Carver Fretless Mountain Banjo Kit (and Mole in the Ground) 6.23.24

I mispoke, the wood is WALNUT, not mahogany!
I've had a lot of fun building this kit and learning to play fretless. It sounds wildly different from my steel string banjo (to me at least) and it definitely has a learning curve, but it's a ton of fun to mess around with!

Would that be a good first instrument to learn on?

It definitely depends on what sort of banjo music you'd like to play - the nylon strings would probably not be ideal for really fast bluegrass, and it's harder to make chords (especially for me since I'm still a beginner) but they're great for slower and Old Time style songs. It's also had a bit of a learning curve for me since I'm coming from a steel string banjo so the muscle memory is different, but if you put the practice in, I'm sure you'd get accustomed to it.
He does have a fretted neck option if you think that might work better, too!
