I was lucky to pick up a 66 when I was a kid in about 74 from a guy in a funk band in Detroit. Many guitars have come and gone, but the 66 and the Fender Vibrolux amp I picked up from the same era still sit in the front room.
I thought at first that the '50's strat had a rosewood board....look at all that old funk on that board. Beautiful! Looks very vintage and is a player's guitar. Great info, great playing as always. You have some really nice guitars and i love seeing them. Keep the videos coming!
John Sounds All Right . He's Our Guiding Light Through These Difficult Times , Oh Lord Shine The Glory Of GOD Down On The Blues Guitarists For Evermore . Amen .
Awhile back I bought a Fender F65 acoustic on eBay. Came with one of those black/yellow/red Fender straps from the mid-Seventies. It was stiff as a board so I ran it through the washing machine on the gentle cycle. Came out soft and supple.
In the 80's I had a 54, a 57, and 59 (3) tone sunbursts. 1965 Dakota Red and 63 Blonde. Out of those the 59 was super light and sounded different and killer from any other Strats I've owned.
Hi I am trying to find out what the nut width and neck shapes were on the cbs era strat. Can you tell me what those specs are on the 66 strat? I had a Japanese 1968 reissue I loved but I wonder if the specs were vintage correct and am ordering a fender custom shop guitar but trying to find info for myself personal choices before I order Thanks
Great video as always John! My favorite year for Fender has always been 1966; especially late '66. I'm sure you realized your goof: CBS bought Fender in 1965, not '66. 🤪 This so-called transition logo is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. Why? the "transition" logo was not a transition at all. The larger gold font first appeared on Stratocasters during 1964, and was seen up until the middle of 1967; however, I have seen a few from 1968 with the so-called transition logo. It appeared on Jazzmasters during the course of 1963, and on the Jaguar in its first year of production: 1962. On the Telecaster I've seen on odd one as early as late 1965, and an occasional one in 1967; come to think of it, I might have scene an odd one from '68! (?) The absolute CBS decal is of course, the big black print, which made sense as it would show up better on television-especially black and white-and in in print media. Personally, I much prefer the "transition" type one the other two, but that's also because I favor that period of Fender most. As we know, corporations have to purchase supplies in large quantities in order for things to be cost effective, and I time so they don't run out of what they need in the middle of a production run. I'm sure those in charge of logistics ordered the bolder gold logo long before Leo ever thought of selling the company, and just happened to have them ready to go by sheer happenstance. Here's another misnomer: the reverse F logo first appeared on the 1962 Jazz Bass bridge cover. It also appeared in 1964 on the amplifier tilt back legs. (Maybe even 1963?) Of course th e F neck plate, and F tuners are true CBS appointments. If you're interested, I have the largest vintage string collection/stash in the world.
we need a premier guitar John Bohlinger Cribs edition while we're all on lockdown. Take us through your guitars and describe your art... and your denim collection 😂
The midrange of the 55 is very different to the 66. Thicker, richer, warm but clear. A bit more Tele ish. The 66 is snappier, quieter and more scooped. More like your quintessential Strat tone. Loved both immensely.
Its OK John, I wanted a G -I-Joe for Christmas, my cheap dad got me a cheap knock-off from somewhere off-shore, it was the cheapest looking thing. At least your grand-mother tried in her way, and you know she did, thats why you still own and use it.
That can't be a true '55...the sunburst with the red between the black and yellow was done from mid-'58 onward ( before that it was black to yellow sunburst only ) so that body has to be a '58 or later. Not only that but a '55 body would be ash; the body in the video has almost no wood grain visible and looks more like alder. Nice guitar, though.
Too much reverb. It masks the subtle differences you are looking to hear in each guitar. That and the fact that the amp isn’t close mic’d, make this a fun video to show off some very cool guitars but not a great comparison of tone.

I clicked on this video just to hear you playing a Stratocaster... Didn’t disappoint.
Thanks for the post. You are building a very nice collection. Bless your Grandma’s heart.
Love the Howlin' Wolf bend (based on one of his vocal fills from Little Red Rooster) used throughout the demo, very cool!
I was totally going for Wolf's "Ahooo ooooooo, Ahh Ooooo ooooo." So glad it came through. Wolf was amazing.
@@johnbohlinger No way, didn't realize you have your own channel John! Nice, I just subscribed to that too.
Good catch Sinner Train! :-)

Nothing sounds better than a vintage Fender into a vintage Fender. Thanks for the show and tell.
Great tone either way!
Both sound great. The ‘66 has the same warm metallic emphasis to the notes as my ‘82 JV series “62 reissue.” 😁
66 Strats have THE TONE! Hands down my favorite Strat tone out of the bunch!
Don't forget the 63/64 black bottom bobbins
Always a pleasure seeing You playing and doing the gear rundown at premier guitar. Stay safe..
Love this! Thank you John
Killer playing, and a lotta fun to watch!

so did I think it was rosewood
Much love.love your videos love your articles love your playing LOVE YOUR GUITARS
Every time I watch John play a guitar, I want that guitar.
As mostly a Tele & Les Paul guy, I couldn't find a Strat with PU's that were strong enough until I tried the early '70's models.
John, that intro blues was beautiful. Good review too.
Thanks Sean
'66 is F'n awesome!
John Sounds All Right . He's Our Guiding Light Through These Difficult Times , Oh Lord Shine The Glory Of GOD Down On The Blues Guitarists For Evermore . Amen .
Lord shine down the glory of Leo Fender.
Loved the Fender Strap story! Great 👍 playing and tone, thanks John!

Real 64 on e bay looks and plays superb with AY stamped pups
55 will take your head off with its highs. 66 is smooth like butter. Love em both but prefer the 66. Great video
That 55 is so well balanced between all the pickups
Thanks! I love the 50s sound man, almost as much as the 60s. Killer guitars and playing man!

Thanks man your the best!
Love the Howard Finster!
Love Howard. Thank you
This guy rocks.
The 66 seems to have a bit more body to it. Pickups winding?

Great demo! What amp are you running through?
That is really a nice fender strap.
I like the 55 better aesthetically and because of the historical aspect to it but I liked the 66 sound more. I'll take either one please
both of those bad boys sound great ! Nice playing to man!
Amazing guitars, amazing player. Loved that Bakalite twangy sound on the 55 lol
I like that there were some minor mods done to them...means they’re gonna get played and not sit in a case or vault somewhere. ✌🏻🎸
High millage on these. I play them all the time
meanwhile most "collectors" are holding guitars hostage in cases for $5000-$100,000.
I like the 66 better, I like a rosewood finger board.
Mississippi John Bohlinger.
Clever wiring in this '66 strat!
Both great guitars but I'm really loving the '55!
we need a premier guitar John Bohlinger Cribs edition while we're all on lockdown. Take us through your guitars and describe your art... and your denim collection 😂
Gear, art, denim... I'd watch that. Thank you,
Yeah sounded like you were doing Howling Wolf's vocal tag on Smokestack on guitar Ah yes which amp ?
Yup, I was totally going for Wolf's "Ahooo ooooooo, Ahh Ooooo ooooo." I think that was my 66 Deluxe.. if not, then another black face. Thanks
john bohlinger God Bless You For Being Our Shining Light Amen and GOD Bless .
@@trevorgwelch7412 Thanks Trevor... God bless you, amigo. Play on.
Uh oh, playalong opportunity. Guess I have time for a quick jam before work 🤷♂️😋
And personally I prefer the smallet strat head.

Hell, both sound great!! :-)
I like the smaller headstock better
You’re pushing me to buy a 66 I’ve had my eyes on!
Great job howlin John. Those guitars are off the hook as well as your playing.I always enjoy your video's.
Love your playing style, young man. It's cool to get to watch you jam.
So beautiful...
I love the 50s strat but the 66 looks so bloody cool !!
between these two guitars, I like the sound of the 66 better
Both sound great but the 55 with the maple neck just has more top end and more bite.
Both are nice sounding guitars.
66 la logo è stata riapplicata?
Nice, I till want a 66... the year I was born.
What do you want ? A Fender strat ! What was it he wanted ? A Fender strap ! Ahhh !!! One letter makes all the difference !
Strat Quack!
No better clean tone than the fender strat. Something about it
Its OK John, I wanted a G -I-Joe for Christmas, my cheap dad got me a cheap knock-off from somewhere off-shore, it was the cheapest looking thing. At least your grand-mother tried in her way, and you know she did, thats why you still own and use it.
I smile everytime I look at it. That was $5 well spent.
@@johnbohlinger You are Blessed to have it!
I love the look of the maple fingerboard!!! Man, that's a beautiful guitar. Awesome playing as always John!
Rosewood fretboard was introduced in 1958 not 1959. Just because they are old doesn't mean they sound great.
For me '66
Nice chicken pickin Blues, I can hear the rooster crow for day
Is that your own art work behind you John? Nearly as good as your playing which is exceptional as usual. Great video.
two are from Howard Finster, one by my son, one by Lillian Web. Thanks
55 for me.
weird because 55 looks more like an alder not ash
Only his hair dresser knows for sure! 😆 LOL
💚🤘👊💨
That can't be a true '55...the sunburst with the red between the black and yellow was done from mid-'58 onward ( before that it was black to yellow sunburst only ) so that body has to be a '58 or later. Factory refin 60s . I think it's ash.. there is grain, but I could be wrong.
your a great video man to watch, but please!!!!!! get a propper mike setup!!!!!! whats the point of playing???
I'm locked in my house with no other options. I got a phone and that's it.
Too much reverb. It masks the subtle differences you are looking to hear in each guitar. That and the fact that the amp isn’t close mic’d, make this a fun video to show off some very cool guitars but not a great comparison of tone.
Bollinger is the man!!!
Love them both...but strats should only have maple fretboards and ash bodies 😂
Play em out of phase.
They sound the same im jus mad he fucked with the wiring
seriously what's with the hair
seriously what's with the hair
Cut it myself.
