Banjo Practice - Ducks on the Millpond (fretless) 7.28.24
Tuning is gCGCD. Was sick and then was out of town for a bit so that's why I haven't posted a new video in a few weeks, but I am still practicing!
I'm still not always nailing the bit at the 4th and 5th fret consistently on the fretless, but it is slowly getting easier to navigate. My hammer ons are getting a bit better too. The trick seems to be really slamming my fingers down harder on them than I need to on the steel strings.

Banjo practice - Ai Vist Lo Lop 7.7.24
Переглядів 11Місяць тому
Ai Vist Lo Lop is a medieval Occitan (what's now part of France) song. I came across a version of it a few weeks ago as a random youtube recommendation and got a little obsessed with trying to arrange/adapt it to banjo. A lot of this was just plugging the sheet music into Tabledit since it can spit out a tab for you, but I am at least sort of learning to read sheet music and key signatures now!...
Banjo practice - Sally in the Garden 6.30.24

This is Jan Burton's version of Sally in the Garden but played fingerstyle instead of clawhammer. gCGCD tuning. This take wasn't perfect but these are supposed to be progress videos for myself so, this is it, warts and all. I love how spooky this one sounds though, and it's fun to practice. I've been playing this one more on my fretless, but I don't have the hammer-ons quite figured out on that...
Carver Fretless Mountain Banjo Kit (and Mole in the Ground) 6.23.24

I mispoke, the wood is WALNUT, not mahogany! I've had a lot of fun building this kit and learning to play fretless. It sounds wildly different from my steel string banjo (to me at least) and it definitely has a learning curve, but it's a ton of fun to mess around with!
Banjo practice - Mole in the Ground 6.15.24

This is the 2-finger thumb lead arrangement by Mandy at BanjoLemonade. Tuning is double C (gCGCD). Mole in the Ground is a song I first heard when I was a kid and it's stuck with me ever since. It's also an old folk song so it has maybe a dozen different titles and I've never heard two versions with the exact same lyrics, but that's part of what I love about it. I played this through twice and ...

Messed up a couple times but I got tired of doing extra takes. This is in double C (gCGCD) taken from John Burke's Book of Old Time Fiddle Tunes for Banjo (this version credited to Kyle Creed). I really like double C!
Banjo practice - Cripple Creek 5.23.24

About 3 months into learning banjo here (consistently at least - I did about two months of on-my-own learning a while back) never played an instrument outside of two years of middle school clarinet. Standard Cripple Creek from the Earl Scruggs book/tab. Looking forward to seeing how much I improve from this. Also, it's probably sort of quiet/plunky because I don't wear picks.

Would that be a good first instrument to learn on?

@zacharylindahl It could be! It definitely depends on what sort of banjo music you'd like to play - the nylon strings would probably not be ideal for really fast bluegrass, and it's harder to make chords (especially for me since I'm still a beginner) but they're great for slower and Old Time style songs. It's also had a bit of a learning curve for me since I'm coming from a steel string banjo so the muscle memory is different, but if you put the practice in, I'm sure you'd get accustomed to it. He does have a fretted neck option if you think that might work better, too!
