I think you could learn to do just about anything from these wonderful instruction vids that kind people put on the net. Just out of interest (and neither way is 'right'), how did Americans come to pronounce solder like "fodder" and here on this side of the pond we say it like "folder". (and fellow brits, don't say 'its because there's an 'l' in it', otherwise we'd be saying 'would' like "woolled")
Very helpful! I am building a 1/16 scale model Farmhand loader using different sizes of brass angle and I am learning how to solder brass. Tough to hold 1/4" brass to 1/8" brass soldering angle to angle. Your nails in the wood looks like it works pretty well to hold pieces from moving. Also, I think I will get a pencil torch as it heats the material much faster than a small Weller soldering iron. Thank you very much! Nice job on the front bumper by the way!!
Hi, can you tell me what the flux does? And what happens if I do not use it and just heat it up and just use solder? It's for a very small screwhead which goes through a thin plate and will be flush on the backside... Both are brass
Flux allows the solder to flow along the path you apply it to, and really helps make a clean join. That said, I have joined pieces of steel wire by melting them together, but if you get into a small complex shape, as you have to keep things hot, your joins can come apart. Super frustrating.
It's guys like you that help people that are willing and able to comprehend what you are doing, meaning people that has put copper pipes together but never used brass. I am looking at repairing a brass outside light with glass, so that means 1/8 x5/32by1/8 brass channel against a thin sheet of brass. All this helps thank you
Hi Mudslinger, I have bought myself some axid flux. About the solder you used, should it contain any flux at all? I can locate only "rosin core", which apparentky also contains flux. I mainly solder thin brass rods and suare tube (for slot carbox frames and bumpers). I've found 60/40 but no 50/50 and I want t get the ingredients right. Can you set me straight?
I re-watched your video and learned even more than I did the first time. I have been trying to learn to do this and have watched quite a few videos about it and found that there are different opinions on the subject. Your video is clear and to the point, just what I needed. Thank YOU!
Mudslinger what gauge is the solder? I've heard brazing rods can bond them together but I'm new to this so I must say I'm happy to find you. Also I don't know how to bend piping without snapping it. I've subbed you buddy.
hey there rc nerd thanks for your comments and glad it helped as for solder guage i like to use .050 dia.i assume your bending brass so if you dont have a bender try crimping one end and fill the tube with salt, leave alittle bit of room for the salt to move in the tube about 1/2" and crimp the end you just filled and try bending again this will keep the walls from collapsing you can also heat the tube to soften the metal.also check out my how to bend brass video if you havent already.ive never tried brazing rods,i know you will need alot more heat to melt the brazing rod.hope this helps
thank you muddslinger thats very helpful can you use sand to bend the tube? love your videos check out bunznmepockets . he's brilliant.. Godspeed Buddy
@tleander40 thanx for the comments and am glad this helped you out as for my fingers i cut them off at work,i look at it as less fingers to get caught in the doors haha.
Hi! I love this very clear video. What i am looking for is a way to solder brass without the silver color! Is there any possibility to do all in the brass color as you know? Thanks!!
In trying to silver solder 6mm round brass bar but can't get it hot enough for the solder to run. I'm using a butane torch. Is this the best gas or is there a hotter gas I can use ? It's frustrating
Now I know I'm going to sound like a complete dumbass, But what can you do with this? I've only been back in the hobby for a year and arsed about with plastic-based cars.
This is great, never used or done anything like this but I guess I could use this to make the back end for my scx10 and possibly a trailer for it? Anyways thanks for this, going to add to my favourites.
Hi, can you tell me what the flux does? And what happens if I do not use it and just heat it up and just use solder? It's for a very small screwhead which goes through a thin plate and will be flush on the backside... Both are brass
This is frustrating me for sure. I bought brass tubing, a bender, flux, solder, a torch, and various other bits. I'm trying to solder brass tubing just like in the video.Maybe I have the wrong flux or solder. The solder never gets between the two pieces. it just puddles up and rolls off. I've tried to get it as hot as possible. Even red hot, burned through the brass actually. Would like to know what I'm doing wrong here before I spend any more money. Thanks!
muddslinger Well I'm not sure, it says water soluble on the lid. no mention of acid or acid free... I'm going to the hardware store today so I'll pick up the kind you have, and try again. Thanks!
hey kcg. i like using tube for my bumpers or roll cages for 2 reasons. 1 its lighter and easier to work with and 2 after time and a few roll overs it will show some dents for realism. cheers
hey there paulgabrielle1.all i do is eyeball the center of the pipe and use either a flat skinny files edge or a triangle file to put a notch in the center then use the round file this will hold the file in the center and yes wash the finished product with lacquer or something equivilant.
Excellent work. I have an old kerosene burner and there is a stay that has come looses inside exactly the same pieces that you showing here. What flux means shall I use to brass with tin. Hope for some response.. Regard Michael.🙏
hey there xxzxfusionxzxx.im not sure that it would hold up to some nitro flips and crashes but if you put enough bracing in it just might take the abuse your better off using brake line and brazing it,brazing uses the same principal but you need a little more heat and some brazing rod which already has the flux built into the brazing rod.hope this helps.
Love ur video for us guys or gals who dont know about brass 👍🤙i have an old harley brass lighter and i notice it kinda leaks from the bottom is this same method ok to seal the bottom of my brass lighter
Brought searching how to solder brass metal...specifically i want to solder the broken post of my vape tank...its made of brass according to the seller..it doesn't have warranty so i decided to just solder it..
Wow!😱 You make it seem so easy. Question. Have a (roughly 7 lbs) antique tilting mirror that hangs in its frame by a bolt on each side. The brasses are 1 of kind irreplaceable solid hand carved bird wings. Anyway... Moving it to another room, one of the bolts snapped. I'm just broken hearted. Can I use this method to attach a brass replacement bolt to the existing finial? Will it hold the 7 lbs weight of the mirror? I'd really like to know your opinion, and or any suggestions you have. Thanks so much for posting this video 🙂
i have the same benzo torch but it no longer works ,i think its not holding the butain or the twist valve is not properly working anymore and leaking ,,anyways, can you solder brass or cooper using aluminium rods?
I was searching for a tutorial with exactly same brass tubes and rod, in same sizes. I didn’t buy any welding tools yet and wonder it would be also possible with soldering iron, or if it’s necessary to use blow torch. I saw your video then went to DIY shop but they’re saying i wouldn’t need anything like gel (that you put on the tube before hitting with torch), and said it’ll be enough to weld with just 60W soldering iron. it is confusing.. Thank you very much for your tutorials, it is so great.
Need to know exactly where the camera is centered, work exactly there. Otherwise, too much mystery and magic to watch. Mentioning "weld" in this "soldering" context is confusing.
Hi. I just found your channel. I love how clear you explain how process work. Make things looks so much easier. I do have a question if you can find some time to answer. Is any way to blend the color of the brass with the color of the solder? Maybe making the solder darker. I can darken the brass with ease but I cannot darken the solder. Can you help me please? Thank you.
Thank you. I am interested in this because I want to see if I can't get decent TV reception from rabbit ears antenna without having to blow 200$ on one of the larger ones that may or may not work better. I scraped the paint off a patch of the telescoping antenna parts and I am pretty sure it is brass. I plan to replace the two adjustable antennas with much much larger pieces of brass tubing and see if it does not improve reception because at the moment I can get almost nothing.
How would you add a way to use a bolt to hold down the part you made? Would you use the brass inserts dubro makes? I made a wing mount for my large scale t/c and just trying to figure out how to mount it now. Thanks.
SO HELPFUL, !!! THANKS FOR THE VIDEO. NOW I HAVE A QUESTION, IAM A FASHION DESIGNER WORKING ON A BRASS BIG NECKLACE PIECE, WHAT SHOULD I USE IN ORDER TO GET A YELLOW OR BRASSY COLOR FINISH IN THE JOINT, LED SOLDER FINISH IS SILVER.
Are there welded seams on brass ships clocks that can separate in the future? The clock is from about 1969. It looks like the seam may or may not have come apart.
great how to video. i have a couple of questions. when you cove a brass pipe, how do you find center on the pipe before filing, and how do you keep it in the grove?? also, after building and befor paint do you wash everything with degreaser to get any grease and such off the thing your painting??
I have tryed 4 times and failed, my fith try worked but the brass has blackend and the solder has mostly puddled at the back. Any advice would be apreciated thanks.
Excellent video!!! that is exactly what I was looking for!! I'd like to start working with brass and know nothing about it. You are the man! May I ask what you did to your poor index finger?
Nice work. I'm doing brass railings on a 1:12 scale boat. Problem is I can make a good joint BUT.... BUT....BUT when I add the next pieces 1.5 inches away the HEAT I apply for the second joint MELTS THE FIRST JOINT. Makes me nuts. HELP ! ! !
Man, 11 years ago this guy just recorded two of the best how to videos for modelers I've ever seen and then just wandered off into the sunset.

Your vid is amazing :) I was looking around to see how to solder brass for jewelry making and I'm pretty sure I learned all I need from you. Thanks!
Same!

Where can I find brass c channel in the size of your tube? I need tiny c channel.
Clear As Mudd😉💯💯
Micro Mark sells a thick pad for soldering on. It comes with a bunch of T pins to support the parts just like the nails do in this vid. Works great!

'Lumberland' price tag on the flux. That was probably purchased in '60s or '70s in British Columbia.

Rc-Nerd sure sand will work,
Thank you buddy I'll try that. Your the best.
Most helpful video I've found thank you for posting and sharing your knowledge .
Thank you!
Lead-tin solder is much weaker than antimony-tin solder. Won't hold much strain and will break.
What's the best way to prevent already soldered joints from unfurling when soldering another joint close by
This is the simpliest explanation I've ever found! Thank YOU sir! 🙏🙏🙏
Can someone please tell me how to solder a brass candlestick back together without having a lot of silver solder showing? Thank you!
Is this strong enough for art projects? Like small sculptures, etc.?
Hello. Can you sauder a Crack in brass. Wil it be stong enough. It’s not broken just stress crack. Thanks
Thank you, very nice basic video. I needed a refresher for some home DIY work. :)
what torch is that... how many degrees does the heat have to bee
Why are there no solder type couplings and T fittings and elbows for non-threaded 1/8 od brass tubes?
How do you cope cut it or whatever you said. I wanna cut my brass tubing so I can joint to round pieces of tubing into a capital T shape
@tleander40 thanx for the comments and am glad this helped you out as for my fingers i cut them off at work,i look at it as less fingers to get caught in the doors haha.

Hii
This is muhammed chaudhari

I want to know What material have you used?
Does that tubing bend without kinking? Or did you fill it with sand or something?
In trying to silver solder 6mm round brass bar but can't get it hot enough for the solder to run. I'm using a butane torch. Is this the best gas or is there a hotter gas I can use ? It's frustrating

Amén.
how do you de de-solder yellow brass from toilet connection ??
Dude, what happened to your finger? 👆 Ouch!
Excellent work, thank you.
What about strength of this soldring??
nice tutorial ...
Do you have to use a torch? Will an electric soldering iron work, for this type of project? Thank you, in advanced, your video definitely educated me.
It will if using a Low-Temp-Melt Solder like TIKS…
GOD DAMN IT THIS IS DARD!
But what is wrong with acid flux.
Is it normal electrical soldering wire?
This is great, never used or done anything like this but I guess I could use this to make the back end for my scx10 and possibly a trailer for it? Anyways thanks for this, going to add to my favourites.
I use a soldering iron with 60/40 rosin core, I’ve gotten were I can make my joints look like they were tig welded. Takes lots of practice and solder!

i use the acid paste flux.

Do you have soldering wire?
how strong is it?
Thanks so much for the Best Soldering video. I have watched a lot of them! You are the Man!
Hi sir what kind of soldering to you use and where to get it I wanted to try it out
Would you recommend the tube or a solid brass cylinder for a roll cage?
I'm thinking solid will be harder but holo tube will be lighter.

Hi
thank you for your video I have 2 questions:
what brand of pencil torch are you using?
what material do you use as support? wood?

Nice video. I've been scouring for this information and all I ever found was dealing with wires and electronics. Argh.
Sweet video! Thanks for the tips it's great to see Otis Driftwood from The Devil's Rejects making DIY Videos.
How would you add a way to use a bolt to hold down the part you made? Would you use the brass inserts dubro makes? I made a wing mount for my large scale t/c and just trying to figure out how to mount it now. Thanks.
Nice video and thanks for the posting. This was the first video I came across for small rod welding specifically for making R/C car roll cages.
How strong are these joins? Could I break them if I applied a bit of pressure with two fingers?
How about aluminum.
This was great. Although 10 years old now it’s still very informative thank you
Can you please tell me which soldering rod is used? Material of the soldering rod?

Great video!! A while back I was trying to solder two small square tubing pieces at a 90 degree and no it did not stick i'll try again.
Are there welded seams on brass ships clocks that can separate in the future? The clock is from about 1969. It looks like the seam may or may not have come apart.
Hey man, what's in your torch?
I got prtty much the same but it was in a bulk package given to me and it doesn't seem to work like yours!
Great video!
Super educational and I love the point of view camera action.
You mentioned steam engines. Are you a steam engineer?
Hey Mud, if I'm doing this with flux-core electrical solder, do I still need to use acid flux?
Thanks 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you appreciate it, I don’t understand why someone would thumbs down this.
Great view, job well done. Sooo many possibilities to explore in my art now. Many thanks.
great how to video. i have a couple of questions. when you cove a brass pipe, how do you find center on the pipe before filing, and how do you keep it in the grove?? also, after building and befor paint do you wash everything with degreaser to get any grease and such off the thing your painting??

WHEN HE NEEDS SOME BRASS WIRE HE JUST REACHES UP A PLUCKS A STRAND FROM HIS FACE :) THANKS FOR VID.
can Brass coins be solder together and how strong will it hold ,im thinking about creating a belt buckle
That was really very helpful. Thankyou for the tips and advice
Excellent video!!! that is exactly what I was looking for!! I'd like to start working with brass and know nothing about it. You are the man! May I ask what you did to your poor index finger?
looking for this info for a marking gauge project...big help thanks for posting
Btw, nice bumper, and you gave me a idea for my rc monster truck. Thanks.
What brand of pencil torch is he using? Where are they available? Thanks
do you ever do a break test to know how strong the joint really is? that "T" joint has me wondering
Thank you! Off to build bumpers for my crawler now😎
Great video, Why do you use a mini torch rather than a soldering gun?
thank you !
Very good tutorial! I'm subscribing. MiF
Nice work. I'm doing brass railings on a 1:12 scale boat. Problem is I can make a good joint BUT.... BUT....BUT when I add the next pieces 1.5 inches away the HEAT I apply for the second joint MELTS THE FIRST JOINT. Makes me nuts. HELP ! ! !
probably too late to help you, but just put a wet rag on the one you dont want to melt. It will keep it cool enough while you heat the other side.
