I bought this mixer nearly the same day Luke did put out this video and that thing still runs like a charm (Dezember 2021)... don't pay a 100 Quid for the other ones out there... even if those are slightly better than this thing.
Just have to say as a laboratory scientist in the pharmaceutical industry, be very VERY careful with vortex mixers. As general health and safety these types of shakers are banned in most modern labs as they cause a condition called "white finger" or "vortex finger" which is due to the constant high rpm vibrations cause nerve damage in the extremities and makes it feel like you have constant pins and needles. Don't hold it down for minutes at a time, do short bursts. Do not do multiple bottles over multiple days. Use a clamp stand (this is the type we use in labs) to hold the paint pot instead of your hand. Or Jerry rig a cheap jigsaw with a quickclamp to shake the pot with more force but lower RPM (my hobby solution). I'm not saying they don't work, I'm just doing my civic duty to inform everyone why there are so many of these 2nd hand online. Labs don't want them cos they are a health risk, keep hobbying safely people.
I doubt a person owning a paint shaker is going to use it in long enough stints and with enough frequency to get white finger. you shake up a paint with a vortex shaker and it will be fine for weeks before needing any substantial re shaking
i got one too for my back (yes my back, i have a bad disk and only sex shops sell shit like this now) And i found the vortex mixed did a better job faster.
Got a cheap 20 quid one myself. Have to say that the vortex mixer, along with mixing balls, are a must have for army painter paints (which I like) and works great on the other brand's paints too.

Hello - Look at E-Bay and by yourself a laboratory vortex mixer - second hand. Cheaper, professional quality, robust (metal), but second hand. Gets the job done!
I've tried. Still can't find one for less than $70. Most are more than that and the ones that come up cheaper look like they've been in constant use since the 1970s, by a serial killer.
I made a paint shaker using an old jigsaw that was going to be binned and a handy clamp. A 10 second blast on full is all that's needed to restore my paints. The paints are always much mixed than I could to manually.
I use a small sanding machine up side down. The tip of the paint bottle fits in one of the holes at the bottom. Works great and you dont have to spend money on a extra paint shaker.
I bought the exact same one! I drop two glass 6mm boiling beads in the pots as I pull them to use and then vortex mix them. It does, as you say; "work". Same story - I wasn't going to pay $100 bucks for one, but for the price - it does seem to make the task a little easier. Cheers!
Price already up to over $26 - Luke is helping drive up demand and the price! On Amazon in the US it is over $56. Think I will stick to the paint mixing agitators (stainless steel balls) - you can get 100 for $11 on Amazon.
How hard do you need to press down on bottle to make the shaker operate? Couldnt you use elastic bands or something to hold it in place as that cant be good for acuracy once you start painting! Also i dont think its healthy to hold stuff that vibrates like that for long either (could add rude comments about rabbits etc but wont!).
Luke please consider compiling your videos of specific subjects into a video form of a book that people could purchase and download and be able to follow through from making battle boards, light display boards your terrains, painting of your terrains structures I just picked up a fellow terrain maker book on terrain. there seems to be gaps and holes in it for intermediate to higher level terrain makers. I've enjoyed your videos for the last 4 years on UA-cam sometimes it's hard for me to go and find specific videos that I need to review before building and I would think it would be worth my time and money to purchase from you a collection of your videos in a subject / video form to be able to review at any time. Thank you for this consideration and hope you and your family are safe in this covid and doing well.
Looks like something I purchased a few years back when I was feeling extra lonely and single.... I imagine if I put the paint in too it would have shaken it up pretty damn good!
I use a Nail Varnish shaker (Amazon), along with a couple of steel balls per paint bottle. Does a first class job. Similar price too. I did try something similar to the one you show but truthfully I didn't like it. For a start you need to hold it in place. The Nail Varnish shaker on the other hand has a rubber type band, you strap it down and switch it on. Then carry on with something else for a minute or two. Secondly I found the laboratory type to be uncomfortable on the fingers, holding the paint bottle in place.
I use Mission Models,Faskolor, Pro-Line, and Wicked airbrush paints for my Rc bodies and am looking to get a mixer. Would you recommend this over the Badger Paint mixer?
No better words could be spoken in God's own county than these "I just shake my paints by hand, im a yorkshire man","how much" & " right, piss off and leave me alone anyway"
I just got this for my 40th. It seems to work very well. I only have Vallejo paints the basic 16 colors set. All paints had separated inside the bottle as I dont paint as much as I should and it seemed to mix them right up without issue.
I actually have that same paint shaker. I had carpal tunnel in both hands, I had the corrective surgery in my main hand and it's great. I bought a paint shaker just to do less with my main hand to lower the risk of a reoccurrence, which can happen. I still have not had the corrective surgery in my offhand, covid nixed that for me. But tell you what, shaking paint in that hand, the hand goes numb quick, which tells me something as simple as shaking a paint pot can be a factor in carpal tunnel syndrome. So, better to not do it, that's why I got the paint shaker.
Do you wear anything to absorb the force of the shaker since it can cause nerve damage with repeat use since it's applying alot of force shaking your entire arm.
I use a nail varnish shaker with glass/stainless steal bearings in the pots it does a great job of armypainter to GW pots in less than a minute and cost less than £20
I kept seeing content creators use one and I did a lot of research and thought yeah maybe one day. I ended up getting a $20 gift card to Amazon so I thought right. Lemme look and I found that same exact shaker... works great! I had already invested into the stainless steel agitators so I use those as well... end of the day... I've got something that'll save my arms and hands lol
The efficiency of the shaking is increased...tenfold? I dunno, some fold anyway....by the inclusion of a couple small hematite beads. That they are cheap is a bonus. They also assist with manual shaking, so a nice help when you can't be arsed to drag out the shaker device. Also your assistant is the bestest! Cheers!
I tried hematite beads with my Army Painter paints, still had to shake by hand for 2-3 minutes to get the paint mixed well. I got a vortex mixer, and the Army Painter paints go from 100% separated to creamy smooth within 30 seconds.
@@abrannan Indeed - the beads work the best in conjunction with the mixer (By Our Powers Combined and all that). I have found that they do also help when the paint needs a bit o' mixing but not the full on maschinenkrieger treatment. ;-)
