THIS is the kind of stuff I need! The thinking, the strategy from point to point, the play by play commentary on what is working, what it not. Thanks. Keep 'em coming!
Wow this might be my favorite tennis video on UA-cam right now. Love the insider look into teams’ strategies! Looking forward to more videos like this!
Great presentation. These are exactly the types of conversations that my partner and I had when we used to play tournament tennis. For returns, a lot of times the discussion will be simply to get the ball in play and make the other team earn the point. For serving, the statement "T serve" or "Out wide serve" shouldn't be interpreted to mean a pin point serve on the line. A serve that lands within 3 feet of those locations is usually very effective. I also like that this video shows that all levels of players get nervous, even if it's just a practice match. Discussing the nervousness with your partner is a great way of working thru it. The only shot that I didn't see used, and should be used especially when the net man is poaching so much, is the lob return of serve. Even if you don't win the point with the lob return, it gives the net man one more possible return to think about when he is considering a poach. Again, this video is full of great discussions between partners about what is happening and how to counter what their opponents are doing as well as taking advantage of any opponents weakness.
Kent Lewis thanks for the feedback Kent! Yes, we should have absolutely chipped, lobbed and pushed forward a whole lot more!! Adjustments were made in part 2. Stay tuned.
InfiniteQuest86 I’m a big fan of the new Pure Strike, best racquet on the market. (Babolat may or may not have made me say that through contractual obligations 😉) -Nate
I just love your approach with the video! This is all I wanted; hit hit, talk talk. It flows beautifully! I have my first doubles match tomorrow and thanks to you I’m more excited than nervous now! By the way doubles looks way more fun, Singles is torture compared to this.
Great stuff! Kevin is a beast! The combo of a heavy kick serve plus aggressive net play is tough to beat. Staying back works when the server can take control of the point with the forehand. If the server cannot do that, then it is a problematic approach.
I love this! Match play vs Scott and Nate...brilliant! Being a lower rating player, this helps me so much as to what goes thru your minds and strategies. Thank you and would love to see more of this matchup! 4 great teachers of the game! Next vid...mixed doubles?
Wow how intense. I never realized there is so much involved in a doubles match. So much suspense. Have to wait for Game of Thrones for a week and you guys leaving a cliffhanger too. Please please post the rest of the match tomorrow.
Awesome content again! Perfect for me to watch as i've started to play more 4.5 doubles.. need a primer on returning serves like Kevins' (i faced a guy last weekend whose serve was less intense but similar placement and shape)!
Kevin is really serving well here. His kicker is just killing them. I don't understand why Matt and Scott is not chipping the ball back and at least getting it into play.
Ya Kevin and I were discussing that the other day....they had a lot more trouble with his righty kicker than my lefty slice, which is a little unusual.
In retrospect Scott and I agreed, had there been a second set, we would have gone to some chip in charge and lob returns. Kevin’s ball was kicking a ton, sometimes its just being plain ole stubborn and assuming the timing will come. Thanks for watching Wally
Thanks guys that was fun to watch! Surprised to see so many service winners but that may because it was hard court and not clay, which I'm used to, and also because you've never played against each other. Ian poached well and I think that was critical.
Honestly, none of us have played regularly in years and years. We're all coaching and making content full time! Return games were definitely not sharp. Thanks for watching, Vernon!
I love the commentary! Something every doubles team can relate to is all the strategy we try and come up with every point and all the subsequent justifications we make when it goes horribly wrong 😂 Great stuff!!
Great hands at the net, Ian! Helps a lot when you have a good server like Kevin with you. Have a feeling the PYC guys are not playing as good as they can, but I still think you would have them - Ian I wish I had that kind of touch...I'm definitely a singles player lol!
PlayYourCourt.com looking forward to it. Had a dubs practice last night before my club’s first league matches this month - I’m so out of practice at the net (swinging at volleys, not confident poaching, etc.) It’s a completely different game to singles. Hate that I’m not as good at dubs but it’s a lot of fun!
Ian's poach is smooth, good timing. I know Kevin is fast, but on this video, he's really fast and good anticipation. Let's see what will Scott & Nate bring on the next video once get on their grooves and shake off whatever holding them so far on this match.
Ian has the perfect game for doubles of covering the angles and making the opponent win with tough shots. He has such good placement of the ball. Kevin’s serve is really hard to return and he has nice shots. I think his game is better fit for singles since he’s very quick and can use his athletic ability and big hitting more
My partner and I talk a lot between points like we are discussing strategy but really we are just gossiping or planning where we are going for coffee after the match.
A Roper Haha..one of our favorite techniques to calm nerves is small talk. “What 🍺 are you enjoying after the match?” “Scott why is your head so big”. Laughing is the best way to kill those pesky nerves. We def needed more small talk. -Nate. Thanks for watching A Roper
Miguel Lim As long as its before the server is in motion and doesn’t create a time violation. It is servers pace though, so our call was cutting it realllly close. Great question Miguel. Thanks for watching.
Great volleys by Ian where they are placed well and they stay low. Like how Ian uses the slice return effectively. I would love to have Kevin's nasty kick serve that those guys were having problems with. I suffer from the issue that Kevin was having that a lot of overheads that should be put-away overheads somehow keep coming back.
Thumbs down for splitting this up, Ian, and keeping us waiting till Wednesday for part-2 (which means I get to see it only on Thursday, my time)! Nah, can't bring myself give you guys a dislike... though I was sorely tempted, for above reason! This is super stuff, guys! Kevin and Ian look like terrific dubs players. Hope Scott and Nate found their bearings and made a fight of it.
Hi Ian! At 8:02 you see Scott and Nate at the net, but Scott is 2 or 3 m behind Nate, I guess to cover lobs. Would you recommend that, knowing that you open the field for a short cross ball? PS: Great video, btw ;-)
Great question, Aaron! If you watch professional doubles you'll see that there's usually some "stagger" between two players when they're both at the net. What you said is exactly right: one player is being the bully and getting really close to try and finish the point while the other is in a slightly more defensive position in case a lob goes up. This isn't something I usually recommend for amateur players as it can lead to confusion.....but executed well its really effective. That sharp, cross court dipper is a really tough shot....Scott is giving it to me unless I prove I can hit it (which I never did this match). -Ian
Nate, you got a bad wheel? I know you were nursing an injury (and big ups that you're not complaining about it or even mentioning it), but on one short return to the deuce side, you seemed to be running up a bit gingerly.
Kevin is 5.0? he put 1 return on serve forehand into the net (actually into his own court) and 2 more out the court by about 15 feet in the second game, and those serves were coming to him at about 120 kmh.
Interesting, we used to play only with one player at the net. Wounder ift this would be bettr for those players as well. Also, the return player should go more often for long line, this would stop Kevins poaching attempts.
Andreas Schulz adjustments are part of every match. The hindsight’s are always valuable for the rematch. Scott and I certainly made a couple corrections but were they the right ones? Stay tuned. Thanks for watching Andreas! 🙌🏼
If you've ever played USTA, know your own actual computer ranking, and seen yourself on video, you'd know these are 5.0 dubs players. Ian is not an impressive technical player in terms of the way his strokes look, but he is clearly a strong dubs player who has strong volleys and lobs and hits spots more often than not. Kevin looks technically stronger but makes more mistakes. Neither look like 4.5's I've seen play who I can at least compete with....if I was on this court they'd be hitting at me every single time.
Hi guys, talking is easy right :) I am following some HS Tennis and I see those younger players play with much crispier, better offense, and no excuses ha ha. I probably think these HS players are around 4.5 or 5.0 and you guys are around 4.0.
Haha...come on man. I run a high performance academy filled with High school players and there’s more excuses in a day than a principle hears in a year. 🤔 Honestly a well groomed Jr. should be crisper and have more offense. For one they are a lot younger and two they are still “in the machine” training as competitors. At some point as a coach we have to make a decision to take off the hat as a “player” and put on the hat of a coach. What you don’t realize are these same “big hitters” get beat consistently by players who simply think and strategize better than they do. Games in the noggin my man. 🤯 -Nate
They are either super rusty or they are really 4.0 players, no matter how well they know the principles of the game. And they cannot move at all, super slow their footwork.
otogigamer your not seeing the serve correctly my man. He hits a heavy serve, that and it combined with the “active” courts of Indian Wells and it was super tough. We’re taking the ball on the rise...hence why it’s not at our shoulders.
My goodness, if you talk strategy at a social tennis club in England you get snide comments from your opposition I've played at 11 clubs , I keep moving from club to club hopping that I will find a club where the players are aware that doubles is a completely different game to singles eg you talk to one another for starters , you serve further out and there are patterns that you follow Your not 2 players playing singles together and not communicating through fear of upsetting the other guy So many arrogant players in our social tennis clubs over here , they all play doubles but all only watch singles They guard the tram lines as there scared to get passed down the line and so can't reach any easy Poch shots at the centre of the net I've quit playing at these clubs as I want to play high level doubles tennis but you can't play well if you don't play as a team I'm 56 years old , started playing 10 years ago , I watched doubles players and strategy Learnt all the grips and practised free hitting over the parks with my freind then I play matches at the clubs with people that don't even know about grip changes or simple basic positioning , most of them couldn't even see how good my ground stroke and serve techniques were They were mostly older people that had made up their own strokes and their own strategy since the day that they began to play Lots of them hit the ball really flat or try some ugly looking slice then you in turn hit them a nice topspin shot which lands right in their hitting zone or bounces high on them Oh my days it's so frustrating it appears that my success and hard work and thought process have worked against me lol
GARY EDWARDS solid insights, thanks for sharing. It is a strange phenomenon that the vast majority of those playing recreational tennis enjoy playing dubs but prefer to watch singles!? Keep grinding Gary and continue to work through communication and playing proper doubles, eventually those around you will appreciate its effectiveness. Thanks for watching!
I love how happy Ian was after that first poach. "I love doubles so much"
Not much else on earth makes me more happy, haha -Ian
The guy genuinely loves the game! Heck I couldn’t help but smile seeing his exuberance...even if we lost the game. 😊👍🏼 -Nate
More! More!! More!!!
There are so many precious pearls of info here I found myself pausing, rewinding, and playing again. Now I know how much communication is necessary and the observation and strategizing after each point.
I feel a UA-cam tennis instructor tournament coming on!!! Who is next... Crunch Time? OTI? This is amazing stuff!!, thank u so very much!!!
So happy you're finding value in these matches, Sinbad! More on the way!
Gotta say Sinbad, it’s feedback like yours that makes me love this job and get fired up for the next project. Thanks so much for the kind words. 🙏🏻
OMG this is awesome! Not only is this fun to watch, but the dramatic music and the cutaways are just killing it! UA-cam Oscar for video editing ;)
Thanks so much, Andrew!
Essential Tennis did an amazing job with the vid. Huge thanks to the production team 🥇💪🏼
0:30 haha, the double faults don't count on the score bord, I like it.
....home court advantage? Haha...
.....wait....a.....second 😳
These are incredibly helpful to watch.
Playing with the mic packs to get the between point strategy talk especially.
Glad you enjoyed it, Ryan!
Thanks Ryan. More to come!
Please continue uploading these types of videos, alongside your tutorials of course, because they are most entertaining to watch....It is impossible to get bored with these....
Saad Dilmohamud Thank you Saad! Glad your enjoying them. We will definitely be focusing a lot more energy on this format in the near future!
The suspenseful music at the end was epic.
Thanks for watching, aglom!
THIS is the kind of stuff I need! The thinking, the strategy from point to point, the play by play commentary on what is working, what it not. Thanks. Keep 'em coming!
Glad it was helpful!
This series is so fun. Love hearing the thought process.
Vo-iD Projects 🙏🏻❤️🤙🏼
Omg, now i want ian volley and kevin kick serve!!
What a good volley in 2 - 1\15 0!!
Ian's net game is monster! He's a natural doubles player, and his righty partners have to love having a lefty on the team.
LOVE THIS. OK this right here an old fashioned grudge match. Keep. Doin. This.
Wow this might be my favorite tennis video on UA-cam right now. Love the insider look into teams’ strategies! Looking forward to more videos like this!
imlazy77 Thanks for watching imlazy77. We had a blast working w/ ES. Stay tuned, lots more to come.
Glad you enjoyed it, Lazy!

The only shot that I didn't see used, and should be used especially when the net man is poaching so much, is the lob return of serve.
Stay tuned.
Great to hear the strategies, thanks for putting this out there.
Woohoo, the fun is finally here! Keep it coming. Next is mixed dubs I hope ???
enystn no mixed doubles but that’s an excellent idea. Maybe in the near future!
This was great to watch. Thanks for the great collab!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ian's net play and kevin's serve, great tandem
Watching this with a big smile on my face like a kid in a candy store...
That's how we felt playing, Raul!
Love it!!!
These videos help a lot. I have a tournament tmr and see how you guys worked through the nerves and tactics is awesome
i love hearing the strategy and feedback!
Very, very helpful upload! Please continue with similar content, the commentary between points and games offers invaluable insight!
You got it, Leo. More on the way!
We were thrilled to be a part of it, glad you enjoyed it. More to come!
I love that Pure Strike racquet.
InfiniteQuest86 I’m a big fan of the new Pure Strike, best racquet on the market. (Babolat may or may not have made me say that through contractual obligations 😉) -Nate

By the way doubles looks way more fun, Singles is torture compared to this.
Excellent again. So useful for me to watch and listen to what you are thinking. Thanks.
Great stuff! Kevin is a beast! The combo of a heavy kick serve plus aggressive net play is tough to beat. Staying back works when the server can take control of the point with the forehand. If the server cannot do that, then it is a problematic approach.

Lance Kaneshiro Really appreciate the kind feedback and thrilled to know your enjoying it Lance! Thanks for watching.
Hey! Can't wait for Part 2!!!!
Coming tomorrow, Mark!
Those kick serves were on point
Yes. Can't wait for part 2
Coming on Wednesday, Mike!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow how intense. I never realized there is so much involved in a doubles match.
So much suspense. Have to wait for Game of Thrones for a week and you guys leaving a cliffhanger too.
Please please post the rest of the match tomorrow.
Doubles is AWESOME for that reason, Prashant. A huge amount of strategy and planning for every point. Part 2 is coming Wednesday!
Thrilled you enjoyed it Prashant. We didn’t have any ice dragons on court but we will certainly will take the GOT compliment!
Totally fun to watch with the commentary
Glad you enjoyed it, Jim!
Thanks for watching Jim!
Play yourself some doubles! Ian wasn't kidding... Nice serving Kevin! Hope you guys even out the series. Like a Davis Cup rubber, Kevin and Nate next?
You'll find out on Wednesday!
Awesome content again! Perfect for me to watch as i've started to play more 4.5 doubles.. need a primer on returning serves like Kevins' (i faced a guy last weekend whose serve was less intense but similar placement and shape)!
Krishna Murali thanks for watching Krishna! Kevin’s serve was definitely tough...especially in high bouncing Indian Wells!
Totally agree “Matt” did an awful job.
-Nate
In retrospect Scott and I agreed, had there been a second set, we would have gone to some chip in charge and lob returns. Kevin’s ball was kicking a ton, sometimes its just being plain ole stubborn and assuming the timing will come. Thanks for watching Wally
Wally Friend , they need to move more into the kicker serve, step forward.
Love it...great job guys...Ian was a beast at the net
Crunch Time Coaching Thanks for watching. Ian was definitely tough at net. Mayyyybe we should have taken the net away by moving in. 🤔🤷🏽♂️🤣
In-match interviews & analysis during doubles. YES! :-)
Courts were def fast but as Ian said....returns were simply not very sharp.. Thanks for watching Vernon!
Exciting!!! Ian and Kevin feel very comfortable in their team.
It was a lot of fun!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Nice video guys!!!!
David Qiu thank you David! 🙏🏻🍻
That’s kinda sad to watch this video after Kevin decided to leave Essential Tennis
Just curious... what club? (looks a lot like Palm Valley Country Club near IWTG)
Awesome stuff....miking up everyone was an awesome idea! Keep it up with the great content.
Glad you enjoyed it, Will. More on the way!
Thanks Will! 🙏🏻🍻🤙🏼
I love the commentary! Something every doubles team can relate to is all the strategy we try and come up with every point and all the subsequent justifications we make when it goes horribly wrong 😂 Great stuff!!
Glad you're enjoying it, Nick! More on the way soon.
We’re still looking for the right justifications after those first 5 games. 😞. Thanks for watching hung Nick!
I want more of this awesome video keep them rolling
More on the way, Luis!
Love it! Thanks Luis
Great hands at the net, Ian! Helps a lot when you have a good server like Kevin with you. Have a feeling the PYC guys are not playing as good as they can, but I still think you would have them - Ian I wish I had that kind of touch...I'm definitely a singles player lol!
imrizzle83 We definitely needed to make adjustments earlier than we did. Ian and Kevin were tough though. Hats off to em. Lots more to come!
PlayYourCourt.com looking forward to it. Had a dubs practice last night before my club’s first league matches this month - I’m so out of practice at the net (swinging at volleys, not confident poaching, etc.)
It’s a completely different game to singles. Hate that I’m not as good at dubs but it’s a lot of fun!
Very instructive 😊
Doubles is where the real hype is that’s where u can expose good players no matter how good they are haha awesome content
Glad you enjoyed it, Abstract!
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it! 😁
Doubles is tennis for old people.
Love it, make more video like that.
That was fun. I hope you guys go three sets.
mjw2080 appreciate it, thrilled you enjoyed the first segment of our doubles match. 🤙🏼
This is brilliant.
Al HassanT Glad to hear your enjoying the project our teams collaborated on. Thanks for the feedback Al!
Ian's poach is smooth, good timing. I know Kevin is fast, but on this video, he's really fast and good anticipation. Let's see what will Scott & Nate bring on the next video once get on their grooves and shake off whatever holding them so far on this match.
AesBinz thanks for watching AesBinz! Kevin is very fast indeed. ⚡️
Where is this court? looks really nice
Ian has the perfect game for doubles of covering the angles and making the opponent win with tough shots. He has such good placement of the ball. Kevin’s serve is really hard to return and he has nice shots. I think his game is better fit for singles since he’s very quick and can use his athletic ability and big hitting more
Who said "arriba"?
Great video btw!
Serving to the bh everytime, and win the point before they return or in the net. Simplified tactics
LeiteriN1 we definitely needed a adjustment. Chips, lobs etc. maybe it will happen in part 2. Stay tuned.
Is it OK for the receiving team to interrupt the server once they see their formation, to discuss tactics? Just curious if it's frowned upon.
Miguel Lim As long as its before the server is in motion and doesn’t create a time violation. It is servers pace though, so our call was cutting it realllly close. Great question Miguel. Thanks for watching.
How was it 40 - 0 when they started with a double fault?
Oops...
Good question!! 🤔
Loving these vids 👌
Glad you enjoyed it! We appreciate you watching 🙏🏻🤙🏼
Appreciate your thoughts, Shawn!
5:13, what that serve really in? saw it like 4 inches to the right of the line.
Cesarini77 I was hoping it was out. Sounds like we should replay it 😉. Thanks for watching!
Love the new content
Great to hear that, Blackwing!
Is this 5.0 level combined or individual 5.0?
2.5 comment but combined with our response...definitely 5.0. Thanks for watching 🍻.
I've watched Ian play for many years. He isn't a great singles player, but he IS a much smarter doubles player. (same as myself)
If only the difference between my singles and doubles game was "smartness". That would be WAY easier to fix 😅
They did make a fight of it! Don't worry, it will be worth the wait :-)
Great serve Kevin! But that grunt when you serve haha
this is great stuff.
Thanks for watching!
-Ian
Any plans for more doubles matches in the new format, Ian?
Absolutely! Coming soon.
Did you guys choose Ian-ad Kevin-deuce because it's easier to protect wide with two forehands? Just wondering.
Simply where we felt most comfortable at the moment, Pulp. I've played both sides a lot, I think Kevin was more used to deuce side. -Ian
Which city n state did you guys play these matches?
sagnik singha Indian Wells, California. Thanks for watching!
so what was the final score of the Ian & Kevin slugfest?
Hi all, just a quick question that Is those guys 5.0 each?
Does Ian have a topspin backhand?
Yup. Doesn't stand up to competition when I'm not playing much. -Ian
did kevin return a serve? looked like he tried to hit a winner every time
Better than Game of Thrones. Addictive.
Love it. More coming.
That may be the greatest complement we could receive. Don’t worry ES...winter is coming!!
how times have changed...
Ian during the first game: "FEED ME."
What UTR is 5.0?
Nate, you got a bad wheel? I know you were nursing an injury (and big ups that you're not complaining about it or even mentioning it), but on one short return to the deuce side, you seemed to be running up a bit gingerly.
Yes, he was dealing with some pain :-(
Yeah I wasn’t exactly out sprinting Frankenstein was I ? Lol 😂. Just a lot of wear and tear on the body my man. Thanks for watching Andrew!
-Nate
Kevin is 5.0? he put 1 return on serve forehand into the net (actually into his own court) and 2 more out the court by about 15 feet in the second game, and those serves were coming to him at about 120 kmh.
Ian's doubles game is serious LOL!!!!
I clicked like right after Ian's first two poaching.
Lol Ian just casually bringing in a waterboarding reference
That's definitely NOT what I had in mind, haha
NTRP 4.5. But it was entertaining!
Secret battle of the postures. Ian permanently hunched over back against Nate who looks like he swallowed a surfboard.
Why is first double fault doesn’t count the point?
Lol 1:05 looked like some tennis friends of me they always forget to go in the middle and then you get all the games
Thanks for watching, Bart!
Yeah...about that. Totally misread the racquet face. My bad Scotty....wait he did hit the ball high directly to Ian!! Apology retracted. 😡😉
To talk to each other during a point is an automatic point for the other team
Interesting, we used to play only with one player at the net. Wounder ift this would be bettr for those players as well. Also, the return player should go more often for long line, this would stop Kevins poaching attempts.
Andreas Schulz adjustments are part of every match. The hindsight’s are always valuable for the rematch. Scott and I certainly made a couple corrections but were they the right ones? Stay tuned. Thanks for watching Andreas! 🙌🏼
Was it hard
Hey Ed! What are you asking about? Love your videos!
Looks like 4.0 to me. Scott probably 3.5
4.0 4.5?
If you've ever played USTA, know your own actual computer ranking, and seen yourself on video, you'd know these are 5.0 dubs players. Ian is not an impressive technical player in terms of the way his strokes look, but he is clearly a strong dubs player who has strong volleys and lobs and hits spots more often than not. Do you have a video of those players, Nika?
Haha...come on man. Kev and Ian vs Bryant brothers. Someone make that happen
great game
but it's not 5.0
They are either super rusty or they are really 4.0 players, no matter how well they know the principles of the game. And they cannot move at all, super slow their footwork.
Kevin's serve is not that heavy. I play dubs with some 6 ft to 6 5" players and they are chipping balls at their shoulder height
otogigamer your not seeing the serve correctly my man. He hits a heavy serve, that and it combined with the “active” courts of Indian Wells and it was super tough. We’re taking the ball on the rise...hence why it’s not at our shoulders.

I've played at 11 clubs , I keep moving from club to club hopping that I will find a club where the players are aware that doubles is a completely different game to singles eg you talk to one another for starters , you serve further out and there are patterns that you follow
Your not 2 players playing singles together and not communicating through fear of upsetting the other guy
So many arrogant players in our social tennis clubs over here , they all play doubles but all only watch singles
They guard the tram lines as there scared to get passed down the line and so can't reach any easy Poch shots at the centre of the net
I've quit playing at these clubs as I want to play high level doubles tennis but you can't play well if you don't play as a team
I'm 56 years old , started playing 10 years ago , I watched doubles players and strategy
Learnt all the grips and practised free hitting over the parks with my freind then I play matches at the clubs with people that don't even know about grip changes or simple basic positioning , most of them couldn't even see how good my ground stroke and serve techniques were
They were mostly older people that had made up their own strokes and their own strategy since the day that they began to play
Lots of them hit the ball really flat or try some ugly looking slice then you in turn hit them a nice topspin shot which lands right in their hitting zone or bounces high on them
Oh my days it's so frustrating it appears that my success and hard work and thought process have worked against me lol
Fun to see 4 noobs dicussing tactics)))
