Stephen graham is an amazing actor but the guy who played milky has brilliant facial expressions the instant regret and the fact he thought combo would be more hostile but he just took it was amazing
Its actually really sad, Milky in the end in the cafe doesn't want to hurt Combo, Infact he can see and feel Combo was genuinely sorry, however it late for Milky to stop anything as promises where made that day in hospital, but you could feel Milky had personally forgiven him by the time Combo was taken, he crys because and it actually made ne feel very emotional.
Finally got around to watching it last night . The scene where Combo was taken away and taken to his final end was shockingly brilliant . It was so well acted they didn't even have to show the violent act to portray the shear terror of it. Stephen Graham who played Combo is an incredible actor !!
i mean in the movie milky was the only one in the gang that surprisingly tolerated Combo existence the longest while most of his white friends just avoided Combo like the plague.
Let’s not forget how good Milky is in this scene, he is genuinely remorseful for what’s about to happen, he’s in between good and bad, but knows the debt is there, simply incredible by both men
Not gonna lie i feel they both wronged i dont think either should have died milky was tapping woodies misses and combo was a racist in the past they both did shit in the past they could have found ways past it
It's also the magnitude of what he's done, having someone bumped off, as vengeful as his uncles may have been, it was something they couldn't carry out either, as seen when they passed combo over to two guys who walked a completely different world and could happily do it as a job.

watching this again is perpetual , you can instantly see the huge weight lifted off Combos shoulder and passed onto Milky; Now Milky turned out the one living with remorse and never ever being able to get a clean slate from it. Scarred. Someone had to carry the pain.

This final chapter between Milky and Combo, both Andrew Shim and Stephen Graham delivered THE most incredible performance I think I've ever seen. Shane Meadows is an absolute legend in his field. No one comes close.

I think Combo accepted his fate there, not at the cafe. Part of his growth was knowing he had to eventually answer for everything. He repented and died free. Now Milky lives with the guilt of his impulsive decision forever.
@@ReeseChown milky was just a pawn in this scenario as his family were the ones that decided on combos fate,he just delivered him but probably didn't count on combos regret and sadness at what he did which makes the guilt heavier on milky! Combo I believe thought he was just in for a beating and didn't fully understand how serious his situation was until he was in the van and saw the people at the end
Stephen Graham is criminally underrated as an actor.....some of his smaller screen stuff is incredible. I grew up in the 70's and 80's and encountered a few Combo's on the estate I was living on...This is England trajects all my feelings to those times. It's horrible yet appreciative.
Combo showed himself to be a man who was ready to change, he went to prison for murder he didn’t commit for his best friend… tried to change his life around after getting out prison and followed milky to hell thinking he was going to be able to make amends with him for the horrendous beating he did to milky, milkys family made a promise that they’d get an eye for an eye but I don’t think milky would’ve ever gotten over the fact he drove combo to his death no matter how Much anger he had inside over combo. Such a well written film & series and such a shame it’s probably something we will never get to see on our TV screens again.

Every so often I find myself returning to watch this scene. It's always heartbreaking. Almost unbearable to watch. I grew up in the mid to late 80s and I still remember that age of massive confusion, uncertainty, anger and fear - over race and 'identity'. I knew and saw many Combos. And almost all of them had that same sad story. And yes, at times, I had the experience, along with many others, to feel like Milky. It really is a vicious circle. But hate is never the answer or solution...
@Tyrone Williams - He was a changed man lad, you have to admire a man who's as set in their ways as Combo was but eventually realise that they were wrong they change their ways. If he was a real person I'd personally have a lot of respect for him for changing and becoming a better man. Yes racists are scum but for someone who has never known any different it's admirable if they do consciously change and become a better person if you get what I'm trying to say. That's why this scene is so sad because Combo had changed his life around and become a better man but his past still even then came back to haunt him.

This is only the second time I've been able to watch this as it profoundly affected me the first watch, so many emotions to take in and the sheer terror when combo tries to fight for his life, an amazing piece of work Mr Meddows.

This was the best series I have ever had the privilege to see. Milky made a huge mistake by not meeting up with Combo and realizing that he was a changed person before arranging his takedown. At the end everyone in the group found some sort of inner peace but not Milky. He will be tormented forever by what he did.
Although one has to appreciate and commend a man who changes himself. But victims usually find it hard to find it in themselves. It haunts them. They've been mentally scarred. When mily saw combo, he didn't see a changed man, he saw violent, bigoted, nazi combo.
combo never reached out to milky, was milky who initiated it. all these years milky hasnt had the privilege of seeing combo change, combo should of reached out a long time ago.
Its sort of implied that he was about to meet Milky in TIE 86. He said to Shaun that he was gonna go talk to a few people in town before they parted ways. Whether one of those people was Milky, we cant rly know for sure, since the whole thing with Lol killing her dad happened. Besides, the fact that Combo was willing to jump into a car with Milky (even though Combo clearly understand that hes likely might end up in trouble if he does) shows that he was remorseful/guiltridden enough to talk to Milky even if it would put him in grave danger. In either case, it still doesnt justify planning a hit on someone. Combos assault of Milky was despicable, but he atleast had enough dignity to realise what he had done and drive Milky to the hispital before he died. And he did eventually make a genuine, remorseful apology that clearly had an affect on Milky. He "tried" to make amends. Milky will never get that chance.
I remember when I moved to Germany in 1975 about being surprised about the lack of violence. I'm not saying there was no violence in Germany, but not at the same everyday level. Fights at school, fights at football and fights on the street. I remember the sense of fear I often had. I mean FFS I was only 12. I hope things have changed.

Andrew Shim is really great in this scene. I love how his eyes and body language start to change after Combo gives his apology. He basically goes from displaying hatred to guilt/regret in seconds.

You just know that the pigeon wasn't meant to be there, Graham ad libbed, expecting a cut and retake, and Meadows said it's staying in the edit. It gifted the scene some new found benevolence and playfulness of his reformed/reforming character, before the showdown with Milky where he would be forced to vocalize his regret.
I've never hated but then loved a character more than I have Combo. Stephen Graham deserves to be remembered as one of the greatest actors of his generation bar none.
This is a strong message to those that choose to act without thinking 1st with every negative action there’s always a negative reaction in all aspects of life. Both men played there roles beautifully to get that message across but at the end of the day they both became victims of violence. One was from mindless behavior the other out of revenge

Very few actors in the world can actually pull off where you feel like you're in the room and it's real. Phenomenal acting. I read he was emotionally and psychologically battered after making This is England. That well acted it's heart wrenching.
This blows my mind. Graham is an absolute class act. He deserves so much more recognition for his accomplishments. One of the best actors of the past 2 decades without question.

Really shows that no matter what colour of your skin if you hate someone it's gonna result in nothing but needless violence. Combo and Milky learned that the hard way. Combo learned it when he beat Milky to near death and Milky learned it by having Combo killed by what I'm assuming are organised crime members that his family are connected to
I imagine those guys were neo-nazis that struck a deal with Milky’s relatives because if there’s someone they hated more than non-whites, it’s one of their own who rejected their bigoted ideology.
It's actually worse than that. They're a Neo nazi gang that Combo was once affiliated with. Similar to Britain First shown in the This is England movie. If you leave, you're considered a race traitor and dealt with accordingly if they see you again. Milky and his cousins handed Combo over to them to do with as they please, and it's heavily implied they either threw him off the factory building and/or tortured him to death. That's why Combo is calm then immediately freaks out and begins begging for his life when the van doors open. He knew exactly what was coming as he recognised the two men immediately.
I was always under the impression that these men were in fact Milky uncles, who made a pact when they were sat around his bedside that they would one day torture & kill whoever was responsible? Maybe I'm wrong? 🤷♂️

Milky was smirking in Combos face before he was attacked, went behind Woodies back with Lol. Hid when Lols abusive father came to the door when he was in her house. He then lured Combo to his capture. Milky wasn’t a good character, his happy soft nature was the facade, he is a manipulative two faced character that would smirk and bath in the pain of others.
He also let his rather attractive gf walk home alone just to get pot for Combo, but only after Combo offered him half of it for going to get it.... He was the harbinger of his own Doom... He should have walked his tidy gf home... But his greedy nature is what cost him..
I think the fact that Stephen Graham is mixed race added an extra dimension to his performance. He understands real prejudice. Stunning film and performances.
I love this series, and this scene in particular has me very conflicted. I was attacked in 2000, when I was 19, by six guys, bottle smashed over my head, ended up in hospital with broken ribs and struggling to breathe after being beaten. I knew the guy behind it - it happened as the guy was bullying / threatening the family of my at the time girlfriend. I stood up to him when he was on his own, and the coward jumped me later that night with his cousin and friends. For years, I would say over a decade, I thought about what I would do to him if I saw him on his own again. Several times I thought about waiting for him somewhere and finishing it. And I really was close to doing it. Eventually my anger died down, and now I just feel sorry for the guy. For how pathetic he was and still is. If I saw him today I would very calmly ask him to have a drink exactly as Milky did to Combo here, and tell him what I have just written, how lucky he is to still be walking around, to know what I might have done. But then wish him well and hope he's not the same man now as boy of 18 he was then.
Cheers for sharing this story mate, its stuff like this that reminds me there's good people in the world and not everyone is like he was. Ultimately it may hurt us a lot, but its the perpetrators who really lose with the psychological problems that lead them to cause suffering to others, and we just crossed their paths at the wrong time. They may not deserve remorse, but you'll be many times happier and more honourable for giving it.

as an american i im a fan of the this is england series. even loved the 2006 movie. damn this seen was so sad and hearing the music when combo was in the car even bought a tear to my eye because you knew the man was full of guilt and sorrow for his past and wanted to make things right with milky...but this scene also has a lesson and that is simple......YOU MAY BE DONE WITH THE PAST...BUT THE PAST AINT DONE WITH YOU.

It's crazy how imposing angry skin head Combo was in the movie verses here. If Milky was still fucked up about what happened he definitely coulda just boxed it out and kept it moving. As bad as what Combo did to Milky was, Milky getting Lol pregnant and not even have the decency to warn his mans is also pretty fuckin shitty. But Woody forgave him and truly forgave him to the point of like still kickin it with him. Rather than seeing past it as Woody suggested Combo chose revenge. In the moment when combo sincerely apologizes the weight of guilt seems to immediately transfer from Combo on to Milky. At the wedding reception its apparent that Milky is doomed to live in misery for what he allowed. Forgiveness is the only way to get that feeling off of you.

This scene brings me shivers. So good. Milky wasnt really expecting a sincere apology, you can see the regret almost build knowing whats going to happen. Then as his family arrives he nearly feels betrayed by milky but once he realises it wasnt just him he caused pain to, but his whole family, he quicly accepts the situation. It wasnt just him he caused this pain too, and quicly accepts what will happen.
I struggle getting through any scene of TIE, but Combo's face when Milky reminds him he ''wasn't a man'' takes it to a whole other level of heartbreak.
This scene still haunts me. And the way Combo accepts his fate up until he's taken to the abandoned warehouse and recognizes the hitmen. I actually felt sorry for Combo here.

I personally wouldnt want that on my conscience though. What combo did to younger Milky was horrible. I remember being young at the time and I went to the cinemas on Broad street,brum, to watch the original film. UGC cinema at the time. Anyway when it got the bit where combo was beating milky I couldnt even sit through it. I told the girl I was with lets go. Thats how much it fcked with me. Simply the best series ever shown on British TV Emotion, realism, humour, pain and every character in it you can relate to. Growing up in England in the 80’s was just like this. Superb acting from everyone involved backed by a haunting soundtrack from Ludovico Einaudi. Shane Meadows you are a genius Please consider gathering all of these great actors together again for one last time……
Remember watching this when it was first shown, if you werent moved by this you aint human. Milky was should a great guy man. It really shown the racial prejudice black person suffered in the 80s. (I know this is meant to be 1990). Stephen Graham is one of the most underated actors today.
There is virtually no difference between Combo and Milky. They are both suffering beings, imprisoned in a brutal reality of misery and sorrow, anger and revenge, unable to escape the spiral of violence and pain because of their ignorant, wild, weak mind. So they conduct their miserable existences trapped in this doom of violence, pain and remorse, being one the aethernal victim of the other.
Thats a good sentiment. I would howeever argue that Combo did "escape" his miserable existence. He did drive milky to the hospital instead of escaping the scene of the crime. He also atoned for his past by helping to tutor prisoners in jail and by working with kids/teenagers when he got out of jail. He also agreed to enter Milkys car (even though it was clear that he could get hurt/killed if he did) because he felt like he owed it to him. If anything Combo seems like a better person than Milky. I do feel bad for Milky to though. Having his caucasian friends pressuring him to "forgive" the ex-nazi who almost killed him 7 years earlier, has to be extremly infuriating. Not to mention that the whole revenge plot seems to have been pushed upon him by his family. But in the end of the day hes bever gonna be able to forgive himself for his part of Combos murder. Combo could atleast "hope" for forgiveness thru atonement (even if he couldnt forgive himself). Poor Milky will never get that chance.
Yes, I agree on the last point. The fact is Milky is weak. He is too weak to defend himself from Combo's aggression 7 years earlier (yeah, he was only a boy then), he then is too weak to resist loving Lol, and he is finally too weak to forgive Combo. And too weak to even taking active part in his killing. Too weak to stand up in that damn restaurant and say to those people, in what would have been an act of heroism 'stop, it's enough, he apologized, he is changed and I want to forgive him' - I was hoping from the bottom of my heart for that to happen, but I was sure it would have never happened. Because Milky is weak, and the only thing he can do is to cry, never stand up, not even try, depicting in his mind an image of himself as the poor victim. He's basically the opposite of Combo, strong, active, impetuous, able to change from a nazi and a rapist to a mature man, learning from his own mistakes... but was finally caught in the spiral of violence he started years earlier. Karma is karma :)

Milky wanted Combo to show one ounce of his old self so he could not feel any regret of what was gonna happen to him but what happened was not what Milky intended. You could see the instant regret on Milky's face when Combo said "I forgive you. I just hope that one day you'll forgive me."
Stephen Graeme is the Uk version of Steve BUshemi , quietly working away and making a difference in everything he is in turning in stellar performances time and again without being labelled an A list star (think Tom Cruice etc ) but delivering his craft far and away better than 99 % of so called "A listers . What an excellent actor -truly .
This scene and all of This Is England just blows my mind. SO good, so unafraid to show the grey areas that exist in all of these situations. Not afraid of and actively interested in showing the complexity of working class lives. It reminds me that of William Trevor you n the scope of it’s compassion.
This scene makes you feel like you are falling into despair with Milky and Combo. Emphasised by the piano's triplet minor riff building to a crescendo throughout.

Yeah, he's a genius. I love how he balances the light hearted scenes with the really intense ones which tend to catch me off guard lol

Stephen Graham is criminally underrated as an actor.....some of his smaller screen stuff is incredible. I grew up in the 70's and 80's and encountered a few Combo's on the estate I was living on...This is England trajects all my feelings to those times. It's horrible yet appreciative.

Every so often I find myself returning to watch this scene. It's always heartbreaking. Almost unbearable to watch. I grew up in the mid to late 80s and I still remember that age of massive confusion, uncertainty, anger and fear - over race and 'identity'. I knew and saw many Combos. And almost all of them had that same sad story. And yes, at times, I had the experience, along with many others, to feel like Milky. It really is a vicious circle. But hate is never the answer or solution...
@Tyrone Williams - He was a changed man lad, you have to admire a man who's as set in their ways as Combo was but eventually realise that they were wrong they change their ways. If he was a real person I'd personally have a lot of respect for him for changing and becoming a better man. Yes racists are scum but for someone who has never known any different it's admirable if they do consciously change and become a better person if you get what I'm trying to say. That's why this scene is so sad because Combo had changed his life around and become a better man but his past still even then came back to haunt him.

This is only the second time I've been able to watch this as it profoundly affected me the first watch, so many emotions to take in and the sheer terror when combo tries to fight for his life, an amazing piece of work Mr Meddows.

This was the best series I have ever had the privilege to see. Milky made a huge mistake by not meeting up with Combo and realizing that he was a changed person before arranging his takedown. At the end everyone in the group found some sort of inner peace but not Milky. He will be tormented forever by what he did.

Its sort of implied that he was about to meet Milky in TIE 86. He said to Shaun that he was gonna go talk to a few people in town before they parted ways. Whether one of those people was Milky, we cant rly know for sure, since the whole thing with Lol killing her dad happened. Besides, the fact that Combo was willing to jump into a car with Milky (even though Combo clearly understand that hes likely might end up in trouble if he does) shows that he was remorseful/guiltridden enough to talk to Milky even if it would put him in grave danger.
In either case, it still doesnt justify planning a hit on someone. Combos assault of Milky was despicable, but he atleast had enough dignity to realise what he had done and drive Milky to the hispital before he died. And he did eventually make a genuine, remorseful apology that clearly had an affect on Milky. He "tried" to make amends. Milky will never get that chance.

I remember when I moved to Germany in 1975 about being surprised about the lack of violence. I'm not saying there was no violence in Germany, but not at the same everyday level. Fights at school, fights at football and fights on the street. I remember the sense of fear I often had. I mean FFS I was only 12.

Andrew Shim is really great in this scene. I love how his eyes and body language start to change after Combo gives his apology. He basically goes from displaying hatred to guilt/regret in seconds.

You just know that the pigeon wasn't meant to be there, Graham ad libbed, expecting a cut and retake, and Meadows said it's staying in the edit. It gifted the scene some new found benevolence and playfulness of his reformed/reforming character, before the showdown with Milky where he would be forced to vocalize his regret.

I've never hated but then loved a character more than I have Combo. Stephen Graham deserves to be remembered as one of the greatest actors of his generation bar none.
This is a strong message to those that choose to act without thinking 1st with every negative action there’s always a negative reaction in all aspects of life.
Both men played there roles beautifully to get that message across but at the end of the day they both became victims of violence. One was from mindless behavior the other out of revenge

Very few actors in the world can actually pull off where you feel like you're in the room and it's real. Phenomenal acting. I read he was emotionally and psychologically battered after making This is England. That well acted it's heart wrenching.
This blows my mind. Graham is an absolute class act. He deserves so much more recognition for his accomplishments. One of the best actors of the past 2 decades without question.

It's actually worse than that. They're a Neo nazi gang that Combo was once affiliated with. Similar to Britain First shown in the This is England movie. If you leave, you're considered a race traitor and dealt with accordingly if they see you again. Milky and his cousins handed Combo over to them to do with as they please, and it's heavily implied they either threw him off the factory building and/or tortured him to death. That's why Combo is calm then immediately freaks out and begins begging for his life when the van doors open. He knew exactly what was coming as he recognised the two men immediately.
I was always under the impression that these men were in fact Milky uncles, who made a pact when they were sat around his bedside that they would one day torture & kill whoever was responsible?

Milky was smirking in Combos face before he was attacked, went behind Woodies back with Lol. Hid when Lols abusive father came to the door when he was in her house. He then lured Combo to his capture. Milky wasn’t a good character, his happy soft nature was the facade, he is a manipulative two faced character that would smirk and bath in the pain of others.
He also let his rather attractive gf walk home alone just to get pot for Combo, but only after Combo offered him half of it for going to get it.... He was the harbinger of his own Doom... He should have walked his tidy gf home... But his greedy nature is what cost him..

I love this series, and this scene in particular has me very conflicted. I was attacked in 2000, when I was 19, by six guys, bottle smashed over my head, ended up in hospital with broken ribs and struggling to breathe after being beaten. I knew the guy behind it - it happened as the guy was bullying / threatening the family of my at the time girlfriend. I stood up to him when he was on his own, and the coward jumped me later that night with his cousin and friends.
For years, I would say over a decade, I thought about what I would do to him if I saw him on his own again. Several times I thought about waiting for him somewhere and finishing it. And I really was close to doing it.
Eventually my anger died down, and now I just feel sorry for the guy. For how pathetic he was and still is. If I saw him today I would very calmly ask him to have a drink exactly as Milky did to Combo here, and tell him what I have just written, how lucky he is to still be walking around, to know what I might have done. But then wish him well and hope he's not the same man now as boy of 18 he was then.
Cheers for sharing this story mate, its stuff like this that reminds me there's good people in the world and not everyone is like he was. Ultimately it may hurt us a lot, but its the perpetrators who really lose with the psychological problems that lead them to cause suffering to others, and we just crossed their paths at the wrong time. They may not deserve remorse, but you'll be many times happier and more honourable for giving it.

as an american i im a fan of the this is england series. even loved the 2006 movie. damn this seen was so sad and hearing the music when combo was in the car even bought a tear to my eye because you knew the man was full of guilt and sorrow for his past and wanted to make things right with milky...but this scene also has a lesson and that is simple......YOU MAY BE DONE WITH THE PAST...BUT THE PAST AINT DONE WITH YOU.
Moral of the story - You can never truly erase your past and some way or another, your past will always catch up with you.

It's crazy how imposing angry skin head Combo was in the movie verses here. If Milky was still fucked up about what happened he definitely coulda just boxed it out and kept it moving. As bad as what Combo did to Milky was, Milky getting Lol pregnant and not even have the decency to warn his mans is also pretty fuckin shitty. But Woody forgave him and truly forgave him to the point of like still kickin it with him. Rather than seeing past it as Woody suggested Combo chose revenge. In the moment when combo sincerely apologizes the weight of guilt seems to immediately transfer from Combo on to Milky. At the wedding reception its apparent that Milky is doomed to live in misery for what he allowed. Forgiveness is the only way to get that feeling off of you.

This scene brings me shivers. So good. Milky wasnt really expecting a sincere apology, you can see the regret almost build knowing whats going to happen.
Then as his family arrives he nearly feels betrayed by milky but once he realises it wasnt just him he caused pain to, but his whole family, he quicly accepts the situation. It wasnt just him he caused this pain too, and quicly accepts what will happen.
I struggle getting through any scene of TIE, but Combo's face when Milky reminds him he ''wasn't a man'' takes it to a whole other level of heartbreak.

I personally wouldnt want that on my conscience though. What combo did to younger Milky was horrible. I remember being young at the time and I went to the cinemas on Broad street,brum, to watch the original film. UGC cinema at the time. Anyway when it got the bit where combo was beating milky I couldnt even sit through it. I told the girl I was with lets go. Thats how much it fcked with me.

It really shown the racial prejudice black person suffered in the 80s. (I know this is meant to be 1990). Stephen Graham is one of the most underated actors today.
There is virtually no difference between Combo and Milky. They are both suffering beings, imprisoned in a brutal reality of misery and sorrow, anger and revenge, unable to escape the spiral of violence and pain because of their ignorant, wild, weak mind. So they conduct their miserable existences trapped in this doom of violence, pain and remorse, being one the aethernal victim of the other.
Thats a good sentiment. I would howeever argue that Combo did "escape" his miserable existence. He did drive milky to the hospital instead of escaping the scene of the crime. He also atoned for his past by helping to tutor prisoners in jail and by working with kids/teenagers when he got out of jail. He also agreed to enter Milkys car (even though it was clear that he could get hurt/killed if he did) because he felt like he owed it to him.
If anything Combo seems like a better person than Milky.
I do feel bad for Milky to though. Having his caucasian friends pressuring him to "forgive" the ex-nazi who almost killed him 7 years earlier, has to be extremly infuriating. Not to mention that the whole revenge plot seems to have been pushed upon him by his family. But in the end of the day hes bever gonna be able to forgive himself for his part of Combos murder. Combo could atleast "hope" for forgiveness thru atonement (even if he couldnt forgive himself). Poor Milky will never get that chance.
Yes, I agree on the last point. The fact is Milky is weak. He is too weak to defend himself from Combo's aggression 7 years earlier (yeah, he was only a boy then), he then is too weak to resist loving Lol, and he is finally too weak to forgive Combo. And too weak to even taking active part in his killing. Too weak to stand up in that damn restaurant and say to those people, in what would have been an act of heroism 'stop, it's enough, he apologized, he is changed and I want to forgive him' - I was hoping from the bottom of my heart for that to happen, but I was sure it would have never happened. Because Milky is weak, and the only thing he can do is to cry, never stand up, not even try, depicting in his mind an image of himself as the poor victim. He's basically the opposite of Combo, strong, active, impetuous, able to change from a nazi and a rapist to a mature man, learning from his own mistakes... but was finally caught in the spiral of violence he started years earlier. Karma is karma :)

Stephen Graeme is the Uk version of Steve BUshemi , quietly working away and making a difference in everything he is in turning in stellar performances time and again without being labelled an A list star (think Tom Cruice etc ) but delivering his craft far and away better than 99 % of so called "A listers . Two unbelievable actors... a truly heart-wrenching scene
This scene makes you feel like you are falling into despair with Milky and Combo. Emphasised by the piano's triplet minor riff building to a crescendo throughout.

You go from haring combo from the movie to slightly feeling sorry for him in the series, Stephen Graham played Combo beautifully and it was written perfectly by Shane Meadows
