  • Vocal: Homayoun Shajarian
    Poem: Simin Behbahani
Based on a clip by Baran Kosari
    Director: Ramin Madarshahian
Filmed in University of South Carolina
    Translation to English:
    why did you leave?
why did you leave? why i'm restless?
(why) i have fiction of your embrace?
you didn't say how beautiful moonlight is tonight
you didn't see my soul is intolerant from sorrow
why did you leave? why i'm restless?
(why) i have fiction of your embrace
however your illusion was my friend all the time
however your hope was in my thoughts
come and give me another wine*
from glass of truth give me another goblet
why did you leave? why i'm restless?
(why) i have fiction of your embrace
why did you leave? why i'm restless?
(why) i have fiction of your embrace
you didn't say how beautiful moonlight is tonight
you didn't see my soul is intolerant from sorrow
why did you leave? why i'm restless?
(why) i have fiction of your embrace
    make my crazy heart crazier
    make me forget both worlds*
come and give me another wine
from glass of truth give me another goblet
why did you leave? why i'm restless?
(why) i have fiction of your embrace

Hi Samy. I normally don't reply to the comments on youtube but your comments kinda of hit the right thing. So I felt I'd explain. First, the poem is written by a prominent contemporary Persian female poet (Simin Behbahani). She was one of the pillars of contemporary poetry in Iran. Second, the song is sang by a young brilliant singer (Homayoun Shajarian). He is son of the great master of Persian classical music (Mohammadreza Shajarian) so you get the genetic factor here :) Just to tell you that this combination is quite something by itself. And lastly, the poem is a masterpiece describing the sorrow of a lover leaving the other one. I found a literal translation here: lyricstranslate.com/en/چرا-رفتی-؟-why-did-you-leave.html

    Why did you leave? Why?
    I am restless
Yet, I so want to hold you (in my arms)
You didn’t say how beautiful the moonlight's tonight
(The original poem by poetess Simin Behbahani begs the question: "Why weren’t you there to say how beautiful the moonlight’s tonight?")
You didn’t see my sorrow, my heartache
(The original poem by poetess Simin Behbahani begs the question: "Why weren't you there to see my perpetuate cycles of misery?")
    Why did you leave? Why?
    I am restless
Yet, I so want to hold you (in my arms)
    You're always on my mind
In hopes of being with you someday
Give me a different sort of wine tonight
The kind from the chalice of truth
    Why did you leave? Why?
    I am restless
Yet, I so want to hold you (in my arms)
    Intoxicate this broken heart
And make it oblivious of both worlds

Why did you leave, why am I restless?
In my mind, I dream of embracing you.
You didn't say how beautiful the moonlight has been tonight, you didn't see how impatient my soul has been with grief.
Why did you leave, why am I restless?
In my mind, I dream of embracing you.
Although my memory of you has been a lifelong companion to me, and although my hope has just turned into my imagination, come and give me a different wine, in a goblet glazed with truth.

My whole life I've been utterly mesmerized by how music unites people across race, gender, nationality and geography. In that sense, it would be safe to say that music is indeed a common language shared by us all. I wish politicians had the least bit of interest in appreciating such facts in which case our world would probably have been strikingly different than what we actually see.

for understanding of iranian music you must know the word, what they singing, otherwise you won't feel it!
that's the rule, because for iranian most important thing in a song is a poem that they can connect to music!!(those music is just for listening not for dance or disco or...!!!!)
but if you feel it,it gone shoot you yo the moon without drug or rocket!!😋😋😋😎

I couldn't disagree with u more buddy! If your personal viewpoint were actually true, why would anyone ever want to go through the painstaking trouble of composing music for the lyrics, in the first place? Put another way, it is an incontrovertible fact, I assume, that music is in itself an art in its own right. Plus, I think I wouldn't be insane if I were to say that music is itself a universal language.

This is for all the Iranians/Persians and all other people listenning to these songs. Persian/Parsi in in poetry is a contextual language. Words alone and in combination do not mean anything unless the listener is aware of the significance of the background . The root of it all is in our culture and in our history. It is a futile effort to try and translate into English or any other language as it just becomes a dry and soulless train of words. The best way for those who are not native Parsi speakers is to just listen and apply the nuances of the music to their own feellings and experiences. BTW for that idiot Turk who said Persian is not a language I suggest that he should try and find the root of his own language in Mongolian, Arabic and Persian languages. He or she might learn a thing or two.

@@Alberzenci You are as stupid as yor comment. When we write in English, Persian/Parsi/Iranian refers to the people who live in the country that is now known as Iran and those that border it or speak the Persian/Parsi language such as Afganistan, Tajikistan, Parts of Ozbakistan, Turkey, Northern India and so on. It does not mean that a particular race has been ' forced ' upon others. You, if you are Iranian , are part of this nation . Iranic people are of the same root, culture, history and mother language. Before commenting do a bit of studying. It is good for you.
