From my understanding some of these companies can be extremely successful, in fact I think one of the biggest scam companies was recently sold to Apple for like $4 billion or something, think it was called Beats or something.

That's pretty typical of the cheap 'n' chunky ebay projectors. Their main redeeming feature is that they use a fairly common metal halide lamp that lasts thousands of hours and is very cheap to replace.
bigclivedotcom the MH lamp is a pretty nice selling point, albeit giving pretty bad colour reproduction. Projector lamps are stupidly expensive the amount of time they can be turned on. It's really about time that projectors started using something decent that doesn't shit itself within a month of use.

You should take a look at the Reef Central forum. A lot of people wnt to switch their MH lamps over to led, and nearly everyone has issues with the color of their tank afterwards; this is not unique to aquaria. The visual spectrum of leds is weird due to the fluorescent phosphor.

They have been making their intro into the filming industry, and a simple film panel, used to bring light into a studio, currently costs around 1000-2000$ depending on light output. Although I do think you're right that LEDs will make their entrance into projectors at some point, due to their superior lifespan and light output, I also believe that current leds have pretty bad CRI. Leds with high-CRI that are currently on the market cost an absolute fortune. If you can find cheap, high-power, high-lumen, long-lifespan, CRI 95% leds, please let us know!! Because I've honestly been looking for some nice film lamps since forever.
What kind of dumpster do you people have?! You find oscilloscopes, video projectors, surround sound systems, jet aircraft, nuclear power stations. All I see at local dumpsters are old tires, scrap cardboard boxes and similar crap.
It's all down there bellow that top crap, you should dig deeper.
You have to break a few property and trespassing laws and jump fences for the good stuff; if you're sticking to easily accessible dumpsters that any hobo can get into, then you're just going to get the literal trash that other divers left behind.
My brother in law used to work for city sanitation years ago and he was able to run a modest computer and electronics repair shop out of his home from the locked up dumpsters behind rent to own and electronic appliance stores - he was able to salvage plenty of useable parts and components from devices that often only had cosmetic damage or minor mechanical issues - disc drawers not working and bad power cables being the two most common culprits.
Point is, if you want the good stuff, you have to be willing to risk going where most others aren't willing to go.

I love my Marc Vincent, I mean once you get past the occasional high voltage shock due to the excessive electrical shorts and the electrical burn smell,. I mean as long you keep a fire extinguisher on hand, it's really quite a quality item.

I worked at a used music gear store . We had a very similar box come in, it wasn't this same name tho. But looked identical...and did sound like shit!!!!... we did sell it for cheap tho..

@@Dargonhuman Funny enough, the Marc vincent, zm, "product designer" was not as apt in the English language. Not only is "vincent" spelled with a capital "V" at the bttom and a lower case "v" on top. It also produly declares itself as an "AMPLFIER". Now that's some serious shit...I mean, it probably ranks #1 in the "AMPLFIER" tests of any serious high end audio magazine. Because stuff like Krell sits in the amplifier section. well, because, you know, the guys at Krell can not only build amplifiers, they can also spell...and they don't need to put the word amplifier (or AMPLFIER) on the front.
I chose Krell just as an prominent example, there are other great amplifiers out there.
Oh, yes, and you'll probably never find a Krell amplifier in a White Van Sale; it'll likely cost more than the van.

Clothing lines are another product where high-end sounding labels are sewn on cheap garments. And its all completely legal. It's called Capitalism.

I just got fucken scammed today. He said the same bs. They received an extra shipment of speakers with surround sound and a high tech projector. MSRP for the speakers were $2999 an the projector was $5999. I fell for it and gave the guy $300. I should've gotten with my gut decision but ended up persuaded. I tossed it in the trash. Lesson learned.

I got scammed in 1988 buying Acoustic Monitor speakers , 4 for $88 and they are still working and sounding good today!
Those are recycled capacitors, you can see from the assorted glue colours.
Transformer core is a 35VA one, not going to work well at all if you want more than 30VA out of it. Plus is the copper is worth something.

Most of chineese products have tons of mistakes in the instructions, some of them are google-translated. They even make a mistakes on the their brand name as a video shows. Nothing special. I have seen a lot of this.
They got my mother in a parking lot and talked her into buying two pairs of "high end" speakers that were "over-purchased" a few years back. I tracked them down within a couple of hors tailed them to their warehouse and I actually got her money back! I suppose it helped that I knew the owner of the building they were using as a warehouse/staging area.
I called that one a WIN. Even if it cost some time and gas, it was SATISFYING. Truly satisfying. . . yep

The "Marc vincent" [sic] home theater system was sold here in the USA under the "Vanderbach" name, in the same cabinet but without the fake tubes/valves. Printed on the box is a fake MSRP of "$2699", and on one I've seen a hand-written price tag of $219.99. People are trying to sell them for over $1000 on eBay, probably thinking that "even that price is a great deal compared to the $2699 it's worth!". The box claims "Designed in USA", "No.1 in Germany", and "No.2 in Sweden".
For the most part, these speakers end up selling on Ebay for extremely low prices. Or quite often attract no bids at all.

Friend cheaped out and bought a crappy projector on amazon. He came home one day and saw his wall one fire.
I have been approached on two different occasions over the years from people trying to do this scam. Back then I drove a flashy sports car so it looked like I had a lot of money, I didn't really though since it all was invested in that damn car lol. Anyway it went down pretty much as you describe in this video. "Hey we have a bunch of left over high end gear from this installation job we did and the boss accidentally ordered to much stuff and now we have to get rid of it." The first time it happened I was pretty shocked as I was at a gas station fueling up said sports car. After I turned the guy down he got rather agitated and started to insult me calling me a "flea" for not wanting his obviously shit product. I saw him look over my shoulder at a police car pulling into the station and he promptly ended the conversation and jumped in his van and took off.
The second time it happened a guy approached me in a parking lot offering pretty much the same deal except he mentioned where they did the install and was at a place where I used to work and I still knew the boss. I told him I was going to call my old boss to verify if his claims were true or not and he jumped in his vehicle and sped off without saying a word.
Your name is very similar to Marc Vincent amp in this very video. I find it intriguing. :)

I did a tear-down on a large LCD TV of similar build quality some time ago, I honestly thought somebody had hacked one together in their back yard out of scraps, but nope it was a factory built!
At least the projector was not a total POS probably good for kids parties, random presentations and other work that you would not haul an expensive high end projector out for!

There is a difference between the components not being able to even possibly match up to what they claimed and having an individual, hand assembled, product not look exactly like the picture. Especially when, every now and then, somebody cares enough to actually produce and hand you the good looking sandwich.
If it makes these claims on the box, or at an official website that is still in use, it seems like it would be easy to make the case that they are committing fraud.
I bought speakers from a shady dude in a white van who said they couldnt find the address they were supposed to deliver them to for $300. 25 years ago. Still have 'em and they're awesome!

I know what great sound....sounds like and I am going to double down on what I said: My white van speakers that live in my 1K sq ft man cave, still sound great to this day and they are now over 30 years old. I had a few guys try this on my twice about 10 years ago. First time was at a Home Depot store in the US, the brand they were hocking was Olin Ross. I hadn't heard of the scam before and almost fell for it, even offered them $100 before a friend alerted me to what was going on. They surprisingly wouldn't accept my "low" offer anyway, despite it being a heck of a lot more than the $20 they sell for on eBay.
Second time was Paramax brand, and I wasn't so nice to the douchebag when he approached me a few months after the first attempt in the Burger King parking lot across the street from the Home Depot. I chased him off, but it almost came to blows when I called him out for his shittiness. The BK manager saw the whole thing unfold, and actually comped my meal for chasing the guy away, so it actually worked out in my favor.

I've had these guys approach me once off the street, it sounded suspicious from the get go... their excuse was they installed a home theatre system in a house and the shipping company sent them "2 by accident" and they need to get rid of it...... typical 2 guys in a white van. shady as, common sense really.

Here in Canada people don't put this staff in the dumpster. They either sell it at the garage sale for a buck or two or leave it on the curbside so someone less fortunate or just adventurous can take it home and make some use of it.
I knew someone that fell for the van scam speakers back in college and thought he was hot sh*t for a couple hours until they blew up. I had to be the one to let him know he got scammed and since I didn't like him at all (he was a major douche bag), I laughed my ass off right in his face. Probably one the best days I had that year. :)

I fell for this 25 years ago. Funny thing is, I am still using those $150 speakers on a daily basis. Not too bad of a buy :) to this day, I still feel dumb, but it could have been worse.
My stepfather here in the US fell victim to this about a quarter of a century ago when he was duped into buying this massive pair of "Acoustic Research" speakers. Big, twelve inch poly woofers and the like, they looked ok. But, when I pulled one of them out there was no crossover, the magnet was tiny and you could see that the MDF was only about a cm thick. Junk.
Ribbon cables and smaller gauge speaker lines are quite common for chassis wiring.
That sub driver is not that bad at all either. Paper still has very good parameters in the world of driver design. Stabbing it means nothing. The driver could use a larger magnet but the voice coil is not all that bad for the power.

In the United Kingdom I would get arrested for theft if I take any items out of a "dumpster" without first seeking permission from the owner of the dumpster. Are the laws similar in Australia? I learnt the law when i was 17. I took a tv stand from a skip behind a shop. The police saw me later and asked where i got it from. I innocently said the skip. This resulted in a visit to magistrates court and a fine of £50. Back in 1984 that was nearly two weeks wages.

At the end of this video, he said he had to actually get into the dumpster to fish the remote. He jumped in dumpsters a few times in past dives but most of the time, he does mostly pick up stuff that is just lying around.

I'll 'defend' the projector: "HDTV Ready" was plastered all over consumer devices that were capable of accepting 1080p signal, even if incapable of properly displaying it. That's why I flatly refused to buy any digital TV until I established the true resolution of the display panel.

because you to look at the spec sheet to tell. cheap tv's have no hdmi 2.0 which can handle 4k at 60hz
Treknology I think HDTV ready means that they can display 720p. It was very common in the early 2000's. A lot of the early HD TV's were made with 1366×768 LCDs.
Before BluRay and such, when DVD was the best most people had, it was plenty.

Within the Video industry, I pedantically separate "UHD" and "True-4k" as different products and yes, in high-end video production gear this IS a significant difference. The display I'm using right now is "True-2k" (2048) rather than the ordinary "full" HD (1920). On one of the cameras I'm currently considering, even the "eyepiece" is genuinely 1920*1080...
I should also point out that no video material is going to be 60Hz. At best it will be 30fps, and will only be displayed by a PC at a higher refresh rate. A properly mastered Blu-ray should be 24Hz (24 fps) equal to cinema and the TV will "refresh" this image by displaying it twice, to reduce flicker. In a standard cinema, each of the 24 frames per second is shown twice to reduce flicker (48Hz). The idea of 50 & 60Hz is, I think, a hang-over from the analog interlace days. If HD were being properly broadcast and displayed, then all TVs should be capable of displaying 96Hz (each frame shown four times). We need varying frequencies to remain backward compatible with PAL (25/50) and NTSC (30/60).

+Treknology The only way to tell ofa camera's resolution for sure is to shoot a scene with a lot of high frequency content then take a frame and do a 2D Discrete Fourier Transform on the picture. If it's full resolution the center blob will extend fully to the frame edges including overscan.
The projector looks like they reverse engineered a decent older design, from a decent basic company, and then built it using cheaper components.
The caps on the Marc Vincent, could be genuine. A lot of old electronics goes to China for recycling, and I wouldn't be surprised to see decent pieces like capacitors, resistors and the such being reused, in cheap gear.
On your second point, that was my thinking as well. The printing on the bigger electrolytics (and the vent at least on the Elnas) seems right, relative to typical fakes (though there might be a few, ahem, 'Rulycons' in the back there).
That projector is not too bad. It seems like it's a little old as electronics that uses a HD ready just means that they were able to accept an HD signal. There were HD ready products sold there were only enhance definition or not full 1080p. Remember, 720 is still HD. It's just not full hd.

If they're lying about the quality of the product, that falls under the file of false advertising, which IS illegal and is grounds for prosecution.

Tracking the guy down would be much more expensive than the money you paid for the product and in the end you catch just one of the lowest level workers that may even be misinformed. Someone tried to run this scam on me in about 1986 in Princeton NJ, USA. It was almost exactly as described in the video: white van, driver says they delivered a pair of speakers to someone. The warehouse gave them two boxes but the box actually contains a pair. Fortunately, even my 22-year-old self smelled a rat and didn't bite. My point is that this exact scam has been running world-wide for decades.

That lamp in there looks like a standard 70w RX7 metal halide lamp as used in commercial floodlights! They are about 5600 lumens and only have 60-70% colour rendering!

BillyJoe1305 if you still had it, take a look at it, most of the time they just had a 12v halogen bulb inside. Ironically, halogen bulbs have a near-100% CRI. On small projectors, you can get away with using halogen. Larger projectors would need higher light-output, that'd burn the film lol.
I bought a set of 5.1 Theater Acoustics speakers that I rocked for well over 25 years. From a guy in a van. I think I paid $75. I would say they took some serious abuse and by the time I retired them to upgrade to a set of Mirages, they still sounded fairly decent. The only repair I had to do was replace the 10" sub cone about 10 years ago. Blew the voice coil. Replaced it with a car audio dual voice. Needed one w/ dual coils due to car audio being 4ohms per coil and home audio is 8ohms. Just wired them in series to get 8 ohms of resistance. Worked great.
Hmm. Just a nitpick, I think you meant "lux", not "lumens" at 26:30 or so. 200-400 lux is a typical brightness for an office space.
For anyone who doesnt know: lux (lx) is a measure of radiance per unit area while lumens are a measure of total radiance output by a specific device. They're the visual sensitivity weighted counterparts to W/m^2 and just plain watts.

The lens is named after a guy that pronounced his name as you suggest, but if you look of the pronunciation of the name of the lens in a dictionary, it can include the sound of the "S". If you look up the name of the inventor, the "S" is silent. I guess enough people mispronounced the name of the lens that it became an accepted pronunciation.
You can say it any way. I've worked in a theatre where a lot of the lighting has fresnel lenses and the lighting techs there say it either way. It's just preference.
USWaterRockets happend all the time with foreign names. For example in spanish the H is silent. And in english the h sound as if where a J in spanish.
Those components are likely genuine but just recycled. Overall it's not as bad as you're making out. The same quality would be sold under known brand names in normal retail outlets. The only scam is that these guys in the van are overinflating the prices to stupid figures.

You are knocking the transformer, but have you seen the transformer in most newer Sony, or Pioneer amplifiers... absolute crap. At least that is a torroid.... and the subwoofer actually had a magnet that looks like it should have some throw. By no means am I saying it's good, but for $50-$100 max... it's not a horrible deal.

That 3D Optics projector is as "high definition" as the Sega Genesis was at it's "high definition graphics". LOL.

It did have more horizontal pixels than the NES and SNES though, and was capable of RGB out of the factory. It also had a Yamaha synthesizer chip that allowed it higher quality sound output than the competitors, if not as powerful as later competitors. It's about as "High Definition" as hardware got at that time. The projector is a different story, because high definition is now an industry standard. Now, instead of marketing jargon, it's marketing lies.

That "cover" (dustcap) is almost always bigger than the voice coil itself, especially on subwoofer drivers. For obvious thermal and airflow reasons. Nothing fake about it at all. You don't seem to know much about speaker design.

Some guys got me with this about 25 years ago. What they said is, "The order was supposed to be four speakers and we got 4 pair". The brand name matched a different high brand. Got me for $300.

Same with cheap Pioneer. Bought myself to receivers of that brand. Looked quite similar from the outside. Opened them, one ful of electronics, the cheaper model looked like a 5 dollar alarm-clock radio. Did some google research and learned that die higher Pioneer component of that era had embossed logo's the cheaper units printed logo's. The printed logo series have been, I assume completely overpriced back then. JVC the same, a lot of quality difference between high end and the cheaper sets, like every brand I assume.
A long time ago, someone was trying to sell me some car speakers he claimed were JVC-brand. He had either been scammed, wanted to scam me, or didn't know how to properly read, because when I checked the driver units, the sticker said "JBC". Of course I didn't get them.

I work in an electronics repair shop in Canada.
We see this stuff all the time. The stuff is barely built to work at all. All the specs are false, and in the case of the projectors you're lucky if they don't burn your house down.
You will see that the brand name changed every few years, as different lawyers are trying to chase them down. Their websites claim this are high end items (it's really funny when they say the MSRP on the projectors is over $5000), yet all the links on the page don't go anywhere, there is no support, no warranty and no where to send them to get them repaired (if they even work in the first place).
