One of the reasons I ended up in San Francisco. Back in 2000 it was that easy to find an apartment - saw the for rent sign, met the landlord, he showed us the apt, asked for a check deposit and he handed us the keys on the spot - took all of 10 mins. 2 bedroom, 1.5 baths, wood burning fireplace, and parking all for $1500 bucks and one block from Golden Gate Park. SF was magic back then.
Oh the music is so HAUNTING here! The flute, her finding the apartment, the sense of knowing from Mrs Madrigal’s gaze - it all has a feeling of destiny unfolding in the narrative.
RIP, Anna Madrigral, as in Medieval. Olympia Dukakis has always been the actor that I felt fit the role over these 4 decades. Thank you, Amistead Maupin, for giving her the nod for Olympia to deliver an amazing finish to your Tales of the City. And to her family with those that loved her I extend my deepest condolences.
She is a great actress, but she was not really believable as a man! A travesty, like all trannies, but the wrong way round. How can a woman play a man pretending to be a woman? It was Victor Victoria!
I watched this TV series in 1993 (and then subsequently read the (then) six books of the Tales of the City series). It took me 13 years to finally visit San Francisco and yes, it lived up to my high expectations.
"Thank you!", "Yes, you should." Bizarrely, that line sums up so many interactions/situations I've been lucky enough to find myself in, first in the City, then later in Santa Monica/Westside.
Glorious news! Armistead Maupin has written a new book! Mona of the Manor. To be published March 2024. Let's bring back Cloe Webb for the TV Miniseries!❤
So in the 70s you could get an Apartment in San Fransisco with any random low paying job? Yes you could. In 1978 the nicest most upscale places in the city were $400-$500 a month.
Indeed. This wasn't a fantasy series (a joke for the younger folk). My 1st apt., circa 1975, was 150.00 a month, & huge, outside Washington, D.C. For reals.
I moved to San Francisco in 1985. First apartment, a huge 1 bedroom, near Golden Gate Park. $300 a month. I had $800 total at the time, and had just gotten a job waiting tables. Yes, it was possible then. And like Mary Ann, tens of thousands came to the City with not a lot of money, and could start a new life from scratch like the character did. It was a magical time despite AIDS ravaging the City.
this reminds me of Mulholland Dr (It should be the other way round, since Mulholland Dr was filmed in 2000 or 2001) this young woman meeting her landlady. just call me Coco. Everybody else does.
ACORN.TV service SUCKS. My Amazon Prime and NetFlix work fine.....nothing but buffering from Acorn.TV...have not been able to watch a SINGLE show or episode.

I so adore Olympia Dukakis's performance in Tales of the City. Thank you so much Ms. Dukakis.

Olympia Dukakis in a truly wonderful performance. RIP

Same!😃
the mystery, the wonder, the magic of that place
I just heard the news about Olympia, R.I.P. Au revoir to the only person I can imagine being Anna Madrigal.
"Thank you!", "Yes, you should."

Yes the music is amazing. This is probably my favorite scene in the whole series.
One of my favorite authors and the film's that followed. God bless Armistead Maupin!
Fell in love with the Netflix version. Now, I find out there's an original.
This is my FAV! I’ve watched it so many times over the years. ❤️
One of my favourite TV series. Have watched it umpteen times.
Alas, Olympia is no more, but I'm so glad she was amongst us!
R.I.P. Olympia.
R.I.P Olympia
GOT ALL OF IT ON DISC...NEVER CAN BE BEAT.....
It is a wonderful series. Loved the books (and they are a Must Read, BTW). I think I've now found my Summer Binge.
I love the series. But still haven't read the stories. 😱

I had a large studio in the Marina in 1989 that cost $600 month. Hard to believe now. Of course, it did collapse in the earthquake that year.
@@KM-nw7be Large Studios in San Diego in 1989 were only $300. Now they are $900-$1100.

Thanks, looks good. 😎📺📺✌✌
I can’t wait.
This series was actually shot on 16mm...let's hope Channel 4 kept the original film elements. It seems overdue for a remastering!
