This camera is amazing. I bought a used one for $90 from B&H to see how good it is. I like it better than my GoPro Hero+. The size is so small and perfect for running sports. Plus, the steady shot is a fit for basketball. With the GoPro Hero+ all I see are lots of movements. I would recommend this action camera over the GoPro any day...
Loved your videos... Learned a lot from them just now... Just a quick question... Any word on that flat lens for underwater with the HDR-AZ1?? I just picked up the camera yesterday and was excited to shoot some water stuff but after seeing video of it with the case, I realize it wouldn't be worth it unless I had a lens like the AS100 has...
@Engr. Md. Mahfuz Can't respond because of your privacy settings. A new successor to the AS100 came out this week driving the price on Amazon down to $149. It's a flash sale but if you're around today I would suggest the AS100V over the AZ1, though I find both cameras acceptable.
just wanted to share. i got the az1vr/wbdl at costco for 299. it came with the wrist control, a couple mou7nts, the water case and selfie stick. at same time i got an acer iconia tab 8 with kitkat 4.4. app works good with the camera for commanding it and taking video off of the camera to the tablet
I happened to read a review saying that you must set the GMT + or - depnding in what country you live in and your local time, then sync together.I did mine and it worked where it shows connected to satellite but im waiting for the sim card you recommend here in you description I will update when I'll put sim and try my sony!
Mark Im in Germany do not know if that matters with the gps,I put the 64g sim´card Extreme micro UHS I, yesterday tested it and GPS connected with no issues, came home downloaded it to my Imac and it worked like a charm! good luck! ps:I changed my settings on youtube hope that works!
Mark I need your help! I bough a (64gb Sandisk EXTREME SDHC I CARD) and the first video i record works fine but as soon as i stop it and restart a new video will no record anymore i get a code number !07-02 and a crash line as indicating file crashed! I search on Sonys website and suggest to make sure you got the right card,do you have a SDXC card? I see here you suggested to get the SDHC CARD! so Im confused as to these to should work according to your description here?just answer here if you can not reply I will check the comment section later thank you so much!
Cessna readyfortakeoff If you look at the drop down menu below the video I suggest a few SDXC cards. The HC should work but not in Pro mode from my tests. Not that I think you're doing it but the card can be inserted flipped the wrong way. Since the camera accepts sony's proprietary card as well, it will accept the card with it inserted incorrectly. Make sure that isn't happening first. I use the SanDisk Pixtor SDXC cards myself.
Thank you!I got it working I was trying to pair with wi-fi and then I did not press enter on the live view I do this 2 times while trying to pair and now it works ok the sim card work but not for xvacs. thanks for your help!
@Cassena Can't respond directly to your comment because of your privacy settings. As of this time I don't think the GPS is fixed. We tried it 2 weeks ago with no luck.
13:37, the battery does not come fully charged, it comes half charged (as is the case with most all lithium battery technologies) and you must top it up and keep the battery over 50% for optimal longevity. I really hope you'd add an annotation as this is misinformation. I just plugged my brand new one into the computer and the light is yellow indicating it's charging, not charged.
Hey Mark, curious, does this AZ1 record in the same high bit rate 50Mbps like the AS100V? And at 24p? Also, can you do a comparison between the AS100V and the Hero4 Black and/or the AZ1 and the Hero4 Black? I'm mainly curious about the sharpness at 1080p 50Mbps in the 120 degree field of view at 24p with the anti-shake ON vs. the Hero4 in same settings sans anti shake obviously. I'm a vlogger and mainly use the original Sony Action Cam As10. I've been looking for an upgrade but need better video detail in the close up/arms length. Also, I'm very curious about the audio quality vs the gopro with speech at arms length... That was the reason I went Sony in the first place. The audio is just so good. Thanks for all your vids!
I'll be filming a lot of this stuff this weekend. Had intended to do it sooner but had a slight issue. Anyway I should be covering most of this. Gotta looking into the frame rate stuff but it's my understanding you can't change the field of view. It reduced to 120 when stabilzation is turned on and only then. The AS10, 15, and 30 had this but was removed from the AS100. Didn't see it in my initial tests either. Anyway I'll look for in into this weekend.
it does do high bit rate at 50mbps like the AS100V, and audio wise, Sony has stereo and Gopro has mono. You're going to get better audio from your surroundings as opposed to the Gopro. if that helps.
Works with the bigger version. Only way to adjust field of view is with Steady shot which is basically a no. You can't switch to it without entering this mode.
so i'm planning to use my gopro on a chesty with a Chinese camera gimbal so it will be relatively stable. would you recommend this a a b cam? (id prob mount it on my bike somewhere or helmet. anywhere really)
Excellent video, and I'm excited about this new camera. You mentioned specific microSD cards that should be used with this camera, but I didn't see where you gave specifics... What microSD card(s) would you recommend for this camera in 32 and 64gb flavors?
I listed it in information section below. I use the SanDisk Extreme Plus 64GB MicroSDXC UHS-I. The UHS-1 and XC parts are important. Amazon keeps sending me the UHS-3 which has way lower right speeds. The SanDisk Pixtor series has Pro mode capable write speeds even though the card reads UHS-3 .
Thank you so much for the information! I didn't see it in the description when I watched the video over chromecast, then didn't even look for it when I came to comment. :-/
+MarkHawkCam do you think this would be good for a dirt bike? i want to attach it to my helmet but i don't think i could? Thank you for your videos i love them :-)!
+Steel Hammer There is a special skeleton mount you'd need which would leave the camera outside of the case. But there are a lot of people using the adhesives or creating other ways to attach it in the case. You might get a bad glare in the case from headlights at night.
It doesn't even work with the Remote at the moment. But no, in the ideal case it would work from the remote but it will not work when using a mobile device.
Hi Mark, specs says no gps on camera (only on opt remote) do you know why and how the cam generates gps logs? When the cam is connected to pc I see a gps folder in the sd card and the cam created text file log of my video. Sadly, Sony CSR has no idea about it. Thx. Nice vids btw.
+93bandit400 When the two are connected that text log should generate accurate data. It didn't work at launch and required firmware updates on the camera and possible the remote. You have to be using the remote that shipped with the AZ1. Not all remotes have built in GPS, just the ones bundled with the AZ1. So I'd update the firmware, sync them together, and see if it's giving you actual gps coordinates.
..i bought a used live view remote first without knowing what it really was..now im going to buy this camera for it on ebay hopefully..why does this camera need a micro sd card though??
very good video .. I like to see how this camera takes pictures of people or animals , not just landscapes also show how the smartphone application that works .. Sony cameras debuting at half price the Gopro
We put up a video of it against GoPro and the HDR series. Do wish I'd taken photos of my dog as it would of been a good comparison for hair detail. Anyway a lot of them are up now.
Do you guy know how to do a time lapse on this camera?using iMovie? i can not find anything on here or google so far downloads for xvacs when using final cut pro.help!
It doesn't take photos for a time-lapse. I believe all you can do is it's video feature where it takes photos in video compression then stitches them back together. I'll look into it tonight with mine.
+Robert R VR includes a special LCD remote. The one packaged with the AZ1 is special because it also contains the GPS feature. The other after marker ones don't have the GPS built into the remote. So if that's important to you, you'll need the VR model. Otherwise you can get the standard AZ1 model then buy a LCD remote later if you want.
HEY! I am planning to buy an action cam but right now i can not afford a gopro hero4 black, but i want great quality! I thought the az1 is the perfect choice BUT it has no flat lens for diving and its battery life is only an hour. So i checked out tha as30 which is cheaper but has the same specs but it does not have a standard tripod mount without its case...i would make sacrifice for the better quality but its hard to tell from videos...Please help!
Hey, I was wondering what file yours saves at when you record with XAVC S? When I record with XAVC S mode, it seems to save the file as .mp4 even though it uses up a lot more space. I use a sandisk 64gb extreme SDXC card which is class 10. Thanks
Yeah you probably aren't using the right card. Even though you are selecting XAVC-S it's switching back to MP4 because you don't have the right card. You need a SDXC formatted card. The Class 10 means nothing. It's a buzz word. Similar if I said "this product does HD" could mean it does 720p or 4k. You'd want to know specifics, so ignore class 10. The important part is does it WRITE at over 50Mbs. Not read but Write. If it's 45 like the SanDisk extreme series then it's too slow. Also I've found U1 and U3 don't matter if all the other specs are correct. In the past U3 often meant the write speed was around 30 but now I don't know what U3 means. U1 I do believe means faster but I don't see most newer cards using this anymore. Anyway I know this is all a pain, below is the card I use. I link to BestBuy because everytime I tried to order this card off Amazon they kept sending me the wrong ones. Basically gave up trying and bought this. Works great though a bit expensive. www.bestbuy.com/site/sandisk-pixtor-advanced-64gb-microsdxc-class-10-uhs-3-memory-card-red-gold/7801144.p?id=1219290680472&skuId=7801144
MarkHawkCam Hey Mark, liked your video, great side by side videos too! I sure hope ***** comes up with a flat lens door for this thing cause I already got one without realizing they didn't have that for this model.
Hello, can AZ1 record video while being connected to external power bank ? Overall does this model is compatible/supports charging from external power banks? If yes, could you list some models or volts amper parameters of power banks output with which AZ1 really works? At Sony web is mentioned that for chargink through USB you should first turn off the camera, and that it would not charge if camera is ON. Mine AZ1 doesnt work with power bank 500mah/1A outputs.. found on net only information about AS30v that USB charging needs 1.5A Could you clear this situation with charging AZ1 from external power banks while recording? Thanks a lot
+YUKU You'll need to use the sony play memories phone app. Can't recall off the top of my head the pathway to it but it's one or two button presses in.
My sony hdr az1 (controlled via the app) takes in xavc s mode 400mb per minute storage space. no matter what fps setting i am using. is that normal? wtf
please make a video comparing the az1 vs as1000, is there anything better other than size ? improved quality ? why is ti beneficial having a smaller cam if you need other full charged devices to operate the cam ? maybe the as1000 is better after all .. you tell me :)
Alexander Sanchez This camera is much smaller and doesn't really for in those cases. Not sure it'd work out the way you'd hope. Could run into some issues since it isn't designed for the AZ1.
the LIVE STREAM application is a WIN WIN that is a huge selling point for me for this sony as well as the size and shape of it.. more ergonomic than the go pro series of action cam's nothing against go pro i just prefer the Sony HDR AZ1 it's really compact yet works very well.
you don't need wifi or use a wifi system like your cell phone uses a wifi system. The wifi referred to is the wifi that the camera emits and the wrist controller finds. It is a small mini network from cam to viewer with very weak signal that only transmits maybe 10 feet without obstruction. to shoot video just press the red button on top and press again to stop. the wrist band uses the wifi to take control of the camera and display the picture. Great little camera and very well made! An app on your phone will use the same mini wifi emitted from the cam just like the wrist controller But you don't need either to use the camera, just point and shoot.
Some really curious design decisions in this camera. The inability to change modes on the actual camera makes very little sense. The lack of internal improvements vs. the AS100 is disappointing. And finally, the battery life is a huge concern. You mentioned how bad the battery life was for the AS100, and seeing as how this battery is nearly half the size, I can't imagine it will be good. The only use I can see for this camera is if you NEED the smallest and lightest camera possible.
Hello THX for this rewiev, Its really useful..but ive got one question for u...? I bought this cam before few days and with it a bought micro SD card 128 gb ....but here comes the problem, when i insert the card to the cam, it shows me that I am possible to record about 12 hours od video... But camera really records only 1 hour. Well, do you know where is problem? Does cam support this capacity 128gb? I'll be pleasured if u tell me more..thx so much....
Marek Kulhavý When you record for 1 hour what happens? Does it stop recording or does it start a new file? Most of the limit on these cameras is 64 but never personally invested in a 128 yet. Could be the issue.
Oh, wait. Confused. So when they say it's available, they mean it's built into the live view remote unit and not the camera? Huh... not sure how I feel about this as that can be very confusing.
MarkHawkCam I think a few people might be, but if you look here: www.sony.net/Products/actioncam/en-us/products/cameras/HDR-AZ1VR/ Quote "Control Action Cam Mini with the supplied Live-View Remote RM-LVR2V. It enables remote cam playback*1 and movie deletion, GPS logging and transfer to the cam" The GPS logo is now absent from the camera and is on the live view remote AND Here is where the GPS antenna is located in the remote helpguide.sony.net/cam/1410/v1/en/contents/TP0000553382.html?search=gps helpguide.sony.net/cam/1410/v1/en/contents/TP0000553445.html?search=gps So no RM-LVR2V no GPS but on the bright side if you have 5 HDR-AZ1's you only need 1 RM-LVR2V to record data to all of them.
yegoshin Went and spoke with people at the Sony Store in our area. The new remote has a giant GPS label on the front. Thanks for helping clear this up.
MarkHawkCam Cool, maybe you could ask them what the deal is with it not working at all? There is a problem with it seemingly see this thread for more, essentially the GPS is not being recorded by the camera even though it on: community.sony.com/t5/Action-Cam/hdr-az1-camera-gps-overlay/td-p/457882
Sony did cut corners. the case is less than useless. Not only is there no dive door the "hold" switch on the case doesnt connect to the switch on the camera. Like i said less than useless. The camera itself is rather good. Splashproof and takes great quality video.
nice studio speakers brother. good stuff and yes by the way i like the sony HDR AZ1 it's excellent gear. sound quality by far blows away the GO PRO stuff.. as far as video quality it's decent and on par I.M.O. with most of the GO PRO offerings out there. i like the Sony one because of the remote wrist view and also the wiifii stuff as well as G.P.S technollogy and the Sony smart phone app that allows you to record and stop record and see whats in your shot just from looking at your smart phone thats awesome stuff..
"Update" just to let everyone know Sony just came out with an update for this HDRAZ1 on 12-18-2014,go to their website or connect your camera to ActionCam movie creator if you don't have it downloaded it, then 1-Go to settings 2-on the right should say "update" and look for the 1.01 update for GPS and pictures.it took a while, I have a mac so you have to pick the right download for your pc.follow the steps, my pc shut of because of the screen saver and had to start all over again removing battery and all, good luck!
Had no idea they were updating the remote. Would have grabbed the bundle instead. The new one is the RM-LV2V. No way to buy it on it's own right now. Boo...
Several users are unable to use the GPS logging feature of the remote control. Can you confirm that your sample actually has a log file in \PRIVATE\SONY\GPS, more precisely the log file actually has NMEA data in it? community.sony.com/t5/Action-Cam/hdr-az1-camera-gps-overlay/m-p/457882#U457882
I've been reading this a lot. I know the camera is generating that file but since I don't have the GPS remote and can't buy it solo, I haven;t been able to mess around with it. Do you know if these users are trying to use the new Action Cam software to check the GPS data or the older software from last year?
MarkHawkCam Actually the software usage is completely irrelevant. The log file gets generated at time of recording and should be populated with the data regardless of what you use for post processing. I actually have no intentions of using the software I just want to have access to the GPS data in some completely unrelated way. Unfortunately the log files, while there are empty. But either way, I did try to use the latest software from Sony with no luck. It will show that there is GPS data embedded (the icon for the file present as the matching log file is on the SD card) but it will not overlay speed or position data onto the video.
MarkHawkCam Exactly! The question is whether you have any kind of leverage compared to the rest of us to get this fixed by Sony ASAP. Right now the GPS functionality does not work on this camera, period.
not much. Mainly becuase the PR people I do meet at Sony always seem to leave. I'll see what I can do though. Sometimes they respond to me on twitter. I'll try Friday when it's not a holiday and see what they say.
MarkHawkCam Hello! In your opinion, which will be on drugs shall have to I take(set), video level enters as20 / as30 / and az1 knowing that I make especially of the mountain bike and the ski, I like the mountain, thank you:)
Might be the X1000V but that just came out and I am still reviewing it. AS100V/200V might be good but the small form factor of the AZ1 would probably be my choice. Just make sure the mount you want is compatible with the AZ1. It's smaller size can make it questionable if it'll fit or not. However if it attaches via a standard tripod mount, it'll mount just fine.
gotta say...I'm thru the roof fed up with this camera. I can't even get the wrist remote to sync with the camera. I just keep getting the spinning symbol on the wrist screen. Getting ready to send it back.
the battery life is NOT what they claim it to be it's not horrible but it's more like about an hour. if your lucky you can squeeze out an hour and 15 minutes of record time. depending on the temperature outside.. and if your batt was properly conditioned and charged.
Bryan Calhoun agreed, the only thing I'll add though is it's better about not draining as much power as the cameras before it when sitting ideal / before it shuts down.
This camera is amazing. I bought a used one for $90 from B&H to see how good it is. I like it better than my GoPro Hero+. The size is so small and perfect for running sports. but text says Gopro Hero 4.

I don't find on internet accessories designed for HDR-AZ1, thats why I'm asking.

Thanks
You need the San Disk Extreme (64gb U1) expensive but read the description here!

MarkHawkCam Hey Mark, liked your video, great side by side videos too! I sure hope ***** comes up with a flat lens door for this thing cause I already got one without realizing they didn't have that for this model.
Miguel Esguerra It's been almost a year with no dive case. Not sure we're ever going to get one :(
Excuse me, how to fix 04-03 error?
Hello, can AZ1 record video while being connected to external power bank ? Overall does this model is compatible/supports charging from external power banks? If yes, could you list some models or volts amper parameters of power banks output with which AZ1 really works? At Sony web is mentioned that for chargink through USB you should first turn off the camera, and that it would not charge if camera is ON. Mine AZ1 doesnt work with power bank 500mah/1A outputs.. found on net only information about AS30v that USB charging needs 1.5A
Could you clear this situation with charging AZ1 from external power banks while recording? Thanks a lot
I was under the assumption you couldn't. I'll do some testing when I can.
MarkHawkCam thanks a lot I'll be waiting for results
How do i turn the steady shot on? Just got it last night
+YUKU You'll need to use the sony play memories phone app. Can't recall off the top of my head the pathway to it but it's one or two button presses in.
+YUKU Or you can buy the Live View Remote, I own one myself and it works like an charm, you can change all the settings and everything
+HKY CITY if I get the live action bracelet will it still come with the case
Can u change the FOV.....
Working on it instagram.com/p/uqU3cQsuK6
thank you :)
no microphone jack????? thats a huge step back!!!!
Which one do you think is better, go pro hero 4 black or Sony hdr az1?
i was wondering the same, after some UA-cam and Google i decided for the az1, lighter, smaller, and cheaper... even with the live view remote bundle.
can we connect external mic on this camera?
+cem oğuz I'll double check tonight but I don't think so.
Awesome Video very informative Thanks =)
How can I do a flat lens for this camera??
There was never a flat lens released for the Sony AZ1.
I could use a flat lens of other sony action cam no matter the buttons?
Alexander Sanchez This camera is much smaller and doesn't really for in those cases. Not sure it'd work out the way you'd hope. Could run into some issues since it isn't designed for the AZ1.
Search for HereisNic - he found a solution.
the LIVE STREAM application is a WIN WIN that is a huge selling point for me for this sony as well as the size and shape of it.. more ergonomic than the go pro series of action cam's nothing against go pro i just prefer the Sony HDR AZ1 it's really compact yet works very well.
How do. I video my vacation trip when theirs no wifi in the area
you don't need wifi or use a wifi system like your cell phone uses a wifi system. An app on your phone will use the same mini wifi emitted from the cam just like the wrist controller But you don't need either to use the camera, just point and shoot.
thanks for the video. it helped with my decision.
i want all of them got a use for each one
Can you fully disable beeps and what is the max distance for live view.
The only use I can see for this camera is if you NEED the smallest and lightest camera possible.
ty
Why can't I hear the sounds when I'm using my cell phone
LOGICIEL FOR MONTAGE PLEASE ??
FYI, Sony moved the GPS from the camera (like it was in AS100 and AS30) to the new Live View Remote (RM-LVR2V).
Oh, wait.
It enables remote cam playback*1 and movie deletion, GPS logging and transfer to the cam" The GPS logo is now absent from the camera and is on the live view remote AND Here is where the GPS antenna is located in the remote helpguide.sony.net/cam/1410/v1/en/contents/TP0000553382.html?search=gps
helpguide.sony.net/cam/1410/v1/en/contents/TP0000553445.html?search=gps
So no RM-LVR2V no GPS but on the bright side if you have 5 HDR-AZ1's you only need 1 RM-LVR2V to record data to all of them.
yegoshin Went and spoke with people at the Sony Store in our area. The new remote has a giant GPS label on the front. Thanks for helping clear this up.
MarkHawkCam Cool, maybe you could ask them what the deal is with it not working at all? There is a problem with it seemingly see this thread for more, essentially the GPS is not being recorded by the camera even though it on:
community.sony.com/t5/Action-Cam/hdr-az1-camera-gps-overlay/td-p/457882
I'll try and see if I can find anyone to respond. Their PR people come and go so often.
Did you know that the white colour is not there because of design but because of providing the camera from heating up to much?
But it also makes it look so much cooler! Get it! cooler... Chill out, was a ice joke.
I have the camera but it only goes to 5 m
Bryan Calhoun Thanks :D Still waiting to get the Subwoofer one day. Maybe if I stop buying so many cameras
How to Pronounce Zeiss :)
Marek Baczynski thank you :D
Sony hdr-az1 vs as100)))& Sony hdr-az1 vs gopro 4!!!Please!!))
Something like that coming soon. In fact filming it today after work.
MarkHawkCam I want to see AZ1 vs HERO4Black)))
"Update" just to let everyone know Sony just came out with an update for this HDRAZ1 on 12-18-2014,go to their website or connect your camera to ActionCam movie creator if you don't have it downloaded it, then
1-Go to settings
2-on the right should say "update" and look for the 1.01 update for GPS and pictures.it took a while, I have a mac so you have to pick the right download for your pc.follow the steps, my pc shut of because of the screen saver and had to start all over again removing battery and all, good luck!
It was good decision to remove gps from camera to improve performance of battery
The AZ1 has built in GPS but can be turned off.
(Looking into this, might be confused on my info.)
MarkHawkCam The GPS is on the wrist remote now
Had no idea they were updating the remote. Would have grabbed the bundle instead. The new one is the RM-LV2V. No way to buy it on it's own right now. Boo...
i have this camera
MarkHawkCam
Actually the software usage is completely irrelevant.
Just checked about 40 GPS files. All Blank except this.
@Sonygps/ver5.0/wgs-84/20141026222457.000/
MarkHawkCam
Exactly!
I don't understand your question. Can you rephrase it?
MarkHawkCam what is the Best cam Sony ? For Mountain activities :)
Cant scan the code . The app is 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼
gotta say...I'm thru the roof fed up with this camera.
Bryan Calhoun agreed, the only thing I'll add though is it's better about not draining as much power as the cameras before it when sitting ideal / before it shuts down.
it's pronounced Carl Tzais.
This camera is the most un-user friendly piece of junk!
