Use some pieces of roof slate to pack under the joists when levelling them, you need something that won’t compress over time when there is weight on the floor. A builder did that in my house when putting in new concrete lintels over the windows.
@@tammiewilson5185 Yes, he has been using a combination of small stones and lime. The lime, because it is a mixture, can lose its rigidity over time and shift. I rebuilt a house that was originally build in the 1920's and finally getting a finished roof on it was possibly the best day of the whole build. We took it all the way back to the outer brick walls and foundation but none of the work it took to rebuild it work compared to being in the house during the first rain storm and knowing that I wasn't going to have a flood inside.
The heating system is almost exactly what the Romans used; the hypocaust. The Romans heated the floors as well as installing tubes to bring heat upward, warming the walls and the air. It still remains in Roman Baths that are still in use today. It has been called the world's first central heating system. It was invented in several parts of the world at different times, the Chinese used the same design, who knows where else it might have been used. It would have been useful to the ancient communities living in the Andes. Living in cold climates keep people busily inventing ways to stay warm!

This is like an archeological dig! So many cool things being revealed. I notice that in the last couple of weeks your views have increased a lot. That is so great. I would love it if you would do a video focused on the process you have to go through to undertake a job like this-what does the French government require in the way of permits and inspections? Did you have to have a structural engineer do a study of some sort before you could start? How did you even know how to proceed, what order to do things? And what is the general order of steps for the near future? And most of all, I'd love your personal thoughts on what made you think you could do this! You're doing it, for sure, but what gave you the confidence?
Dan you are so inspiring. I’ve finally got the garden I’ve always wanted. It’s taken me a month of planting 5-10 plants a day. It’s just some thing about watching you work so hard it inspires me to get off the couch and do what needs doing to achieve what I want in my backyard.

I think you are on the right track with your idea that the in-wall pipes are part of the heating system. I have a masonry house dating from 1885 that has similar ducts built into the masonry walls. They lead to heating registers as well as cold air returns. The system was fed by a coal-fired boiler in the sub-basement. That boiler was exhausted by a chimney built within the party wall on the side of the house. You may find a chimney opening in an exterior wall once you are able to reach the roof line.
Wow, I never thought I would ever be excited to see a tarp roof - but I am excited to see a tarp roof lol. You might need some kind of A-frame to put the tarp on so it doesn't turn into a water hammock.
Dan, your subs just keep going up! So many people are enthralled with your project and every time they see a bit more progress you draw them in more! I like many others have been with you from the beginning and can really see how far you have come and all of the work you have put in to get to this point. Not only your building skills, but all the studying and practicing with the filming as well! BRAVO!
You said years!! I don't know if I can wait that long LOL. I've been watching others with Chateaus, none I've seen are doing a rebuild like this... I'm excited to see it finished. What a journey!!
Those pipes from the former hot-air heating system - sound almost ideal for running pipes and wiring to the upper floor levels - especially if the bathrooms are near by.
It’s nice to get a confirmation on the progression of the renovation. I’m glad he came to see what you are doing and what you will need. Looking forward to see how you level the current sixteen or so beams.
I love so many people comment and I hope this one doesn't get lost. This is just a suggestion that may save you money in the long run. Treat all the wood for wood worm and cover every inch before you put the beams in. From what I understand those little critters will do anything to eat your hard work. So, don't let them.
I like how you say both names for floors “ third, second” !! So inclusive!👏🏻🇺🇸 Loved seeing builder man. Love the ‘new’ music styles/sound. I’m anxious to climb higher and higher! (that toilet❣️)
@@ginettesnell8084 The one next to the water tank definitely is one (you can clearly see the small sink-style drain and holes for the hot and cold taps) and I'm 99% sure the one in the remaining bathroom is a bidet too from the shape and the pipes going up to the taps. I wonder how old these are. They've got a 1920s/30s vibe to me but it seems to make the most sense that Mironnet put them in when he bought the place in 1967 (as far as I can tell Gilberte Bardet owned it until she passed that year but probably didn't live in the château) unless they were installed by the OSE in 1939. It's not even certain these small rooms were bathrooms during the OSE era though. Between 1945 and 1960 Gilberte apparently rented out the château as holiday accommodation.
I feel that we could call this merchant and make a payment over the phone for Dans materials ... a great way to help out ... awesome nearly to the top.. In years to come your boys will say my Dad built this , it took a few years ❤
Wow omg Dan you are going to have muscles on muscles. It's amazing how you are doing a lot of this stuff all on your Jack Jones , hope you keep a phone on you at all times just in case! Thanks for sharing 😊
Won't you have a lot of wall repairs near the top before you'll get the last floors in? You're teaching me patience while you nibble away constantly all the while making noticeable progress. Not many of us would dare imagine bringing the chateau back to its former glory but I'm well and truly hooked on watching your progress.
Hi Dan, Not sure if you will restore the old heating system but if you don't you may find the old "piping" between floors can make an ideal method to pass through electrical wires and maybe even plumbing if plastic water pipes are used in France. This will save an enormous amount walls chasing and filling and will avoid ugly conduits. Just a thought. Love you channel.
It’s fantastic that you’re restoring your chateau at a time when under floor heating is so advanced and such a better way to heat especially larger rooms like you’ll have. It’s brilliant.
Watching from Perth Australia so good to wake up and watch your progress your work ethic is amazing nothing gets you down ,good to see the local supplier taking an interest and giving good advice sometimes it’s nice to have back up stops you second guessing yourself good luck in the future can’t wait to see the tarp up Thanks for the vlogs regards Dave& Pat
I don't know if it feels like it to you but to me watching, it feels like you are just flying along with progress. Just remember that every piece of wood you place or every brick you lay is one step closer to a lovely chateau to live in in the future.

You're doing it, for sure, but what gave you the confidence?
you don't need permits to improve structural things to prevent collapse
Quels progrès en français Dan, je suis impressionnée autant par votre courage que par vos efforts pour vous exprimer avec tant d'applications.
I am French. So I am glad to listen to you in French. 😊
Glad to see local builder being interested in your Chateau. Keep up the good work.💪👷
Dan you are so inspiring. I’ve finally got the garden I’ve always wanted. It’s taken me a month of planting 5-10 plants a day. It’s just some thing about watching you work so hard it inspires me to get off the couch and do what needs doing to achieve what I want in my backyard.
Hi Dan. Great work. 👍 I can't wait till it's time, to open up those arches that isclosed up now. And also the arched windows. That is going to be stunning. I am so excited with you. Go Dan. He's the man. 👍👍👍
🙏 grand merci à vous qui restaurez notre patrimoine. Les français aiment les anglais qui font cela avec beaucoup de goût. Je vous suis depuis le sud de la France. Merci encore pour votre travail et votre courage ! 🙏
Not only rebuilding the ruin but filming it and editing it. Dan THE man!
Looking forward to your daily vlogs to see the progress. Very proud of the hard work your doing and the views are magnificent.
Brilliant, yours is my favourite Chateau channel :-)
I love so many people comment and I hope this one doesn't get lost. This is just a suggestion that may save you money in the long run. Treat all the wood for wood worm and cover every inch before you put the beams in. From what I understand those little critters will do anything to eat your hard work. So, don't let them.
He showed doing that in a previous episode
Love the blogs, no unnecessary chatter, impressed with your skills and determination, 👍👍
I like how you say both names for floors “ third, second” !! So inclusive!👏🏻🇺🇸 Loved seeing builder man. Love the ‘new’ music styles/sound. I’m anxious to climb higher and higher! (that toilet❣️)
I think it looks more like a bidet possibly 🤔
In years to come your boys will say my Dad built this , it took a few years ❤
Surely Chanson could sponsor you with some equipment. Love it when you mused over working inside while it's not raining inside 😍🏰❤
I was getting worried Dan! Where is the video? Oh my, now what has happened...and then here you are! From Florida USA ❤️🇺🇲
Wow omg Dan you are going to have muscles on muscles. It's amazing how you are doing a lot of this stuff all on your Jack Jones , hope you keep a phone on you at all times just in case! Thanks for sharing 😊
What a great job you are doing. I do wish you had someone there with you though just in case something happened. Be safe stay healthy 😊
Still amazed how the bees relocated when you started adding the flooring 🐝 😊
well, he got lucky, it is that time of year
I am impressed as to how nice the timbers are milled. So straight and true
Yes, the ducts would be ideal for adding en-suite bathrooms to the rooms across the stairs! And of course for running all sorts of electrics.
Super bin ich froh das alles ok ist drücke weiter meine Daumen ,und hoffe das alles gut geht
That hard work your putting in is making something magical that we can’t wait to see
You are doing a wonderful job, Dan. It will be nice not to get rained on.
Thanks for sharing your day! 😀
Dan that smile is fantastic on you. I love just how happy you are with each beam. It makes you beam. Lol
Every morning I sit in bed with my cup of tea and watch your vlog. Go Dan! Love watching your journey 🙌
Dan, you are such a likable guy. You make me smile every day. 😊
Dan, Your work ethic never fails to amaze me. I make sure I watch all your adds, Keep going, you are doing an amazing job.
Loved hearing your French in this one, Dan!
I hope more specialist supply companies and local radio get on board this journey, to boost recognition for what you doing
I’m new to the party and since yesterday I think I’m about to catch up then I find more videos that I haven’t seen. I’m so impressed and hooked. Looking forward to watching the new progress.
I look forward every day to see your progress. A lot of work is still ahead. But you will get there eventually. You are awesome.
Love your perseverance and commitment to this building 💕
Good to hear you getting by in French Dan. Also can it be that you will actually get some scaffolding? Great.
That was the purpose with Chausson matériaux I guess.
I can't even imagine this place being rebuilt. It's in such a dilapidated condition. If and when it's completed, I'll declare it a miracle for sure. Good luck!!
It can be rebuilt with a lot of dedication, hard work and money for materials.
Dan, when I was listening to both of speaking French, I stopped quick when I heard his name. I actually rewound the video to make sure I read and heard correctly. My maiden name is Chaisson & I truly thought I heard my family’s name! It is wonderful to make those connections with local businesses and those in the trades. You’re doing amazing work and should be very happy and proud!!
The builders company is Chausson materiaux.
@@thierrymilan2039 Chausson and Chaisson are close in sound, especially when local pronunciation is closer to Chasson (to the English speaker's ear).
What a great discovery regarding the heat vents. So nice that the building inspector came out to see how best to assist you. You will definitely make him rich 😂😂😂See ya tomorrow 😍😘
I find all of the cool stuff you learn about the iterations of this place to be fascinating as well as enjoy seeing you bring that old girl back to life. ❤✌🏼
It’s great you got some advice Dan. I’m so glad you mentioned scaffolding. Great idea mate. Hugs from Australia. See ya tomorra
