In this weeks video, I go out to ask people if they know how many continents there are. Surprisingly, a lot of the Europeans I asked thought the Americas (North America, South America) are one continent.

My 7 years old knows way more than continents only when it comes to geography, he knows about capital of each country of the world. Literally..
That’s definitely a massive exaggeration when you say “each country” but that’s great he is developing a sense of geography. So many people are clueless about parts of the world outside of their own.
@@Ryan-qq9qe yeah it seems exaggeration, but Trust me that is true. I have tested number of times and 9 out of 10 he tells me the correct answer. Thanks to technology who has made it easier for our kids to learn grow.

If I say “many” or “a lot”, it doesn’t mean “ALL”. You are saying “there are people who are open minded”, but where did I say otherwise? Saying there are many clueless people doesn’t mean people who enjoy learning don’t exist. You’re an example of why college educated people aren’t always the brightest.
In case people are confused about continents, they are not geo-political groupings of countries. They are based on plate tectonics and shifting landmasses caused by changes in the earth's crust that over time created the separate continents.

Central America: El Salvador, Panama, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica etc
South America: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela.
In some countries Eurasia counts like one continent.

When I was young, 60 years ago, Antartica was not considered as a continent. We learned at school that there were 5 continents: Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania.

Europe and Asia are one continent. It's called Eurasia.

@@Racko. No they aren't you just haven't been to a place which doesn't teach Western curriculum. I guarantee you've never been outside the English speaking or Western sphere of influence since you're an English speaker. Besides, Europe and Asia are distinct due to political reasons, not because of any geographical features. The same geographical features that nake Europe a separate continent would also apply to India, for example.

There are 7 continents : Europe, Asia, Africa, Antarctica, Oceania, North America and South America. The United States of America is a country that has many names including USA, US, United States and America. If you want to consider the 6 continent model, then the continent would be called The Americas in the plural. But in the singular, America always refers to the USA. I'm just telling you what I've been taught in school, if you've been taught otherwise good for you.
