Christ alone saves and if you don't have Christ, you don't have Christianity. No one turned Christ into what the bible teaches He is. Peter certainly got it wrong when he sort to (like the devil) prevent Christ from doing the will of His Father and fulfilling all that was foretold of Him. Peter, like the many of the Jews, were waiting for a visible Kingdom not knowing that the Kingdom of God begins in the heart and that the Messiah to come was fist going to be a suffering servant before He reigned as King (Isaiah53). This behavior by Peter was anticipating his denial of Christ later on and was a consequence of unbelief and Satan's desire to have Peter, and if Jesus had listened, we won't be speaking of a Christianity today.
