Like a Rolling Stone - A Closer Look at Jimi's Licks

  • I'm moving so slow from my surgery that I just wanted to get this series started. I will do a more in-depth look in the next part or parts. I've got this and the Country Blues series going now so I have a lot of work to do. Jimi's delicate attack is what makes this song so sweet. He goes from barely touching the strings to get a clean sound to really digging in hard to energize the Fuzz Face and his cranked amps. I'm using the Analog Man Voodoo Fuzz (Germanium) on this with the fuzz maxed out almost (4:00), and the volume around 3:00. My guitar volume is between 6-7 but I think I liked it closer to 7. I'm using an original 1959 Bassman amp. Jimi's fills between chords are what always interested me in this song. I show you a few here. There are three verses in the Monterey Festival version. He plays a different variation of his licks in each verse. His variety of chords and licks are what make him so great. I'm like you and cannot get enough. Enjoy.

      Google it and you will find a great video of him playing this version at the Monterey Pop Festival. I also saw several things in the video that I had speculated on by listening to the track. For example, he does change from the bridge pickup to the neck pickup right before he starts singing the first verse. I was glad to see that I heard that correctly. Also, I saw how he played one lick that I had incorrectly transcribed and that also helps in ear training. I did not like the way it sounded when I played it. Although I played the correct notes, just not on the correct strings. And, he is very good with his guitar volume control. You can hear the fuzz very well going into the third verse and then he turns down his guitar very quickly to clean up the fuzz. That is very difficult to do while singing and playing. You will love his facial expressions. It is like the guitar is part of his soul and he looks at the guitar like the true master of the instrument he was.

    Oh man! I crazy love this! 64 years old, and still wanting to do this! I had a 70's Strat, just like that. One time, after stringing it up, after a few years of not playing, realized that the springs did, indeed, lend a certain sound to it. I've got about 5 squires, but haven't touched them in years. It is about time to pick them up. Absolutely love this work, Thanks a million!

      @millstap  6 років тому

      Wow, we are the same age. It is a never ending quest. Also, I think playing and learning new things on the guitar keeps your mind sharp so pick them up for sure. I have been trying to do my next video for a few weeks now on Hendrix's Bold As Love, but I have my 2 and 4 year old grandsons here for a couple of months and they are a handful. For example, I went to play my amp the other day and nothing was coming out and I started troubleshooting to see why. I was stumped for a few minutes until I looked down at the knobs on my Fulltone OCD and they had all been changed and the volume was at 0. I have to keep them out of this room but sometimes they break in. Hopefully I get that video done in the next week or so.

    glad your recovering millstap! your tone is always spot on! I keep buying new amps..I need to invest in a older Fender. I don't think there are to many new mass produced non boutique amps that have that tone like the late 50's/60's Fenders.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  8 років тому

      I think you are correct. I did see a great review from Joe Bonamassa on the 1968 Reissue Fender Silverface Deluxe Reverb. It won't sound like a Bassman though. Joe also said something interesting that he does not like the boutique amps because they tend to blow up. Nothing from the '60's sounds like a Tweed Bassman. The Bassman is very basic and may not appeal to a lot of people. You almost always would want to add a reverb unit of some kind. The simpler circuit is what makes it sound the way it does.

    I love your videos. I'm probably your age and was blown away by Jimi when I was just learning guitar at 19 or 20. I had been sitting around with a Mel Bay book of blues tablature and thought I had to hit every note perfectly and always do things the same way then I watched Jimi Plays Monterey and it changed everything. Playing guitar became fun and experimental. You are constantly talking about things others don't cover as well about Jimi and sometimes SRV. Thanks for your lessons brother!

    • @millstap
      @millstap  6 років тому +1

      I grew up with Jimi too. I remember when my grandparents heard it, they thought it was devil music or something. I never dreamed that I would ever be able to play his music so I never bothered to learn any of it until just recently. I was determined to learn Little Wing and that is what started it for me. We didn't have UA-cam back in the day so there was no way to learn anything except for what you could pick off of the albums. And he only had three albums and they were so "studioized" there was no way to duplicate the sound. All of his bootleg and live stuff really opened the door to understanding his playing style.

    • @grandprairie2712
      @grandprairie2712 6 років тому

      I love his live work. He got bored with his most popular stuff and didn't perform them at his best later on. Man, at Monterrey though he was excited and loving every minute of every song. When he was really into a performance he was beyond amazing. Never played a verse or chorus the same way in one performance of a song, let alone the next time he played it. His innovation and creativity on the spot were unparalleled by any other guitarist ever in my opinion. You've got the essence of his style and tone down pat. 9 out of 10 guys on UA-cam who make videos about how to sound like Jimi aren't even close. By the way, you ever checked out Randy Hansen? He doesn't just imitate solos. Instead he plays his own phrases and yet they sound exactly like phrases Jimi would have played. He could play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and play it the way you'd expect Jimi to play it. His voice sounds like Jimi too.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  6 років тому

      With the money I think Randy is making, he should at least be able to afford braces, LOL. I like Randy but I never watch the stuff because I would much rather watch Jimi. As much as I love it, it would always be best to break away and do your own thing. I would hate being expected to act like someone else my whole life. I can't get away from Jimi's style because that is how I like to play and grew up learning to play. I guess that was a huge influence on me although after the Monkees, my next big influence was Grand Funk Railroad. Jimi came later for me. It's funny to think that Jimi toured with the Monkees. That was a nightmare for him.

    • @grandprairie2712
      @grandprairie2712 6 років тому

      Yeah, Randy could have gone another direction and done his own thing. He definitely has the talent and abilities. I love all kinds of music. (The most active band I ever played in was a Bluegreass gospel group.) But of all the performers around today there are few I'd go fight a crowd for to see live. Randy is one of those few. I definitely do get what you're saying though.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  6 років тому

      Yes, he never ventures down south. I see his current tour is just in WA. Speaking of other music, I've been enjoying my Dad's old vinyl collection lately which is a lot of great orchestras from the 50's but mostly '60's. They don't have big bands like that anymore. The talent was amazing back then. And the sound quality of the albums is much better than the more modern albums I bought as a young guy. If you were to buy a turntable nowadays and play an album from the '80's and compare it to one of the '60's albums, you would thing the old album is HD.

    i started double checking the monerey releases i found out the video releases were digitally remastered by alan douglas.all the monerey lp releases the uk the usa the germany lp releases were the same digital master.they were released in 86.the only analogue release was jimi on one side & otis reading on the other side.ive got that & i sold the other release even though i wanted the full gig.many say its his best gig but there are so many great gigs maybe it was his tightest gig.band of gypsies was one of my fav concerts he played so raw it was so emotional & poweful.in england douglas got mitch to play over buddy miles drums & released it in the uk buddy found out & took them to court & it was re-released again with buddy,s drums reinstated wally heider recorded the gig but kramer decided to remix it stopping the feedback reverberate & removing some fine licks.wally heider was a much better sound engineer compared to kramer.kramer claims he recorded the woodstock gig but all he did was edit it & remix it he was there in the crowd on stand by but he wasnt the engineer that set up the mics & sound board i belive it was wally heider.you might have noticed i dont like eddie kramer my number one reason is he had to change everything he wouldnt let jimis true intentions be heard.the singles lp smash hits kramer did a stereo mix & overdubbed lead vocal backing vocals drums rolls metal percussion some of noels bass licks & jimi,s guitar got the same treatment.it was an insult jimi never forgot & he learned how to sound engineer himself.on electric ladyland.that version was released in 68 on polydor records.eddie krammers mix was released first by a few months on track records.ive got them both.but as far as i can tell jimi,s mix was never released again & eddies mix was the labels choice.the digital reissues of his three studio lps were remixed & butchered by eddie kramer they are terrible it makes me sad hearing it .axis & the first lp had big changes made by kramer also jimi intended to use more echo & guitar phrasing on axis & make it more psychedelic but kramer removed most of it great post thumbs up from me..

      kramer talks about jimi like his his best mate but really its all about eddie getting credit.he really did work against jimi,s intentions from day one.i dont like any sound engineers that simplify music because they think its to experimental.but thats the price you pay when you sign the dotted line for a major label.my old records sound great the bass is thumping seriously ive got 8inch bass tubes a quality old separate amp a marantz which is noted for top notch separation an a1400 i think. i use an ortofon stylus & cartridge with a german duel record deck thats got audiophile written on it lol.im debating getting tube tech speakers.which are basically very similar to guitar amp tubes.hendrix lived in camden in london i used to go record hunting there on a saturday when the market was on i did that for about 10 years.sometimes i would go to ladbroke grove,soho & east putney as well there was a record fare once a month at the electric ballroom in camden that was where i saw my first live gig.they put up a blue plaque in the 90s jimi,s ex girlfriend linda asked & the council said yes.the guitarist from the who pete townshend said a few kind words & the plaque was unveiled.jimi lived next door to where handel the composer lived who also got a blue plaque i think charles dickens got a blue plaque as well so its a first that a moderb day musician got one.apparently jimi,s apartment has been restored to how it was when jimi lived there from old photographs & is now a small museum..

    • @millstap
      @millstap  7 років тому +1

      Sorry I took so long to respond. Yes, the string length does make a difference. It is why Jimi's bass notes sounded so big. The extra length makes a big difference. And the plain strings are quicker to bend to pitch because they are shorter. That is why you see a lot of reverse headstocks on pro guitars.

      wow, thank you for this, I think this is very important..I love the fat sound of the low E. Really adds a lot to the Hendrix tone. What pickups ? I've got a '90s strat through a '80s Twin reverb , got the ICD, and the roger mayer octavizer..how would you use these for the rolling stone tone, and the axis bold as love tones ? Many thanks in advance, you are the only one on YT who gets Hendrix.

  • @voxpathfinder15r

    How do you like the reverse head stock? I haven't tried one, but my theory is that a set of strings Jimi played 10-38 should feel the same tension on the reverse head stock as a set of 9-42's would feel on a normal head stock - any thoughts?

    • @millstap
      @millstap  6 років тому

      I absolutely love the reverse headstock. I can hardly play a standard headstock anymore. I've been looking at getting reverse headstock necks for all of my Strats but they are pretty expensive at around $260. They just play and sound better, especially if you bend strings a lot like I do. I didn't have much luck with the 10-38. They just did not stay in tune very well. I am perfectly happy with a 10-46 set with a .015" G. Especially when tuned down a whole step to D which Jimi did a lot. I can't imagine having a 10-38 set tuned to D. They would be like rubber bands.

    Millstap, do you think the tube screamer circuit was designed to replicate this sound? In my lifetime search for Jimi’s tone I’ve found that I can get pretty darn close to this sound you get off your 59 bassman. To the point my go to jimi tone is a tube screamer into a clean Marshall or it sounds just as good going the SRV route into my original 1969 silverface deluxe reverb amp. What’s your thoughts on that? All the tone snobs tell me I’m going about it wrong yet it sounds dead on to me

      Hey Sam, thanks for subscribing. The Princeton Reverb is a great amp although I have never played one. I know there are quite a few pros that use them on stage. Gary Clark Jr. uses the Vibro-King but he also always has a mic'd Princeton Reverb in there somewhere sometimes hidden. You can see it here in my rig rundown video at 4:45. ua-cam.com/video/_lb_sj7_RUI/v-deo.html
      It would be great for your home. I always like AlNiCo speakers but keep in mind they can make a big difference so you may want to experiment with others if you have the time and money. Of course, I would always search for an original mid '60's blackface Princeton Reverb but I see now that they are getting close to $3K. Crazy. They are popular. The good thing about an original vintage amp is that is it will at least retain its value or rise in value over time. Good luck. Let me know if you have any other questions.

      I made my own but I used a cheaper cable and it finally broke about in the middle of the cable from running over it with my chair. So now, I am using White Noise's coily cable which is pretty bulky. I should make another one. The smallest profile plug you will find is a one of those old style, flat head (pancake style) right angle plugs.www.amazon.com/Switchcraft-2-Conductor-Right-Angle-Flat-Back/dp/B0049BOCYG. The reason I used the cheap cable was because it was thinner. Use a flexible, thin, high quality cable and you should be good to go. Most of the high end cables are too bulky.

Living in such a small community, the demand for good live music is very slim. If I get away from the more rock syled blues and lean more towards jump and swing style, probably more opportunities for me. For now trying to be happy just playing the Bassman at home. • @millstap
      @millstap  8 років тому +1

      Yes, that is just Jimi having fun at the end. You just need a lot of gain so you will need a cranked amp and fuzz. That allows him to use the whammy bar while doing the hammer-ons. At the very end, I thought he was "bouncing" off of his whammy bar but he is actually just hitting the body of his guitar just above the strings to make the strings ring. Maybe I will try to do a little demo video. I'm getting a little behind right now.

    I always hated this song until I heard Hendrix's version, then I knew I had to learn it. Hey has Janie Hendrix figured out a way to make you pay royalties yet? Lol.

      No, but Janie can be a real pain. And not just her. The other day I played a snippet of a live version of Hear My Train a Coming from Winterland on my live feed and they cut it off. That was Sony I think.

      @@millstap You must notify sony and janie, in writing, when you want to fart.
      The answer is always no though. 😵

    i love how die hard jimi fans buy lefthanded guitars and play them righthanded. Looks uncomfortable tho

      It's a complete coincidence (maybe not) that Jimi couldn't find a left handed guitar to play. You would be surprised how much different they sound and contributed a lot to his sound. The long bass strings on the reverse headstock make most of the difference. If I every buy another Strat (which I doubt), it will always have the reverse, big headstock. You will notice a lot of pros with the reverse headstock. There is a good reason.

    He has a much lighter touch than you do.
    You're attacking it a little bit too rough.
    Jimmy had a soft touch.That's what made him so great.
    Good job though
    Can't really say Jimmy.Would attack like you do.

      Exactly. It's amazing how light and lightning fast Jimi's touch was. Brute force is just my style. I can't stop myself after all these years.

    I CAN'T GET OVER how many of you "Lesson Video" guys film the guitar from A FUCKING ANGLE! .... If you ACTUALLY want to share what you've learned a STRAIGHT ON VIEW of the guitar would help .... DONCHA THINK?

    jimi也真傻!活的歲數也不過我的一半!選那麼複雜的彈奏方法累死自己!也沒我彈得久!
