Hey Antonio. I own 2 tuxedos and wear them multiple times a year. I just invested in my first midnight navy 1 button shawl lapel, jetted pockets, etc. it's very spot on to the James Bond skyfall tuxedo. I usually sport mother of pearl studs and links or all black. Can't wait to wear it this NY eve. Just wanted to share my story with you. Your the only channel on UA-cam that is spot on with men's evening wear. Great job Antonio. Keep up the great work.
Antonio: kudos to you on the video. It matches perfectly with the article! I have owned and worn a tuxedo since high school and I made it classic from the beginning. The rentals I saw at my prom alarmed me no end. Hardly anyone else was dressed in proper 'Black Tie'. It wasn't until college when I had to have a tux for choir and then it was totally proper in every way for every situation. While I did purchase the cotton/poly shirts the tux dealer had, I also insisted on full cotton dress tux shirts with French Cuffs. I also insisted on braces. Today I own five tuxes since I go to lot of events requiring Black Tie and every suit is worn with a bow tie and cummerbund (and with spring it's always a bit of color). Shirts, jewelry and the other elements are white or black, but with the braces, I always nearly insist that they be white as they blend in to the shirt. The bow tie for me was not the big deal many men seem to think of it as.I'm all thumbs when it comes to tying one, but I'm trying to get better. Every year I get better. A cummerbund for me is required and I bought my last set at Jos. Bank. I fully believe that men get somewhat afraid when it comes to this clothing. Why? it basically is a suit that has a few details a daytime suit will not have. It fits the same, it raises you to another level and the average man should not be afraid to wear it. I always feel 100 times better when wearing a tux (this weekend I will for sure need it) and the compliments I get from those around me when wearing it always are positive. In fact, too many times the wives of those men around me who own one say, "You should be wearing your tuxedo, dear." I don't want to be the argument starter, but what I have become is an advocate for the tux at the Symphony so, at least nobody wants to take me down too far (one day maybe?) for influencing the wife on husband dress. Still, owning a tux is the only way to go. Wearing it should be as automatic as an office suit for day time. Maybe the idea is catching on. I just thought I'd let you know you hit a bullseye and hope that more men will follow the idea and wear a tux more often than not, prom being harder to cure than all events combined. Keep stylin' and profilin'
Hey Antonio, thanks for doing this and all your other videos. They've really helped me mature my style since I found and subscribed to RMRS a two years ago!
New to your shows and very new to grooming. Your videos are a real motivation and they are all top-class. In this one, I wish you had been wearing Tux yourself so to make technicals more clear. Thanks
Antonio , what are your thoughts on dinner jacket and black trouser combination ? Where do they fall on the formality scale and on which occasions would you wear them?
White dinner jackets are for summer black tie events like cruises. Dinner jackets are somewhere between doublebreasted 3 piece suit with peak lapels and black tuxedo with a shawl collar
Would you go more into detail about alternative shirt options such as the fly front and wearing a traditional french placket shirt with MOP buttons. If wearing these options what type of cufflinks should you wear?
Antonio, you don't mind my suggested addition, I would inform your viewers that when wearing a cumberbund the "pleats" should be worn up. Traditionally that's where a gentleman tucked his tickets for the concert or opera. Even if he is function is a wedding or other similar event that requires no tickets, a cumberbund is still worn with pleats up.
Hi Antonio, Greetings from Turkey. I've been watching your videos for a couple of days and all of them are amazing. I wonder if you have a video for casual shirts such as plaid, flannel, chambray etc. I couldn't see one.
Great channel Antonio,I love all you videos. Please do a video on wrist watches, it is difficult to choose the right one with so many options out there. Cheers!
Hi Antonio Great video!! I need your help, I bought a Tuxedo for my wedding is a double breasted with peaked lapel, the lapel and the belt of the trousers are made of Velvet 1- The bow tie fabric has to match the lapel fabric right? 2- Wich type of collar shirt you recommend? wing or turndown? 3- Im not also sure the fabric type of the shoes, velvet or go with the shiny shoes Thanks! If anyone can give advice is more than welcome
My Opera shoes finally need to be replaced after 11 years, I came to look at your comments on that as I seem to have a problem finding closed lace oxfords and had to opt for some open lace. Cap toes vs non cap toe was the other concern. However, you may need to update this, the video is a decade old and a lot of these concepts are pretty outdated. No one seems to wear shirts with pleats or cummerbund's for some time now. For me the shiny vest seems like a prom thing for kids or weddings. I have been opting for a matching vest to the primary jacket material in case I need to take off the jacket, plus it helps when it's a bit cold.
Hi Antonio, the RMRS website has an article about boutennieres but doesn't answer this question I have. Is it acceptable to wear a boutonnière with a shawl lapel for a groom. I have never seen a shawl lapel with a button hole however I know that tailor's can add them to a shawl. What is the standard for wearing a flower with a shawl lapel? Can't find an answer anywhere!
thank you for yout tip.. I finally wore my first tux with confidence with your help. i wish i could show you how i look but i dont know where to send it. But thank you.i look up to you always.
Antonio, Your videos are truly top notch quality! Your video on "why you should be the best dressed man in the room". Has inspired me to up my fashion game. Thank you soo much.
Great video and excellent information provided which is usually the case. The only concern I have is that I am looking to wear a white suit jacket while trying to recreate this black tie outfit. Could you give me some advice?
keirmcfc White jackets are also a style of formalwear, but they follow their own etiquette and should not be worn to events designated as "black tie." You can read more on this: www.atailoredsuit.com/black-tie-formal-wear.html
Excellent presentation. North Americans are sadly lacking in sartorial mentoring but you certainly hit the mark ,well done. My only +/- is the wristwatch, it depends on which one....thanks, keep it up.
Antonio- Any thoughts on wearing a Gamsbart lapel pin with a tuxedo at my wedding? Gamsbart are fur & feather pins you'd know from hunter's hats in Bavaria & the Alps (think Ricola ad), but can be worn on lapels as well. This would be a nod to my mother's family, as well as the single break from a pure traditional tuxedo (per your instructions).
Greeting fellow relative? Same last name just pronounced different. So iam a Taylor thanks to my mum! Who was a master seamstress. So love all you info for sure! My question is Iam making my self and my sons tuxedo tailed jackets in red velvet with red satin lapel and red satin or black satin vest? Black tuxedo pants. I love red as you can see now tie red velvet or satin making both in the bigger butterfly style. My question is. Would this be to much? Occasion is black tie. Very formal! My kids and my wife all wear custom formal wear. Advise would be appreciated. Thank you
Antonio, what is your opinion on something I've seen popping up at tux rental stores touted as "black tie:" tailcoats? Also, is a pocket watch in matching metals not a good watch for black tie? I thought it was acceptable if you wear a waistcoat.
Enjoyed your video. I did want to point out that your graphic of the cumberbund had the pleats opening down, when in fact, they should open up. Hence, the nickname "crumb catcher".
Are tuxedos good for kids? I am a 13 year old and I have a midnight blue tuxedo, I got that color BECOS I saw that in Skyfall, can u plz tell is it good for me or not? Can u also tell a tuxedo goes with a cummerbund or a tie??
Would a shirt that is a hidden fly be acceptable? That's where there's a flap that covers the button placket, which I've heard somewhere is more formal. Would this work?
Hi Antonio I've just subscribed... I love your channel. I'm almost 14... I try to wear a necktie or bow tie any occasion I get the opportunity to attend and I'd like to ask if there are a few brands that you could let me know about for dinner jackets, shirts, shoes and or pants/ trousers I am tired and honestly bored of my wardrobe. Any help would be appreciated.
Whoo! I knew I wasn't the only young man who actually gave a damn about my appearance! Seeing as your still growing, you definitely don't want to spend a lot of money on cloths. It probably wouldn't be a great idea for you to buy a $500 brand name suit just to have it not fit you the very next year. Personally, I shop vintage. Thrift stores and and garage/estate sales are great ways to get quality clothing for next to nothing, not to mention the air of old world class vintage clothes will give you. Oh, and there's a big market for old clothes online, so you can sell the clothes that don't fit you anymore for a profit!
Antonio, in another black tie video you mention James Bond and the satin finish, or lack thereof, in the lapel. Sean Connery used to wear jackets with satin cuffs. Was that something in style back in the 60s only and is it something that you can get away with wearing now? I really love that look!
Are there any made to measure stores that make great tuxedos? I'm a college student from Iowa, I'm starting to attend more professional events, and I'm looking to add some formal ware to my collection.
Matt B i advice you to order from suit supply, the quality is good and the price very low. the only half canvassed suits for under 400 (tuxedo) and 300 (ordinary suits).
Hi Antonio, great content as always. I wanted to ask if you had any advice specifically when renting tuxedos (I am a student at the minute and as much as I would like to, I don't have the funds to be able to shell out on purchasing one) I have found what I believe to be a "better than most" retailer who have a tailor available and are willing to make some minor adjustments when renting. However, is there anything I should watch out for specifically when renting that may kill the look, other than the pointers you've already covered in the video? Many thanks.
What type of fabric should The socks be Made out off, and how many buttons should The finner jacket have? I have heard that sometimes a white dinner jacket is more appropriate: when and why?
Btw: I have problems finding a low cut waistcoat here in Norway, can I pull off a normal waistcoat if its kind of low? (just three buttons, and not a shawl lapel like The jacket it self)
+Bjørn Stian Hansen Engebak Formal waistcoats often feature lapels, which is uncommon on most other vests. They tend to be cut much lower in the front than the waistcoats that accompany three-piece suits, leaving more of the formal dress shirt visible.
Antonio, I have a couple of questions on the black tie. First, I passionately hate bowtie, so is it possible to use a normal tie or an ascot to replace it? And also, I prefer not use white, so if the shirt is black or in a dark tone is it still possible?
Richard Kerr Formal attire does not mean suits and ties! It is a substantially higher dress code, requiring clothes that most men don’t own. Yes - for night time but for daytime, it would mean the stroller :)
What do you think of the punk tie look? Ive been going clubbing with my girlfriend and I usually wear black jeans, with black vans, a button shirt with the sleeves cuffed and a skinny black tie. Do you think its not stylish ?
That's beyond my area of expertise - I think if it gives you confidence and you meet your goals...........why not? Style is Expression......what you described sounds like it's your way of doing just that.
Love all the videos Antonio! I have a quick question, I have Prom coming up soon, and was planning on getting a Navy suit. Would black shoes suit that well, or should I go for a different color?
Joseph Woltke What is the dress code for your prom? Is it black tie or black tie optional? Read the full article here: www.realmenrealstyle.com/how-to-dress-for-prom/
Hi Antonio, long time no talk! The channel is looking great! I have a question for you that I can't seem to find an answer to: Because I'm a pro musician, I have to wear a tuxedo on a regular basis. One of the most annoying issues is the way my cuff links and studs bang and scrape against my instruments. The silly thing is that I feel the most comfortable with the cheap plastic studs and some knot links to help avoid scratching my instruments, and to kill the annoying ping or knocking sound that they make. But I would like to class up this a little bit with avoiding any kind of metal links and studs. I was thinking an option of knots like silk knot links, but in stud form. Do you know anyone that makes them or where I could get them custom made? I know that this idea would be less formal, but it would be more functional for me, and it could be the single rule that I break. Thanks man, and glad to see you're still keeping busy!
Dani Ayala Double-breasted jacket models are also acceptable. Read my detailed article in Art of Manliness: www.artofmanliness.com/2013/12/17/black-tie-how-to-wear-tuxedo/
Hello, Antonio, I've seen in several 007 movies James Bond wearing an outfit very similar to a tuxedo, but with a white jacket and a black trouser. When is it apropriate to wear "tuxedo" that has a white jacket?
White tie requires tails, but it can be appropriate to wear tails to very formal black tie events, so long as you are willing to look a bit more formal than everyone else.
+Alpha Stier You shouldn’t wear them in serious and high-formality business settings, or to somber affairs like funerals, but other than that they’re fair game for wearing with suits, slacks and sportcoats, or even just jeans and a casual collared shirt.
What if I reverse the colors of my tuxedo? jacket, dress pants, waistcoat, and bowtie all in ivory color matched with inner pleated shirt, pocket square, and patented leather shoes all in black. of course I will wear this at a formal lunch party instead of dinner.
Brown shoes are fine with a black suit aslong as you match any other leather in the outfit, brown belt, brown watch strap, just meed to make sure its the right shade
+Raymond Andrews Double-breasted jackets are almost always worn buttoned. It’s very unusual to unbutton one. www.realmenrealstyle.com/suit-button-rules/
Damned patent leather shoes: sweat your feet in the summer, freeze your feet in the winter. They don't last long, easily crack and break. A good leather oxford can last for years and with a little skill & practice you can polish them to a very high shine.
I would wear a black tux and a black bowtie rocking an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean (300 meters = 1,000 feet)Diver Watch. That would be amazing. I mean James Bond wore a black tux and a black bowtie and he rock an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Watch.

Can you do a video on hats at some point? I look forward to your input!
Violent2aShadow great hearing from you. This article should help: www.realmenrealstyle.com/9-classic-hat-styles/
Love all the videos Antonio! I have a quick question, I have Prom coming up soon, and was planning on getting a Navy suit. Would black shoes suit that well, or should I go for a different color?
Joseph Woltke What is the dress code for your prom? Is it black tie or black tie optional?

Hi Antonio, long time no talk! The channel is looking great!
I have a question for you that I can't seem to find an answer to:
Because I'm a pro musician, I have to wear a tuxedo on a regular basis.
+Nick Rosaci Music Project No idea. You might want to check this out - www.askandyaboutclothes.com/forum/showthread.php?88591-silk-knot-stud-set
Thanks. Disappointingly enough, it looks like it's discontinued. The search continues. I might see if my tailor can make me some.
hey antonio!! great videos! do you think double breasted tuxedos can still be worn? are they still fashionable?or should i go for the single breasted?
Dani Ayala Double-breasted jacket models are also acceptable.

Hello, Antonio,
I've seen in several 007 movies James Bond wearing an outfit very similar to a tuxedo, but with a white jacket and a black trouser.
When is it apropriate to wear "tuxedo" that has a white jacket?
White tie event :)
Thanks :)
I think you're actually referring to the white dinner jacket tuxedo.
+brokenseeker Yes, I think it's that. I just didn't know to refer to it.
Is that always apropriate for black tie events?
Matheus Seidel I think for outdoor occasions, in the garden, or in summer maybe. It's cream color, not white. white wool doesnt exist.
With the satin element, those buttons and all, it looks to me like the tux is really a cross between a business (i.e. real) suit and pyjamas.
What of tailcoats? When is it appropriate to wear tails?
White tie requires tails, but it can be appropriate to wear tails to very formal black tie events, so long as you are willing to look a bit more formal than everyone else.
+Jeffery Young And judged.
+SelfReferencingName Indeed you would be judged, but I've never been judged too harshly, and I've done it.
Great video.
Any rules on shave or no shave or if beard is allowed?
thegodson11 great hearing from you - this article should help: www.realmenrealstyle.com/how-grow-beard/
In Downton Abbey I've seen a half pointed bow tie
Can u do a video for skimpy tall guys ?
shah moin great hearing from you. I've already recorded a video on that topic. Click here to watch it: www.realmenrealstyle.com/style-tips-tall-men/

Great vid. Thanks!
It took me a while to understand what you meant when you said, while talking about the jacket, that the buttons must be covered.
Will a 2 button jacket work
BUDDY HUNTER no, only one closing button will work
Thank you sir
+Nelson Cunha You're always welcome sir!
your camera man could do better, I did nt gt the button part cos he did nt focus the camera on it
Blewusi George Selali thanks for the feedback
are wingtips acceptable
+Alpha Stier You shouldn’t wear them in serious and high-formality business settings, or to somber affairs like funerals, but other than that they’re fair game for wearing with suits, slacks and sportcoats, or even just jeans and a casual collared shirt.
Doesn't it look pike the one which Don Corleone wore? My regards to Mr. Corleone
Very informative. I dig the military references as well.
Marcus Ziemke thank you Marcus
What if I reverse the colors of my tuxedo? jacket, dress pants, waistcoat, and bowtie all in ivory color matched with inner pleated shirt, pocket square, and patented leather shoes all in black.
of course I will wear this at a formal lunch party instead of dinner.
can we wear tuxedo without bow tie or normal tie?
Ashish Pareek no
I've noticed that lately you have started to wear high-contrast clothes. Before you used to wear middle contrast clothes or am I wrong?
I WOULD LOVE TO LEARN WEAR TUXEDO
Thank you
I like how the guy who is lecturing us on how to wear a black tie has an unbuttoned collar and is wearing no tie. Did you not get the memo sir?
What about brown shoes?
A very nice education , the proper way of wearing Tuxedo dress. Thank you sir!
never wear brown shoes with a black suit
Brown shoes are fine with a black suit aslong as you match any other leather in the outfit, brown belt, brown watch strap, just meed to make sure its the right shade
not not with a Tux, you can but dont
dont wear brown shoes with a tuxedo, brown is informal, and tuxedo etiquette is black shoes.
Hey can just name the piece of cloth people mostly wear with a shirt which is tucked ...the cloth goes around the neck and hangs from both sides
hello Antonio im Dain andrews i am 12 using my dads phone how do i button my four button suit
+Raymond Andrews Double-breasted jackets are almost always worn buttoned. It’s very unusual to unbutton one. www.realmenrealstyle.com/suit-button-rules/
No wristwatch!!! A pocket-watch, or no watch at all !!!!
You can wear a watch if you want
george parente you can wear a watch if you want but, it should be slim for better look.
I would love to Wear a tuxedo
A relatively recent example of the midnight blue tux was on Daniel Day-Lewis at the Oscars (I believe) last year.
Yes - but it's not his first :)
good
Cool
+Nelson Cunha Thanks!
Real Men Real Style You're welcome
What about a pocket watch? Wouldn't it be more appropriate?
Is it bad to wear a waistcoat with a double breasted tuxedo jacket?
No vents on the dinner jacket
Damned patent leather shoes: sweat your feet in the summer, freeze your feet in the winter. They don't last long, easily crack and break. A good leather oxford can last for years and with a little skill & practice you can polish them to a very high shine.
I would wear a black tux and a black bowtie rocking an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean (300 meters = 1,000 feet)Diver Watch. That would be amazing. I mean James Bond wore a black tux and a black bowtie and he rock an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Watch.
