Nice one Davie. I have some blue silk. It's not a tying silk, like Pearsall's, but used for sewing. Still I'll give it a go with what I have - ruffed grouse or chukkar partridge, grey dubbing. Soft hackles are awesome, fun to tie, open to countless variations. Winged wets and soft hackles were the first the flies I tied and among the most productive. My biggest brown came on a grouse & orange, hare's ear thorax, in size 12.
Thanks for all the traditional and modern tutorials Davie! ATB.

I love soft hackle wet flies and dry flies. Forgotten flies now the nymphing has taken over and all of a sudden every one is saying these flies don't catch trout anymore. Rubbish they catch as much as they ever did. By the way you are an amazing fly tyer

Still going strong Davie, been watching these videos since I was a kid getting into fly tying and fly fishing, probably 10 or 11 years ago. Keep it up!

Hi Davie, nice demonstration of a fly pattern that really works for me. I noticed the fly box you were using, I have bought the silicone inserts and putting them in my old fly box’s that had sponge slits. I have found that the new silicone ones hold on to the flies much better and last longer too. Thanks for another good one!

Simple and effective - Soft Hackles are my go-to unless I am specifically matching a hatch. Thanks for sharing Davie! ATB! Hank

Mr. McPhail, you sir are my favorite fly tyer, and I am so glad that I have subscribed to your videos. I really enjoy learning from you, and right now, I'm beginning to get into wet fly fishing, and the first wet fly I caught a fish on is your Black Pennell. Thank you very much for your tying lessons.

Enjoyed it for the third time now, Davie... =]
I know some people are happier you're using hackle pliers... so they can see. Still, wrapping hackle by hand is one of the great things I've learned from you. I've got to go back in time with your videos to see it any more.

Absolutely perfect. I wish I could figure out how to get all the hackle fibers curved toward the rear of the fly.

The undulating soft hackles and succulent spare body and colour, enough to drive a trout mad.

    Hi Davie:
Is the reference to a few turns of Silk being equivalent to many more turns of synthetic thread based on thicker diameter of Silk?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  3 роки тому +1

      Morning Enzo Banda,
Yes it is silk as it's far thicker so you will need less turns to get the same grip you would get with the new synthetic threads or get away with.. I've never counted the difference but two turns of silk is probably about 6 or more of the synthetic threads..
      All the very best Davie...

Great little pattern mate. I’ve just tying some up on size 16and 20 . Do you think I ‘m going to small when I use size 20? Thank you for sharing with us again my friend. Best Regards, Ken

There's a video somewhere that Davie shows how he prepares his tying wax. He uses wax from Veniard.

I prefer to tie in the feather, then dub a thorax, and finally wrap the feather over the thorax. Even better if you tear one side of the feather off before wrapping.
