The staff of that predatory TikTok dentist Kenny Smiles left one in someone's mouth for 10 min and it broke apart while they were removing it from her mouth. She aspirated a chunk of the plaster and Kenny and staff did nothing, even though the patient was in clear discomfort and just continued with the dental procedure. She ended up needing to see a cardio-thoracic surgeon to remove bits of it from her lungs. (and aside from this, he was sending her harassing texts talking about how hot she was, asking for pics, and sending inappropriate videos of himself)

1. Digital scans are great. They help that % of patients with a heavy gag reflex, and are also great for keeping records digitally. Wouldn't judge an orthodontist based on that though xD
2.IPR is not something new and has nothing to do with extractions, IPR is not done to prevent extractions, but to gain that extra 1-3mm of space. You don't extract teeth for 3mm of space :P I just did a longer video on teeth extractions in orthodontics if interested.
3. Headgear is pretty difficult to use correctly. It's that question on the ortho exams that every1 is scared off. However, It still has it's place in patients younger then 11 years old for example (based on literature) where you can't use mini-implants (TADs) because of bone development.
I would actually consider headgear a mark of very rounded and knowlegable orthodontist, but it IS used rarely these days because patients don't wear it and because of the limited age where it's indicated over TAD's.

I just had extensive dental work at Aspen Dental, they used both the purple and blue silicone stuff on trays as well as the 3D imagery. I now have a great smile with a full upper and partial lower. I saw how I would look before they even pulled a single tooth. It was amazing.
I mean, my orthodontist uses every kind of modern tech available, doesn't insist on taking teeth out (except wisdom teeth, of course) in favor of IPR and what not, and also has tremendous experience with regular braces, lingual braces, Invisalign, Damon Q etc., but still does the oldschool impression. And that's because of one simple reason: she doesn't have this wand you're mentioning. Judging an orthodontist's view on the progress in medicine based on just that... doesn't seem to me like a good reason in and of itself to run away from the doctor. There gotta be extra checks to this
My dentist does have the wand, but they do still use the impression goop. A specific example is for making a temporary crown.

I got both from the same dentist. I got the goopy stuff. Then I kinda fell off in the middle of my treatment. I came back and they needed impressions again but they did it digitally

just had to drop a comment to say how amazing this video was.
Both my old ortho and new one does the disgusting vomit inducing thingy and the scans. They do both.
Seventies child over here; of course I got the darn molds in the 80s. I still have my plaster mold. Yep. I do. My dentist today has all the cool stuff, of course he's out of the general health care plan (Belgium, EU) and is more expensive, but: well worth the extra 10-20 euro you have to spend per visit. That goop could probably take out all my fillings. Nah-uh. No more. And gone are the days you have to have all those "tubes" on the bib in front of you. Suction of saliva, all that, it's all done very different nowadays.
I went to a new age dentist for a cleaning and the device she used sent vibrations into my brain. I said that next time please use the old time instruments.
I had the goop tray, headgear (night only) for overbite, and 8 teeth pulled for crowding in the early 2010s, not sure if those were still commonplace or not at that time 😢

I had the digital scanning done. It was difficult & uncomfortable. But I would still prefer it over the goop.
Last time I had to have an impression done, I found it really hard to breath. Dredd having anything major done now

I hated those impressions (and headgear was the worst!) 😭 Had my braces off for more then a decade now and I’m glad things have started to change.
I had the goop impressions before braces and the scan impressions for my temporary retainer! A lot easier for everyone.
Yup. More than a few goop impressions. Same with the fluoride (don’t think that’s done anymore ). I had the braces that went completely around each tooth. The headgear. I was rocking all of it back in the 80s.

I’m so curious how they put those braces on around each tooth and I’m especially wondering how it worked when the gaps close? How did they take them off after your teeth spaces are tight?
@@songbird377 honestly, I don’t remember. I do remember thinking the same thing at the time (we’re talking about 30 years ago!). The retainers were way different too. I’m wondering if all the gaps weren’t super closed? Or the tooth encapsulation was way thinner than what you’d think? (Like the space of floss???). But it came off without a problem.
Kids these days have no idea how good they’ve got it. 😂
I had a consult at an office that had a cone and beam scanners which takes a ct scan and a digital impression at the same time. They didn’t need the wand. The ortho could move individual teeth around in the 3-D image he had.
i had my braces on since 2022 and they still use this putty thing, but one thing for sure my gag reflexes got completely shut down because i don't think i'd ever felt like throwing up in the public lmao

That goop was literally the worst because I had a hard time breathing when I had it done at least the last time it was done on me.

Digital impressions are good in theory but they don’t work for everyone. I have jaw problems that makes it so I can open my mouth about half as wide as a typical adult. My dentist and his staff were as gentle as they could be but, it still ended up being fairly miserable procedure.

sorry but must dissagree, silicon impression are the best , digital ones need some development more, they ar esimply not as acurate as silicon impression or scanners in lab. Cool gadget but problems on later steps making projects

When I got my kickboxing mouthguard and Invisalign, I got the digital impression. A much better experience compared to the impression goop I had when I had braces to correct my overbite!
We had people do dental impressions with goop for forensic science class and one guy threw up from the goop. I also have a friend with a sensitive gag reflex and impression goop was a nightmare for him!
Gen Xer here. Got the dreaded goop tray, metal bands around each tooth, and (for a while) headgear, though mine was just a single strap + a metal wire. Before my full-band braces were installed, I needed 4 molars pulled and a lower lingual arch to maintain space. Getting those teeth pulled is what started my dental phobia (which I still have); going to the orthodontist was a cakewalk by comparison. 😂The lingual arch stayed in my mouth even after my braces were removed. I don’t remember how long afterward I finally got that annoying thing taken out, but it was great to finally have those last 2 metal bands removed from my molars.
To this day, I’m low key jealous of kids and adults who’ll never know the agony of a mouthful of metal bands.
Can I ask are you familiar with pulling teeth together for a baby with cleft lip with alveolar gum involvement? My son had his cleft lip and palate repair but his cleft was complete at one time and he has a space into his upper gum on the left side. They say he will never get the lateral incisor but can get an implant and braces to pull it all together. Any advice for a cleft mom when dealing with the orthodontist on the cleft team? We tried to do the NAM pre surgery but he didn’t tolerate it well, but the space in his upper gum has pretty much closed well just since closing his palate. They used the digital scans to make the invisilign trays for the NAM. It was aweful the ortho made his bleed and couldn’t capture one side of his mouth. This was all for a six month old baby. Hoping we have better luck as he gets older with his orthodontist for braces after bone graft surgery. He will prob need a palate expander as well. Is that old school? Is there a newer way of doing that instead of turning a key? I had that same thing done 30 years ago as well 😊

I had the both digital scan and the goop done. Prior to my Invisalign treatment. Not sure why but on my 4th tray right now, 25 in total.
Doc I have a question for you I want some of my tooth to be pulled out However every time I go to the dentist I’m having high BP due to nervous or anxious feeling but it seems it’s so hard for me to control the anxious feeling . What should I do doc for me to decrease the BP? Should I go to MD so that they can prescribe me sedatives ?
My dentist just recently got the scanner and used it to make me a bite guard cause I have bruxism. Also to make a partial denture as I sadly had to get a loose tooth removed because of periodontitis. Unfortunately I'm pre-disposed to it through genetics. It wasn't all bad tooth brushing..i wasn't good as a kid but have used every tool in the book to Clean my teeth in adulthood so yea. Anyway... point... he git the 3d scanner thingy...

the impression is actually not as bad as you think! i was really worried for mine when i was getting my retainers. it was uncomfortable, but it's not that bad.

I don't remember if the dentist's office I currently go to does impressions, but that doesn't matter if they do a good job on everything else.
not for invisalign but for a custom bite plate to relieve my overstressed nerve roots (never mind the TMJ issues) from clenching....yeah...as someone with a horrid gag reflex I shudder at ever having that goop in my mouth again (worst of all...I got one hell of a good impression- damn thing got stuck and the tech had workout getting it off! It was funny after the fact...but not during!

I’m in dental assistant school right now, and we’ve taken these impressions a few times. I really hope I get into an office with the 3D scanner bc those alginate impressions are a pain in the butt, and I know most people don’t like them, like the girl in the video suggests. 😂

I have gotten both. Plaster mold at 12 (18 years ago) and digital mold at 30
I actually threw up while getting a dental impression because the girl who did mine was very new and put waaaaay too much in, so it was actually going down my throat x.x. She did feel really bad when she pulled it out and saw the like trail of putty that was in my throat.

Goop impressions. As a matter of fact I needed crowns. And that's what they did. I needed 3 crowns at one point that number has since increased. I hated braces. I was just in pain all the time every day. Not just from what the braces were doing but because I had undiagnosed migraines at the same and major snus issues. If wasn’t a migraine it was a a sinus headache or one way too many sinus infections. I went prior to slltbis to see what u could do to get a good smile. I thought braces round 3 here we go. Nope j have been told worst thing I could do for my teeth at this point. My moms former boss a dentist said you don’t need braces just crown every single tooth. Not every tooth in my mouth needs a crown. Now that I have had root canals and crowns. Definitely glad I did not take her advice. But when yiur Dentist office is also your dentist home Its already weird. She bought the house and basically made the first floor all the practice area, waiting room. Typical dentist office look minus the chandelier. And baby gates at the top and bottom of the stairs so her little dog who has since passed away could watch and bark at who ever he pleased. Before I moved my dental visit s as a kid were relatively painless. Then they started to get painful. Basically if the dentist and his wife the front desk running, scheduler extrodinare seriously no idea how she put with him. If they had a fight or were fighting. Your teeth and gums were his lunch bag, stress ball. Either way your teeth and gums paid for it and you left in pain. I got 90 percent of the way with braces. I had spacers. Expanders, braces twice and then retainer. One was like and invisalign the other was that what I guess is plastic and metal. I also had two orthodontist. The first one moved took my bracess off for some reason. I went to the second one for which I had oanic attacks all the time. New patients got goodies. I still have the mug i got from the first orthodontist. Second orthodontist added panic attacks to that. His welcome to the practice goodie bag. Was a t shirt, a water bottle, disclosing tablets, a tooth brush and some floss. .when the braces he put on finalky came off. I was like never again. I hated ny retainers just as much. After the experiences with braces and dentistry so far. Dentistry of course I will keep up with. Ortbontia well I am 34 the time has passed for orthodontic appliances to do anything helpful for my teeth. Plus I was terrible at keeping my teeth and braces clean. No matter how hard I tried i ended up with enough cavsties 13 I believe for the orthodontist to be like your 90 percent fine. Bracees are coming off and back to your gbersl dentist to get your cavafies taken care of. I often wonder if during my time with braces retsines and expanders, spacers if anything could be done to not be in so much pain between the pressure on my teeth the constant migraines and sinus headaches. Anyone deal with chronic headaches and migraines while in braces? What helps you with the pain ?

I got the Goop Impressions Top and Bottom Plus NightBrace and Retainer Then Lost My Retainer at one point Only to Reach Adulthood and have Spaced Out Teeth with a medium sized open bite I can stick the tip of my tongue through it when I put my teeth together and,Because My Dentist was so Careless to Not Place a Crown on My Left Bottom Molar my filling fell out eventually and the whole top of my tooth rotted off. And my right one on the same Set in the Back Did the Same.😂😂 but I Still Have All of My Upper Front and Lower Front and Left and Right Sides Set of Teeth even though my Upper Left Canine is a Snaggle Tooth

I would never run just because of goopy impressions. Our local orthodontist is second generation at the practice and has treated at least 10 friends and family members. We are in a smaller town and I guess he can't afford the new machine yet. His prices are fair, making it accessible to more people who need them, and his practices are good. No head gear, no teeth pulling, etc. We have another local orthodontist that has the scanner, but he is expensive and an A**hole.
