As long as there is no real reason to ever download it and use it, it’s actually not a big deal if a camera company’s software doesn’t work great. Photographers are using third-party software like Adobe Lightroom and Capture One a majority of the time and it probably isn’t unusual for them to never feel the need to download first-party software.
That was until companies started locking features behind these programs. For example, Canon Dual Pixel RAW requires the use of Digital Photo Professional and Sony requires photographers fire up Imaging Edge if they want to use Pixel Shift Multi-Shot. Neither of these programs are intuitive to use and, perhaps worse, they are frustratingly slow and prone to crashing.
So, looking at the state of photography in 2024, Chris, Jordan, and I asked ourselves this: how is it acceptable that all these programs are just varying degrees of bad? The three of us dig into it while driving from San Jose to San Francisco in the first-ever PetaPixel Carcast!

As a Sony fanboy, I'm sorry but Sony is a GAME CHANGER in the field of not only having garbage desktop software, but multiple garbage phone apps that only work for certain models. I can only hope that they can return to the old ways of ALSO putting garbage apps right inside the camera itself. I miss the act of buying more camera for my camera by typing my credit card info via T9en.

I'm 49. My first car was obtained in 1997 at the age of 22. It was a 1986 Mazda RX-7, the second generation. Non-turbo, manual. Did not have AC (and I lived and still live in Texas). Did not have power steering, which actually was amazing -- such a direct feeling of actually muscling the car around (kind of bad in parking lots though). It was reddish orange. I loved the rotary engine. It had an aftermarket intake and exhaust, and upgraded suspension along with wheels that pushed the tires outside of the wheel wells a bit. I truly loved that machine, even though it stranded me more than once and would spend days not moving since (as a poor grad student) I couldn't always afford to get it fixed. Usually my father would come through and help in the end though. Sold it to a kid who was even more into RX-7s than I was.

You have tried, I use NX studio every day and I have yet to see better color interpretation from another raw converter. I own, and use dx0, C1 and of course acr. Different purposes, e g noise reduction or more advanced editing. But as a raw converter with applying rudimentary settings NX wipes the floor. Have you tried converting 2000 raw to jpg? The engine is crazy fast, Nikon has done a lot to their software last years. From lagging to blazingly fast. You can't just sit on a bike to test it, Gees. Run the bike for some miles at least. My take on the other raw converters I use: C1: portrait, fast convenient; dx0 superior nr; acr superior in advanced editing.

I can't afford and don't have the space when I travel to carry multiple good quality lenses. Agreed on the software front. The mobile apps are a particular pain point for me, as it's seemingly 50/50 if they work right. I've had success with the OM and Fujifilm apps, but the Lumix and Nikon ones have proved very flaky. At least the new Wi-Fi STA mode on the Z9 solved it for that camera - I can finally download photos without it bugging out 😅

    • @NL0Gwenster
      @NL0Gwenster 2 місяці тому

For me it's literally the reverse. Snapbridge always worked 100% flawlessly and fast, Fujifilm's app was terrible, often didn't want to connect (X100V / always the highest end android phone, Fold 4, then 5 and before that a Sony 1 MK IV) - i tried last week and again was struggling with Fuji; then noticed Fuji made a completely new app. Tried that. And yeah, it's better but still weak. Noticed how you HAVE to not be connected to a wifi point to use it cause otherwise it just messes up. So if you're in a studio and want to use the fuji app; you have to go into your settings and manually disconnect from your studio's AP by changing a setting. And then remember to change it back again after you're done. Snapbridge doesn't have this issue.

In Argentina, at authentic Italian restaurant, I ordered lasagna and was quite surprised to get a plate lasagna noodles in cream sauce - no layers, no meat, no tomato, no visible cheese. I can only conclude their family must have immigrated to Argentina at a time before the tomato (a new world item) became popular in the region. Cuisine in old world Italy was quite regional.

I highly assume that the new Leitz phone is still made by Sharp, so that's why it's Japan-only. Also, the international license for Leica-partnered phones is at Xiaomi. Since they don't sell their devices in North America, I think Leica should try to sell Leitz phones in NA, but well licensing and additional development costs money, so do distribution networks, and so on. And I see how the really have the best chances to sell it in Japan where there are so many camera nerds.

One feature I use on my Nikon cameras is their Picture Controls. These work great if you are creating JPEGS, but if you shoot RAW, then the picture control info is passed in the RAW file, but ONLY Nikon NX Studio reads these and interprets them. So you need to read into Nikon NX Studio, then export as a tiff, then suck into your editing SW. I wish there was a batch utility to do this, or even better, have Adobe interpret these.

The only cheese to go in there is Pecorino (good Parmigiano might do if no well aged dry and hard Pecorino is available). I admit that I deviate from this iron rule myself, as I found putting a little Gorgonzola into the Béchamel sauce elevates to a heavenly experience, but certainly not Ricotta, which has its fair uses, but not in Lasagne. Cheers, Urs

Chris used a more American recipe that calls for ricotta while Jaron used a traditional recipe that uses a bechemel and a good parm.

Canons DPP software is so laughably bad and pathetic that it just deserves to be ridiculed in the media and using an example of how freaking backwards they are as a software company.
It looks like it was designed literally 30 years ago, it's stupid the UI is stupid the functions are dumb everything is dumb about this application and a separate floating windows is insane and imbecilic I can't find enough words to describe how terrible this piece of software is. It doesn't even deserve to get called software it's a freaking application and it's a trashy stupid ridiculous garbage application at that.
In the last few months I had to check focus on files from the r62 because the stupid thing was acting up, and this dumb application called DPP was no help because it is so stupid and trashy. All these years they seriously couldn't figure out that the software is garbage and needs a serious serious overhaul if not just for the UI functions and make it run actually well on fast modern hardware? Like how bad do you have to be as a software developer or your team is a bunch of interns who quit because they didn't think your level of quality was good enough for the future so they bounced and nobody wants to work on this garbage.
    PS- DPP IS FREAKING GARBAGE

Guys! Quick question: I'm going on vacation in 3 weeks. I have a Nikon Z50 and an FTZ adapter, should I get a Nikon Z DX 18-140mm, Nikon Z DX 12-28mm, or Nikon Af-S 18-300mm? Or should I save my money and use "the best camera I always have with me" i.e. S22 Ultra?

Welcome to the San Francisco Bay Area. In your journey, try going to the spectacular Sonoma coast. You are at the very end of crab season, but no trip should miss the great crab. Also, enjoy a bottle of Russian River Pinot. Great combination.

As an italian, i would have chosen Chris lasagna (even though 3 layers are definitely not enough. you do 5 to 7, with less sauce between the layers). Sorry, jaron, but i am afraid you do not remember the ratio of pasta to cheese to sauce right.

The only thing I'd knock the OEM cam software editors for is being forced to use it for things like Nikon's pixel shift merging...but I can understand why in that case why you'd need to (because Adobe may take a while to include it in Lightroom or may never decide to add it to Lightroom. For general editing, I don't see why anyone buying a $2,000+ camera and not learn how or what to use Lightroom, Capture One, etc. If you're buying a camera at that level, I think it's not wise to use the OEM software. For cheap bodies under $1,000, it's more understandable that those people might want to use OEM software/not want to buy/learn Lightroom, etc. Heck, I was in the store picking up my Zf today and overheard the employee telling the other employee the person on the phone is asking about if they need this or that photo for shooting sunrise/sunsets. Those are the type of people I think would probably be using OEM software (and have no awareness of things like Lightroom or no interest in it if they did hear about it). Anyone serious about editing that shoots often and has lots of images to go through would not be using OEM software (unless it's someone that likes being tortured 🙂).

I have to say Nikon's NX Studio is useful, but very very clunky. Makes Lightroom Classic look like the future....Although it does give you the ability to apply settings you could have applied in-camera, after the fact (since some settings may be stored in the RAW file anyway and can be adjusted as needed, and the software can re-render the image with such settings applied, like their D-Lighting technology which is basically shadow boost).

I'm currently living in Japan and I looked the leitz phone 3 up. The official announcement from Softbank (a service provider in Japan) said that the phone is ONLY gonna be sold by them (and apparently you have to use their mobile service in order to purchase it). I suspect that's the reason why this phone is Japan only. But the machine itself is still being manufactured by Sharp. The price is 195,696Yen or 1300 USD, which is slightly higher than my 256G iphone 15 pro max (189,800Yen). Not too bad for a Leica I guess

Being Softbank-only within Japan doesn’t really explain the lack of international sales. Even the iPhone was originally Softbank-only within Japan, but that was completely unrelated to international sales.

On batteries: for longevity of lithium batteries try and keep it between ~50%-70% charged with the occasional full drain to reset the charge controller memory of how much charge is held by the battery (best way to do the latter is to keep using it until the device shuts off, typically a hard shut-off).

I want to make a video rant about the state of video recording software on phones. There's no perfect one-every one has a flaw that's fixed by another, but some have features others don't have and none line up perfectly.
