I just ordered a Coleman liquid fuel burner (2023, Germany, you may google the Problems we Germans should expect right now), and im looking for additional info while its been delivered. Thats a quick fix for a problem that may occure, and i thank you for that guide to a fix:)
They are also alot more dangerous since the air relief is through a hole in the side. There was a lawsuit they lost which is why they changed to the one piece with the reliefs in the threads to vent the pressure when opening
Thank you for making this video. I just tested my gas lamp and going camping in a few days and the gasket is gone. Going to Home Hardware tomorrow to fix it on the cheap :)
I love your DIY videos. Cheap and easy fix. I have a 1gal Ziplock bag I always take camping with my coleman tools and extra parts in it. Might as well head down to the hardware store and grab a couple of 3/4" rubber washers too.
Basnett company sells the proper gaskets for these. #3 for modern one piece caps. #2 for large 3 piece caps #1 for small 3 piece caps. Paint can opener makes installing them alot easier. They aren't very expensive and you're getting the proper part.
I have a repeat issue with the Coleman propane stove, the piece where the propane bottle screws on.It was never an issue before, used these propane stove daily for decades, but last 4 years,I had to replace 2 of these. The bottle seems to strip the soft metal in the connecter and a bit of propane steadily leaks out.You can smell it and bottles last much less time.
Great idea!! I wonder what Coleman would say? "OMG!! You can't do that with a common hardware store washer! It's not an official Coleman gasket, the world will spin off it's axis and you'll all be doomed!!" Keep up the great work!
I came across some viton flat gaskets that are just a tiny bit smaller than the coleman seals and they fit perfectly into the one-piece caps without any force but they are just a tad loose. A tiny dab of permatex gasket maker (had the tube for 25+ years now) and it holds them in place perfectly. Both the seals and gasket maker are designed for petroleum fuels so there's no reaction at all. Works a charm.
Great info as always! Done it many times for my lanterns. Nitrile rubber is the best and is completely resistant to fuel. Only thing that will mess you up is over tightening the caps as with standard cap seals from Coleman. Just like your water taps... people just don't know when tight is tight..... or as you have put it... "gorilla tight". Love you Skeet. Lots of love from Ontario Canada! Hope your new rig will make it up this way when the borders open up!
that would be for an emergency/gotta fix it until i get home---situation.... the gasket needs to be able to spin inside the cap so when you tighten cap, it will seal properly to the fount/tank and not kink/crinkle up inside the cap...the best way to get the old gasket out is to heat with a propane torch and burn the old gasket out completely---THEN---replace the gasket with a proper size gasket....
Basnett #3 for modern 1 piece caps. #2 for large 3 piece #1 for small 3 piece. Also pick up a paint can opener if you don't have one to get it in the groove around the center part of the cap 👍🏻
Thanks that was helpful. My 1959 Coleman lantern cap was leaking. Let me ask you on the sportster single burner stove. Mine has a leak between the burner and the tank. It might be where the burner screws onto the tank. Have you had that problem? If so how do you fix it.
Basnett #3 for modern one piece #2 for large 3 piece caps #1 for small 3 piece caps. The modern ones are the harder ones to do but not bad with paint can opener.

Jiujitsu2000 doing another video! Nice job 😊👍
Perfect idea. I have a collection of flat rubber washers used on fuel systems at the shop. Didn’t even cross my mind
Love the Coleman series that you do.
Agreed!
Thank you. I have a couple more coming soon! Blessings from Arizona!
I really like the 3 piece caps. Way easier to replace the gaskets.

Just tried it. I used a nickel as my guide and with a little trim, it fit perfect. Thanks

Another great bit of information.

Napa has rubber gasket material. It's probably $5 a roll now but available in many thickness.
Thank you great idea

Any ideas to replace the the rubber gasket on the pump?
I like the rubber flat washer fix. But I have a question. Are you leaving the original washer in the cap when you use the flat washer?
That's a great idea. Thank you
You bet!
Great vid!!
Fuel will eat that rubber. Use nitrile or Viton rubber you can get at an auto/truck supply. Dangerous idea for a pressurized fuel appliance.
Can't find those washers anywhere

For #3 modern one piece caps installation.

The modern ones are the harder ones to do but not bad with paint can opener.
Great Video, but.... lose the noisy intro!
+5 Three minutes wasted at the beginning
Its wrong way. Gum inner tube is not gas/fuel resistant... May be special gum
