Lou knows good vocal technique. He just does. What I wouldn't do to be taught half of what he knows and I'm a gigging singer. Axl used a pretended voice. He configured and altered his vocal timbre. Lou used his real voice.
Good point by Lou about Axl. He was right. Axl shredded his voice during all those years of not taking care of it properly. He sounds like a shell of his former self now.
Love Lou, and Axl as well, saw them both in the 80"s and 90's. Two of my favorite vocalists. All great singers push it to the limit Lou Gramm, Robert Plant, Steven Tyler, Axl did as well. Axl ripped it soooo hard when he was young, he sang like he was possessed. If you take a look at MTV's Guns and Roses Live at the Ritz from 1988, he's just an animal, he gave it 110% just shredding vocal cords. We still get to see all these great singers at the top of their game thankfully because of video. We all get old, and all good things come to pass sadly.
Sure, he was absolutely damaging his vocal chords. But.....he sang hard like that and good for 25 years, touring constantly, over 2 hour concerts every night. I'd say it's worth that damage. If he sang like that and couldn't sing anymore just after a couple years then I would say that definitely wouldn't have been worth it. Sure, his voice is completely gone now. But he's in his 60's. Socks y singers are in the same boat. For how hard he was on his voice I'm really shocked it lasted as long as it did. I saw them in Cleveland in 1990. Still is the best concert I've ever seen. But I definitely wouldn't go see them now. I don't think they should be playing now. He sounds like Mickey Mouse. Literally. It's embarrassing really. I'll watch a video every now and then from their recent concerts and j it's just horrendous.
Axl DOES enjoy being blessed with great range. However...I'll find myself on the hit list for pointing this out...Axl's upper range comes off as more of a rat-fink whine. (Oh, G'NR fans, please forgive me.)

He should comment on Paul Stanley
