Mannish Boy (Both Sides of the Sky) - Tone Check and How to Play

  • My goal lately has been to keep my guitar as clean as possible but I still yield to temptation and kick in those overdrives. The Alienist Voicing Boost really does the trick. Combining a good Germanium Fuzz, Clean Boost and Overdrive can be a great combination. It gives you such a variety in tones from very clean and sparkly to super fuzz just by using your guitar volume and tone controls. Clean will be around 3 with a sweet spot between 5-8. The guitar volume works differently depending on which combination of effects you are using. I can have all three on and still get a really nice clean tone around 3-4.
    This is Mannish Boy from Both Sides of the Sky. The Jimi'isms in this song are mainly that Jimi mixes it up and never plays the same passage the same twice. It gives his songs a sound that is never boring or predictable. It is a good skill to hone. Experiment and always be creative.
    Here is a link to a great vibe I discovered from Kenny Wayne Shepherd's amp tech at Tinsley Audio. It is called the Sir Henry Vibe. For $599 it sounds great and you can attach a speed pedal too. I'm thinking of getting one myself. I am using my Classic Amplification Vibe Baby in this video. Brad doesn't make them anymore. www.tinsleyaudio.com/
    Also, these new Eminence Legend Custom Shop 1028P's are sounding fantastic in the 1959 Bassman. The are a great speaker if you are looking for the perfect Jensen P10R sound. The are custom because they have a Kraft paper voice coil former just like the original Jensens. You have to special order them.
    Here are the links to the pedals I was using:

    Fulltone OCD, V1.4; www.fulltone.com/products/ocd-v2, I see they don't make this version anymore. V2 looks interesting.

    This track blew me away when I heard it. I had thought all the really great Jimi gems had filtered into the light by now. Such a great version. Thanks for breaking this down. I find the right hand deceptively tricky on this, similar to his version of Killing Floor -- you have to really find the groove. Reaching that pinky up occasionally to grab the E has taken some work without losing the rhythm. Digging your channel lately. Someone pointed me here when I mentioned an interest in old Bassmans. Its must be screaming loud there (I saw the vid of your wife telling you to turn it down. :D )

    • @millstap
      @millstap  5 років тому

      Hey Matt, it is pretty darn loud. I personally restrict my playing to 4-7PM just so I don't drive my wonderful neighbors completely bonkers. I think I saw your other nice comment. I will go there and respond to it. Yes, right hand. Even when I think that little two note section that goes to three notes is simple, I listen to his rhythm and realize that he is playing a certain rhythm that sounds the best with the vibe. It's like little triplets inside the eighth note beat of the vibe. He knew how to make everything sound right.

    Unbelievable, this is probably about as good as anyone could transcribe it. Really with Jimi you got to go off of feel. You're really not supposed to for rhythm sake my teacher years ago was always stressing that. But Jimi always kept similar rhythms and keys so it's not hard too hard to get that in check. The embellishments and placements are gonna kill me going after this. I do like $20 Fine, Stepping Stone, and Woodstock as well in the track. People say this was a trash quality for him. But I prefer the tone and sheer barebones stuff he had going at that point in time.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  2 роки тому

      Sorry I took so long. I am not familiar with the Boss. The TS9 should help. Then a good fuzz. A lot of time I will use a Germanium fuzz in conjunction with a boost like the TS9. I use an OCD. Since they both clean up by lowering the volume on your guitar, you can have both the TS( and fuzz on at the same time and turn your guitar down to 3 or 4 and get a really nice clean but crunchy rhythm tone then turn up the volume to get increasing degrees of fuzz. I would run the TS9 as clean as possible, low gain, high volume. It is safe to run the OCD on 18V to get it even cleaner. I don't think you can do that with the TS9 so don't risk it unless they say it is okay.

    Obviously the reverse headstock and reverse bridge pickup along with the reverse pickup magnet staggers all have an effect on the tone.
    But in a recent interview, Eddie Kramer was saying that one reason why a reverse strat sounds different is because the chambered part of the body is now on the thicker strings and that makes it resonate differently.
    What do you think?

    • @millstap
      @millstap  4 роки тому

      For me, I think the body has the least amount of effect but I may be wrong. They all have some effect but I just don't notice much from the reverse body. I did put a reverse neck on my right handed body but since all bodies sound different, it's hard to tell what is making the difference. I still think the headstock makes the biggest difference.

    • @mikedreucci4236

      @@millstap I’ve always wondered about that. The pickups are pretty much mounted to a plastic pickguard, how much does the wood actually play in the tone? I could see maybe if the pickguard was metal or pickups were screwed directly into the wood. Then the wood might play into how the pickups might sense the vibration of the wood.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  Рік тому

      @@mikedreucci4236 The wood definitely can make a difference. That is why the vintage guitar guys are always bragging about finding a light weight Strat because, to them, they sound better. I can vouch for that they sound different, more woody. It is something with the light Alder that makes the strings sound different. You can feel the whole guitar resonate more even when unplugged. Neither is better but I do really like my light Strat. It has its own character which is hard to find nowadays because all of the new wood is very dense and heavy.

    Millsap...how you mentioned turning down the tones on the guitar....Clapton referred it to the "woman tone" for ex...if you are on the neck...the top tone knob should be turned up 9-10, while you turn down the lower tone knob to like a 4-6.....and vice versa whenyour on the bridge pickup....really cool sound. jimi used that setting

      @millstap  5 років тому

      @@RutherfordBcrazy All four of my Strat are tuned down to Eb. Jimi and Stevie Ray played in that tuning almost 100% of the time. I like less tension on the strings to help my old hand bend the strings easier. Plus, every time I try to learn a Hendrix song, it is usually in Eb or even sometimes D like Voodoo Chile.
