his best form.
Getting fired over "only" reaching the euro quarter finals is wild considering that the next coach to merely just qualify Italy to a world cup is gonna become a national hero
Fun fact about countries that Australia plays in a world cup. Every time weve been in a group match the winners always played Australia or top 16. Weve played the world championship every time. 2006 we played Italy they won, 2010 spain we played them, 2014 germany, 2018 france and 2022 argentina. Outrageous luck we have
If New Zealand score that second goal it would have been the biggest upset in the history of the World Cup and would have been sensational at the same time this is what the World Cup is about underdog stories I remember this game I was 10 years old and my family were drinking beer celebrating New Zealand draw. News flash I live in USA in nyc with Mexican and Ecuadorian parents. But Italy haven’t been the same since 2006 and last time they play in a World Cup was in 2014 and possibly we won’t see them in 2026 there the next Hungary use to be a bad boy team now there in shambles that is Italy. Should do Mexican national team decline as well which I am fuming as well mate
The champion failing in the next world cup was a common thing between 1994 and 2018. 1994: Germany loses to Bulgaria in the quarters 1998: France demolishes Brazil in the finals 2002: France exits in the group stage with only one or two goals scored. 2006: Brazil loses to France yet again 2010: Well just watch the video 2014: Spain gets wrecked by the Dutch and Chileans 2018: Germany does a 2002 France and gets sent home early

13:02 Buffon didn't play against new Zealand or Slovakia. He got injured after the first half against Paraguay and replaced by Federico marchetti.

The AC Milan side in the 2007 UCL final had 7 Italians in the lineup, so I don't know what you are talking about in that regard.
