I only have polaroid go, but my impression from their manual saying "polaroid film loves light!" seems like Polaroid was keep getting complains of "my photo came out too dark" and this looks like their reaction to it. Which is pretty unfortunate because maybe what polaroid needed was little bit more forgiving film, not over exposing camera.

I'd be curious to learn how soon after shooting the photos were scanned. Polaroids take 30 days to dry, and in that time I've found highlights darken by a quarter-stop or more. I have a hunch that in a few weeks, the "slightly overexposed" shots will be looking very nice. I've taken to calling this process the "blooming," and I've had some seemingly just-over-exposed shots end up looking very nice after a month.

    • @SweetLouPhotography
      @SweetLouPhotography  2 роки тому +18

I scanned all the photos over the last week (before I uploaded this vid) But I shot the first set of photos back in mid September, so they've had a bit of time to 'bloom.' I shot the second set closer to this vid, so they have not had that same time-- interesting observation though, I'll keep an eye out

  • @shelbyjmurray

@polaroid Lately I’ve been wasting 2-5 pictures per film pack attempting to take a photo in the light painting setting. I push the button in the app and it will start the timer and around 1 second (usually before) it spits out the photo. Some times this can be avoided or corrected by scrolling to the next setting (manual) and adjusting any of the settings for manual and then going right back to light painting. Once back, set up the shot, cross fingers, press button, and…. Spits out another photo. Turn off camera, app, and even my phone. I liken all this to all the funny things I would do as a kid in order
To make my original Nintendo game cartridge work but with less success when it comes to my Polaroid. It’s not just with the light painting setting either. I put a 5 second on in manual mode and as soon as I push the red button in the app it takes a normal photo, no extended shutter. I am not joking when i say that I have got somewhere around 80-100 photos that are trash from ejecting prematurely. Very upsetting, and yet here I am saying something for the first time on a random video I am guessing a hear after i first noticed the issue.

for a beginner, would you recommend getting the polaroid now+ or the instax sq20? it is the first instant camera im buying and probably won't buy another one for years (if ever) so i'm trying to take the most educated decision (:

    • @SweetLouPhotography

I'm not familiar with the SQ20, but that said overall Instax film is cheaper and more reliable. I actually have a vid that compares the different formats of instant film that are available right now which might be helpful to you. In my opinion the film is more important than the camera since long term thats what you're really gonna be spending your money on

Just found your channel and hit the subscribe - got a now+ for my birthday, thought it would be fun to shoot with as a bit of a lighthearted change from my pro camera. That said its been so annoying. Got excited and went straight for a pack of film 600 for that nice retro look and 6/8 images came out super overexposed - my dog looked like he was in heaven. I have stuck in a pack of i-type and will have another go with it. Its currently -11 degrees celcius in Scotland just now so will take some indoors ones over Christmas and then do some outside stuff once its a bit warmer - no app, no adjustments just point and click. If its super bright outside I'll probably underexpose slightly and see what happens. I am not expecting great images, but somewhere near correct exposure would do

I just need help understanding when to under expose or over expose. I know the camera has three lines. The bottom. The middle. And the top. Now for my understanding, when it’s too dark, you go to the top line. When it’s too bright, you go to the bottom line. Or do I have this mixed up. I would just like to take a good quality photo without it being too dark every time.

@@jordanlayfield yeah so I was able to get a hold of someone from Polaroid and she was able to explain it to me.
So if your inside someplace where the light is dim or there’s a lot of dark areas, adjust the exposure value to brighter. (+1/2 EV). Which in simpler terms, when you do the exposure setting and see the line blinking. You’re going to want to adjust it to the top line.
And vice versa. If it’s too bright, then adjust the exposure value to the bottom line. (-1/2 EV) for a darker setting. I wish I had photos or a video to show you but that’s my best explanation.

You mention that you've not used the flash outdoors, as though it matters, but with your outdoor subject being so far from the camera, the light from the flash wouldn't reach the subject anyway, so wouldn't make any difference to the photograph.

  • @andreasschroder7880

Haven't shot polaroid since the One Step 2 (or whatever it's name was) and yes, I switched to Instax because of price and image quality - so take my opinion with a grain of salt. But just looking at your photos I'd say the two cameras have different priorities when it comes to metering. To me it seems like the Now prioritizes the highlights which leads to very underexposed shadows which again screws up a lot of pictures with a lot of sky in them. The Now+ just seems to meter in a more even/averaged way - which in return makes highlights like your face in the outdoor shot seem overexposed. One might also argue that it's not the fault of the camera since they have to meter the one or the other way, but that the problem is in fact the bad dynamic range of polaroid film (compared to Instax :D)...

I just got the now plus about a month ago as I really like the idea of quick and easy instant photos. Is instax more beginner friendly? I feel like I have to learn in order to successfully use the Polaroid and I’m not opposed to that but I definitely want someone that I can take out of the box and snap quality instant pictures. If you think the difference between brands is that significant then I’ll likely buy an instax as well. Any advice is much appreciated.

I hate my Polaroid Now, but i want to love it. I have never ever had so many exposure issues. NONE of any indoor shots turned out correctly exposed. Even if the subject was just 3 feet away, all i get is nearly pure black image. "Overexposing" doesn't help at all. The Now only shined so far on very bright day light with closeups, these are fine.
Polaroid stated, that the lightmeter has been improved on the Now+. To be honest, it doesn't feel like a day and night difference. It is noticeable, but barely.
I am already considering to sell my Onestep 2 and Now to get a Onestep 2 Plus, since manual focus and a strong flash is what i need. Then again, the flash, according to your indoor shots, isn't the issue. It seems like my unit simply doesn't meter correctly the shutter speeds?
Polaroid should really sponsor you finally. Do zink cameras even count, anyway?

Polaroid films made these days are miles away from the 600 film quality in the 90s. And yes, the new cameras are just pitiful about exposure. I would have said go with a used Polaroid camera from the 90s but you will still have to use 'new' films which are fuzzy garbage. The other instant cameras on the market also don't have good enough picture quality plus most pictures are just too small. See it this way : the original Polaroid in the 80s and 90s had already pictures at the limit of the acceptable : size was small, image was average but sharp enough to become a little souvenir. At the opposite, the cameras these days have even smaller images and poorer photo quality, so it's just not going to be a souvenir thing
